Coaching Philosophy Based on my personality I am a guy of few words and my philosophy will reflect that. I plan on as my coaching experience progresses I will change and expand my philosophy based on my coaching endeavors. Based on my current experience this is what I have learned and how I feel how I want to base my philosophy on. Expectations. As a coach I expect a lot, especially since when I played sports I always expected myself to give hundred percent every practice and every game. Success. What is success? From the Webster Dictionary: The favorable or prosperous termination of attempts or endeavors. That is the definition for an individual, so how do you define a successful team? A successful teams is a combination of building relationships with your teammates, working together to accomplish tasks that are put before. Also, by living up to your commitments, your teammates, yourself, parents, and your coach you will achieve what you want. I am a big fan of coach Wooden's Pyramid of Success. Coach Wooden defines success, "Success is peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming. I will not go into depth of his pyramid, just the cornerstones since without them there is no way you can build up. First is industriousness. "There is no substitute for work. Worthwhile results come from hard work and careful planning." (Wooden) Secondly, enthusiasm "brushes off upon those with whom you come into contact. You must truly enjoy what you are doing." (Wooden) I plan on having this mounted on the wall of my office and will strive to reach the top of the pyramid. Knowledge. I prefer a fast paced offence and in your face defense. I run full court press, man to man defenses, and motion offenses with quick but good shots. I started coaching Kowalewsky 2
when I was a freshman in high school. I was only an assistant but have been coaching since. Teaching. Even though I expect a lot, does not mean I do not teach. I will go back and teach fundamentals if I have too. I believe no matter how well one player may be, there will always be more that he can learn. But every player needs to be open to constructive criticism and accept and apply it. Discipline. I will not state what will happen for players who break rules. But hope that it will not come to that. But if it does it will be dealt with at that time. I plan on being a great role model for those who I coach, teach, and work with. I want to display my spiritual beliefs into my philosophy. I am a very aggressive and in your face coach at times but will never end a conversation being upset at someone. I want to show some of the kindness that Jesus showed every single day. Based on my experience in coaching and the classes I have been taking for sports management I can use it for in my philosophy. I will be able to add more to my philosophy after I gain more experience from coaching and all the classes I have yet to take. Kowalewsky 3
Offensive Philosophy Continuing off of my philosophy with running a fast pace, shove it down your throat type of offense, I will be running a 4-out offense. With the 4-out offense you can focus on defensive mismatches and it will be easy to set up after pushing the ball up the court. I run an up tempo team. Meaning, I will push the ball and when players get tired I will sub in, not slow down the pace. If the other team slows us down and stops our fast pace offense, we will run a motion out of the 4-out offense and look to pound in the post and look for quick passes to set up open shots. Continuous movement from the offensive players will wear down defenses. With my fast paced offense my players will need to be well conditioned and reading to sprint everywhere. When they are tired I will replace them until they are rested. Also, if we are faced against a zone, the 4-out offense can easy be tweaked to defeat it. I will adapt my offense to what I have for players. There are many ways to beat different types of zones, but I believe the 4-out is the best for all around ability to break down zones. But will try to stay away from a 3-out offense since it will slow down my up tempo pace too much. I am always looking to control the tempo of the game in my favor. Kowalewsky 4
Defensive Philosophy Defensively I will press to wear the other team down. I prefer man-to-man in your face defense, but I do like zone presses focused on trapping the ball handler. The full court zone press I would run would be In the I want to pressure the inbounder, trap the first pass, and scramble to keep the up tempo pace. I want to control the tempo, I want the other team to be out of their comfort zone. We want them to feel rushed and make mistakes. The man at half court can help trap and the man on the opposite side of the court will not allow anyone behind him. Full court man-to-man will also help keep the tempo in our favor. Once they beat the press I will run either a man-to-man pressure defense focused on ball pressure and on the line and up the line denying the pass, or a zone focused on trapping the ball handler and forcing bad passes. My players will be well conditioned and be able to sprint the floor not jog the floor on the defense. Kowalewsky 5
Discipline I feel that going into detail about disciplinary actions takes away from what the players need to focus on. If you are tough disciplinary coach, like myself, you do not want to scare your players and have them worry about what will happen if they do something wrong. I will explain what is not allowed on my team and if I find out about something that is against my rules it will be dealt with then. I will warn them that they do not want to find out what will happen if they make a mistake. The only specific details I will give them is if they are caught drinking or doing drugs during the season (college) or off-season (underage) they will be removed from the team. If I am coaching college and my players are 21 I will allow them to drink during the off-season, but if they drink a lot it will only hurt their chances when they show up out of shape. If caught drinking during the season and they are 21 or older I will only suspend them for half of the season. But if that same player gets caught again they will be removed from the team. The other details I will give them deals with is academics. When it comes to minor problems, running and conditioning will be punishment. Being late for practice will cause the whole team to run. During practice you are team, if one player is late for practice everyone is punished. Kowalewsky 6
