5 2. FISA 2.1. What is FISA? FISA, Fédération Internationale des Sociétés d Aviron in French, or the English equivalent International Federation of Rowing Associations, is the governing body of the sport of rowing. It is empowered by its 137 member National Rowing Federations, the National Olympic Committees and the International Olympic Committee to govern the sport of rowing. FISA sets the rules and regulations for the practice of the sport in all its forms (elite, para-rowing, masters, recreational, coastal and indoor), and organises sanctioned World Rowing events. It also provides advice and expertise for the organisation of rowing regattas, on coaching education and other matters relating to the sport and its development. FISA was founded by representatives from Belgium, France, Italy, Switzerland and Adriatica (now a part of Italy) in Turin on 25 June It is the oldest international sports federation in the Olympic movement. FISA established its first headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland in 1922 and, after moving away, it returned to its roots in February FISA s Goals and Objectives The goals and objectives of FISA are to efficiently develop, promote, present and govern the sport of rowing. FISA s Vision To encourage the development of the sport of rowing and strengthen the bonds that unite those who practice it. FISA s Mission To make rowing a universally practiced and globally relevant sport. To spread the sport in all its forms. CORE VALUES Core Values of the Sport of Rowing Team Work: Rowers pull together towards a common goal Educational: Rowers learn self-discipline and motivation together with commitment and a spirit of fair play. Focus: Rowers require total concentration on the ultimate objective in order to harness power and precision in this demanding endurance sport. Tradition: Rowers transmit time-honoured values and shared experiences to future generations. Environmental: Rowers respect and safeguard the water and its surroundings. Core Values of FISA Oldest: FISA was the first International Federation in the Olympic Movement created in June 1892 and has been on the Olympic Games programme since the beginning in Global: FISA has member federations in all five continents. Influential: FISA has key representatives in leadership positions in many international sports organisations and governing bodies. Ethical: FISA is a leader in the fight against doping in sport and was the first International Federation to conduct out-of-competition doping controls. ENVIRONMENT FISA s Environmental Policy The environment is an integral part of rowing s core values and shapes FISA s strategy in all areas of its activities. FISA is committed to practices that respect and safeguard the environment in which the sport of rowing is conducted. FISA endorses responsible and sustainable environmental practices in the planning and staging of events, the design and construction of new rowing facilities and the refurbishment of existing rowing facilities. FISA promotes awareness and community consultation on rowing-related environmental issues. FISA s Environmental Policy is based on seven principles. These cover: 1. Habitat protection 2. Resource conservation 4 Media Guide Copyright 2013 FISA & Infostrada Sports, all rights reserved >

6 2. FISA 2.2. FISA on-site contacts 3. Waste and pollution reduction 4. Heritage and indigenous culture recognition 5. Healthy conditions for all associated with rowing 6. Environmental awareness and education 7. Consultation with wider community FISA is actively developing new strategies to fully engage itself in the promotion of clean water and the protection of the environment. Clean Water Initiative World Rowing and WWF International (World Wide Fund for Nature) have entered a strategic alliance in 2011, with the aim to help promote environmentallysustainable practices at our events and in day-today rowing activities. We aim to raise awareness of the need to manage and use clean, fresh water in a sustainable manner. Rowing is a clean water sport, and so rowers have a number of very good reasons to be part of the Clean water movement. Rowers have been playing an ever larger role in improving water quality in their rowing environment, whether it be a lake, river or coastline. 7 3. ROWIng 3.1. About Rowing The origin of rowing The boat was one of mankind s most significant mode of transport for centuries. The first representation of a rowing boat was discovered in Finland and dates back to 5,800 BC. The earliest regatta was held on 16 September 1274 in Venice, Italy, where regattas developed as challenges between gondoliers and boatmen in a variety of rowing boats. Rowing has evolved all over the world wherever people and water mix. However, the origin of the sport of rowing as we know it today comes from England, where the worldrenowned Oxford versus Cambridge University Boat Race was first held in 1829 on the River Thames. Boat Classes Rowing events are either sculling or sweep events. In sculling (denoted by an x ), each rower has two oars whereas in sweep rowing (denoted by a - for boats without coxswains and + for coxed boats) each person