The Huskers (1-0) survived a tough early season test in posting a win over Eastern Illinois. Nebraska overcame a six-point second-half deficit, as Glynn Watson Jr. scored 17 of his 21 points in the second half. The junior guard was one of four Huskers in double figures in the win, as Evan Taylor, Isaac Copeland and Isaiah Roby helped in NU's balanced attack. Nebraska got to the foul line 39 times, the most by the Huskers since the campaign, but shot less than 60 percent after shooting 80 percent in its two exhibition contests. Roby, a 6-foot-8 sophomore, provided a major spark off the bench, setting career highs in points (11), rebounds (13) and blocked shots (six) in just 26 minutes of action off the bench. Roby's six blocked shots were the most by a Husker since 2005, and the third-highest total in the nation entering Sunday's games. Last year, Roby blocked just 25 shots in 30 contests. Nebraska used a strong defensive effort down the stretch, allowing one field goal in a span of 8:28 to turn a deficit into a seven-point lead. In all, the Huskers blocked nine shots on the night and held EIU to below 40 percent shooting. First-year North Texas coach Grant McCasland got the Mean Green off to an impressive start with a win over Eureka College on Friday. In the win, UNT shot 58 percent from the field and put six players in double figures, led by Roosevelt Smart's 23 points. Monday's game continues a stretch of four games in nine days, as the Huskers travel to St. John's on Thursday as part of the Gavitt Tipoff Games. 9 Nebraska had nine blocked shots in the season opener, the Huskers' highest singlegame total since Jan. 5, 2011, vs. Savannah State. In that game, UNT put six players in double figures while the 122 points was the third-highest total in school history and highest by the school since Roosevelt Smart led all scorers with 23 points on 8-of-10 shooting, including a trio of 3-pointers, while Ryan Woolridge added 21 points on 10-of-14 shooting. Under first-year coach Grant McCasland, the Mean Green has one of the youngest rosters in the country, with nine freshmen or sophomores on the roster. McCasland went at Arkansas State last season in his first year as a Division I coach. McCasland, who was an assistant coach at Baylor from , helped the Bears to four NCAA Tournament appearances in that span, including an Elite Eight finish in Despite the youth, North Texas returns three starters, including A.J. Lawson, who topped UNT in scoring last season with 11.4 ppg, among its five returning letterwinners. UNT was picked to finish 11th in Conference USA this season. Nebraska leads the all-time series, 4-0, although the teams have not met since a win at the Devaney Center on Nov. 29, In that game, Nebraska scored the first 12 points and built an early 18-2 cushion in leading from wire to wire. Aleks Maric had 26 points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots, while Ryan Anderson had 18 points and five caroms. This will be the fourth of five meetings between the teams in Lincoln, as the Huskers also posted wins in 1972 and 1988 in Lincoln while also winning the 1974 matchup in Denton. LAST TIME: NEBRASKA 72, EASTERN ILLINOIS 68 Glynn Watson Jr. scored 17 of his game-high 21 points in the second half, as Nebraska overcame a tough shooting night to pull out a win over Eastern Illinois. The Huskers (1-0) used an 18-5 second-half run, holding Eastern Illinois to one field goal over 8:28 to turn a six-point deficit into a advantage after a pair of Evan Taylor free throws with 46 seconds remaining. Watson had five of his points in the run, as his three-pointer tied the game at 54 with 5:54 remaining. The Huskers, who shot just 23-of-39 from the line, were unable to put the pesky Panther squad away until the final seconds. Eastern Illinois cut the deficit to on a threepoint play from D Angelo Jackson with 12 seconds left before Watson hit four straight free throws to ice the game. The 6-foot junior finished with 21 points, including 8-of-10 from the foul line, and three assists to pace four Huskers scoring in double figures. Evan Taylor and James Palmer Jr. had 12 points apiece, while sophomore Isaiah Roby stepped up with his first career double-double off the bench. Roby finished with 11 points, 13 rebounds and six blocked shots in 26 minutes, setting personal bests in all three categories. His six blocks were the most by a Husker in nearly 13 years. Nebraska shot just 38 percent from the field, but held EIU to 40 percent shooting, forced 16 turnovers and blocked nine shots. HUSKERS ENJOY BLOCK PARTY VS. EASTERN