1 NEWSLETTER APRIL 2016 Welcome to Gold Wing Road Riders Association Oklahoma Chapter B!! Chapter B made a visit to Chapter M s Anniversary Party on March 12th. It was a great party and everyone had a super time. If you were not there, you missed the chapter cheerleading contest with the men putting on a good show. There will be some pics in the photo section of the newsletter. Have a good laugh!! Before you jump on your bike for the spring season, make sure everything is in good working order. If you cannot travel to the district rallies, pick an anniversary party that is close to your chapter. Then GO!!!!! They are a lot of fun and you get to catch up on all the news from the other chapters.

District rallies are a great source for those classes. Again, if you cannot travel that far, ask your chapter Motorist Awareness Coordinator to schedule the class.

2 CHAPTER DIRECTOR OK-B SHAWNEE, OK CAROL HAYNES Hello Everyone, Well rally season is upon us!!!! There are district rallies, anniversary parties, camp outs, parades etc. There is something for everyone. If you cannot travel to the district rallies, pick an anniversary party that is close to your chapter. Then GO!!!!! They are a lot of fun and you get to catch up on all the news from the other chapters. GWRRA is all about making friends for FUN, SAFETY and KNOWLEDGE. Take advantage of all the great opportunities these gatherings present. Do you need a class to stay current? District rallies are a great source for those classes. Again, if you cannot travel that far, ask your chapter Motorist Awareness Coordinator to schedule the class. They would all be happy to help you stay current. As Chapter Director, I will do my best to represent Chapter B at as many of the events that are physically and financially possible. I would love to have you join me. Kay, Smitty, Gina, Johnie, Allison and myself just got back from Marshall, TX. It was for the Region H rally. A little wet and cold but a GREAT TIME. I will be heading out next Wednesday for the Louisiana District Rally. I will be teaching a seminar on making Potato Jewelry. Kay will be staying here and minding the store. 14 RIDER EDUCATION WITH SMITTY SMITH A Message from Your Rider Educator With the weather getting warmer, you still need to watch out for signs that winter conditions are still here: cold temperatures, snow flurries, freezing rain and ice over puddles on the side of the road. All of these things can cause you driving problems if the weather should turn cold and freezing rain comes along. These types of conditions will greatly reduce traction when the road surface becomes icy which is a great reason to stay home and stay safe. But we all know that this type of weather can happen when you least expect during your spring rides. As we have learned from our motorcycle training, when we lose traction, we also lose the ability to control our braking and steering. Traction can be increased, when roads become icy or snow covered, by looking for a surface that has more texture such as the unpaved shoulder of the road. This gravel on the side of the road can provide more resistance to sliding and skidding. You also may find that the crusty snow that is on the shoulder or in the center track (middle of the lane) where snow has not been packed down, provides better traction than trying to drive on ice. Just remember that no matter where you decide to travel, move your bike/trike smoothly onto the other surface. Use slow and steady movements and get off the ice as soon as possible. Remember that no matter what the weather brings the roads can become slick. Oil can come to the surface when it rains or freezing rain can put a glaze of ice over the road. When this happens acceleration, braking and steering must be done in a very smooth fashion. Use a light touch on the throttle to suppress the power to the back tire(s). This will keep you form losing traction or making the back end slide from side to side. Braking must be done in the same way with a light touch to both the hand and foot brake. Apply slow and steady pressure to maintain control of the bike/trike and not cause it to slide. This will help maintain steering control and keep the bike/trike in a straight line.. When the road conditions start to degrade, increase your following distance behind other vehicles. The added space will increase your reaction time, maneuverability and collision avoidance. 22 LET S RIDE Wow! There are so many cool places to visit in Oklahoma on a bike or trike. Spring is coming, the weather is warming and rides are in our future. Let s take a minute or two to visit some cool day and over night riding points in Oklahoma. Maybe you will want to say LET S RIDE and go to a few. These rides are listed as the top five western Oklahoma rides in travel OK. I will only go over a few: ROUTE 66 WEST FROM MIAMI TO ARCADIA TALIMENA NATIONAL SCENIC BYWAY OK-20 THROUGH CLAREMORE AND SPAVINAW OK-10 FROM TAHLEQUAH TO GREENLEAF STATE PARK OK-123 THROUGH BARNSDALL AND BARTLESVILLE. Take a motorcycle trip on Oklahoma Highway 20 through Rogers and Mayes County and travel deep into the heart of northeast Oklahoma s Green Country. Begin this 38 mile trek at the Will Rogers Memorial Museum in Claremore. Explore the life and accomplishments of Will Rogers, one of the most well-known celebrities of the 1920 s and 30s, and view items from his extensive memorabilia collections. The museum plays Will Rogers movies daily and is a great way to learn about Oklahoma s favorite son. Heading east on Highway 20, cross through Pryor and continue over the Lake Hudson Bridge into Salina before turning north toward Spavinaw and hitting some great riding roads. This road is not for the novices and even experienced riders need to slow down for the ominous Dead Man s Curve, a downward sloping hairpin turn.