in the boat has one oar. Rowing at the World Rowing Championships The first World Rowing Championships were staged in Lucerne, Switzerland, in Initially held every four years, the championships soon became an annual event, with the exception of Olympic years. This is the biggest annual World Rowing event, often with around 1,000 athletes and 60 nations entered. Female boat classes were included on the World Championship programme in 1974, with lightweight categories for both men and women featuring annually from pionships, while in Olympic years only international boat classes take part. Para-rowing (formerly called adaptive rowing) was integrated into the World Rowing Championships programme for the first time in 2002 and has attracted an increasing number of participants ever since. It is the second time that the World Rowing Championships have been held in Asia in 2005 they were hosted in Gifu, Japan. Rowing at the Olympic & Paralympic Rowing Regattas Rowing became an Olympic sport in 1896, at the first Olympic Games of the modern era held in Athens, Greece. However, rough seas in the Piraeus harbour forced the event to be cancelled, which is why rowing won its first Olympic medals four years later, in 1900, on the outskirts of Paris. Women s events were added to the Olympic programme in 1976 and lightweight events in Three Olympic Rowing Regattas have been held in Asia, including: Tokyo 1964, Seoul 1988 and Beijing Para-rowing first appeared at the Paralympic Games in 2008 and is looking forward to its third Paralympic participation in In non-olympic years, both Olympic and international boat classes compete at the World Rowing Cham- 6 Media Guide Copyright 2013 FISA & Infostrada Sports, all rights reserved >

14 World Rowing Championships 4.3. World Championship Competition Description The Boats Boats or shells were traditionally made from wood, but top level boats are now fabricated from composite materials such as carbon fibre and kevlar. The width of boats varies from approximately 30 cm (approximately 1 foot) for a single scull and up to 65 cm (2 feet 2 inches) for a coxed eight. Lengths of the different boat types are shown in the diagrams on page 7. A small fin is fitted beneath the boat for directional stability. A rudder is attached to the fin or the stern for steering (except on sculling boats). A white ball is attached to the bow for safety as well as for judging precision of the start and finish of races. A splashboard prevents waves from splashing water aboard. Seats are fitted with wheels which roll on runners or tracks. The Oars Oars are hollow to reduce weight, attached to the boat by adjustable outriggers. The size and shape of oars is unrestricted, the average length of a sweep oar is 3.70 m (12 feet 2 inches) and of a scull 2.85 m (9 feet 4 inches). The Regatta Races in Olympic and international boat classes are contested over 2,000m on a 6-lane course while Pararowing events are raced over 1,000m. Depending upon the number of entries in each event, there will be heats, repechages, quarterfinals, semifinals and finals. A and B finals will be contested in all events with eight or more entries. Where 14 or more crews are entered, C, D, E etc. finals will be contested. Each boat is drawn into a first-round race (the heat) with progression to further rounds depending on placings and the number of entries in accordance with the FISA progression system. Rowing follows a unique format in that crews have the benefit of a second chance if they are not successful in their first round heat. The repechage, loosely translated from French as second chance, is the name for the second round of competition which ensures that every crew has a second chance to advance from the preliminary races to the next round. Round 1: Round 2: Round 3: Round 4: Round 5: Heats after the initial round of heats, every unsuccessful crew has a second chance to advance in the repechages round. Repechages second chance to advance. Quarterfinals (only if an event has 25 or more boats competing). Semifinals (only for events with 13 or more boats competing). Finals A, B, C, D Finals (In principle, there are no more than six boats per final. The top six boats in the qualification rounds compete in the A Final, the following six in the B Final, etc. Only the rowers who finish in the top three places of the A Final win a medal.) Note: The rounds to which crews advance after each race and the number of crews advancing depends on the number of boats entered in each event as defined in the FISA progression system and is shown on the start lists and result lists. A full description of the progression system can be found in Appendix 6 of the FISA Rules of Racing. Race distance Standard 2,000m Para-rowing 1,000m Lanes There are normally eight buoyed lanes, of which six are used at one time for racing. Each lane is 13.5 m (44 feet 3 inches) wide. A draw is conducted before the beginning of racing to determine the allocation of crews to heats and to lane positions within each heat. A Seeding Panel determines in advance which crews will be seeded. The purpose of seeding is only to avoid having all the faster boats in an event being drawn into the same heat in the first round. 