ILLINOIS One of the biggest differences between previous seasons and is the Huskers' interior size, and it made a defensive impact in the opener. Nebraska had nine blocked shots, which was the most in Tim Miles' six seasons (previous high was seven on seven different occasions, most recently against Iowa on Jan. 5, 2017). Isaiah Roby's six blocks were the most by a Husker since Wes Wilkinson also had six in In fact, no Husker had blocked five shots since the campaign. POSTGAME NOTES VS. EIU Nebraska improved to (.680) all-time in season openers and has won 17 straight season openers. Nebraska improved 26-2 in its past 28 season openers dating back to the campaign. Under Tim Miles, the Huskers have won all six of their openers by an average of 21.0 points. Isaiah Roby blocked six shots, the most by a Husker since Wes Wilkinson, who had six blocked shots at Creighton on Dec. 11, Roby also collected his first career double double, setting highs in both points (11) and rebounds (13). Glynn Watson Jr. finished with a game-high 21 points, his eighth career game with at least 20 points. Jordy Tshimanga grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds, topping his previous best of 10 set against Wisconsin on Feb. 9, WATSON AMONG B1G RETURNEES Category Rk. Per Game th Per Game 1.6 3rd WATSON RETURNS TO ANCHOR HUSKER BACKCOURT Glynn Watson Jr. gives Miles one of the top returning guards in the Big Ten in The 6-foot junior averaged 13.0 points, 2.6 assists and 1.6 steals per game in He is ninth among all Big Ten returnees in scoring and third in steals. Watson s 13.0 points per game is the secondhighest returning average by a Husker guard in the last decade, trailing only All-Big Ten performer Terran Petteway s 18.1 ppg entering the season. Watson opened the season with a game-high 21 points and three assists in the win over Eastern Illinois. It was his eighth career 20-point effort. Watson had 21 double-figure performances as a sophomore, including a career-high 34 point game against Iowa. His 34-point effort tied for 10th on NU's single-game scoring list. He had three games with five steals (vs. Dayton, Clemson and at Indiana) and finished third all-time among ON ON TWITTER /NEBRASKABASKETBALL /HUSKERHOOPS ON FACEBOOK ON FACEBOOK IG: HUSKERHOOPS IG: HUSKERHOOPS

5 sophomores with 50 steals. Only Cookie Belcher (75) and Erick Strickland (60) had more during their sophomore season. Watson has always been in the clutch, as he shot 40 percent from 3-point range, 85 percent from the foul line and had a 3-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio in the last four minutes and OT last season. In the opener, Watson went 5-of-6 from the foul line in the last four minutes, including four straight in the final 11 seconds to preserve the win. With 717 points entering the season, Watson is just 29 points away from 60th place on Nebraska's career scoring list. COPELAND, PALMER TRANSFER INTO HUSKER STARTERS While Watson is a two-year starter for the Huskers, junior transfer Isaac Copeland is the Husker with the most starting experience. Copeland started 49 games in two-plus seasons at Georgetown, helping the Hoyas to the 2015 NCAA Tournament. In his last full season, Copeland started 33 games, averaging 11.1 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game. He played in seven games last season, averaging 5.4 points per game before he was sidelined with an injury. Copeland had eight points and five rebounds in the Huskers' opener against Eastern Illinois. Copeland is one of two Huskers who sat out after transferring last season. James Palmer Jr. made his Husker debut on Saturday and totaled 12 points, three rebounds and a pair of assists. Palmer played at the University of Miami for two seasons, averaging 3.4 points in the Hurricanes' Sweet 16 team in Palmer and Copeland will look to join a list of all-conference performers in their first season under Miles, joining Andy Ogide (CSU, 2009), Terran Petteway (NU, 2014) and Andrew White III (NU, 2016). TRANSFERS BRING WINNING PEDIGREES One common trait among Nebraska s four Division I transfers is postseason experience. Isaac Copeland, Anton Gill, James Palmer Jr., and Duby Okeke have all been parts of NCAA Tournament teams at their respective schools. Gill played on Louisville s Elite Eight team in 2015, while Palmer helped Miami to an NCAA Sweet 16 berth in NCAA EXPERIENCE Player Previous School Postseason Experience Isaac Copeland Georgetown NCAA (2015) Anton Gill Louisville NCAA (2014, 2015) James Palmer Jr. Miami NCAA (2016); NIT (2015) Duby Okeke Winthrop