1 2016 NEW ZEALAND SECONDARY SCHOOL ULTIMATE CHAMPIONSHIPS Event Details: Date Monday 4 Tuesday 5 April 2016 Venue Cost Owen Delaney Park, Taupo $260 per team (includes New Zealand Ultimate affiliation fee). Other Key Details Team will be 5-a-side on the field with a recommended squad of 10 players. Open and Girls divisions will be offered. Teams should aim to travel on Sunday 3 April as the tournament will begin early on Monday 4 April. Tournament should finish early enough on Tuesday 5 April (approximately 3.30pm) to be able to travel home. 2 TOURNAMENT INFORMATION, RULES AND REGULATIONS You are invited to enter a boys, or a girls team into the NZSSUC tournament being conducted by New Zealand Ultimate. Mixed teams are also eligible, but will play with the boys in the open grade. All schools are welcome to attend there are no qualification criteria. The skill level of teams is expected to be varied and the draw will be constructed to attempt to match teams of equal ability as much as possible. We strongly encourage (where possible) girls to enter the girl s division, rather than play with a mixed team in the open division. Combining with other schools is a possibility to generate a girls team. Eligibility To participate in this competition a player must be under 19 years of age at the 1st of January in the year of the competition and will be bona fide full-time students at the school, participating in all the normal college study programmes while taking part at any level of the competition as per NZSSSC eligibility criteria for secondary schools. The principal is required to sign the team entry & registration forms of any teams entered in tournament as verification that the players listed are bona fide full time students of the school and they meet NZSSSC eligibility criteria for sec schools. The closing date for entries is Monday 14 March Composite Teams Where a school does not have a sufficient number of students to form a viable ultimate team to play in a division, a school may apply to play in a composite team with another school subject to the following guidelines: All other eligibility rules regarding age, year and enrolment are met. There is agreement between the Principals of the schools involved. The Principals of the schools involved agree that one Principal accepts responsibility for the composite team. In the instance of disciplinary or judicial proceedings both Principals (or their delegates) must attend all meetings. The team will be called by a name that indicates that more than one school has contributed players. Composite teams are eligible to play in play-offs games including the final, but are not eligible to win their respective divisions.

3 Registration Each team shall submit the Team Registration Form signed by the Principal at or before the Manager s meeting. Players may only be registered in one team per competition and may only play for that team during the competition. Fees Entry fees are payable on a per-team basis with an additional affiliation fee per player. Schools will be invoiced on receipt of an entry form and this must be paid by Friday 18 March. No teams will be able to participate with outstanding invoices. Game Times and Duration The format of the tournament and duration of each game will be dependent on the number of entries received in each division and will be confirmed on the draw. Games will occur between 9.00am and 5.00pm on Monday and 9.00am and 3.30pm on Tuesday. Games will be centrally timed by the Tournament Director and will start and finish on the hooter. When the hooter sounds to end the game, the game finishes immediately. If the disc is in the air at the sound of the hooter, the result of the pass will stand, but there will be no further play. During playoff games, if the scores are tied after the hooter, play will continue until one team scores (ie sudden death). Points System The following points system will be used in Round Robin or Pool-play games: Win 3 points Draw 1 points Loss 0 point Default -1 points Note that when calculating score differential for tie-breakers, the score for the defaulted game will be the average score differential for all other games played in that round.

