Colgate has never opened at home against a Patriot League foe. Ten of this year s 30 Preseason All-Patriot League team members are from Colgate, with four from the offense, five defense and one special teams. Fordham was next with five. Nick Wheeler was tabbed Patriot League Preseason Defensive Player of the Year by multiple outlets, including the league coaches and SIDs. Wheeler also was chosen for the 2018 STATS FCS Preseason All-America Third Team. Thirteen notes of interest on today s game against the Crusaders Right out of the gate, Colgate and Holy Cross open the 2018 season in Hamilton. It s just the second time the Raiders have begun a season against a conference foe and the first since they won at Georgetown back in That thriller sparked a 15-game winning streak leading all the way to the NCAA championship final. The Raiders trail the series against Holy Cross by a margin but have won six straight, matching their best streak against the Crusaders (also ). Last year s 45-7 victory marked the largest winning margin by the Raiders over Holy Cross in 80 football meetings, dating to Colgate-Holy Cross begins the Patriot League Football Game of the Week schedule on Stadium. Two more Raider home games, Sept. 22 against Lafayette and Oct. 13 versus Cornell, also are featured. Colgate s most recent season-opener at home resulted in a overtime win over Albany in Ten of this year s Preseason All-Patriot League team members are from Colgate. Fordham was next with five, followed by followed by Lafayette and Holy Cross with four apiece. Colgate had 12 first-team selections on the Phil Steele Preseason All-Patriot League squad. Nick Wheeler enters 2018 riding a streak of eight consecutive games with at least one quarterback sack. After playing last year s first three games without a sack, Wheeler strung together 11½ over his last eight contests to post the second-best season total in Raiders history. Only Jeff King in 1979 had more in one year with 14. Wheeler was named Patriot League Preseason Defensive Player of the Year by the conference coaches and SIDs. He also earned a spot on the 2018 STATS FCS Preseason All-America Third Team. The junior s 14½ career sacks place him 11th on the all-time Colgate record list. North Carolina A&T has won its last 13 games to top the list, followed by defending national champion North Dakota State with six and Ivy League champion Yale also with six. Senior defensive back Tyler Castillo is tied for the active Patriot League lead in interceptions with seven. He needs just three more to join the Colgate career top 10 (See Colgate Records Watch). Castillo was named to the Preseason All-Patriot League Team after earning All-Patriot League First Team honors last year. That includes two Patriot League titles and two Coach of the Year honors. Hunt s overall record is and he led the 2015 Raiders to the NCAA playoff quarterfinal round. He spent 19 years as a Raiders assistant coach before succeeding Dick Biddle as head coach after the 2013 campaign.
