Chattin with Char October 2016 Hello Chapter X Friends The much awaited Oklahoma District Rally has come and gone. Thank you Oklahoma District Staff for a very good rally. It was lots of fun and kept us busy with all the planned events. We are sorry that Johnie and Gina will be stepping down as Directors but happy to know they will be around. Thank you Johnie and Gina for a job well done. Chapter X would like to congratulate our Chapter Couple, Bill and Linda Stevens, being named the Oklahoma District Couple of the Year. They will do a fantastic job of representing GWRRA and Oklahoma District. The four days we were together as a chapter were so much fun. We had twenty-nine chapter members attend. Thank you chapter members for all of your participation, working hard and just making everything fun. We were able to bring home lots of certificates to show how hard we worked. Hope you have had an opportunity to see the video of the talent show, not only was it funny, this chapter can actually sing. We did not just have fun at the rally, we had fun at the restaurant when we practiced our talent show entry (thankful the other diners liked it), in the evenings when we played games, when we sat around telling stories and visiting with any and every one. These are the things that make Chapter X awesome. We have several events planned for the month which will keep us busy. In just a couple of weeks, we will be spending another four days together for our Fall Ride. This will be another fun time. Have a great month! Char Sadler Chapter X Director 3

Notes from Assistant Chapter Directors Bill and Linda Stevens October 2016 What a great Oklahoma District Rally! It was designed with having fewer seminars and new, fun activities. From what we saw the goal was accomplished! Oklahoma District Directors, Johnie and Gina Fredman, did a great job of guiding the district team in the right direction. Kaylee and Allison jumped in and helped where ever they were asked to help. A special thank you to the Fredman family! Thank you to Chapter X and all of the other chapters and their members for volunteering to help. YOU made the rally a success! We received lots of compliments regarding the rally. It couldn t be a success without you! Chapter X brought home many awards and at this time we can t begin to name them all. October brings several chapter activities including Braum s at Guthrie, Chapter P Visitation, Recruitment at Rib Crib, Fall Ride to Branson and more! Be sure to Participate, Have Fun and Ride Safe! ****************************************************************** Chapter X Happenings by Steve and Carolyn Cotton Oklahoma Chapter X Assistant Chapter Directors October, 2016 E X ceptional Weather and E X ceptional Participation Did we have an e X ceptional Oklahoma District Rally, or what? The ride to and from Muskogee was great and the weather was perfect. It was a fun time for all and Chapter X members continued their e X ceptional participation (we received many awards to prove it), including our own Chapter X Couple, Bill and Linda Stevens, being named the Oklahoma District Couple of the Year! We were pleased to have the opportunity to serve as emcees for both the Couple of the Year Selection and the Dress Competition, as well as presenting two seminars. The 2016 Oklahoma GWRRA District Rally allowed us all time to show our chapter pride, spend time with friends, build new friendships and add to the memories! Fall is in the air and we are looking forward to the upcoming chapter fall ride to Branson later this month. We hope you are all planning to join us. Remember, it is YOU the members that keep Chapter X an e X ceptional chapter! Ride Safe, and Keep Smiling! Steve and Carolyn 4