4 Tie Breakers In the event of a number of teams finishing a round tied on the same number of points for qualification to playoffs, the following guidelines will be used as tie breakers: 1. Number of games won, counting only games between the teams that are tied 2. Number of games won, counting only games in the current round 3. Goal difference, counting only games between the teams that are tied. 4. Goal difference, counting games against all common opponents 5. Goals scored per game, counting only games between the teams that are tied. 6. Goals scored per game, counting games against all common opponents. 7. Fewest games forfeited. 8. Disc accuracy contest Results/Officiating/Duties All teams have a responsibility for maintaining accurate score keeping during their games. As per the Rules of Ultimate, all players are responsible for making their own calls on the field. Players on the side-line should not be involved in discussions around calls unless their input is asked for by the players involved. Coaches/Managers may become involved in helping to settle a call, but should encourage players to resolve the outcome of a call themselves using the rules and the Spirit of the Game. At the conclusion of games each team must submit a score sheet to the Tournament Director, which includes the score of the game, spirit score for the opposition and MVP player from the opposing team. Score sheets must be fully completed and legible. The MVP must be recorded with first and last name (ie not the guy in the white shoes ). Failure to hand in a score sheet or to submit an incomplete score sheet may result in your team defaulting and a spirit score of 0. The match score, a spirit score and MVP for the opposition must be completed on the score sheet for the result to be valid. Uniforms All players must play in the school s recognised playing uniform. An alternative coloured shirt is also required in the event of team having similar uniforms. Appropriate footwear is required for player participation (non-marking court shoes for Indoor League, cleats or running shoes for Outdoor League). Players will not be allowed to take the field with bare feet. Cleats must be moulded or have plastic sprigs no metal cleats are allowed.

5 Team Management Ensure there is a school approved adult in charge of each team for the entirety of the tournament. Supervisors should identify each other at the start of the game. Disputes Resolution In all cases, if your team has a concern or disagreement with the opposition, this should be resolved during or following the game on a team-to-team basis. The Tournament can mediate if necessary. First Aid Teams are responsible for their own first aid. The adult in charge should be aware of any special medical conditions of a player. Ice will be available at the fields. Defaults/Late Arrivals If a team arrives late to a game, the following process should be used: o For every 2 minutes that a team is late, 1 goal will be awarded against that team and the game can be commenced at any time when the late team is ready. After 10 minute, the game is considered a default. Playing Rules of the Game All games will be played according to the 2013 WFDF Rules of Ultimate. Rules may be downloaded from The tournament is also sanctioned by the New Zealand Secondary School Sports Council and is governed by their bylaws and regulations as well. A standard 175g Ultrastar disc will be used. Rules exceptions to WFDF rules Outdoor Ultimate Team Size: Teams are 5 a-side. We recommend about 10 players per team for the tournament..

6 Substitutions: Players may substitute between points as per the standard rules of Ultimate. Players may also substitute DURING a point. To substitute during a point, the player leaving the field must high-five the replacement player on the side-line at midfield. It is recommended that substitutions take place while the team is on offense so that you don t leave an opponent unmarked. Pulls Players are encouraged to catch the pull when possible. Dropping the pull will not result in a turn-over. The pull cannot be advanced by hitting the disc forward instead of trying to catch it. Field Size School s ultimate is played 5-a-side on a smaller field. A field diagram can be found in Appendix II.

7 Appendix I SIMPLE RULES FOR YOUR ASSISTANCE Initiate Play -- Each point begins with both teams lining up on the front of their respective endzone line. The defence throws ("pulls") the disc to the offense. Scoring -- Each time the offense completes a pass in the defence's endzone, the offense scores a point. Play is initiated after each score. Movement of the Disc -- The disc may be advanced in any direction by completing a pass to a teammate. Players may not run with the disc. The person with the disc ("thrower") has ten seconds to throw the disc. The defender guarding the thrower ("marker") counts out the stall count. Change of possession -- When a pass in not completed (e.g. out of bounds, drop, block, interception), the defence immediately takes possession of the disc and becomes the offense. Substitutions -- Players may substitute between points as per the standard rules of Ultimate. For this league, players may also substitute DURING a point. To substitute during a point, the player leaving the field must high-five the replacement player on the sideline at midfield. Non-contact -- No physical contact is allowed between players. Picks and screens are also prohibited. A foul occurs when contact is made. Fouls -- When a player initiates contact on another player a foul occurs. When a foul disrupts possession, the play resumes as if the possession was retained. If the player committing the foul disagrees with the foul call, the play is redone. Self-Refereeing -- Players are responsible for their own foul and line calls. Players resolve their own disputes. Spirit of the Game -- Ultimate stresses sportsmanship and fair play. Competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of respect between players, adherence to the rules, and the basic joy of play. Marking a marker counts in second intervals up to 10 on the thrower, after which it is a turnover if the thrower is still holding the disc. The complete rules of Ultimate can be found here:
