2 February 2018 Dear Parents and Players: Welcome to Cascade Bruins Lacrosse. We are excited about our upcoming season and hope that we can work together to make it a memorable one, both for the program and for each player. Having a successful club sports program relies heavily on organization s parent participation. Our goal is for the players to feel they are part of a team and that they are gaining skills and knowledge of the game. For the parents, it is our goal to be effective communicators with all aspects of our club. Most importantly, our boys will know that their club believes in them and will do what it takes to help them be successful. This Handbook is designed to be a tool for both players and parents. 3 CODE OF CONDUCT : High School Program Student athletes participating on the team must keep in mind that they are always in the public eye. Their personal conduct, on and off the field is always subject to scrutiny of fellow teammates and students, teachers, administrators, parents/guardians, fans, opponents and media. Athletes are always representing their team, coaches, and Club and should ALWAYS conduct themselves accordingly. SUBSTANCE USE AND ABUSE The use of drugs, including alcohol by athletes is illegal. The use and possession of these substances by students participating in programs is strictly forbidden. Tobacco products have been proven to be detrimental to one s health and not consistent with our team goals. Athletes violating this rule will be subject to discipline and potential expulsion from the team. ACADEMICS believes that our players are student-athletes, with an emphasis on student. Academics must be the highest priority of our club, to ensure that we are providing a model in which our players can excel both on and off the field. WHSBLA academic standards call for every player to be passing every class that they are enrolled in. Cascade Bruins Lacrosse will require proof of this prior to the first game of the season, at a midpoint during the season, and before any post-season play. ATTENDANCE Attendance is mandatory at all practice and games. It will be taken daily. Times listed for practice are the starting times. Athletes are expected to be in proper gear and ready to go at the start time, if not they are considered late. Arriving late may result in additional conditioning. Three late arrivals will count as one unexcused absence. Five unexcused absences could result in discipline or dismissal from the team. If an athlete is going to be late to practice, he must let the coach know prior to practice. If he is going to miss practice do to sickness he must notify the coach. If they know they are going to miss practice in advance he must speak with the coach to determine if it s excusable. Missing practice the day before the game will lead to the athlete sitting out for the 1st half of the game unless the absence is directly excused by the coach. February 2018 Page 1

4 Practice is to be taken seriously at ALL times. It will be a competitive environment and is always played at game speed. The way you practice is the way you will perform which is why attendance is crucial. Be PREPARED for the weather. DRESS CODE AND EQUIPMENT The team will wear matching uniforms, gloves and helmets. They will have all their gear in their bag for all events. They will wear their team pinney to every practice and have it available for games. BEHAVIOR AND SPORTSMANSHIP Disruptive and disrespectful behavior (including use of offensive or demeaning comments) will NOT be tolerated on the field or on social media outlets at any time. Any athlete that becomes a negative influence on the team through their behavior will be dealt with in the following manner: 1. Verbal warning will be given with improvement requested. Will be discussed before or after practice. 2. Athletes after being given verbal warning will be given separate activity (skills or conditioning). They will not be allowed to re-enter activity until approved by the coach. 3. Last step, conference will be held with the athlete, coaching staff, parents and any other person needed to help discuss and seek to resolve issues. 4. An athlete who is ejected from a game will be suspended at least one game. This will be in addition to any league sanctions. ** Athletes can be suspended from the team for an indefinite period of time for inappropriate behavior or insubordination at any point. Length of which is at coach s discretion. Good Sportsmanship is essential quality that all athletes need to possess and practice. Poor sportsmanship will not be tolerated and will be addressed by the coaching staff. Guidelines 1. No cursing or swearing on the field of play (behavior) 2. Respect your teammate, coach and volunteer staff 3. Respect your opponents. Shake hands after all games. 4. Never argue with the officials, any coach or competitors. February 2018 Page 2

5 5. Flagrant fouls or throwing your equipment will NOT be tolerated. If these behaviors occur in the first half of the game, the athlete will be removed from the rest of that game. If the behaviors occur in the second half of the game, the player will be removed from the game, and suspended for the first half of the next game. 6. WE only cheer from the bench never jeer and show no emotion on umpire calls. GAME DAY & TRAVEL 1. All athletes must be at the point of departure on time ready to go. 2. Athletes will be wearing appropriate travel uniform 3. They should plan for snack food for away games. 4. Will respect the host school by cleaning up bench area after game GAME PARTICIPATION Selection of athletes for games will be based on several factors. The coaching staff will be asking athletes to put forth their best efforts. Things that will be considered: 1. Attendance and performance in practice and games 2. Athletic ability 3. Attitude and sportsmanship 4. Interaction with the team and coaching staff ** All warm up music must be approved by the coaching staff. Rationales for Participation The coaching staff will strive to put the best players on the field at all times in order to give us the best chance of competitive success. The formula is static but the players that start may vary game to game based upon a variety of factors. February 2018 Page 3