MEMBERSHIP ENHANCEMENT COORDINATORS Robert & Linda Oberholzer October 2016 MEMBERSHIP BENEFITS Last month we began telling you about some of the benefits of being a member of GWRRA. Here are a few more. The GOLD BOOK! This is the book that comes with your yearly subscription. You re never alone when you are traveling when you have this with you. Participating members are listed by state to assist you with lodging, tools, directions, or just fellowship. It s nice to know that you have help, if needed, when you are in a unfamiliar place. Chapter X used the Gold Book when in Nova Scotia and got a tour guide for a day. We called for recommended sights to see and Dave Gilmore graciously made us love Nova Scotia, seeing sights we wouldn t have otherwise seen. Thank you, Dave! (He still receives our newsletter). RIDER EDUCATION Working hand-in-glove with such eminent organizations as the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) and the national association of State Motorcycle Administrators (SMSA), GWRRA Educators conduct informative and entertaining riding and classroom sessions to improve riding skills and safety! Thank you, Steve Cotton, for keeping Chapter X as safe as you possible can. CHAPTER LIFE This is probably one of the most important benefits GWRRA has to offer. When you decide to participate in a group ride, a gathering, or any of the numerous activities available, you are meeting people that have the same interest as you, riding a motorcycle. But what happens is you are making friends, having FUN and that is what is keeps you going back for more. More next month! Robert & Linda Chapter X Website, Check us out! We also have a Facebook page the Chapter enjoys. Please send me any news, articles and/or photos you would like to have in the newsletter! 7 Rider Education Oklahoma Chapter X Stillwater, OK Steve and Carolyn Cotton October 2016 Tire Pressures! Check your tire s air pressure at least once a week and before long trips. Be sure to use an accurate pressure gauge. Incorrect inflation can lead to uneven wear, and having too much pressure can be just as dangerous as too little. Check air pressure when the tires are cold. Tires are cold when a motorcycle has been ridden less than a mile at moderate speed or after it has been sitting for three or more hours a good time to do this is the first thing in the morning. Never release air from a hot tire in order to reach the recommended cold tire pressure. Normal riding causes tires to run hotter and inflation pressure to increase. If you release air when your tires are hot, you may underinflate your tires to dangerous levels. Now that it is the fall season, cooler temperatures will lower the tire pressure. A good estimate to use when comparing tire pressure to air temperature is for every 10 degrees F change, tire pressure will adjust by 1 psi. For example, if the air temperature increases 10 degrees, your tire pressure will increase 1 psi. Riding on underinflated motorcycle tires is dangerous for several reasons. The tires will build excessive heat and can cause sudden tire failure. Under inflation causes irregular tread wear at the edge of the contact patch and may also damage the tire beyond use. It will affect cornering, cause you to lose gas mileage, cause fatigue cracking, and handle much worse. Riding on tires with too much air is equally as dangerous. The tires are more likely to be cut, punctured, or broken by sudden impact. Overinflating will cause the bike to ride hard and will cause the tire to wear out quickly in the center of the contact patch. Do not exceed the pressure indicated on the tire sidewall. Consult your owner's manual for the recommended inflation. One thing that gets overlooked by some riders is the DOT manufacture date. The date of manufacture is the last four digits of the DOT code. The first two digits are the week of manufacture, and the last two digits are the year. For example, if the last four digits of the DOT code are 0213, that means that the tire was manufactured during the second week of the year Tires as they get older lose their grip and start to crack or dry rot. It s important to take the time to inspect the sidewalls and tread areas for cracks, along with looking for any wearing of the tire or rim damage. And don t forget while you are looking - see if you have picked up any nails or screws in the tread. Mileage on a tire is not the only reason to consider having it replaced. If your tire is four or five years old, and there are visible signs of cracking and wear, you should consider replacing that tire. Loading is another area to consider before going on a ride. Tires are rated for safety reasons and should be used as a guide for safe riding. Overloading is hard on the tires and will cause them to wear prematurely. Consider this - your tires are the foundation, and when your foundation is lost your structure will fail - don t let this happen to you at highway speeds. The end results are not in your favor. Please ride safe and be watchful of other drivers - in most cases they will not see you. Aggressively Ride Safe! Steve and Carolyn Cotton Chapter X Rider Educators 7

MOTORIST AWARENESS Robert Fritsche Chapter MA Coordinator October 2016 Wing Ding 2016 The trip to Wing Ding in Billings Montana was a great adventure. There were new rides every day and the scenery was fantastic. The ride home was also educational for me. I learned that when riding in the rain for long distances you need to keep your windshield clean and waxed so the water will bead and run off freely. Of course, with hail, if you are wearing all your proper riding gear you are pretty well protected as long as it doesn t get any bigger than quarter or half dollar size. If you are on a two wheeler with cross winds, you can float back and forth unless it gets too radical. But when you hook a trailer to that two wheeler it is a whole other ballgame. Your freedom to float has been greatly reduced and at times your trailer tugs on you also. With all that being said, what I found to be important to me was to stay calm and not tense up. Loosen up on the controls, stay focused, and ride the bike, don t let it ride you. I think that Rider Education classes and Parking Lot Practice events are very useful tools to solidify that bond between you and your machine. Enjoy the Ride and Be Safe. Fritz 8

By the Book By: Jack Wagner Deputy Director Region H Trainer By the Book articles are intended to help familiarize GWRRA Volunteer Leaders and Members with the policies, procedures, and information contained in the GWR- RA Officer s Handbook (OHB). A copy of the Officer s Handbook can be found at the following Internet website: Please feel free to reprint these articles in Region, District, or Chapter newsletters. Statement of Purpose or Why Are We Here? Every organization or business should have a mission statement as well as a statement of purpose. While being similar, they are different. A mission statement should answer the question 'what do we do and who do we do it for?'. The statement of purpose answers the question 'why do we do what we do?'. The statement of purpose contained in the Officer Handbook includes pieces of the mission and sums it up very succinctly to answer the questions of 'what do we do and for whom' as well as 'why we do it'. GWRRA is an informal educational, social organization of proud, unique and special people Gold Wing Owners. It was formed for people to exchange ideas, share safety information relating to motorcycling and motorcyclists, educate the non-motorcycling public concerning motorcycling problems and participate in impromptu rides. In addition, it supports the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) and assists all motorcyclists in achieving and/or improving public acceptance of motorcyclists. GWRRA is a family-oriented organization, without political or religious affiliations or influence and supports civic, local, police, charity, and government organizations. GWRRA publishes and distributes Wing World and other media that will inform, educate, entertain and enlighten our Members and Officers. Hard to believe that everything we do can be distilled into one paragraph from the Officer Handbook. Putting that paragraph into actions is where all of the FUN happens. The more you know, the better it gets! Jack Wagner GWRRA Deputy Director Region H Trainer 9

