15 2009 In The combination of a vigorous offseason conditioning program that developed team camaraderie, a handful of new coaches that blended team chemistry, and another top-tier recruiting class that provided an infusion of SEC-caliber talent gave the South Carolina football team renewed hope as they prepared for what many experts considered the nation s toughest schedule in The Gamecocks traveled to Raleigh to take on the North Carolina State Wolfpack in the season-opener. It was the fourth time in the five years under head coach Steve Spurrier that the Gamecocks were featured in the Thursday night season lidlifter under the glaring lights of ESPN s national stage. Despite blanking the Wolfpack by a 34-0 count to open the 2008 season, the Gamecocks went into this one as five-point underdogs. The experts assumed the one-two punch of competing in a hostile environment and facing quarterback Russell Wilson, the ACC s preseason Offensive Player of the Year, would be more than enough to subdue a young Gamecock team. But the new-look Gamecocks, with just nine seniors on the roster, were up to the challenge. Redshirt freshman Devin Taylor forced a fumble on his first snap as a collegian and Darian Stewart recovered it at the Wolfpack 14, giving Carolina its first scoring opportunity of the season. Brian Maddox culminated the short drive with a one-yard scoring plunge and the Gamecocks had their first lead of the season. While Carolina was able to win the field position battle, neither squad was able to generate much of an offensive attack for the remainder of the half. The teams combined for just 125 yards in the first two periods and the Gamecocks took a slim 7-0 advantage into the locker room at halftime. The second half proved to be much the same as neither team could sustain a drive. NC State finally got on the board late in the third quarter on a 43-yard field goal, but the Carolina defense would not let this one slip away. Twice in the final stanza, the Wolfpack moved into Gamecock territory, and twice they were stymied, with their final chance being a pass in the end zone that was broken up by true freshman Stephon Gilmore. One first down by the offense would salt the game away and Carolina got the big play it needed when Stephen Garcia hooked up with Moe Brown on a 33-yard completion on a third-and-four situation and Carolina ran out the clock in a 7-3 victory. The Gamecocks opened SEC action by traveling to Athens to face the 21st ranked Georgia Bulldogs. Most thought this would be a defensive struggle throughout. Nothing could have been further from the truth. A high-scoring, entertaining contest that lasted over four hours took place, one in which the outcome would not be decided until the game s final seconds. The Gamecocks jumped out in front with Tori Gurley on the receiving end of a sixyard pass from Garcia. After Georgia returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown, the Gamecocks responded with another Garcia TD pass, this time to Maddox. When Georgia fumbled the next kickoff, Lanning nailed his first career field goal and Carolina had built a 17-7 advantage. Backed into a corner in front of a partisan crowd of nearly 93,000, the Bulldogs would respond. They scored 24 points over the next 20 minutes while Carolina was able to muster only a pair of Lanning second quarter field goals, and Georgia took a lead into intermission. Things looked bleak for the Gamecocks when Georgia scored on its first possession of the second half in a time-consuming 80-yard drive to take a lead. But two more Lanning field goals sandwiched around a safety pulled the Gamecocks within seven at early in the fourth quarter. Lanning s five field goals on the night tied a 19-year old school record, set by Collin Mackie. On Georgia s next possession, Eric Norwood dropped into coverage and intercepted a pass, returning it 35 yards to paydirt for his third career TD. However, Lanning s extra point was blocked, a play that would come back to haunt the Gamecocks, as they still trailed, Georgia responded again when Blair Walsh hit a field goal from 42-yards out to extend their lead to with six and a half minutes remaining in the contest. Needing a touchdown to win, the Gamecocks took over inside their own 20. Behind the leadership of Garcia, who finished the night 31-of-53 for 313 yards, Carolina moved the ball down the field, converting three times on third down to keep the drive alive. But two incomplete passes from the seven-yard line, the final one batted away in the end zone, sent Sanford Stadium into pandemonium and the Gamecocks, despite winning the statistical battle, home with a disappointing loss. The Gamecocks had to put the disappointment from Athens behind them quickly as they prepared for the home opener against Florida Atlantic. A partisan crowd, including the school s 2009 Hall of Fame