2 FROM THE FRONT SEAT We have really had some great weather this year. I hope you have been able to ride some. We had our ride to bobby's in Illinois just a beautiful evening ride with friends and a lot of back roads. Believe me I am not familiar with the roads out there and I was lost. Thank God for people talented enough to create people to invent modern conveniences like GPS otherwise I would have had to get out the old way and use a MAP. July 19th is our ride to southern Ill. I wasn't able to make it but Bob said it was a really great ride. With 13 bikes and 6 trikes and great weather what more could you ask for. Aug 2nd was Chapter I fun run and we had 4 bikes and 3 trikes go down to Jackson Mo. for a fun time. Chapter I always give you a good time. Come to the meeting and find out what you missed if you weren't there. Some of the things we have coming soon are region rally on August 7-9. Best of luck to Lester and Sara Gibson for Couple of the Year and Tom Braun for Individual of the Year. Even if we don't make it we are wishing you all the best in the selection process. Your all winners in our hearts. Aug 17th is Ride for Kids at St. Charles Community College. Register online and you'll be registered for a chance to win a motorcycle. Aug 23rd is the district picnic. 6 Helmets States Law, History, and How They Are Made As we are in the middle of the riding season, many of us and our friends are traveling outside our state lines and may or may not know what the helmet laws are for each state. Personally, for me, it does not matter as I always ride with my helmet on. However, I did find it interesting that those that do not have a helmet law do require eyewear protection, unless you have a windscreen on your motorcycle. Another interesting item to bring up is that there are states with restrictions for most under the age of 21 so, if your co-rider/passenger is under this age, they are required to have a helmet on when riding. Here is a link that gives you a good breakdown by state: touringtips/ss/road-rules-helmet-and-touring-laws-by-state.htm and another with pretty graphics: Speaking about helmets we all should know how important helmets are as well as can and do save lives; however, did you know when helmets were invented and why? The first gas-engine motorcycle was invented in 1885 by German inventor Gottlieb Dailmer. It had four gears and had a top speed of 10mph so; obviously, it was not made for going fast. However, as time progressed between 1931 and 1953 other manufacturers started producing motorcycles with much faster speeds, which started the increase of motorcycle accidents, head injuries, and fatalities. By 1953, University of Southern California professor C.F. Red Lombard created and applied for patent a helmet designed to absorb the shock of impact over the bigger area of the helmet. From that point on additional manufacturers have continued forward in making safer helmets using Professor Lombard s patented design. The materials used then were primitive compared to today s technically advanced products, still, the concept has not changed all that much. Today s helmets contain four parts, they are: the shell, the absorption lining, the comfort padding and the retention system. When it comes to the shell, it is there to protect against any object penetrating the helmet and with future technology there are now three types of shell materials being used. They are thermal plastic, fiberglass and carbon Kevlar. All three are good shells and will protect your head/skull, yet, each material is

7 lighter and stronger than the previous model. The next item to fill the helmet is the absorption liner and although it is similar to the old style Styrofoam coolers, they too with new technology now use EPS or expanded polystyrene. A product that comes in tiny little pellets that when heated expand and stick together giving the helmet the protection needed as well as keeping the helmet light in weight. We proceed to the next portion of the helmet, which is the comfort padding that is added and made of compact foam wrapped in a soft cloth material to protect the user from any scraping of the face, ears and head. Lastly, we have the retention system that keeps the helmet on the head/skull to protect you in case of a fall. Most manufacturers use a D ring style to keep the straps connected when wearing while others use a clip-on style version. Most of the retention systems materials are soft nylon that is interwoven preventing any chafing on the cheeks and neck. Makes-Motorcycle-Helmets.aspx Lastly, we all know that there are three different safety classifications or regulations that manufacturer s must meet in order sell their product. For the United States, there is the Department of Transportation (DOT) as well as SNELL Memorial Foundation. While the European countries use U.N. Economic Commission for Europe or better known as ECE. Each has their standards in order to have their label appear on these helmets. Well, while doing research, I found a web site that gives you the opportunity to research helmets and their ratings based on their own testing of helmets. I would say they are equivalent to SNELL but are for the European riders. I found the information interesting as they also give details to how they test the helmets as well as why. They also have an animated video dedicated to how a helmet should fit on one s head, including how to wear, how to size your head to find the correct size, and tests with the helmet on to confirm fit.
