2 SKILLS AND ENRICHMENT SERVICES AT HENDERSONS Hendersons offers both Group Workshops and Individual Tuition with the aim of raising students skills in both English and Maths. These are not focused on preparing for exams. GROUP WORKSHOPS are conducted on weeknights, weekends and during school holidays with a maximum of eight students. The families who enrol students in these improvement courses have three aims: To raise the skills of their child To give the child some extension experience To cover what has not been thoroughly learned and practised at school before attempting the scholarship preparation workshops INDIVIDUAL TUTORING IN MATHS AND ENGLISH We provide additional tutoring at our Hawthorn and Mount Waverley offices on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays after school hours. As these tutors also do general tutoring, they are usually fairly heavily booked so appointment times need to be made early. Individual Tuition: $90 per hour All payments must be made prior to first session One hour sessions after school are available subject to appointments already made These workshops and individual tuition are not suitable for students with learning difficulties. ESSAY CORRECTION SERVICE We will set the topics for your child to complete at home. Under your supervision, they can reinforce their current learning. Your child will be provided with addressed envelopes to the corrector. We guarantee that the essay will be in the mail within 48 hours of receipt. You have the option of three essays $90 or six essays $180. This service is only available to students who have undertaken one of our writing workshops. PREPARATION FOR EXAMS If you are interested in preparation for exams, we offer preparation for: Scholarships to private schools Entry tests to private and independent schools Entry tests to classes for very bright students in government, private and independent schools Entry tests to Selective Entry High Schools Please refer to the current workshop date book relevant for the year in which your child will sit their exam.

3 ENGLISH SKILLS IMPROVEMENT COURSES Our programmes are called Snapshots for Years 3 & 4-6 Sessions improving creative writing Snapshots for Years 5 & 6-6 Sessions improving creative writing Writing Beyond Primary School (Years 7 & 8) - 4 sessions creative, 1 on informative and 1 on persuasive You Pull the Strings (Years 7 & 8) - 6 sessions improving creative writing (WBPS is a prerequisite for YPTS) Each session covers some: Writing skills. Reading comprehension. Vocabulary enrichment and word usage. Grammar, punctuation and parts of speech. An overall theme for each session which will enhance general knowledge. A total of eleven essays will be individually corrected over the sessions. A written report after the last session will focus on what progress has been made. Reading and writing should be done in a context to have meaning, so we have created themes for each of the courses. This allows students attending more than one course to ensure the same standard is met without repetition of the material presented. Courses may be taken individually, but a sequence of courses will provide ongoing tuition for those who wish to pursue English development, over a period of time. We have had many students enrol in more than one of the courses at the same year level and have made great progress this way. How These English Skills Improvement Courses Are Different From Our Scholarship Writing Courses. In the English Skills Improvement Courses, we are aiming to improve the general writing and reading skills of the students so that they may use these skills in their everyday school work. In the Scholarship Writing Courses, we are teaching the skills needed to become proficient in interpreting an unseen topic and writing a piece which suits the predetermined criteria of the examining body. MATERIALS: We do not supply or sell our materials under any circumstances. Students who are absent from a session will not receive the material. 2

11 MATHS SKILLS IMPROVEMENT COURSES Four Sessions INTRODUCTION TO PROBLEM SOLVING FOR YR 3, YR 5 & YR 7 The mystery of the written problem is examined and techniques are taught and practised. Students must have maths skills at a level appropriate for their year level to gain from these workshops. If you are not sure of your child s standard of Mathematics, please consider taking one of our individual assessments. Details and dates are listed in the Information Booklet, on our website or you may call our office on for more information. All skills in each course are introduced in small incremental steps. This step by step approach is enhanced by clear explanations from the teacher. In this way many operations or concepts that have seemed mysterious in the past become clearer to the student. We have courses of four sessions of two and a quarter hours each. Our groups have a maximum, as always, of eight students.