NCAA (2017) GILL AND COPELAND: LIKE FATHERS, LIKE SONS Nebraska senior guard Anton Gill and junior forward Isaac Copeland will be together on the court for the first time in college this winter, but it won t be the first time the pair had played together. Both Gill and Copeland played on the Garner Road AAU program and were teammates at Ravenscroft High School, leading the school to a 31-4 record and the 2012 North Carolina 3A State Championship. Anton s father, Anton Sr., and Isaac s father, Ike, played together at East Carolina for two seasons ( ) and the duo helped East Carolina to a 1993 Colonial Athletic Association tournament title, winning the tournament title as the No. 7 seed. MCVEIGH PROVIDES A SHOT OF JACK While the Huskers return just two starters, the Huskers also return their sixth man in junior Jack McVeigh. The 6-foot-8 forward from Cabarita Beach, Australia, averaged 7.5 points per game, but has averaged 8.9 points per game on 41 percent shooting over the final 15 contests, becoming one of the Big Ten's best sixth men in the process. McVeigh posted five double-figure scoring efforts in Big Ten play, including four off the bench. He keyed NU's comeback at Ohio State, scoring all 11 of his points in the second half in the Huskers' win. MILES LETS THE KIDS PLAY Tim Miles has not been afraid to rely on youth during his tenure at Nebraska. If history is any indication, freshmen Thomas Allen, Nana Akenten and Thorir Thorbjarnarson will have chances to earn significant playing time early in their careers. In the last two seasons, NU has started at least one freshman in 31 of 36 Big Ten games (86 percent). Last year, Jordy Tshimanga made nine starts in conference play, while Isaiah Roby started four Big Ten tilts. Over the past five seasons, Nebraska has started at least one freshman in 64 percent of its games. First-year players at NU have flourished under Miles, as newcomers have accounted for at least 50 percent of NU s scoring in two of the past four seasons. Among NU's freshmen, Thomas Allen had six points and a pair of assists in 16 minutes off the bench in the win over Eastern Illinois on Saturday. JORDY AND DUBY IN THE MIDDLE Nebraska will rely on a different look inside with the departure of two of its top three inside players. Sophomore Jordy Tshimanga and graduate transfer Duby Okeke will handle a majority of the minutes on the interior this season. Tshimanga, who averaged 5.0 points and 4.0 rebounds per game, started nine of NU's final 11 games as a true freshman and emerged as a pleasant surprise Averaged 7.4 points and 5.9 rebounds per game in his last 11 games and reached double figures three times, Put together his best offensive effort of the season vs. Michigan State on Feb. 2, totaling 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting and nine rebounds in 24 minutes, setting season bests in points, rebounds and minutes. Totaled 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds in 17 minutes in the win over Penn State. Grabbed a season-high 10 rebounds, including five offensive boards, in just 14 minutes vs. No. 7 Wisconsin. Enjoyed a strong performance at No. 3 Kansas on Dec. 10, where he established then-season bests in points (10), rebounds (eight) and blocked shots (two) in 19 minutes of work. Put together a solid debut, grabbing a career-high 11 rebounds and dishing out a pair of assists against Eastern Illinois. Okeke is a defensive presence who spent the past four years at Winthrop before graduating in May. The 6-foot-8 center played in 94 games at Winthrop and made 24 starts last season as the Eagles reached the NCAA Tournament. He averaged 3.2 points on 61 percent shooting and 3.9 rebounds per game last season. Okeke is sixth nationally among returning players in blocked shots with 165. He finished his career as Winthrop's single season (72; ) and career leader in that category. He ranked 20th nationally and led the Big South in blocked shots in and was fourth in blocked shots in Okeke has 26 games with at least three blocked shots in his collegiate career. HUSKERS SIGN TWO DURING FALL PERIOD Nebraska Men s Basketball Coach Tim Miles announced on Nov. 10 that high school seniors Brady Heiman and Xavier Johnson have signed with the Huskers for the season. Heiman is a 6-foot-11 center from nearby Platteview High School, where he is a four-year starter for Coach Tim Brotzki. A three-star recruit by Rivals, he becomes the first high school senior to sign a Letter-of-Intent with the Husker basketball program since the fall of As a junior, he was an honorable-mention all-state Class B pick by both the Omaha World- Herald and Lincoln Journal Star, averaging 15.7 points on 55 percent shooting, 8.9 rebounds and 4.8 blocks per game, as Platteview went 21-5 and reached the state tournament for the second straight year. He had seven double-doubles as a junior, including a 17-point, 11-block performance. Xavier Johnson is a 6-foot-2 guard who attends Bishop O Connell High School in Arlington, Va. A four-star recruit by ESPN, Johnson was one of the top-10 players in Virginia by ESPN, while Rivals and 247Sports both rated Johnson as a three-star prospect. 