6 ACADEMIC POLICY The Washington High School Boys Lacrosse Association (WHSBLA) has adopted the WIAA policies around academic performance. In order to be in adherence, each player must be passing the equivalent of 5 classes in a 6 period class schedule. Each player will be required to provide documentation of this performance before the start of the first game and six weeks into the program. This documentation can be in the form of a print-out from an online grading system or, in the event of homeschool or running start, documentation from the registrar demonstrating passing grades and equivalent courses SCHOLARSHIP - In order to maintain athletic eligibility during the current semester/trimester, the student shall maintain passing grades, or the minimum grade standards as determined by the school district if more restrictive, in a minimum of: 3 classes in a 4 period class schedule or the equivalent credits 4 classes in a 5 period class schedule or the equivalent credits 5 classes in a 6 period class schedule or the equivalent credits 6 classes in a 7 period class schedule or the equivalent credits 7 classes in an 8 period class schedule or the equivalent credits. RUNNING START COURSES EQUIVALENT One - 5 credit quarter course One high school credit One - 3 credit semester course One high school credit Member schools may allow only seniors who are on track to graduate to initially enroll in one less class than the minimum number of classes required for other students. Seniors enrolled in one less class than other students must maintain passing grades in all classes in which they initially enrolled in order to remain academically eligible. Seniors may not drop or withdraw from a class in order to remain eligible Any class taken as part of the regular schedule of the student during the semester/trimester shall be considered to be a full time subject Schools shall establish a grade monitoring system to ascertain the student's passing status in the minimum of required classes. To monitor a student s continued academic eligibility periodic grade checks within each three to six week period are required during the current semester/trimester beyond normal grading periods. Private school students participating at their public school of residence will be held to the grade standard of the school they academically attend A student shall have passed the minimum number of classes as listed in in the immediately preceding semester/trimester in order to be eligible for competition during the succeeding semester/trimester. The record at the end of the semester/trimester shall be final, except for those credits earned in a regular, accredited summer school program or alternative educational program accepted by the school district Incompletes may be made up for credit during the first five (5) weeks of the subsequent semester/trimester. The student shall be ineligible for interscholastic competition until the incomplete(s) are cleared. February 2018 Page 4

7 US LACROSSE CODE OF CONDUCT Players, coaches, spectators, and parents are to conduct themselves in a manner that "Honors the Game". This means demonstrating respect to other players, coaches, officials, and spectators whether they are part of the home team or the opposing team. In becoming a member of the lacrosse community, an individual assumes certain obligations and responsibilities to the game of lacrosse and its participants. The essential elements in this "Code of Conduct" are HONESTY and INTEGRITY. Those who conduct themselves in a manner that reflects these elements will bring credit to the sport of lacrosse, themselves, their team, and their organization. It is only through such conduct that our sport can earn and maintain a positive image and make its full contribution to youth sports in our community, the United States, and around the world. US Lacrosse and its Youth Council support the following behaviors for those participating or involved in any way with US Lacrosse and youth lacrosse in general: The essential elements of the "Code of Conduct" must be adhered to. Sportsmanship and teaching the concepts of fair play are essential to the game, and must be taught and developed both at home and on the field during practices and games. The emphasis on winning should never be placed above the value of good sportsmanship, the concepts of fair play, or the skills of the game. Derogatory comments are unacceptable. Use positive reinforcement with players and adults alike. It should be remembered that criticism, once made, can never be retracted. The safety and welfare of the players are of primary importance. Coaches must always be aware of the tremendous influence they have on their players. They are to strive to be positive role models in dealing with young people, as well as with adults. Officials are expected to conduct themselves as professionals and in a manner that demonstrates courtesy and fairness to all parties while exercising their authority on the field. Adults involved with the game must never permit anyone to openly or maliciously criticize badger, harass, or threaten an official. Knowledge of the Rules of Lacrosse must be respected and adhered to by all who participate in the game of lacrosse, both in the letter and the spirit of the game. Attempts to manipulate rules in an effort to take unfair advantage of an opponent, or to teach deliberate unsportsmanlike conduct, is considered unacceptable conduct. Eligibility requirements, such as age and previous level of participation, must be followed. They have been established to encourage and maximize participation, as well as promote safety. 8 Team Communication The high school program will utilize several avenues to ensure that communication is clear, concise, timely, and respectful. The website will be updated with the same information. There is also a private Facebook group for players and parents to facilitate discussions, etc. Player Parent - Coach Communication If a parent wishes to discuss team-specific issues with the coaching staff, it must be done in the presence of the player. If the discussion involves another player on the team, there must be a demonstrated effort to resolve the issue between the two players before engaging the coach. At all times, the role of team captains should be utilized and escalations to the coaching staff should be done as a last resort. Expectations Good Stick work Shoot Natural develop Dev. 9 Parent Participation Program is a volunteer-managed organization, which relies heavily on the participation of parents / families. In an effort to ensure that the manpower necessary to run a strong program is shared across all families, the High School program has implemented a mandatory participation program. This program requires that every family sign up for one of the committees: Operations, Game Day, or Morale. Committee responsibilities are outlined in the Organization Chart on the next page. Signing up for the committees and / or opting out of the program occur during the registration process and committee selection could be adjusted based off of program numbers. Questions about the Parent Participation Program should be addressed to the Vice President. High School Program Roles and Committees Parent Coordinators: The parent coordinators oversee the functional operations of each team. They work with the VP of Operations to ensure that parent participation obligations are met. They work to provide clear and succinct communication to the families and players of Cascade Bruins Lacrosse. Operations: The Cascade Bruins Lacrosse Board will ensure that all tactical components of running a team are met. This includes uniforms, field equipment, player equipment, and spirit wear. Game Day Committee: This group will ensure that the day of components of our high school games are met. This includes setting up the sideline (canopy, score table) and / or participating at the table in the capacity of timer, scorebook, spotter, or sideline manager. Morale Committee: The Morale Committee will work to provide both teambuilding and fundraising events throughout the season. Teambuilding events, such as team dinners, are vital to the success of a multi-school program. Fundraising events will ensure that our team can participate in events such as a team camp without the cost being too high for each player. February 2018 Page 7

