And, the future Wildcats fulfilled those descriptions this spring. Six of UK s football signees a full 30 percent of the class won state championships in track and field during their prep careers, taking home a combined 13 state titles. -Wide receiver Eric Adeyemi (Southridge HS/Miami, Fla.) won state championships in 110-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles. His best times in the events are 13.9 seconds and 36.7 seconds, respectively. -Lineman Chandler Burden (La Salle HS/Cincinnati, Ohio) won the state titles in the discus throw and shot put. His best mark in the discus is 192 feet, 6 inches, while his longest shot put is 61 feet, 2 ½ inches. -Wide receiver/defensive back E.J. Fields (Frankfort HS/Frankfort, Ky.) is a three-time state champ in the 400-meter dash. His best time in that event is 48.7 seconds. He added the 200-meter championship as a senior, with a top time of 22.1 seconds. -Defensive back Winston Guy (Lexington Catholic HS) also is a multiple winner. He won the state meet in the 100-meter dash with a clocking of seconds. His 4x100-meter relay unit also claimed the crown. -Quarterback DeAunte Mason (Pearl-Cohn HS/Nashville, Tenn.) got two state wins his junior year as part of a 4x200-meter relay and the 4x400-meter relay. -Wide receiver Gene McCaskill (Chester HS/Chester, S.C.) was part of a state championship in the 4x100-meter relay. And, Quarterback Randall Cobb was third in the 100-meter dash in his senior year and placed second in the 4x100 relay as a junior. I continue to be excited about this incoming class, Coach Brooks said. I felt good about them when they signed, and their performances validate their athletic ability and speed. Top photo, Darius Miller will bring his silky-smooth game back to Rupp Arena, but this time as a Wildcat instead of a Mason County Royal. Bottom photo, Louisville Central s Mister Cobble (#54), shown here against Belfry in the state Class 3A finals, is the fifth in-state player to commit to the UK football team for next year and the ninth overall. 11 June 27, 2008 Pinnacle Sports View Page 11 Kentucky AAU Basketball This spring and early summer has been one of the most comfortable I can remember. Just this morning, temperatures were in the mid fifties. It has made for some great outdoor excursions. During this time, I ve kept my goal of doing more river fishing, and it has given me even more pleasure than I had hoped. Last week I spent about six hours in a canoe, casting for smallmouth. It had been several years since I had learned the particulars of maneuvering a canoe. I had used one on some hunting trips, but I had never fished from one until last week. The river is so different from the lake. It seems more personal. While the lake reaches wide, the river is narrow. The lake seems to have no direction, while the river knows where it s going. The river is unpredictable and yet it is very consistent. There are many stretches along the river that are hidden from anyone other than those who choose to take a small boat down its path. It s those hideaways that not only hold fish, but hold other land and airborne animals as well. It was my first trip on the river this year, when I saw a bald eagle. Its beauty caused us to suspend our fishing until it Outdoor Truths with Gary Miller left. Moments like that are as much a part of river fishing as the smallmouth. Much of the Bible takes place around the lake. It was there that Jesus calmed the storm. It was there that Jesus walked on the water. It was the lake where He removed a coin from a fish s mouth. There s no doubt that the lake was an important back drop in the Bible. But did you know when God wanted to illustrate the blessings of those who follow Him, He used the river. David in the book of Psalms wrote, They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season without fail. Their leaves never wither, and in all they do, they prosper. And did you know there is no mention of a lake in Heaven? Only a River of Life and alongside that river, a Tree of Life that bears twelve different fruits. Now I m not saying they ll be no lakes in Heaven. But since we know there are rivers there, shouldn t we find out what makes them so special to God? And since there are rivers there, I have another excuse to go fishing. Honey, I m just getting ready for Heaven. Gary Miller gary@outdoortruths.org Brooke Smith is named the Union College Female Athlete of the Year BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - The Union College Department of Athletics announced recently that junior Marty Popham and sophomore Brooke Smith were selected as the Male and Female Athletes of the Year for Smith, a forward/center from Pineville, Ky., had a record-setting season in guiding Union to a share of the Appalachian Athletic Conference regular-season championship, the conference tournament title and a berth to the NAIA Division II National Championship Tournament. With a points-per-game average, Smith ended the season ranked third in NAIA Division II in scoring. In addition, she was 10th in field-goal percentage (.558) and 24th in blocked shots per game at In AAU play at the Kentucky Basketball Academy in Lexington, (top photo) Pineville s James David Strange works against tight defensive pressure, and (bottom photo) Middlesboro s Blaine Green lofts a shot over the Owen County defense. 12 Page 12 Pinnacle Sports View June 27, 2008 Pineville s Matt Gann gets ready to test the waters of professional golf As you go through this world, there are choices you have to make along the way. Choices that when you look back on them make you wonder what would have happened had you taken a different turn in the road instead of the one you took. Would you have been a music star with a string of hit records if you had taken that opportunity to go to Nashville and make that demo when you had the chance? If you had gone to that baseball tryout camp like you always wanted to, would you have been good enough to make someone s team? Were you good enough to write for a major publication, but didn t have the confidence to step out on the big stage in the big city and take the chance? Matt Gann doesn t want to look back later in life and have to ask himself questions like that. Matt has accomplished about all he can accomplish on the local golf scene over the past few years. He received a scholarship and played all four years he was at Morehead State University, even being named to the Cleveland Golf Academic All American team while he was there. He s won about all of our local golf tournaments at least once: The Kentucky Mountain Laurel Festival at Wasioto Winds, the Harlan Invitational, the Greater Kingsport Open, and just recently he successfully defended his title at the Middlesboro Country Club TriState Invitational making it three in a row in Middlesboro. So, Matt has reached one of those crossroads in life that at one time or another all of us seem destined to come across. The question he faces is, Can I make it as a professional golfer? He thinks that with a little luck he has a chance, and lots of folks connected to golf in the area seem to agree with him. So, because he thinks he can make it as a pro, and because he doesn t want to face that what if question later on in life, he has decided to give the professional golf circuit a try. And, because he s very talented, and an extremely nice guy, local golfers are going to make every effort to see that he gets a chance to pursue his dream, and maybe in the process let some of them share that dream with him. Wasioto Winds Golf Course will host the Matt Gann Invitational Golf Scramble and Dinner Event at the course in Pineville on July 25th (see ad below) with all proceeds from the event being used to help with the expenses related to travel, lodging, tournament entry fees, and other related expenses for Matt as he tries to make it on the pro tour. His first professional event will be in August as he tries to qualify for the Kentucky Open. After that he ll hit the road for tours through North Carolina and Florida as he tests the waters of professional golf. Call for more information about participating in this event for one of our own.
