1 Mountain Lion Gazette Region I ~ WA District ~ May 2017 Chapter WA - M Yakima Washington Hello Chapter WA-M Words from our Chapter Director May has arrived, our Fun Run has been completed and the weather looks like, feels like it s time to leave our bikes out for that daily ride. The Fun Run was a success! I want to thank each of you for volunteering and making this event a success!! We had 28 registered riders and 18 bikes. Yes, the numbers are a little low, but the Ride was GREAT and ALL who attended stated they had a good ride! May is National Motorcycle Safety Awareness month. Please, please be caution while out on your bike or in your automobile. Nationwide people who loss their life while riding a motorcycle is due to Inattentiveness. Statics show that when a motorcycle/auto accident happens the #1 statement made is I did NOT see him/her! This pointing to the motorcyclist. Be aware of your surrounds; Watch for the other guy; If you are the bike rider who hits or gets hit by an automobile, you will be the person most injured or deceased. Be SAFE everyone, please! On to the more exciting things to do now that Riding weather is here. The days are longer, the sun is making it s a presence more often and life is good. There are many upcoming events within GWRRA, beginning with Chapter L s Spring Fling, May 27 th May 29 th at the Benton County Fairgrounds. June 10 th is Chapter D s Duck Hunt in Montesano, WA; Chapter Q s Crazy Ride in Lakewood, WA; Chapter R s Blue Mountain Rendezvous has moved to June 23 rd 25 th in Milton Freewater, OR; July 20 th 22 nd is Washington District Rally in Cashmere, WA; August 17 th 19 th is GWRRA Region I Rally in Tillamook, OR; Saturday, August 26 th is Chapter O s Whale of a Picnic in Bremerton, WA. Our mascot, Scooter, is visiting with Chapter O and we as a Chapter really need to go and bring him back home. So Chapter M members please make plans to visit Chapter O s Whale of a Picnic in Bremerton on Saturday, August 26 th! Wing Ding is in Grapevine Texas, August 29 th September 2 nd ; September 15 th - 17 th Chapter P s Oyster Feed! We have our summer socials, please attend when you can, I know many of us are on vacation and/or out of town but for those of you who are here plan on attending, invite or bring a friend or two, the more the merrier. I don t know about you, but I m always looking forward to making new friends. See you for sure at our next Chapter meeting Saturday, June 3 the Branding Iron in Toppenish, meeting is at 9 am. 2 Rider Education May Motorcycle Safety Month May has arrived and we know that means motorcycle safety month, the perfect time to take a safety inventory of your motorcycle, your gear and yourself. The bike! Is your two (or three) wheeled partner ready for the season ahead? Do you have a high mileage adventure planned that may require some extra attention? We all have the T CLOCK Checklist memorized, right? Check your Tires, Controls, Lights, Oil, Chassis, Kickstand, hoses, battery, cables & levers. Ok great, but what about that regular scheduled maintenance on some of the needed items beyond just changing the oil? Air cleaner, brake, and clutch fluid every 12,000 miles. Spark plugs at 16,000 miles. Radiator and drive 24,000 miles. Brake pads? What about the round rubber things between your safety and the asphalt? Are you riding on a well-worn or a patched/plugged tire that should be replaced? If you are planning a trip, better to replace tires now than whatever tire emergency might occur on the road! The gear! What does your gear look like? New? Old? Is it time to replace those worn out, slick bottomed cowboy boots (I am referring to the boots that may have slick bottoms, not the cowboys) with an ankle covering, rubber soled, asphalt grabbing riding boot? Have you, or are you considering adding some HI-VIZ gear? One great place to do a major upgrade for the season is a new helmet. Check out the Bob s this season! They are both sporting new(ish) HI-VIZ green modular helmets. Jean and I recently spent a few dollars on some modular helmets as well. Mine is HI-VIZ white. Another safe gear factor is appropriate gear for whatever weather you may encounter i.e.: rain, heat, cold, etc. The rider (you)! Are you ready for the riding season?? What does your personal inventory/checklist look like? Are you in good health and ready to be on the road in charge of 1000 pounds of motorcycle and maybe even a passenger? Have you committed to being a safe motorcyclist? There are GWRRA sponsored ARC & TRC classroom and road course learning opportunities scheduled in state, May through September. Have you taken advantage of available training? And maybe most importantly, inventory your mental approach to being on the road. What are your personal defensive riding practices? If you don t have a built in mental checklist ready to go every time you swing a leg over the saddle. now is the time to develop one!
