2 Dunlop faster and more durable with 2012 Le Mans LMP2 Win This year s Le Mans 24 Hours race on June provided no end of thrills and spills over the course of the round-the-clock epic, with Dunlop the only tyre manufacturer to be represented in every class contesting the 80th running of the event. Dunlop tyres delivered the pace and performance for a fast-paced LMP2 battle which saw multiple lead changes over the course of the 24 hours and a fantastic win for the #44 Starworks Motorsport HPD ARX 03b Honda. Starworks, who finished on the overall podium of the FIA World Endurance Championship season-opening 12 Hours of Sebring, took the class lead at almost ten hours in and withstood the strong opposition in the race s most popular class to cross the finish line with a lap in hand from their nearest rival. One of the three winning drivers was Ryan Dalziel. It was a really good race for us he said. We knew we were a little bit off the one lap pace relative to some of the faster LMP2 cars so we focused on overall race pace and maximising the performance from Dunlop s tyres. The key was leapfrogging people by making more fuel stops - pitting after eleven laps rather than after twelve. We triple stinted and even quadruple stinted so the Dunlop tyre performance was a big factor in our result. It s been a great effort from everyone at the Starworks Motorsports team. Dunlop s targets for 2012 were to achieve the seemingly disparate aims of making Dunlop LMP2 tyres capable of faster lap times and last for longer distances. Both targets were achieved in style. The pole position lap was over three seconds faster than last year s, while the race s fastest LMP2 lap was a comparable margin quicker too. In terms of durability, Dunlop tyres were able to maintain their pace through four stint durations. The #43 Extreme Limite Aric took their team name to heart with their tyre stategy, completing a hitherto unheard of six stint spell on the same set of medium compound Dunlop tyres, which delivered consistent performance throughout. The 80th running of the Le Mans 24 Hours was a fantastic event for Dunlop said Jean-Felix Bazelin, Director, Dunlop Motorsport. At the start of the race we knew we would win the LMP2 category as all competitors had chosen to use our tyres. In this situation, we could have decided to relax our tyre development, but instead we set ourselves high targets. We wanted to see faster lap times and we wanted to see tyres which lasted longer. We achieved both of these goals. Pole was over three seconds faster than last year. Teams regularly completed four stints and we didn t see any drop-off in performance. We even saw six stints completed on one set of tyres by Extreme Limite. Our engineers did an outstanding job. Dunlop tyres were chosen by all twenty cars in the LMP2 class as a reflection of the dominant category performance in 2011 where Dunlop won the class at Le Mans, in the Le Mans Series and in the WEC predecessor, Intercontinental Le Mans Cup. ADR-Delta wins LMP2 Award and tyre prize Dunlop awarded ADR-Delta a set of free tyres for setting the race s fastest LMP2 lap. The 3m s, set by Jan Charouz in the team s Oreca 03 - Nissan on lap 253, was considerably faster than last year s best in class, at 3m s. Podium for Krohn Racing Dunlop s GTE Am category team, Krohn Racing, scored a well-deserved third in class with their Ferrari 458 Italia with drivers Tracy Krohn, Niclas Jönsson and Michele Rugolo, the final of whom did more than his fair share of time behind the wheel. Twenty four hours is a long time if you have to drive it, and I drove a lot in that race! said Michele. It was a very changeable week in terms of weather conditions so that makes it satisfying that our result was good. We saw rain, cold, dry and warm. It made it difficult to get the setup always right. Throughout the race the Dunlop tyres were very consistent and I am very happy. For sure, our race was not perfect and we were not as fast as some of the cars we were racing, but third position is a good result for the championship, especially when it s double points here at Le Mans. Art Car thwarted by mechanical failure Dunlop s 2012 Art Car Competition winning livery on the #66 JMW Ferrari 458 Italia had a promising but ultimately short-lived challenge. After 204 laps were completed, with drivers Jonny Cocker, James Walker and Roger Wills in action, a CV joint problem stranded the tyre-striped car out on track. motorsport.dunlop.eu MAY

Race derived Grip and Braking for the road VLNChAMPIONSHIP ROWE Racing and Dunlop win in the closest VLN race of all time Dunlop enjoyed a fantastic success in Germany with AMG Customer Sports Technical Partnership team ROWE Racing who won the fifth race of this season s Veranstaltergemeinschaft Langstreckenpokal Nürburgring or VLN with the closest race ever over the world-famous Nordschleife. Drivers Jan Seyffarth and Alexander Roloff powered their Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG to the first win of the season for Dunlop and development partner ROWE with the victory also the first triumph of an AMG-Mercedes in the 2012 VLN GT3. Crossing the line in the open tyre competition race, Roloff took the chequered flag by seconds from his nearest rival, Marc Lieb in the Manthey Porsche. The duo s dicing had thrilled the fans and spectators of the keenly contested championship which races exclusively on the fearsome Nordschleife. That was certainly one of the toughest races of my life said Roloff. The last few laps were an incredible fight. I was getting everything I could out of the car - and I am overjoyed that it was enough thanks to the constant performance from our Dunlop tyres. It s a real compliment to Dunlop, who yet again had the right tyres for the prevailing conditions in the Green Hell. The sister ROWE car succumbed to a test accident, meaning a time penalty of one minute and a pit lane start. Despite this, Michael Zehe and Marko Hartung staged a remarkable comeback which was rewarded with the excellent fifth place in GT3. 