1 Welding Fabrication (WF) Manufacturing Skilled and Technical Sciences Contests Contest Guide Please review the following guidelines for the Illinois state competition that will be held on Friday, April 12 th, Now is the time to brainstorm and practice your welding project. The supplied blueprints are in different formats. Some information is in the notes, some on dimensions, and some information is inferred off of the drawing. Pay attention and you will be fine. Your fab team will have 4 hours to complete the project. Keep in mind your team and project will be judged throughout the 4 hour timed competition, so manage your time wisely! Project Theme: Fire Pit Material List Supplied by Committee Qty. 1 4 x 4 11ga Plate Qty long 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 x 1/8 Angle Iron Qty x1/8 flat bar Qty. 1 4 x 4 ¾ #9 expanded metal Qty. 2 Weld on hinges Welding Consumables Supplied By Committee 3/32 Lincoln Electric 7018 SMAW Electrodes.035 ER70-S6 Lincoln Electric MIG wire Items That Must Be Supplied By Teams: All personal protective equipment Hearing and/or ear protection Welding helmet with appropriate filter plate/lens and protective cover plate/lens in a flip or slide front. Auto dark helmets are permissible. Spare spatter and filter lenses/plates for arc welding helmet and oxy-acetylene goggles or face shield. STUDENTS ARE NOT PERMITTED TO BRING ANY TEMPLATES. Teams must bring their own hand and power tools. (Recommended grinder, square, and file at a minimum). See Welding Fabrication National Standards for more information.
2 Tools Supplied by Committee to Each Team Welding Machines and consumables. PAC Machines and consumables. Supplies from the Bill of Materials. Iron Worker Horizontal Bandsaw Chopsaw Plasma Cutters Oxy Acetylene Torches Vices and grinding tables Note There are not enough of all of these tools for all teams to have their own. They are shop tools and are to be used fairly among all teams. No camping on equipment will be allowed. No layout will be done at these shop tools. Measure it and mark it at your station, then cut it at the tool station, and allow the other teams to get on the equipment. Other Information When fabricating, sometimes parts and/or steel pieces are not supplied with the correct dimensions. If the dimensions are different than your prints, on the job corrections must be made. Notify the judges if materials are not the correct dimensions prior to any material prep. The judges will take that into consideration when judging. Uniform The uniform for the contest will be clothing consistent with industry standards. No leggings, shorts, open toes shoes, etc. Competitors are not required to wear the SkillsUSA khaki uniforms, but are required to have industry acceptable clothing on, to include leather boots. Steel toes not required. No cell phones will be allowed for any reason. Violation of this policy will result in immediate disqualification from the contest. Safety Face shields and glasses must be worn while grinding. Helmets, face shields or oxy-acetylene goggles must be worn while cutting. All proper PPE must be worn while welding, including tacking. If a team is seen tacking without proper PPE, points will be deducted from the overall score, and depending on the situation, one or more team members may be dismissed from the competition. Safety glasses must be worn AT ALL TIMES. Only one grinder or welder may be used at a time due to close proximity of teammates. Gloves must be worn at all times while handling material. Treat all supplied metal as hot at all times when handling or points will be deducted.
3 Ear plugs must be worn at all times from the start of the competition. All the various teams may be grinding, hammering, etc. at any given time so ear plugs are required throughout the competition. All major safety violations will result in immediate dismissal of the individual from the contest. The remaining members of the team will be allowed to finish the competition, but points will be deducted from the overall team s score. Scoring Type Skills Area Max Points Standard Safety 50 Standard Squareness 175 Standard Joint Fit Up 225 Standard GMAW Welds 135 Standard 7018 Welds 48 Standard Accuracy 100 Standard Overall Appearance 100 Total 833 Penalty Resume 20 Category Points Judging SAFETY 50 Each safety violation will be a 10 pt violation SQUARENESS 175 All 35 ninety degree joints will be checked for square and trueness. There are 5 pts available per joint. This is an all or nothing standard. 0 or 5 pts per joint. JOINT FIT UP 225 All 45 joints will be checked for proper fit up as per the blueprint. There are 5 pts available per joint. This is an all or nothing standard. 0 or 5 pts per joint. GMAW WELDS 135 The 45 GMAW welds layed out on the blueprint will be graded with a visual inspection. Each weld will be worth 3 pts. 0,1,2, or 3 points can be awarded per weld WELDS 48 The welds layed out on the blueprint will be graded with a visual inspection. Each weld will be worth 3 pts. 0,1,2, or 3 points can be awarded per weld.. ACCURACY 100 Accuracy of the overall dimensions of 41 x 18 will be checked. 5 points deducted for every 1/8 out of tolerance. OVERALL APPEARANCE 100 The overall appearance of the piece will be assessed at the discretion of the judges. RESUME 20 Resumes are to be turned in at orientation.