class and several of the football record holders, was on hand for the first of four straight games at Williams-Brice Stadium. The Gamecocks came out ready to make amends for the loss at Georgia. Sparked by a 50-yard run by Brown on the game s first play, Carolina needed just four plays and a minute-21 to find the end zone with Maddox going in from three yards out. It was Carolina s fastest touchdown to open a game since they joined the SEC. When Garcia scrambled in from 15-yards out midway through the second quarter to give Carolina a 17-3 advantage, it looked like this one would turn into a rout. But FAU put together a couple of scoring drives of its own. Only a missed extra point kept the Gamecocks on top heading into intermission, The momentum quickly turned back to Carolina when Gilmore intercepted a Smith pass on the first play of the second half. Garcia found Gurley open for a 35-yard completion and two plays later Maddox was in the end zone again and the Gamecocks never looked back. Carolina scored on its next two possessions to break the game wide open. First, they moved 90 yards in four plays as Jarvis Giles scooted 38 yards before Garcia and Gurley hooked up again on a 44-yard pass. Two plays later Maddox took a Garcia pass and found paydirt for the third time in the game. On FAU s next possession, a Norwood record-tying sack forced a fumble and put the Gamecocks in good field position. Giles carried three straight times for 17 yards, including a 12-yard scoring burst to put the Gamecocks ahead by a score, one that stood up the rest of the way. All told, the Gamecocks rolled up 516 yards of offense, including 287 on the ground, easily the high mark in the Spurrier Era at South Carolina. The national spotlight was shining on Columbia when the Gamecocks hosted fourth-ranked Ole Miss in a Thursday night ESPN contest. The Gamecocks were hoping to snap a 28-year drought against teams ranked in the top-5 and were looking for their first-ever home win against a top-5 opponent. What many thought might turn into an offensive shootout settled into a defensive struggle. Norwood showed Ole Miss and the nation why he was an All-America candidate, as he broke through to sack Jevan Snead on Ole Miss s first possession, becoming Carolina s career leader in sacks, and setting the tone for the evening. Ole Miss got on the board first late in the first quarter when Joshua Shene s 42- yard field goal culminated a 14-play drive that took over six minutes off the clock, but that would be all the Gamecock defense would allow in the first half. Carolina moved the ball effectively, outgaining the Rebels , but could only muster a pair of Lanning chip shot field goals and took a 6-3 lead into the break. On South Carolina s first possession of the second half, Garcia hooked up with Brown on a 69-yard completion, setting up Lanning s third field goal of the game. On Ole Miss s next possession, Cliff Matthews got to Snead, forcing a fumble and putting Carolina on the doorstep again. This time they converted a pair of third downs - first when Garcia found Jason Barnes for 15 yards to the 10, then when he hit Patrick DiMarco for a two-yard touchdown pass and a 16-3 advantage. Ole Miss s offense continued to sputter against the all-garnet clad defense until Markeith Summers got behind the Carolina secondary and hauled in a 45-yard TD pass early in the fourth quarter, bringing the Rebs to within a touchdown. But the Carolina defense would not let this one slip away. Eric Norwood became the school s all-time sack leader in the Ole Miss win. 90 Media Guide

16 2009 Ole Miss reached the Carolina 32-yard line with just under three minutes to play. Then, with the crowd at a fever pitch, Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt tried to outfox the Gamecocks. A carry by Brandon Bolden out of the Wild Rebel package went for a yard. A double reverse to Dexter McCluster was sniffed out and lost three. Matthews followed with his second sack of Snead before Darian Stewart preserved the win by batting down the final pass, setting off a celebration that literally shook the stadium and snapped Carolina s 23-game losing streak against top-5 opponents. Carolina next hosted in-state rival South Carolina State. Coach Spurrier and the Gamecock coaching staff knew that their neighbors to the south were one of the top FCS teams in the country and this one would be a struggle. And a struggle it was at least for a half. After a scoreless first period, Lanning got the Gamecocks on the board first early in the second period with a 30-yard field goal. Later in the quarter, Giles burst through for a 33-yard gallop to the six. Three plays later Garcia sneaked in from a yard away, stretching the lead to 10. But SC State came right back. Malcolm Long led the Bulldogs on a nine-play, 75-yard drive and took it in himself from five yards out with just seconds remaining before intermission, cutting the deficit to three. As was the case against FAU, Carolina put the game away in the second half. After a quick three-and-out for the defense, the Gamecock offense took over and drove 49 yards in six plays, with Miles toting it the final 22 yards to paydirt on a burst up the middle. Norwood kept the momentum going when he blocked a field goal attempt on SC State s next possession. Several plays later, Garcia hooked up with Brown on a beautiful 40-yard scoring bomb. On Carolina s next possession, it was Garcia and Brown connecting again first on a 23-yard completion to the 13, then on a nine-yard touchdown pass giving Carolina a commanding 31-7 advantage and giving Brown his second career 100-yard receiving game. With mostly reserves on the field, the Gamecocks tacked on another score in the fourth quarter when Reid McCollum lofted a jump ball in the end zone that Alshon Jeffery hauled in for his first career score in a Carolina win. The Gamecocks returned to SEC action the following week when the Kentucky Wildcats came to Williams-Brice Stadium looking to snap a nine-game losing streak to Carolina and defeat Coach Spurrier for the first time in 17 tries. This one turned into a coming out party for Jeffery. The true freshman showed why he was a highly sought-after recruit, catching seven passes for 138 yards and three touchdowns. He scored in the first quarter on a 10-yard pass from Garcia, hooked up again with Garcia on a sensational one-handed grab in the second period, then caught a 22-yard scoring pass in the third quarter. Garcia, capped the Gamecocks scoring with a one-yard dive midway through the fourth period, putting Carolina on top, Kentucky, playing without quarterback Mike Hartline who went out with a knee injury in the third quarter, came right back down the field. Randall Cobb, working out of the Wildcat formation, kept the ball himself six times in eight plays, accounting for 64 yards, culminating with a two-yard touchdown run with four and a half minutes remaining to pull the Cats to within two. But Matthews batted away the two-point conversion attempt, preserving the Gamecock lead. Now it was up to the Carolina offense to make a couple of first downs, milk the clock and seal the deal. Garcia came up huge on a third-and-four from the 26. He scrambled to his right and cartwheeled forward for a five-yard gain and a first down, keeping the drive alive. Staring at another third-and-six situation moments later, Miles, who finished the day with his first career 100-yard rushing effort, burst through the middle for 14 yards, putting the final nail in Kentucky s coffin in a decision. The 22nd-ranked Gamecocks faced their sternest test of the 2009 campaign when they traveled to Tuscaloosa to face the second-ranked and undefeated Alabama Crimson Tide in a nationally-televised ESPN contest. The Gamecocks were hoping to strike first on this cool October night in hopes of quieting the 92,000 fans on hand. It looked like that may happen when Chris Culliver returned the opening kickoff 33 yards and a face mask penalty tacked on another 15, giving Carolina possession inside Alabama territory. But two plays later disaster struck. Garcia s pass was intercepted by Mark Barron and returned 77 yards and Bama was on the board just 62 seconds into the game. Despite the early deficit, the Carolina defense continually rose to the occasion against the Tide, which came in averaging 37 points per game. Ellis Johnson s troops bent under a record rushing performance by Mark Ingram, but did not break for most In of the night, forcing four Crimson Tide turnovers. A 52-yard completion from Garcia to Jeffery set up the first of two second quarter Lanning field goals and the Gamecocks trailed just 13-6 at the half. The second half was much of the same with the defenses for both teams controlling the game. Neither team could mount a scoring threat until Ingram capped a six-play, 68-yard drive, finding paydirt from four yards out for the game s only offensive touchdown with just under five minutes remaining to seal the 20-6 win. The 23rd-ranked Gamecocks returned home to host Vanderbilt in the annual Homecoming game. On a night the school would honor its 1969 ACC champions and its 1984 Black Magic team, the Gamecocks were intent on not letting the underdog Commodores get the better of them for a third straight season. This one turned into another defensive struggle. The Gamecocks finally got on the board midway through the second quarter when Garcia connected on a 35-yard touchdown pass to D.L. Moore. The Carolina advantage lasted just 14 seconds, however, as Warren Norman sprinted 99 yards down the middle of the field on the ensuing kickoff to knot the game at 7, a score that held as the teams went into intermission. The second half was similar to the first, with