10 Parent s Guide to Lacrosse Field Layout Personal Fouls Slashing: Occurs when a player's stick viciously contacts an opponent in any area other than the stick or gloved hand on the stick. Tripping: Occurs when a player obstructs his opponent at or below the waist with the crosse, hands, arms, feet or legs. Cross Checking: Occurs when a player uses the handle of his crosse between his hands to make contact with an opponent. Unsportsmanlike Conduct: Occurs when any player or coach commits an act which is considered unsportsmanlike by an official, including taunting, arguing, or obscene language or gestures. Unnecessary Roughness: Occurs when a player strikes an opponent with his stick or body using excessive or violent force. February 2018 Page 8

11 Illegal Body Checking: Occurs when any of the following actions takes place: A. Body checking an opponent who is not in possession of the ball or within five yards of a loose ball; B. Avoidable body check of an opponent after he has passed or shot the ball; C. Body checking an opponent from the rear or at or below the waist; D. Body checking an opponent above the shoulders. A body check must be below the shoulders and above the waist, and both hands of the player applying the body check must remain contact with his crosse. Illegal Crosse: Occurs when a player uses a crosse that does not conform to required specifications. A crosse may be found illegal if the pocket is too deep or if any other part of the crosse was altered to gain an advantage. Illegal Gloves: Occurs when a player uses gloves that do not conform to required specifications. A glove will be found illegal if the fingers and palms are cut out of the gloves, or if the glove has been altered in a way that compromises its protective features. Technical Fouls Crease Violation: Occurs when an offensive player deliberately, through his own momentum, enters the opponent¹s goal crease or a defensive player, including the goalkeeper, with the ball in his possession, enters from the surrounding playing field into his own goal-crease. Holding: Illegally impedes the movement of an opponent with the ball. Illegal Offensive Screening: Occurs when an offensive player, through moving contact of his body or equipment, blocks a defensive player from the man he is playing, or impedes his normal movements of playing defense. Interference: Occurs when a player interferes in any manner with the free movement of an opponent, except when that opponent has possession of the ball, the ball is in flight and within five yards of the player, or both players are within five yards of a loose ball. Offsides: Occurs when a team does not have at least four players on its defensive side of the midfield line or at least three players on its offensive side of the midfield line. Pushing: Occurs when a player thrusts or shoves a player from behind. Stalling: Occurs when a team intentionally holds the ball, without conducting normal offensive play, with the intent of running time off the clock. Warding Off: Occurs when a player in possession of the ball uses his free hand or arm to hold, push or control the direction of an opponent¹s stick check. Withholding The Ball From Play: Occurs when a player clamps a loose ball against the ground more than momentarily or clamps the ball against his body to prevent it from being dislodged.