4 2 MOTO UPDATE Rounds four to eight of the Moto2 World Championship have seen four different winners and three title leaders in the exclusive Dunlop category. Marc Marquez (Suter) had been in command heading to Le Mans, but was caught out by wet race day conditions at the notoriously slippery circuit. While Marquez pondered what might have been - having smashed the pole record by 0.8 sec in qualifying - Thomas Luthi (Suter) took his first win of the year and Pol Espargaro (Kalex) moved into the title lead. A dry Catalunya saw a dramatic clash between Marquez and Espargaro, while Andrea Iannone (Speed Up) used the 302/3838 tyre combination to hold off Luthi s 717/3838 mix by just 0.083s! Iannone s winning time was 22 seconds quicker than last year, but it was Luthi who broke the lap record by over a second and took the championship advantage. Cold and blustery conditions for the British GP made grip an especially sought after commodity. Most opted for the softer 302 front, including winner Espargaro, although runner-up Scott Redding (Kalex) proved the harder 717 in combination with the softer 3855 rear could be just as competitive around the high-speed Silverstone circuit. Third for Marquez put the pre-season favourite back on top, with former leader Luthi again slaying lap records, this time by over two-seconds! Espargaro covered the 106km distance 50 seconds quicker than any previous British Moto2 winner. Slight tweaks to the Dutch TT circuit at Assen automatically meant a new lap record in a race that saw an early spill for Espargaro and return to victory for Marquez, building the Repsol rider s lead to 23 points. Front tyre choice was evenly split, while the soft rear was a near unanimous decision. Following the introduction of the new profile fronts in Jerez, Germany s Sachsenring saw the debut of a new Dunlop rear in the form of the ATR14 construction, designed to replicate dual compound qualities from a single tread compound. Despite limited dry running, 26 of the 33 riders selected it for the race, where Marquez took the new tyre to victory in partnership with the 302 front. Mika Kallio (Kalex) rode the 717 front and dual-compound W919 rear to second place and Alex de Angelis (FTR) also claimed his first 2012 podium - setting a new lap record in the process. 17th in wet qualifying, Espargaro charged to fourth in the race, but couldn t prevent Marquez s title advantage ballooning to 43 points. 5 Moto2 and Moto3 Indianapolis 19 August 3 MOTO UPDATE Dunlop s championships on the MotoGP bill get just one visit to the US, as they tackle the home of motorsport in the USA, Indianapolis. A tough track surface with banking makes for one of Dunlop s toughest challenges of the year. What s Coming Next? Eight races into the inaugural season of the all-dunlop Moto3 World Championship and the new 250cc four-stroke class continues to have fans on the edge of their seats with the blink and you miss it action. How close? A nail-biting round seven at Assen saw the top 15 riders cross the finish line covered by seconds. That made it the third closest race of all-time, when compared with the previous 125cc two-stroke class, which ran from 1949 to 2011! Dunlop has created three different slick tyre compounds for Moto3 - hard, medium and soft - with a combination of two front and two rear compounds available at each event. Frenchman Louis Rossi (FTR Honda) made it four different winners from the opening four rounds with a debut Grand Prix victory in front of his home fans at Le Mans in May. Maverick Vinales (FTR Honda) - a non-finisher at Le Mans - then began his title fight-back by becoming the first repeat winner at the following Catalunya round. Catalunya marked the first of three successive Vinales victories - all claimed using the medium compound front and rear. Vinales set his fastest lap on the last lap to secure a tight 0.9s triumph over Luis Salom (Kalex KTM) at Silverstone, followed by a 0.8s victory over Cortese (KTM) in the Assen classic. Round eight in Germany saw the Dunlop wet weather rubber tested to the limit when a torrential rainstorm soaked the circuit - delaying the start of the race - which then took place on a drying track. With eight of 27 laps remaining a clear dry line had developed, but the wet tyres held up to the challenge incredibly well, no better illustrated than by Cortese setting the fastest lap on the last lap. 80,000 fans cheered the home star to victory by 0.6s over Alexis Masbou (Honda). A dream day for Cortese was made complete as he retook the title lead by 18-points from Vinales, who finished outside the points. Cortese is the only rider to have scored in every round and has been off the podium just once. Vinales holds the edge in terms of wins, with four to Cortese s two, with ten different competitors already claiming