1 April 2015 District Governor Keith s Report Achieving Starts with Believing As mentioned in the last InforMer, with our Convention having been held and the club visiting finished (with perhaps one exception), I have had a chance to catch up with other activities and even attend a meeting of my own club. Despite my absence the club has survived! Monthly Newsletter of Lions International District 202M It is contemplating holding a Club Refresh which is a programme that I recommend as a proven way to increase membership. The New Zealand website contains all the information you need to know on how to run this programme. I have seen the programme produce excellent results but it does need the whole club to back it as one of the most important aspects of gaining new members is how the existing members introduce and welcome the newer ones. Are they welcomed as equals or treated as if they know nothing until they have been members for some years? Take a look at Clubs/Growing-Membership-Papers April is the month for the formation of the incoming boards within each club and again I would ask that if requested you look upon the holding an office position within your club as something you can do for your fellow members. There is training being offered for each position which will help you to get a fuller understanding of what your positon requires. As well, there are usually other members that have done the job before and are only too willing to offer assistance. I was always told that the day you start a business is the day you start planning to sell it and the same applies to officeholder positions. Who is going to follow you or are you going to get to the end of your term and then leave it up to the incoming president, district governor etc. to find your replacement? Succession planning is what it is about, a most vital process. I do appreciate that some members are only too willing to continue in office, sometimes for a number of years, and this means that the club has a strong, experienced core of officers. As well some clubs do not have the resources within their membership to allow for rotation of positions. Finally, my thanks to those clubs that have made donations to the LCIF appeal for funds for Vanuatu. The level of devastation is hard to get to grips with. LCIF have already donated $USD110,000 to the local Lions Club to assist with immediate needs. Of course, there was also damage sustained by parts of our own district but thankfully on a reduced scale when compared to Cyclone Bola, 25 years ago. Keith Kenderdine District Governor 202M

3 Category 5 cyclone Pam swept over the island nation of Vanuatu on March 14, The cyclone s fierce winds downed many trees, stripped vegetation, damaged or destroyed houses, and coated leaves in damaging salt spray, leaving the residents homeless, without food and water, and stripped of their source of livelihood. The storm killed eleven people and seriously injured many more, according to media reports. The cyclone has left immense devastation and thousands of people need shelter, food and water, with the humanitarian situation only worsening. LCIF sent an emergency grant of $US10,000 immediately following the cyclone and has since awarded a US$100,000 Major Catastrophe Grant to help with relief efforts in Vanuatu. It s estimated 90% of all structures in Efate, the most populous island in Vanuatu, are either damaged or destroyed and food crops have been heavily hit. Two of the hardest hit islands were Tanna and Erromango, with 80% of the homes of Tanna were either damaged or destroyed. Thousands of people across the island nation are now homeless and living in evacuation centres. Please consider making a donation to LCIF, tagged for Disaster Relief to assist the people of Vanuatu. If you have any questions about making a donation, applying for a grant, awarding someone with a Melvin Jones Fellowship award or any question about the Foundation, then please contact me. My details are in the directory, however is probably easiest and my address is 202m.lcif@lionsclubs.org.nz I look forward to hearing from you soon. PCC Jo Cameron 202M LCIF coordinator
4 LEADERSHIP LINES APRIL 2015 COMING UP FAST 1. Club elections yes it is that time again! Time to seek nominations for all club officers, usually at the meeting nearest the 15 th March, and then this gives the required 2 weeks, at least, to advise members when an election/confirmation of officers will be held. This should be completed by April 15 th 2. Club Officer Report (PU-101): Each year following the election of the club officers, clubs are required to report their new officers to International Headquarters by May 15 (however we ask clubs to action as soon as the election of Officers is finalised). Remember to include current unique addresses to facilitate establishing club officer passwords. Once the new officers are reported, those officers will begin to receive correspondence and have appropriate access to MyLCI and other resources. For the same reason, clubs should also report any officer changes that occur during the year. LCI association Web site at When: Saturday 18 th April from 9:30am 2pm Where: Room 1, Johnsonville Community Centre Lunch will be provided. How to present; do s and don t s of power points, preparation of materials, where to start and finish! Please confirm your attendance and any questions with Rosemary Cook 202m.glt@lionsclubs.org.nz by 1 st April (Preferred action) Or after 1 st April to ladeverill@gmail.com CLUB OFFICERS FORUM Goal: To enhance the awareness of responsibilities as a leader at Club Level The workshop is designed to involve current, past and future leaders in an interactive session. You will be provided with the tools necessary to manage a club while providing quality service to your local community, all while having fun with Lions activities! Incoming Club Officers are strongly encouraged to attend one of these trainings. Other club officers are welcome to attend. Register your interest with your Zone Chairman.