15 World Rowing Championships Dead-heat Rules and Procedures If there is a dead-heat between crews, there are several options to resolve it depending on the round of the competition. In many cases, the tie is resolved by having the relevant crews row a 2,000m race again in order to find a winner. If, in a final, there is a deadheat both crews will be given equal placing and the next placing left vacant with no re-row. If the tied placing is for a medal position, additional medals will be awarded. Crew changes Up to half of the rowers in all crews entered may be substituted at least one hour before the first heat of the event. A crew which has already raced in the heat of its event may not make changes in the crew, except in the case of a serious illness or injury. A single sculler who entered and falls ill or is injured may be replaced before their heat. No substitution may be made for a single sculler after their first heat. Penalties / Disqualification Rules / Exclusion The Board of the Jury may impose the following penalties: reprimand, yellow card (applying to the next round in which the crew competes), exclusion (from all the rounds of the event in question), relegation where this is specifically provided in the Rules (to last place in its race of that round), disqualification (from all events in the regatta), or any other appropriate measure in order to assure the fairness of the competition. A crew arriving at the start after the start time or causing two false starts will be excluded. A yellow card is equivalent to one false start. Crews interfering with opponents during the race may be excluded by the umpire. 14 Media Guide Copyright 2013 FISA & Infostrada Sports, all rights reserved >

16 World Rowing Championships 4.4. Competition Schedule Contingency Plan As for any outdoor sporting event, it is possible that the competition schedule may be disrupted due to adverse weather conditions. In cases where the disruption is sustained and severe, the FISA Rules allow for the implementation of certain contingency plans in order to ensure that the competition can be completed within the available days. FISA has identified a number of contingency plans or options that can be implemented, depending on the severity of the conditions and the threatened disruption to the competition schedule. These include: Changing the start times of the races and/or the intervals between races. Combining different groups on the same day Combining two rounds in the same day Combining Finals on three days, two days or all on one day. In extreme cases where, for example, the event has been affected by long periods of unrowable conditions and the time left to complete the event does not allow for all the remaining rounds, a round or rounds of racing may be omitted and an alternative qualification system used. In the case where the weather conditions are such that the course is deemed unfair, racing may be suspended, or lanes may be reallocated based on crew rankings from the immediately preceding round. If these options are not appropriate, then the race schedule may be brought forward or postponed, the time trial system may be used or a round may be omitted altogether. In the worst possible case where part of the course is unrowable but at least 1,000m is rowable, the racing distance may be reduced to 1,000m. FISA will not reduce the World Championship regatta to less than 1,000m. Media Guide Copyright 2013 FISA & Infostrada Sports, all rights reserved > 15

17 5. ATHLETES 5.1. Top 10 About the top 10 To be eligible to appear as a Top 10 Male or Female rower, athletes have to have medalled at the World Rowing Championships or Olympic Games in the current year. All-Time Olympic and World Championship results are taken into account with a weighting to favour Olympic medals three times higher than World Championship medals. World Championship medals in international boat classes are attributed half the value of a World Championship medal in an Olympic boat class. With regard to points attributed to Olympic boat classes: past Olympic boat classes cease to be considered as Olympic boat classes at the end of the year in which they were part of the Olympic programme for the last time. Current Olympic boat classes began to be considered as an Olympic boat class two years prior to the year in which they were part of the Olympic programme for the first time. Ranking is sorted according to gold medal points, then silver, then bronze. Athletes are listed in order of ranking. 