Academics Each school normally has a set GPA a student needs to maintain to be on an athletic team, and it is usually around a 2.5. I strive for excellence in everything I do on and off the court, in coaching and in life. I will ask for my players to maintain a 3.0, but will not be hard on players who are trying their hardest and only getting a 2.5. If that is the case I or a tutor will be able to work with them to try and get their grades higher. If any player is under a 2.0 and does not have a valid excuse will be suspended from all games until they are able to get their grades are higher. I will not suspend them from practices, if I do and they are able to raise their grades they will be out of shape and behind in practices. At the beginning of the season when I explain my rules on academics I will ask if any player feels like they cannot keep that high of GPA and if anyone feels like they cannot I will talk to them and set up times for myself or a tutor to help them out. Kowalewsky 7
Parents When it comes to parents I believe that once the kids are in high school the parents shouldn t really be involved too heavily in the coaching process. They should be letting their kids become their own athlete and become more mature and handle their own responsibilities. As a coach I do not handle overbearing parents well so my assistant coach will have to deal with parents on a one on one basis. I will talk to the parents if it s concerning their child s health or academics, but if it s concerning their child s playing time or my choices for playing their child I will not deal with it, my assistant coach will. Parents are allowed to come watch practices as long as they watch and do not try to interrupt or coach from the sideline. You can coach your kid at home, but when they are in my gym they are my team and will listen to me. Kowalewsky 8
Parent/Coach Contract I, agree to support this season, along with the coaching staff. I agree to facilitate the academic and off court behavior of my player in accordance to the rules stated by the coaching staff. I agree to carry myself and act appropriately towards the coaching staff, officials, and players of our team and the opposing team as well. Parent signature Coach signature Kowalewsky 9
Administration and Faculty and Student Body As head coach you must communicate with your school's administration and athletic director. Keep the faculty informed and gain their support, also make sure to ask them to inform you of players not attending class or not completing assignments. A motivational talk or punishment and knowing you keep in touch with their teachers, can help revive a student's classroom attitude. Get the student body involved by speaking at pep rallies and student assemblies. Let them know how important their support is to the success of the team. They are the "6th man". But reinforce the importance of good sportsmanship. Kowalewsky 10
Community, Booster Club, and Media Keeping the community informed is important for a good fan base. I will speak at a local service organizations and fundraisers to help the community and raise money. I do not ever want to ignore the media. Before or after a game, radio commentators often want an interview and I will make sure I am available to talk. I need to make sure to keep all comments positive and upbeat, even after a loss. Each interview is an opportunity to promote your program, school and community. I do not want my players giving interview unless it is a team interview or I am being interviewed with them. That way they cannot be cornered into talking bad about the team or school. Kowalewsky 11
Officials I as the head coach should be the only one talking to the official during the game. the players can shake hands and meet them before the game, but during have no contact with the officials. I have been a ref, I know what they go through. I love joking around with the officials. Most of them joke back and on close calls will usually go your way. If you are yelling at them all the time you will most likely get less calls in your favor. Kowalewsky 12
Scouting When I look to scout I want to focus on who their starters are and who I will put on defense against each starter. Also, I will look to see if we should run a man-to-man full court press or a zone press and the run a man-to-man or a after they break the zone. We want to look for any possible mismatches that we can use in our 4-out offense. I want to see how they respond under pressure and if they can keep up with our up tempo style of play. Also, we want to be looking for player tendencies, is one a very good shooter, or they have a huge dominate post, we need to realize and respect players tendencies and adjust for them. What type of offense and defense do they run? Does our offense and defensive set up work against their offense and defense? These are also important questions that need to be answered through scouting. Kowalewsky 13
Coach and Players Meeting In my first meeting with my coaches I want to stress to them that I expect them to be loyal and enthusiastic. I want them to speak up in practices, but not to go against what I teach. I expect them to come to me if they have questions or concerns. I want to make sure the players know that we run the team. My assistants need to accept and enforce my rules. In my first player s meeting I will go over my philosophy, my rules, expectations, and coaching style. I want to stress that basketball is a team sport and I expect them to get to know their teammates well since they will be playing together for years. I expect the players to listen to me and respect the coaches and myself. Kowalewsky 14