the MVP of the game being Commodore punter Brett Upson, who kept Carolina pinned deep in its own territory for much of the night. Ryan Fowler s 21-yard field goal midway through the third period put Vandy on top, 10-7, as the game entered the final period. That s when Garcia and his standout freshmen receivers came alive. Starting from the one-yard line, Garcia hit Gurley with a strike down the sideline that the redshirt freshman hauled in with one hand for a 43-yard gain. Garcia then worked the other side of the field to Jeffery for a 23-yard completion. Three plays later, Garcia, who finished the night by completing 67 percent of his passes for 312 yards, again found Jeffery over the middle, hitting the true freshman in stride. Jeffery did the rest of the work, reaching paydirt on the 43-yard pitch-and-catch for a Carolina lead. But this one wasn t over. After three first downs and with still just over two minutes remaining on the clock, Vandy had a 1st-and-10 at the Gamecock 25-yard line. A two-yard completion and an incomplete pass brought up a 3rd-and-8 from the 23. Junior Chris Culliver blitzed from his safety position and forced quarterback Larry Smith to get rid of the ball, resulting in an intentional grounding penalty. On fourthand-long Smith was forced to scramble, but came up well short of the first down, and the Gamecocks held on for the win. Putting its 6-2 record on the line on Halloween in Knoxville, Carolina was facing a Tennessee squad that donned black jerseys for the first time in the modern era. The Gamecocks dug themselves an early hole on this rainy night, one that would prove to be insurmountable. On the third play from scrimmage, Garcia hit Justice Cunningham with a 14-yard strike, but Cunningham fumbled, giving Tennessee possession in Carolina territory. Two plays later Tennessee had a lead they would not relinquish. Carolina s nightmarish start continued on its next possession. Miles fumbled and Tennessee took over again in Gamecock territory. Four Montario Hardesty runs put the Vols ahead 14-0 just four minutes into the contest. A third Carolina fumble, this one by Garcia, gave Tennessee another short field early in the second period. This time, Crompton hit Kevin Cooper on a fourth-andgoal from the two and Tennessee had a 21-point cushion. The Gamecocks had a chance to turn the momentum to their side late in the second period. Gilmore handled a punt at his own 25-yard line, scooted to the right and burst through a bevy of Black and Orange-clad would-be tacklers en route to the end zone, only to have the play nullified by a penalty. The Gamecocks finally got on the board just before intermission. Lanning booted a career-long 47-yard field goal for Carolina s first points of the night. Another Lanning field goal cut the margin to 21-6 midway through the third period. But Tennessee responded with its only scoring drive of the night that covered more than 45 yards. Hardesty rushed for 23 yards to the Gamecock seven, then darted up the middle for his second score of the game and a comfortable 28-6 lead. The Gamecocks countered with their best drive of the night, covering 77 yards in three plays. The Gamecocks finally reached paydirt when Garcia lofted a perfect 31-yard pass to a diving Brown in the end zone, cutting the margin to Garcia finished the night with 300 yards passing, his third 300-yard game of the season. But that was all Carolina could muster. Another turnover resulted in a Tennessee field goal, accounting for the final points in a disappointing setback. gamecocksonline.com 91

17 2009 In For the second week in a row, the Gamecocks faced a tough road SEC test as they traveled to Fayetteville to take on the Arkansas Razorbacks and the league s top passing quarterback in Ryan Mallett. The Gamecocks opened the scoring with a 14-play drive that took nearly six minutes to cover 65 yards, settling for a Lanning 23-yard field goal and a 3-0 lead. With Arkansas ahead 7-3, Quin Smith snuffed out an ill-fated fake punt attempt and the Gamecocks were back in business at the Razorback 23. Garcia hit Brown for 17 yards to the six. Three plays later, the Gamecocks retook the lead as Garcia leaped into the end zone for the touchdown and a 10-7 advantage. Carolina seemed certain to take the three-point lead into intermission when they punted with under a minute remaining in the half. Taking possession at their own 24 with just 22 seconds remaining, Mallett hit tight end D.J. Williams in the flat. Williams broke a tackle and scooted down the sidelines for 69 yards before getting tripped up just short of the goal line with six seconds still showing on the clock. Alex Tejada booted a 24-yard field goal as time expired and the teams went into the locker rooms tied at 10. The Gamecocks quickly took momentum back when Garcia found Jeffery behind the Arkansas secondary on the