(15) Thirteen notes of interest on today s game against the Mountain Hawks Colgate ended a challenging stretch of games and picked up some needed momentum ahead of this week s Patriot League opener with a 21-7 win at Cornell last Saturday. The Raiders posted a program-record nine sacks in the game. The Raiders lead the back-and-forth series against Lehigh by a margin, but the teams have split the last 10 meetings. Colgate is 18-9 all-time against Lehigh in Hamilton. Saturday s Colgate-Lehigh football game is being livestreamed by Stadium and the Patriot League Network. Matt Martucci handles play-by-play with Andy Gresh the analyst. Darren Chiappetta is the producer. The game also is appearing on Stadium s Twitter feed and a number of over-the-air television stations across the country. Grant Breneman claimed the first hardware of his collegiate football career. The rookie QB threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score as Colgate knocked off rival Cornell 21-7 last Saturday in Ithaca. For those efforts, Breneman was named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week both by the conference voters and by College Sports Madness. Colgate won two years ago en route to an undefeated Patriot League season. Lehigh turned the tables 45-1 last year in Bethlehem and marched to a perfect run of its own. Colgate and Lehigh have split the last 10 meetings. Raiders quarterback Grant Breneman was named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week after throwing for two touchdowns and running for another in Colgate s 21-7 win at Cornell. Each team added won one championship when not winning this game: Lehigh in 1999 shared the title with Colgate, and Colgate in 2005 shared it with Lafayette despite the loss to the Mountain Hawks. Think Pat Afriyie is important to Colgate s defense? Try a program record nine sacks in his first game back. Afriyie contributed one of those sacks for the 25th of his career in the All-American s first game action since being injured in the opener at Cal Poly. (See Records Watch chart below) Nick Wheeler made his first career start one to remember. The sophomore earned STATS FCS National Defensive Player of the Week honorable mention after registering a career-high three sacks last Saturday at Cornell. Wheeler was one of six Raiders with at least one sack in the game. The St. Louis native posted eight total tackles at Cornell just one week after turning in a career-high 11 against Furman. Alec Wisniewski recorded his third interception of the season last Saturday at Cornell. It was one of four by the Colgate secondary in that game, with Abu Daramy-Swaray, Ben Hunt IV and Jordan Jefferson all nabbing the first picks of their careers. Daramy-Swaray also posted a career-high 10 tackles. Colgate s linebacking corps is picking up the slack for the injured T.J. Holl. Trent Williams returned to game action last Saturday after a two-game injury absence and recorded a season- high nine tackles. Sophomore linebacker Nick Ioanilli, a recent addition to the starting lineup, has contributed career-high tackle totals the last two games. He posted eight against Furman and then nine at Cornell, including his first collegiate sack. Dillon DeIuliis saw his first game action of the season and recorded a career-high five tackles. Holl was the NCAA FCS leader in tackles per game at 1.0 through four games but is out indefinitely because of an injury he suffered in the fourth quarter against Furman. Holl has 52 tackles for the season after posting 16 at Cal Poly and 18 at Buffalo. Thomas Ives returned to prominence after being sidelined for basically three games because of injury. Ives led a balanced receiving corps in the win over Cornell with four catches for 5 yards and his first touchdown of the season. Owen Rockett continues to lead in all three receiving categories with 17 catches for 199 yards and two touchdowns. His 17 receptions already are a personal season high (14 for 28 last year). Alex Mathews led the Raiders in rushing for the second straight game with 78 yards at Cornell. Malik Twyman posted season highs with 1 carries for 48 yards and accounted for 5 of the 50 yards on Colgate s clinching drive, including the 7-yard TD reception. Head coach Dan Hunt owns a 1-5 Patriot League record for his first three seasons leading the Raiders, including a perfect 6-0 mark and conference championship in The Raiders that season won twice in the NCAA playoffs on the road and reached the quarterfinal round for the second time in program history (200 national runner-up). Hunt s overall coaching record is He spent 19 years as a Raiders assistant coach before succeeding Dick Biddle as head coach after the 201 campaign. Colgate put on a near pictureperfect display for three quarters and then held off a furious Cal Poly rally to post a intersectional victory over the No. 2 Mustangs. With the ESPNU cameras rolling and a national TV audience tuned in, Colgate jumped to a 20-0 lead through the first 45 minutes. James Holland Jr., returned from injury to rush for a 17-yard touchdown and Alex Mathews added a 57-yard scamper to highlight the Raider offense. Carmine Scarfone emerged relatively unscathed from his first collegiate start and first collegiate snap. Scarfone led his opening drive of the game 75 yards in 11 plays for a Chris Puzzi 27-yard field goal. He finished 8-of-15 passing for 94 yards and one interception. Puzzi added a 5-yarder in the third quarter for Colgate s 20-0 cushion. Cal Poly scored TDs with 14:22 and 7:07 remaining in the game and was driving for the winning points in the closing minutes. The Mustangs had converted three straight fourthdown conversions before they were foiled on the final attempt when Abu Daramy-Swaray batted down a Khaleel Jenkins pass with 7 seconds left. Richmond won 8-1 last year in Virginia en route to an NCAA playoff quarterfinal appearance. This year s contest was much more defensive in nature. Colgate led 14-7 entering the fourth quarter thanks to a defense that refused to yield inside the red zone. The Raiders played without injured defensive starter Pat Afriyie, Trent Williams, Tyler Castillo and Ben Hunt, while rookie quarterback Grant Breneman made his first career start. But this night belonged to the Bulls, who streaked to a 0- halftime lead and chalked up 486 yards of total offense for the game. Six-foot-7 quarterback Tyree Jackson led the way, throwing for 184 yards and rushing for another 97. T.J. After Colgate limited Furman to three-and-out on the opening drive, the visitors scored three straight touchdowns. Colgate s only score of the first half came in the closing seconds when rookie Grant Breneman hit junior Owen Rockett with a 15-yard TD pass. Those two hooked up again in the third quarter as Breneman posted his first multi-td passing game and Rockett caught two scoring tosses for the first time in his career. This one was for Frank. Colgate ended a challenging stretch of games and picked up some needed momentum ahead of next week s Patriot League opener with a 21-7 win over Cornell. The victory also closed a rough week on a better note for Raiders head coach Dan Hunt. Hunt s father, Frank, died the previous Saturday in St. Johnsville, New York, not far from the family home in Canajoharie. He was 80. In the locker room after the game, the players presented an emotional Hunt with the game ball. Colgate s defense welcomed Pat Afriyie back to the fold and threw a sack party in his honor. A record-breaking sack party, no less. Nine times the Raiders took down Cornell quarterback Dalton Banks in the Big Red backfield, including career game highs from Nick Wheeler (three) and Connor Buck (two). They even let Afriyie in on the fun with his 25th career sack early in the second quarter. It was the preseason All- American s first game action since being injured in the opener at Cal Poly. Thomas Ives also was back on the field after a two-game injury absence. He led a balanced receiving corps with four catches for 5 yards and his first touchdown of the season. Colgate s three scoring drives covered 10, 12 and 15 plays. The clincher was a thing of beauty: 50 yards in 15 plays, eating up 6:46. This was the 99th meeting between Colgate and Cornell. The Raiders trail in the series but have won 16 of the last 19 and eight of nine. Next year s 100th meeting takes place Oct. 1.