Motivation "The highest compliment that you can pay me is to say that I work hard every day, that I never dog it." --Wayne Gretzky Canadian Hockey Player "Don't let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do." -- John Wooden "Don't give up at half-time. Concentrate on winning the second half." -- Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant "Be more concerned with your character than with your reputation. Your character is what you really are while your reputation is merely what others think you are." -- John Wooden "The most important key to achieving great success is to decide upon your goal and launch, get started, take action, move." -- John Wooden "There are no shortcuts to any place worth going." - Beverly Sills "If you don't have confidence, you'll always find a way not to win." - Carl Lewis "Never let your head hang down. Never give up and sit down and grieve. Find another way." - Satchel Paige "Everybody pulls for David, nobody roots for Goliath." - Wilt Chamberlain "One man can be a crucial ingredient on a team, but one man cannot make a team." - Kareem Abdul-Jabbar "When I was young, I never wanted to leave the court until I got things exactly correct. My dream was to become a pro." - Larry Bird "Good, better, best. Never let it rest. Until your good is better and your better is best." - Tim Duncan Kowalewsky 17
Pyramid of Success There are two components to industriousness, which are work and planning. Since there is no substitute for work, results can only come from hard work and careful planning. Most people look for the easy way out. If we put in minimum effort we might get by in some situations, but in the long run we will not fully develop talents we have. Always be the best you can be, no matter what. Good planning and hard work lead to prosperity, but hasty shortcuts lead to poverty (Proverbs 21:5). The other cornerstone is enthusiasm, which brushes upon those with whom you come in contact. You must truly enjoy what you are doing, if you do not, how do you expect to be productive. We will always need to force ourselves to work hard in order to accomplish what we need to do. If we do not enjoy what you are doing, it will be harder to get the drive you need to work hard. Never be lazy in your work, but serve the Lord enthusiastically (Romans 12:11). Continuing with the foundation of the pyramid, the next is friendship. Friendship comes from mutual esteem, respect, and devotion. Like marriage, it must not be taken for granted but requires a joint effort. Would you rather have, successfulness in the eyes of others or in your own eyes? Reputation is perceived, while character is who you are. You want to be successful in your own eyes before in the eyes of others. A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken (Ecclesiastes 4:12). Next is cooperation with all levels of your coworkers. You need to listen if you want and expect to be heard by others. Always look to find the best way, not necessarily having your own way. Working with others will always be for the benefit for everyone. Two people can Kowalewsky 18
accomplish more than twice as much as one; they get a better return for their labor (Ecclesiastes 4:9). The next building block is to have loyalty to yourself and to all those depending upon you. To do this you need to keep your self-respect because it is the foundational quality. So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught, whether by word of mouth or by letter from us (2 Thessalonians 2:15). Moving up the pyramid comes self-control and alertness. Practicing self-discipline helps keep our emotions under control. Good judgment and common sense are essential. Knowing God leads to self-control. Self-control leads to patient endurance, and patient endurance leads to godliness (2 Peter 5:6). Being alert is to be constantly observant, which can help us to be eager to learn and improve. Stay open minded and know what you believe and defend it. So let s not sleepwalk through life like those others. Let s keep our eyes open and be smart (1 Thessalonians 5:6). Finishing up this level is initiative and intentness. Cultivate the ability to make decisions and think alone. Do not be afraid of failure, but learn from it. If you are not pushing your limits and ability you are not working hard enough. He prayed more fervently, and he was in such agony of spirit that his sweat fell to the ground like great drops of blood (Luke 22:44) To be intent is to set realistic goals, concentrating on the achievement of these goals by resisting all temptations and by being determined and persistent. She thought, If I can just touch his robe, I will be healed (Matthew 9:21). The next level includes condition, skill, and team spirit. Condition relates to your physical, mental, and moral attitudes. Rest, exercise and diet must be considered and moderation Kowalewsky 19
must be practiced, while dissipation must be eliminated. Physical exercise has some value, but spiritual exercise is much more important, for it promises a reward in both this life and the next (1 Timothy 4:8). Skill is the knowledge of and the ability to properly and quickly execute the fundamentals in a specific area. All of the fundamentals you teach throughout the lives of athletes is how they develop their true potential and talents. Do you see any truly competent workers? They will serve kings rather than ordinary people. (Proverbs 22:29). Team spirit is a genuine consideration for others and an eagerness to sacrifice personal interests of glory for the welfare of all. If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it, and if one part is honored, all the parts are glad. Now all of you together are Christ s body, and each one of you is a separate and necessary part of it. (1 Corinthians 12:26-27). Poise and confidence make up the next level of the pyramid and, in my opinion, are some of the most important to being the best player and coach possible. These also cannot be possible if you do not have the other parts of the pyramid. The ability to just be yourself is huge, you should be able to be at ease in any situation. You never want to fight yourself, you want to be able to be confident. Being confident is being able to respect without fear. It may come from being prepared and keeping all things in proper perspective. If you are coaching against a team that is the best in the nation, you cannot dwell on that fact. You need to be confident, if you are not your team will be unmotivated and believe they have no chance. The top of the pyramid consists of competitive greatness. You always want to be at your best when your best is needed and you want to be able to find enjoyment of a difficult challenge. You do not need to be superstars to reach competitive greatness, all we have to do is learn to rise to every occasion. It is not always about winning, but learning to give what we have to give. Don t worry about a thing, David told Saul. I ll go fight this Philistine (1 Samuel 17:32). Kowalewsky 20