a podium finish. Six different riders have recorded a fastest race lap. With Salom 44-points from Cortese, the championship could become a Cortese-Vinales contest - but the race winners and podium finishers remain anyone s guess. Motocross LIVE TWEETS FROM THE GRID! 6 Scheivlak Zandvoort Netherlands A plunging, high-speed, blind right-hander, Scheivlak is lesser known, but right up there with Eau Rouge and Paddock Hill Bend for the challenge it presents. Entered with a dramatic sweeping approach, coming over a blind bend. Changing cambers in the braking zone don t engender confidence as you enter the seriously fast and technically very difficult turn. Eau Rouge to Le Raidillon The undulating roller-coaster that is Spa presents numerous challenges. The track layout features one of the greatest compressions seen by race tyres on any circuit as cars streak through the downhill to uphill transition from Eau Rouge to Le Raidillon which brings a smile on the face of almost all race drivers. Paddock Hill Bend Brands Hatch - UK A fast right hander, with the exit dropping away from underneath the car, Paddock Hill Bend offers one of the greatest challenges in motor racing anywhere in the world whether it is taken on two wheels or four. A fan favourite in the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship, where battles into, through, and sometimes out of this corner provide delights every year. Imagine what it was like when Formula 1 still raced there. Jean-Felix Bazelin, Dunlop Motorsport s General Manager: In particular, the compression forces put on a tyre through the Eau Rouge / Le Raidillon combination are greater than experienced at any other circuit in the world. This means we need to pay particular attention to the strength and structural integrity of the tyre construction which at this point is working at the extreme of its operating window. Nordschleife corners Nürburgring - Germany Corkscrew Laguna Seca - USA One of the most iconic corners in the world, the Corkscrew is a left-right combination which a precipitous drop in its midst. There s a crest to cover in the approach to the corner, meaning that the driver and their tyres are working hard before they even enter the Corkscrew, which is entered hard on the brakes with a late turn in before the ground disappears beneath you after the first apex. If you think it s difficult in a car, imagine what it s like on a bike where the riders need to position their weight perfectly through the turn and then immediately negotiate the next left hand, off camber, downhill corner. An awesome complex of corners. The Nordschleife features over 70 corners in over 25km duration and takes drivers days rather than laps to learn it. The road course features a diverse mixture of surface and corner types to put Dunlop s tyres through their paces, and frequent weather diversification is often order of the day. And night. The Nordschleife circuit is one of the most heralded of tyre test destinations in the world. Fuchsröhre Maximum compression: The Fuchsröhre is one of the most extreme challenges on Nordschleife. Full throttle through the sink and maximum G-forces of 3G and above. So the tyre needs to withstand three times the normal load on it, and still deliver maximum grip. DUNLOP S McPhillamy Park Mount Panorama Bathurst - Australia Degner Suzuka - Japan Entered after the Dunlop Curve, the Degner One / Degner Two combination provide a fantastic challenge at Japan s most challenging race circuit. Used for the Formula 1 Grand Prix and the legendary Suzuka 8 Hours motorcycle race, the two turns named in honour of motorcycle rider Ernst Degner. Arguably the most difficult of Mount Panorama s many famous turns, the corner entering McPhillamy Park is the highest point of the race. The combination of speeds over 200 kph, and undulations intimate with the left had turn into Skyline sees cars dancing on their tip-toes as the physics of adhesion is scarcely adhered to. An epic corner to watch during qualifying when drivers dance over the top of this challenging corner. Craner Curves Donington - UK Turn 3 Phillip Island - Australia Mutkurve (Courage bend) Absolute confidence in the tyre needed: After Bergwerk there is the long left corner, also called Mutkurve (Courage Bend). The driver needs absolute trust and confidence in the tyre because the curve can be driven full throttle at high speeds but it s a very fine line between the perfect racing line or getting it wrong here. A downhill right-left combination which will forever be remembered for Ayrton Senna s first lap in the wet of the 1993 European Formula 1 Grand Prix at Donington Park and a section beloved of drivers and riders. Depending on the machine being used, and the skill of the pilot, the Craner Curves can be taken flat out, or with skilful lifting of the accelerator when some speed curtailment is required. Corners are the essential testing component of every racetrack, it s where the right tyre choice makes all the difference. Here we rate some of Dunlop s favourites. A fast downhill left hand corner with a drop-off, often afflicted by wind at the exposed venue, pushing Moto2 and Moto3 riders wide as they try to maintain speed and position themselves correctly for the next turn. Turn three offers a high-speed challenge not only for the Moto2 and Moto3 riders; it also gives the tin top contained drivers in the V8 Supercar Series plenty to think about.