247Sports listed him as the No. 10 combo guard nationally in the class of As a junior, Johnson averaged 10.5 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game for Coach Joe Wootten, as Bishop O Connell finished with a mark. Johnson s best performance as a junior was a 32-point, eight-rebound, four-assist outburst against Gonzaga Prep. Johnson plays AAU ball for Team Takeover and Coach Keith Stevens, helping Team Takeover win The 8 Tournament in Las Vegas last July with a 16-point effort in the title game. He also helped his team earn a runner-up finish at the Peach Jam this past summer. BIG TEN MOVES TO 20 CONFERENCE GAMES IN The Big Ten Conference Administrators Council approved a change to the format of future men s basketball schedule at its annual meeting in October of Beginning with the season, the men s basketball schedule will increase to 20 conference games. Under the new men s format, teams will play seven opponents twice and six teams once (three home, three away) in a given season. The three in-state rivalries Illinois/Northwestern, Indiana/Purdue and Michigan/Michigan State will be played twice annually, while the new schedule will also include a regional component to increase the frequency of games among teams in similar areas. Over the course of a six-year cycle (12 playing opportunities), in-state rivals will play each other 12 times, regional opponents will play 10 times, and all other teams will play nine times RULES CHANGES The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel announced several slight rule changes ahead of the men's basketball season, most notably extending the coach's box to 38 feet. The coach's box in previous years was 28 feet, but NCAA Men's Basketball Rules Committee members believe this will allow coaches to improve communication with their teams, especially when the teams are at the opposite end of the court. The panel also approved a rule permitting a reset of the shot clock to 20 seconds when the ball is inbounded in the frontcourt after a foul by the defense. If more than 20 seconds remains on the shot clock, the shot clock will not be reset. This season, fans will also notice that throw-in spots will occur from more consistent spots in the frontcourt when the offensive team retains possession after a non-shooting foul or other stoppages in the game. The location of all throw-ins in the frontcourt will be determined by an imaginary line drawn from the corner of the court to the intersection of the lane line and the free-throw line. If the stoppage of play is inside this area, the throw-in will occur on the end line 3 feet outside the lane line. If the stoppage occurs outside this area, the throw-in will be at the nearer sideline at the 28-foot mark. Deflections will continue to be put back in play at the nearest out-of-bounds spot. Throw-ins in the back court will continue to be at the nearest spot. ADDITIONAL RULE CHANGES Referees can use the instant replay rule in the last two minutes of the second half or last two minutes of overtime to see if a secondary defender was in or outside the restricted-area arc but only when a call has been made. If the player is in the restricted area, a block will be called on the defender. If the secondary defender is in legal guarding position and outside the restricted area, a player-control foul will be called. The Big Ten and Mid-American conferences experimented with this rule last season. A mandatory minimum of 0.3 second will be taken off the game clock when the ball is legally touched, and an official immediately blows his whistle. A legal screen was redefined to require that the inside of the screener's feet be no wider than his shoulders. The cylinder rule was adjusted to allow more freedom of movement for the offense. If a defensive player straddles an offensive player's leg in a way that prohibits him from making a normal basketball move which now includes pivoting contact that creates a common foul will be called on the defensive player.
