2 Message from our Chapter Director Jeff Greeting Chapter L, Delaware B visited our gathering for April and we were very thankful for the company. Also Terry Gardner and Al General from Chapter J were visiting. With a few of our members doing the 40 to Phoenix, and several others visiting Chapter C it would have been a small gathering if not for all the wonderful visitors. Al General as District Educator was so good with his discussion about concerns of heat and the ride to Wing Ding this year it made for an excellent Rider Education item for the gathering, thank you Al. We tried something different and did Bingo instead of a 50/50. It went well and was a nice change from the 50/50, except one card that came in the Bingo kit, had the number 9 in the I column instead of the B column. A misprinted bingo card, wow. We want to thank Bob Nichols for donating the lighted sign for the Chapter. It is a great eye catcher and a functional piece of art. Everyone will know when Chapter L is in the house now, thank you Bob! Remember our Facebook page groups/ / feel free to add pictures and comments. Several members attended the Chapter J Gathering on April 30 th and the Shiny side up afterwards that we Co-sponsored with Chapter J. It was great riding weather. Al General from Chapter J and I picked the exercises from several sources, and Matt did a lot of the cone moving, thank you Matt. We are looking forward to the MD B-Fun day and motorcycle rodeo, Saturday May 6 th with several members planning to attend. Chapter C has changed their gathering date for May to May 7 th so we can get a visitation to them and they can visit us, thank you Tom Prentice. So this next weekend has two riding events for us. Look for text and or s coordinating meet up locations and times for these events. Come to the gathering, it s just no F_N without U! 2

Message from your ACD/MEC Ken What a great ride out to Phoenix. Again this Year Hilton and I did our own ride to WV then Kentucky and on to the Ozarks in Arkansas.

I did have my rain gear and heated liner and gloves with me so all was good! We stopped at Senaca rocks in WV, then stopped at New River Gorge bridge.

Of coarse our best ride was leaving Morarity NM in the snow. Lucky for us it wasn t sticking to the road. About 30-40 miles of off and on snow.

3 Message from your ACD/MEC Ken What a great ride out to Phoenix. Again this Year Hilton and I did our own ride to WV then Kentucky and on to the Ozarks in Arkansas. We meet the group at Shawnee Honda for a cookout with the local chapters. Since the trip started a couple of weeks earlier than normal we had cooler weather with some rain when we left on Mar 28. I did have my rain gear and heated liner and gloves with me so all was good! We stopped at Senaca rocks in WV, then stopped at New River Gorge bridge. Spent the night in Charleston WV hitting some more rain before we stopped. In Kentucky we stopped at the Ark experience-somewhat expensive but interesting! Of coarse our best ride was leaving Morarity NM in the snow. Lucky for us it wasn t sticking to the road. About miles of off and on snow. Next year the 40 to Phoenix ride is changing its stops-it s not set in stone yet, but they will stop in Ashville NC first then go to Nashville, TN, then on to Conway AK, from there it s the same until they leave Morarity NM then they plan on 2 days to get to Phoenix. This schedule will leave more time for sight seeing and make the trip even more fun!! If you haven t done it yet, it s a great experience to meet new people and see more things! Get the proper gear to keep you, and a co-rider dry. Also everyone else s visibility will be reduced, make sure you are seen better, buy brightly colored raingear.

6 Message from your Rider Educator April Showers Jeff McCarter Assistance Rider Educator April showers may bring May flowers, but nobody wants to be caught riding in the rain. Have your raingear: Riding and being wet and cold is going to really ruin your ride, distract you from being safe, and perhaps set the stage for worse things to happen. Get the proper gear to keep you, and a co-rider dry. Also everyone else s visibility will be reduced, make sure you are seen better, buy brightly colored raingear. Maintain visibility: Several windshield cleaning solutions are out there to bead the rain up and make it shear off easier. I purchased a rubber piece that I put on the edge of my windshield during rain and it channels the rain sideways and down so none runs over the top and down the inside Make sure when you choose your eye protection it is well ventilated to prevent fogging. Traction: While the tires of today are great at maintaining a higher percentage of friction with the roads when wet, some surfaces demand our attention in rain, so ease up on the brakes as you encounter them or reduce the power. The lines on the road, especially stop bars, can be VERY slick. Metal plates, bricks, plastic, all make for slippery surfaces. Remember that things are most slick during the first few minutes of rain, take a break, and let the oils and trash get washed away. Keeping your tires inflated properly, will also increase traction. Slow down, all maneuvers require more traction at higher speeds. Practice: Best way to know you are ready to ride in the rain is to go out in the rain on purpose, find a safe place, and practice. If your gear is going to spring a leak, or your electric system get mad at being wet, best have it happen close to home rather than on a long trip. Find your limits in a safe place, rather than in traffic. I hope you don t get caught in the rain, but if you do I hope you find these tips helpful. Jeff 6