21 5. Athletes 5.2. World Championship Profiles ALBU Nicoleta (ROU) Women s Eight (W8+) Women s Pair (W2-) Nicoleta Albu of Romania is no stranger to the World Rowing scene. In 2004, at the age of 16, she competed at her first World Rowing regatta in the junior women s four. Competing a further two years at international junior level, she went on to win both a gold and a silver in 2005 in the women s pair and women s eight respectively, and then a bronze in the pair in She claimed her first senior World Rowing Cup title in 2009 in the women s eight that went on to take silver at the 2009 World Rowing Championships. Albu took two silver medals around her neck from these championships, as she doubled up in the women s pair. A six-time European Champion, Albu has shown her versatility as a rower, competing in the pair, quadruple sculls and eight. In the wake of Romania s successful history in women s sweep rowing, Albu hopes to emulate this success and is motivated by the prospect of a gold medal at the Olympic Games. BATTISTI Romano (ITA) Men s Double Sculls (M2x) In 2004, a young Italian stepped onto the international scene. Racing in the Italian junior men s eight, his name slipped in amongst others, but it would not stay that way for long. At the 2007 World Rowing Under 23 Championships Battisti won his first gold medal in the men s coxed four and followed that up with yet another gold at under-23 level in the same boat class one year later. Entering the senior level he placed second in the men s four at the 2008 European Rowing Championships. He won two World Cup gold medals in the men s coxed pair before adopting the men s double sculls as his preferred boat class. That is when Battisti s career took off. He and his partner Alessio Sartori won the 2012 Final Olympic Qualification Regatta and went on to take home a silver medal from the 2012 Olympic Games in London. This year he won the European Rowing Championships with new partner Francesco Fossi and took second at the Samsung World Rowing Cup in Lucerne. Battisti is currently a student and lives in Piverno, Italy. In his free time he also plays basketball and enjoys fishing. CHAMBERS Richard (GBR) Lightweight Men s Double Sculls (LM2x) The Belfast-born rower is a newcomer to the double and sculling on the world stage in general. He has spent most of his career in the lightweight men s four. In his first season in the four, 2007, Chambers earned his first World Championship title. After finishing a disappointing fifth at the Beijing Games, Chambers spent a season off the water in He returned to rowing in 2010 and to the boat he had unfinished business in the lightweight four. Chambers was on the podium for every World Rowing Cup and World Championship regatta from 2010 on and took a second world title at Lake Karapiro in the year of his comeback. London 2012 brought its own pressure on Chambers, rowing on home waters in front of tens of thousands of British fans. In a nail-biting sprint to the line, Chambers and his crew missed out on Olympic gold by the smallest margin of all the Olympic finals 0.25 seconds. Chambers opened this season in the lightweight double alongside his brother Peter with gold at the World Cup in Sydney and has since added silver and bronze to his 2013 medal haul. CROW Kim (AUS) Women s Single Sculls (W1x) Kim Crow is Australia s rowing sweetheart. At the London 2012 Olympic Rowing Regatta she was the only athlete of the 549 entered to race in two different 20 Media Guide Copyright 2013 FISA & Infostrada Sports, all rights reserved >

22 5. Athletes boat classes: the women s double and the women s single sculls. Not only did she double up but she also earned twice as many medals as any other medallist at the regatta as she took silver with partner Brooke Pratley in the double and bronze in the single. Crow s beginnings in the sport of rowing were in the women s eight and she then dabbled in every other open-weight female Olympic boat class; from the pair to the quad and then to the single and double sculls. Crow opened up 2013 racing the single on home waters at the first Samsung World Rowing Cup regatta of the season and made easy work of the final, taking gold. She repeated her winning performance at the World Cup in Lucerne and looks as though she has the speed to do it again at the World Rowing Championships. DUNKLEY-SMITH Joshua (AUS) Men s Four (M4-) Aged just 24, Joshua Dunkley-Smith is one of Australia s top rowing talents. He made his debut on the international rowing scene in 2009 when he finished fourth in the men s four at the World Rowing Under 23 Championships. In 2010 he took a giant leap in terms of progress, earning World Cup gold in the four, but this time it was at senior level. Later that same year he won bronze in this boat class at the senior World Rowing Championships. He and his crew repeated that performance in In 2012 Dunkley-Smith again proved his worth to Rowing Australia selectors and took up position in the stroke seat of the men s four, sitting in front of rowing legend Drew Ginn. After experiencing a thrilling season-long rivalry with Great Britain, Dunkley-Smith and his crew rowed to Olympic silver at the London Games. In 2013 Dunkey-Smith returned to the four with 2012 crewmate Will Lockwood, joining with two new but promising oarsmen. They rowed to World Cup gold at both the Sydney and Eton Dorney editions of the series, settling for silver behind the United States in Lucerne. EDWARD Julia (NZL) Lightweight Women s Double Sculls (LW2x) Going to the Olympic Games has been on Julia Edward s mind since she was a child. At the age of 21 this dream became a reality. At the London Olympics Edward raced in the lightweight women s double sculls where she finished ninth with partner