7 Carlile chooses Dunlop to Conquer Nürburgring 01 A motorcycle rider from the UK chose Dunlop s GP Racer D211 tyres to set a blistering new lap record of 7m10s bridge to gantry at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, surpassing the previous motorcycle lap record by an incredible 20 seconds. Andy Carlile, a self-taught mechanic from Cumbria in the UK, set the flying lap amazingly on a 2005 Yamaha YZF-R1, bought crash damaged for around 4000 in The 33-year old motorcycle racing enthusiast and part time hotel worker has great knowledge of the merciless Nürburgring, having completed a few thousand laps in his spare time! The GP Racer D211 tyre, derived from the motorsport D211 GP race product, has given Dunlop well over 170 podium finishes, more than 25 rider championships in top-class Superstock/Supersport and hundreds of club level race wins. Its performance embodies Dunlop s race to road philosophy, bringing race winning technology to road tyres. To have finally set this lap time it is an absolute delight and I really think it s possible I could drop into the 6 minute bracket in the future said Carlile. If anyone had said that before this record they would have been laughed at, but now it is looking realistically achievable. Commenting on the GP Racer D211 Carlile added: The results were astonishing - NTEC is great. The GP Racer is an amazing tyre - very trustworthy and communicative, it provides excellent results fast. I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience with Dunlop s D211 GP Racer; returning to lesser tyres at any time in the future is going to be a disappointing day! EWC Le Mans 24 Hours 8-9 September The second round the clock epic in the FIM Endurance World Championship is the season finale in Expect to see action, delight and turmoil right up to the chequered flag. Green is the colour for Dunlop at Le Mans in Dunlop Motorsport is proud to be associated with the innovative and exciting new GreenGT H 2, the innovative prototype electric / hydrogen competition car which will participate in the 2013 Le Mans 24 Hours. On board as technical partner for the exciting new project, Dunlop will develop tyres specific to the torque vectoring requirements of electric motors which are electronically controlled to deliver maximum torque to the wheels. Designed to provide a clean and efficient energy solution, the GreenGT H 2 has hydrogen fuel cells providing a linear power of 340Kw / 460Hp, and in parallel, a new lightweight twin-engine powertrain, providing up to 400kW or 540Hp. With electronic control and telemetry of the latest generation, the powertrain will ensure the very best performance from the distinctive-looking prototype on the track. It s a very interesting project, it s very innovative, explains Jean-Felix Bazelin, Director, Dunlop Motorsport. The car has four wheels, but everything under the bodywork is revolutionary. There is no piston engine and it s powered by hydrogen which is the most abundant chemical substance and it only emits water. For that reason, it s like a dream coming true. From the tyre perspective, it is an interesting challenge. It s a new world in terms of harnessing the power and the torque. The electric motors allow very precise management of the power and torque delivery at every point of the track. Allying this capability to our computer simulation technology means we can open a lot of doors to new constructions, compounds and specifications of tyres which we have not even thought of yet. We only see a world of opportunities with this project and they probably go further than we can imagine. The GreenGT H 2 is due to take to the track for the first time in public on August 25 at the Silverstone round of the FIA World Endurance Championship. What s Coming Next? WEC Silverstone 26 August The FIA World Endurance Championship comes to within a stone s throw from Dunlop Motorsport s Birmingham base for the first event since Le Mans. Expect close racing at the venue of the British Formula 1 and MotoGP Grands Prix with the all-dunlop LMP2 class expected to deliver the closest and most exciting racing.