first play of the second half. The 80-yard touchdown strike was the longest play from scrimmage for the Gamecocks in nearly three years and put Carolina back on top by a margin after the PAT was mishandled. Jeffery finished the day with 116 receiving yards, his third 100-yard game. But that would prove to be the final highlight for the Gamecocks on this day. Behind the play of Mallett, who completed 12-of-13 passes for 160 yards in the final 30 minutes, the Razorbacks scored the game s final 23 points. Despite Garcia s career-high 327 yards passing, his third straight 300-yard performance the Hogs pulled away for a victory, keeping Carolina winless on the road in league contests. The Gamecocks were happy to return to the friendly confines of a sold-out Williams-Brice Stadium. The challenge that awaited them was the top-ranked and defending national champion Florida Gators. The Gamecocks came out for this nationally televised contest donning black and camouflage uniforms in honor of the Wounded Warrior Project. On its first drive, Florida quarterback Tim Tebow hit Riley Cooper on a post pattern and Cooper did the rest, going 68 yards to put the Gators on top just three minutes into the contest. The Gamecocks responded with a time consuming 14-play, 84-yard drive, that took nearly six minutes off the clock, culminating with a Maddox one-yard touchdown plunge, and the game was tied at seven. Florida scored on each of its next two possessions to open up a 17-7 cushion, but when Caleb Sturgis missed from 52 yards, South Carolina took advantage, driving 65 yards with Garcia finding Saunders in the back corner of the end zone on a nineyard touchdown pass, and the Gamecocks were back in the game, trailing just heading into intermission. The teams slugged it out in a scoreless third quarter, with Florida misfiring on a pair of opportunities. First, Sturgis missed another long field goal attempt, then Norwood stuffed Tebow on a fourth down situation, keeping the raucous crowd energized and the Gamecocks very much alive. Carolina took over at its own 29 and marched the ball down the field. Facing a fourth-and-two at the Florida 35, Garcia improvised and somehow scrambled for a six-yard pickup and a first down. After an incomplete pass and a false start, a 12-yard completion to Weslye Saunders brought up a third and three at the Florida 22 as the third quarter came to an end. But the entire complexion of the game changed on the next play. A Garcia pass intended for Brown ricocheted in the air and was picked off by Justin Trattou. The defensive end rambled 53 yards to the Carolina 26. Four plays later Tebow was in the endzone and the Gators regained their 10-point advantage. Knowing that Carolina would be forced to go to the air the rest of the way, the nation s top-ranked defense brought all kinds of pressure, sacking Garcia four times in the final period and in the process, thwarted the Gamecocks valiant attempt to unseat a top-ranked team for the first time in school history in a final. The Gamecocks had one more chance to ensure themselves of a winning record in 2009 but it would have to come against the 15th-ranked Clemson Tigers. For the eighth time in 12 games, the Gamecocks went into the game as underdogs, as Clemson brought a six-game winning streak into Williams-Brice Stadium. When Heisman hopeful C.J. Spiller returned the opening kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown and Clemson forced a Carolina turnover on its first possession, many of the 80,574 fans on hand thought this one had all the earmarkings of another Tiger win. But the game turned on the very next possession. With Clemson moving into scoring territory, Akeem Auguste forced a Jamie Harper fumble that was recovered by Eric Norwood. Coach Spurrier then reached into his bag of tricks and brought out the Wildcat formation for the first time this season, with Gilmore at the controls. Gilmore rushed five times for 20 yards and completed a 39-yard post pattern to Jeffery, setting up Maddox s one-yard run for the game-tying score. DeVonte Holloman provided the next big play as he stepped in front of a Kyle Parker pass and returned it 54 yards to the Clemson 11. One play later, Garcia hooked up with Saunders on a 9-yard touchdown pass and a 14-7 Gamecock lead. The Gamecocks went 47 yards on 11 plays on their next possession, setting up a Lanning 47-yard field goal, matching the longest of his career, and a 17-7 advantage heading into intermission. After a 15-yard punt return by Gilmore gave the Gamecocks good field position early in the third quarter, the Head Ball Coach went to the flea-flicker with Garcia hooking up with Brown for a 25-yard completion. A 13-yard Miles run moved the ball to the 14, where Garcia found Gurley alone in the back of the endzone for another Carolina score. Meanwhile the Gamecock defense continued to