Olympic Awards 1981 THE OLYMPIC CUP For 1981 the Olympic Cup has been awarded jointly to the Swiss Confederation and to the International Olympic Academy. THE OLYMPIC ORDER The 84th Session of the International Olympic Committee, meeting in Baden-Baden on 1st October 1981 has awarded the Olympic Order to : Gold Medal The Marquess of Exeter. Honorary Vice President. His Holiness Pope John Paul II. HM Olaf, King of Norway. Amadou Mathar M Bow, Director General of UNESCO. Silver medal Nationales Olympisches Komitee für Deutschland A former participant in the Olympic Games (athletics, 1932), Dr. Max Danz has led the delegation of the German NOC at all the Olympic Games for the last 20 years. He was a founding member, vice-president then honorary member of the NOC, president of the National Athletics Federation from 1949 to 1970 and for many years a member of the IAAF. of which he is now honorary vicepresident. A founding member of the German NOC of which he was its vice-president for 17 years, Dr. Herbert Kunze acted as esteemed Secretary General during the Games of the XXth Olympiad in Munich. He was vice-president from 1963 to 1970 of the French Olympic Committee. By crossing the Atlantic in a rowing boat, Gerard d Aboville became an example of courage to many young people. By this achievement, he has developed to the maximum the fundamental qualities of an athlete : strength and perseverance. The concept of the Olympic movement has figured throughout the life of Jacques Goddet He has devoted himself to sports journalism seeking to, and succeeding in, rendering sport popular. He has also taken part in the Irish Amateur Rowing Association. The Olympic Committee of Iceland Architect Gisli Halldorsson, President of the Olympic Committee of Iceland since 1974, is a former national football champion. He was President of the sports federation of Reyjavik ( ) when he was elected President of the Icelandic sports federation, a position he still holds today. Comitato Olimpico Nazionale Italiano Since 1913 Adrian Rodoni has promoted sports cycling. National technical commissioner for amateur cyclists from 1940 to 1955, President of the FIAC since its creation in he remained so until Vice-president of the CONI from 1950 to 1956 and from 1957 to 1973, he has remained President of the ICU since The Japanese Olympic Committee An Olympic champion of swimming in 1936, in the 200 m breast stroke, after having received the silver medal at the 1932 Games, Hideko Hyodo, has successfully dedicated herself to the teaching of sport. Her vitality, and her devotion to the Olympic ideal have made her a genuine idol of the young generation. Kenya Olympic Association Great sportsman and adherent to the Olympic ideal, David Coward, Registrar General in Kenya, has done his utmost to show his faithfulness towards the Olympic movement by proposing that the World Intellectual Property Organisation meet in Nairobi. Chairing this organisation, he ensured the adoption on 26th September 1981 of the international convention which will henceforth protect the Olympic symbol. 638
4 Netherlands Olympic Committee A man of courage and loyalty, Adriaan Paulen has been recognised as such not only when his country was in danger but throughout his life. A former President of the International Amateur Athletic Federation, he took part in three Olympic Games. Whether within the Netherlands Olympic Committee, the Royal Netherlands Athletic Union, or the IAAF, Adrian Paulen has always been a spokesman for the Olympic ideal. Comité Olympique Sénégalais Henri Joseph Dieme has been Honorary President of the Senegalese Olympic Committee since 1977, having been a member since its foundation and President since He contributed notably to the development of athletics, cycling and football in Senegal. He was President of the National Federation of the latter sport from 1964 to The Swedish Olympic Committee Bo Ekelund, honorary member of the IOC, has dedicated fifty years of his life to sport. He practised several with equal success, but it was in the high jump that he won a bronze medal at the Antwerp Games in He was President of the Swedish Amateur Athletic Association, and Vice-President of the National Olympic Committee for 36 years, before becoming a life member. He was also secretary-treasurer of the IAAF ( ) and member of the IOC ( ). Comité Olympique Suisse A great amateur sportsman and sincere admirer of Pierre de Coubertin, Jean-Pascal Delamuraz, former mayor of the town of Lausanne, and presently National Councillor for the Canton of Vaud, has supported the Olympic movement throughout his career. Olympic Committee of the USSR At the Olympic Games in Moscow, all the representatives of the broadcasters were able to appreciate the competence and devotion of Henrikas Yushkevitsus, Secretary General of the USSR Television company. He was a former member of the IOC Television Commission and devotes his spare time not only to sport but to the spreading of the Olympic movement. Several times world gymnastics champion, gymnast lrena Mukhina has had the painful experience of having to apply an athlete s stoicism in her life. Whilst preparing, full of hope and enthusiasm, for the Olympic Games in Moscow, she was badly injured in training. Partly paralysed, she is continuing her struggle with courage, fighting any temptation to give in. Bronze Oestereichisches Olympisches Komitee A most popular sportsman, Gregor Hradetsky received two gold medals in the canoeing events in Berlin, An excellent musician, he is also well-known as being one of the most famous makers of organs in all of Austria. Comite Olimpico de Chile Entitled the greatest horseman of the world, Eduardo Yanez Zavala, dedicated his life to equestrian sports. A teacher of equestrian sport at the School for Cavalry Officers, he was also an instructor at the equestrian dressage institute in Vienna. Director and member of the Chilean team, he won many prizes in the most well-known international competitions. British Olympic Association Dr. J. Raymond Owen has given his talents as a doctor to the service of sport throughout his life. He was an oarsman and trainer of the rowing club of Cambridge University during his studies, and became the Honorary Medical Adviser of the Amateur Rowing Association and then the British Olympic Association. He is the respected President of the International Association of Olympic Medical Officers (IAOMO). Hungarian Olympic Committee An Olympic champion in freestyle wrestling at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. after having been second in 1932, Karoly Karpati has dedicated his life to the sports education of young people. He took an active part in the promotion of the sport of wrestling, and has produced several Olympic champions. Olympic Council of Ireland An energetic defender of the independence of Olympic sport, Kenneth Ryan has been Secretary-General of the OCI since Irish sailing champion, he presides over the Finn committee of the IYRU after having been team manager of the Irish Olympic yachting delegation in
5 Polish Olympic Committee The Olympic record of athlete lrena Szewinska is a most impressive one. She has taken part in 4 Olympic Games and won three gold medals, two silver, and three bronze. With her characteristic vitality and energy, she has been working towards Olympism for a year at the Polish National Olympic Committee. Portuguese Olympic Committee There are some men who personify a sport, and one such man is Alves Callado. A participant in five Olympic Games, his successes in the national and international championships amount to thousands. He was eleven times the best horseman at the Coupe des Nations. Swiss Olympic Committee At the age of 15 Max Bangerter made his debut in gymnastics. Later, he devoted his efforts to the organisation of this discipline, giving rise to its constant growth. For fifty years, he dedicated himself to the promotion of the Olympic ideal, by taking over as Secretary of several gymnasts associations, and since 1960 he has been Secretary General of the FIG. Comité Olympique Tunisien A dedicated and efficient Secretary General of the Tunisian Olympic Committee for 15 years, Slaheddine Baly, presently Minister of National Defence in Tunisia, has found time to work simultaneously with several national federations. Among other things, he founded and presides over the African Archery Confederation. Olympic Committee of the USSR To be Olympic champion in figure skating for three Olympiads is an achievement which lrina Rodnina accomplished with ease. Her popularity has greatly contributed to the development of the interest of young people in Olympism.