8 What s Coming Next? Suzuka 8 Hours 29 July A classic motorcycle race. It s a round of the FIM Endurance World Championship, but it s much more than that as the Japanese manufacturers unleash Suzuka-only specials complete with crack riding squads for eight hours of battling the competition and the superb twists and turns of Suzuka. FASTEST? A question often asked by Moto2 and Moto3 fans, is how can riders set their fastest laps on one of the last laps of a race? Well, there are many factors to be considered. A racing machine, whether four wheel or two, which is powered by fuel and combustion gets lighter during the course of a race as the fuel is used and its weight goes, quite literally, up in smoke. This is a significant factor for cars, and still a valid factor for motorcycles. Less weight means a lighter machine and faster lap times. On a motorcycle, the weight of the fuel is usually carried quite high on the machine, so any weight lost even though a motorcycle carries less fuel than a car is weight lost from the right area to assist better handling, and faster lap times. Another area which assists a rider in going faster is track condition improvement. Every time a rider completes a lap during dry conditions, the circuit surface gets better. This improvement comes from the circuit surface being cleared of dust and debris, as well as a layer of rubber coating the track itself. This rubber left stuck to the track can form a chemical bond with the rubber still on the tyres, giving higher levels of grip, and allowing faster cornering. Dunlop s tyres are designed to deliver consistent and durable performance. This can be contrasted with Formula 1, where the tyres are designed to degrade with the performance diminishing sometimes alarmingly so. In Formula 1, this tyre performance is sought in order to assist with strategy and overtaking possibilities for the heavily aerodynamically critical machines. In order to deliver consistent performance, the tyres need to imbrue the rider with confidence. This confidence comes in a large part from tyre performance which is predictable, not peaky. The edge of adhesion needs to be felt through the tyre by the rider, not something that comes as a surprise. This is a critical aspect of Dunlop s tyre design philosophy; the tyres need to be communicative for the rider to extract the best results. Dunlop s Moto2 and Moto3 tyres are designed to deliver consistent performance throughout their life just as any rider would want from the Dunlop tyres ridden on the road. This means they can be called upon to go faster as the track conditions improve and the motorcycle gets lighter. In a sport where the human-technical relationship is crucial to success, familiarity and confidence also play a part in closing lap speeds. The more consecutive laps a rider completes, the more familiar they become with grip levels, which will often have changed since the last time they were on track. This familiarity leads to increased confidence, resulting in a rider pushing harder as the race goes on. Other factors for consideration are desire and race tactics. As the laps tick by and the chequered flag gets closer, so a rider s opportunities to make up a position diminish. Riders compete in races to win, so the adrenalin and competitive desire push them to make the most of the last few laps as they bid to go one better on track. In addition, with overtaking on two-wheels much easier than on four, riders often wait until the last laps to either overtake or shake-off a closely following opponent. In the case of an overtake, the aim of a late pass is to reach the chequered flag before a retaliation can occur. By contrast, a cunning rider can defend his position by holding back slightly and thus masking his true strengths, before surprising his opponents with a sudden burst of full speed in the closing stages. Dunlop s tyres give riders the confidence to push at their maximum late in a race, and that s why riders like them so much. 9 1 MX UPDATE Paulin - revelation of the season. Paulin was back on the podium in Portugal with second overall in the event, thanks to a moto two win at the rough and rutted Agueda circuit. Team-mate Boog took sixth in the event. In Belgium, Paulin took fifth overall, but Sweden saw an event of damage limitation with seventh overall his worst result of the season barring a mechanical non-start in Mexico. Honda World Motocross have not had plain sailing this season. In Mexico, Evengy Bobryshev picked up bronchitis, whilst team-mate Rui Goncalves was already nursing a tendon injury from a previous round. Both continued to suffer in Brazil, meaning a Latin American excursion the pair would rather forget. Coming back to Europe, Bobryshev had a fall in France, whilst Goncalves struggled with arm pump. Portugal looked better, with Goncalves up to fifth in moto two, before a stall dropped him to sixth, with his team-mate one place behind. Bobryshev s woes continued however, with a chest injury he would carry to the next event in Belgium, one where Goncalves broke a rib. Bobryshev bounced back with a second place in qualifying in Sweden, but was soon bouncing his arm off a rock, requiring stitches and retirement from the event. Goncalves meanwhile suffered being hit by another rider in qualifying, then falling prey to mechanical difficulties in the first race before taking seventh in moto two. Dunlop MX race coordinator Eddy Seel sums up the season so far: The fight is really exciting this year for the championship title, I m always ready at the podium with the yellow caps in my hand! It s been a fast and furious couple of months for Dunlop s partners in the MX1 World Championship, with events in Mexico, Brazil, France, Portugal, Belgium and Sweden from mid-may to mid-july. Dunlop s star has been the revelation of the season so far, with Kawasaki Racing rider Gautier Paulin, who sits after nine rounds within 33 points of the championship lead. While in moto two a freak accident caused by a rock rolling into his path meant he dropped to fifth, before fighting back to third.