Couple Connection Bill and Linda Stevens Ok-X Couple of the Year October 2016 Thank you Oklahoma X members. You are great! We appreciate all the support shown to us as we went through the Oklahoma District Couple of the Year selection process this past weekend. We couldn t have done it without you! It is our honor to represent both Chapter X and the Oklahoma District as Couple of the Year. We had the opportunity to meet some people, who were strangers to us initially. They are terrific people and over the weekend became good friends. We consider them as a part of our GWRRA family now. We can t wait for the opportunity to go visit them! If you are ever honored by being asked to be Chapter Couple of the Year, you should accept! Thank you again Chapter X for your support! Save those pull tabs for The Ronald McDonald House 12

Theme Dress Competition Outlaw Trail Ride On Bike Competitions As you can see, we tried to do EVERYTHING District had to offer and this year there was plenty to do. In addition, we worked tables at Registration, MEC, sold tickets, put on the Plinko, Farkel and Bingo games, taught seminars, emceed competitions, and still found time to participate in poker walks, seminars, and the medallion hunt, in addition to shopping! Everyone knows that Chapter X likes to compete and participate in everything. But do they know our secret? If you don t enter you can t win! We strive to be the best. Sometimes we aren t but we have the MOST FUN trying and that is the important thing having 10 times the FUN! 14

CURTIS & TAMMY BURNS Back around 1985 while investigating an injury accident involving a Honda Goldwing in which the bike wasn t hurt, but the rider was, Curtis was asked to ride the bike to the owners home and park it. That was the first taste of the Honda Goldwing, a short ½ mile ride on a 1982 GL1100. Flash forward to 1996 when Curtis was umpiring a lot of fast pitch softball all over NE Oklahoma and needed transportation. Somehow Ms. Tammy was talked into letting Curtis get a 1983 GL1100. Soon after Curtis and Tammy joined the months old Chapter X in Cushing, OK and thus the journeys began. Several years of riding the GL1100 and an updated bike was needed, and a 1988 GL1500 was found in Stillwater and a third rider was added, Cookie. Now began a few out of state trips for rallies and weekend get a ways. Still, umpiring took up much of the weekends so Chapter visits were just about all of the GWRRA that we could get in, beside the District rally each year. During this time, Curtis became the Rider Ed for Chapter X for a few years. Tammy was offered a ride on a GL1800 one day, later that year a white 2004 GL1800 ABS was found in Victoria, TX. An airplane ride to Houston, a bus ride to Victoria, and then a long ride home on the newly purchased bike started the longer trips for Curtis and Tammy. Two years of weekend trips for Oklahoma photo tours, then a weeklong trip to New Mexico, then the big plunge. We travelled to Wing Ding in Knoxville, then toured all of the way to Niagara Falls, NY. Smaller trips the next two years before riding with Chapter X to Madison and all of the way to Nova Scotia and home. We now still have the 2004 GL1800 with Cookie firmly riding on the rack waving at the other motorist, but we have an Escapade trailer and a Bunkhouse camper. Looking forward to many more exploring trips with the quest of getting 49 states and a few more provinces as we Wing around. Curtis is in his 35th year as a Police Officer, now serving with Oklahoma State University Department of Public Safety for 14 years. Tammy has also been with Oklahoma State University for nearly 14 years having worked for University Dining as a Café and C Store supervisor. She now is a Senior Financial Assistance with UDS in the Student Union Director s office. Curtis and Tammy are the proud parents of Curtisy, Courtney and Ty, all three of who have made many trips on the back of one of the Wings. We also get to spoil 6 wonderful grandkids ranging in age from 14 to 1 year. Watch for us and wave at Cookie!!!! (Cookie Monster is their bright blue mascot.) 16

Riding with REX I went home with Fritz in September. Hey, how come nobody warned me about him!!!?? Just kidding. He was great and we had a good time. I enjoyed his family. His 3 year old grandson, Harrison, took me 4-wheeling in his monster truck. Fritz warned me to be very quiet and not roar around the cat, Angel, and the baby, Odessa. I was very quiet and behaved myself. Angel decided I was no threat and Odessa slept right through my visit. In Muskogee, I made up for it. I really got to let loose and ROAR when we went to the Oklahoma District Rally. When we arrived Chapter X started setting up my pride table with all the chapter s accomplishments through the year. All the chapter tables looked so good, but I think ours was the best. I guess the judges thought so too, because we won first. And I won the best mascot too! That evening the Muskogee Chamber of Commerce hosted an event with live music to entertain us. We all enjoyed it and had a good time. On Friday we went for rides through beautiful green country of eastern Oklahoma. Friday afternoon was the COY selection and my friends, Bill and Linda Stevens, in our chapter won the award! That night we went on a parade to show off the lights on the bikes and trikes through Muskogee. Saturday evening after the festivities were over, we sat in the hotel lobby and Chapter X played Twisted Farkel. There was a lot of fun and laughter, as usual. Fritz and I went on to Branson to see more of Fritz s family and celebrate his sister s 80th birthday. It has been a really fun month. 17