Louise Ayling. Last year was quite a year for Edward. In her first international regatta with Ayling, the duo set a new World Best Time in the lightweight women s double sculls. This time still stands at 6: In their second international race together, at the 2012 Samsung World Rowing Cup in Munich, the duo won a World Cup gold medal. After the Olympics Edward had no hesitation to continue rowing and aim for a second Olympic Games. She trialled her way back into the lightweight double and, now with Lucy Strack, she raced to gold at the Samsung World Rowing Cup in Sydney and then to bronze at the World Cup in Lucerne. This is Edward s fourth season on the New Zealand national team as she heads towards her second senior World Rowing Championships in Chungju. FULARCZYK Magdalena (POL) Women s Quadruple Sculls (W4x) When Magdalena Fularczyk stood on the podium at the London Olympic regatta course receiving her bronze medal in the women s double sculls, she cried. Fularczyk had just finished the race of her life. She, along with partner Julia Michalska, had earned the first Olympic medal in Polish women s rowing. On her first Polish national team as a junior Fularczyk raced in the double. She medalled and medalled again the following year at the under-23 level. Thus Fularczyk s talent was spotted early. In 2009 she was partnered with Julia. The duo clicked instantly and at the World Rowing Championships that year, in front of a home crowd in Poznan, they Media Guide Copyright 2013 FISA & Infostrada Sports, all rights reserved > 21

23 5. Athletes became World Champions. This gold medal was the first ever World Championship title for Polish women s rowing. After injury put the duo out of action for most of the 2010 season, they came back to take bronze that year at the World Rowing Championships. Leading up to the London Olympics the unbeaten British crew was dominating the double. Still Magdalena and Julia battled on with an Olympic bronze medal their reward. GLOVER Helen (GBR) Women s Pair (W2-) Helen Glover holds a special place in British rowing history. Along with former partner Heather Stanning, the pair rowed to Olympic gold in This medal was Great Britain s first gold of the 2012 Games and was also the first ever Olympic gold won by a British women s crew, despite the haul of silvers and bronzes they had collected at past Games. Glover and Stanning s medal is a representation of the great success of the British women s rowing programme. Glover came into the sport in a less traditional way than many, having been recruited through a talent identification programme. Not every athlete in a talent ID programme goes on to become a champion but Glover has, and is testament to the success that such programmes can have. Since her debut in 2010, she has earned two World Championship silver medals and eight World Cup gold medals. For 2013 Glover has teamed up with new partner Polly Swann and already the combination is showing winning speed. Having won the overall 2013 World Rowing Cup, unbeaten in all three regattas of the Samsung World Rowing Cup series, Glover has opened up her Rio Olympiad in a promising fashion. GROHMANN Tim (GER) Men s Quadruple Sculls (M4x) When looking at the profile of Tim Grohmann, what stands out is that there are not many regattas at which he has not medalled. In his international debut in the junior men s quadruple sculls he took home a silver medal. Add to that three more medals from before he reached the senior level. In 2009 Grohmann began his medalling streak at the senior level by winning the third stage of the World Rowing Cup in Lucerne. With the exception of two close fourth-place finishes Grohmann, as a member of the German men s quadruple sculls, then medalled at every World Rowing regatta he entered through to this year s Samsung World Rowing Cup in Lucerne. This medalling streak included the 2012 Olympic Games where he and his crew blasted across the finish line to become Olympic Champions. Grohmann first started rowing in high school. He attended a sports-focused high school, intending a career in swimming. Instead, his swimming coach suggested he try another sport, like rowing or triathlon. One year later he was in the junior men s quadruple sculls competing for Germany and he hasn t looked back. HACKER Marcel (GER) Men s Single Sculls (M1x) One of the more colourful characters in the world of rowing, Marcel Hacker suits the individual personality needed to be a successful single sculler. Hacker began rowing as an East German in Four years later he rowed for a unified Germany on the junior national team winning the men s quadruple sculls. The following year, Hacker won the junior single and a year later finished second in the under-23 single. Hacker s talent was recognised and at age 20 he was placed in a team boat on the senior national team. Hacker moved to the single in 1999 and, apart from a short stint in the quad ten years later, has resolutely remained Germany s top single sculler. At the 2000 Olympic Games Hacker won bronze, which remains his sole Olympic medal. Two years later 22 Media Guide Copyright 2013 FISA & Infostrada Sports, all rights reserved >