stymie a Clemson attack that had been averaging 370 yards per game. The Tigers were held to just 138 yards through the first three quarters and finished the game more than 100 yards below their season average. Spiller was limited to just 18 yards rushing on nine carries. The teams traded field goals in the fourth quarter before Clemson finally got its first offensive touchdown with just under four minutes remaining to narrow the score to But Jeffery recovered the ensuing onside kick and returned it 35 yards to the four before being pushed out of bounds. On fourth and goal from the one, Garcia faked a handoff and found Saunders in the back of the endzone for the final nail in the Clemson coffin. Carolina gained the Palmetto State s braggin rights and hoisted the Hardee s Trophy after posting a convincing win. The Gameccks were invited to the fourth-annual Papajohns.com Bowl, which was played on Jan. 2, 2010 in Birmingham, Ala. The opponent was the UConn Huskies out of the Big East Conference. Frigid temperatures greeted both teams on this Saturday afternoon, with the game time temp at 27 degrees. The Gamecock offense never seemed to get unthawed, going its first five series without a first down while spotting UConn a 13-0 lead at the intermission. Penalties, dropped passes and a couple of turnovers kept the Gamecocks from mounting any sort of a second half rally. Andre Dixon, who rushed for 126 yards while winning the game MVP honors scored from 10-yards out early in the fourth quarter to seal the win for UConn. Carolina got a late TD on a two-yard burst by Maddox in a game that saw just 458 yards of total offense betwen the two squads. 18 2009 Game 1 South Carolina 7, NC State 3 September 3, 2009 Carter-Finley Stadium Raleigh, N.C. 57,583 RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) Brian Maddox had a short touchdown run while Stephen Garcia completed a key third-down pass in the final minutes to help South Carolina beat North Carolina State 7-3 on Thursday night. Garcia threw for just 148 yards on a frustrating night for both offenses, but the sophomore came through with a 33-yard completion to Moe Brown that allowed the Gamecocks to run out the final 2 1/2 minutes of the game. It gave South Carolina a second straight season-opening victory against the Wolfpack, who were shutout 34-0 in last year s meeting and failed to reach the end zone in the rematch. Maddox scored from a yard out in the first quarter and finished with 66 yards rushing, which ended up being about the most reliable form of offense for typically pass-happy coach Steve Spurrier. Garcia completed 13 of 22 passes with an interception that gave the Wolfpack a needed burst of momentum and led to N.C. State s only scoring drive. It was just one of numerous mistakes for the Gamecocks, the most costly being an offensive pass interference penalty on Tori Gurley that negated his 38-yard touchdown catch in the first quarter. There was also a low snap that killed a second-quarter fieldgoal attempt and a missed 27-yard kick from Spencer Lanning in the third. Then again, the Gamecocks had plenty of wiggle room considering the how defense bottled up Russell Wilson and the Wolfpack s offense all night. N.C. State managed just 133 yards, with Wilson who last year became the first freshman named first-team all-atlantic Coast Conference quarterback completing just 12 of 23 passes for 74 yards while facing steady pressure from the speedy South Carolina pass rush. He got no help from the Wolfpack s ground game, either, with Toney Baker s first-quarter fumble setting up Maddox s early TD run. Still, the Wolfpack had a chance for the go-ahead score, pushing to South Carolina s 32 with about 4 minutes left. Wilson evaded the rush and lofted the ball toward Jay Smith in the end zone despite the reserve receiver being in double coverage, but the ball slipped over both defenders and bounced off Smith s hands near the back of the end zone. That drive ended with Wilson s fourth-down incompletion, and Garcia soon found Brown behind two Wolfpack defenders to seal the win. Wilson set an ACC record with 272 consecutive passes without an interception. 19 2009 Game Recaps Game 2 #21 Georgia 41, South Carolina 37 September 12, 2009 Sanford Stadium Athens, Ga. 92,746 ATHENS, GA. (AP) After everything that happened over nearly four hours -- the kickoff return for a touchdown, the interception for a TD, the safety, the blocked extra point, the 24 penalties -- it all came down to one play, one make-or-break decision. Rennie Curran took a step forward, thinking he would have to make a tackle. Then he stopped, stuck out his left hand and batted down the final pass of a wild night. No. 21 Georgia had survived. Barely. Curran broke up Stephen Garcia s fourth-down pass from the 7-yard line with 22 seconds remaining, and the Bulldogs held off South Carolina The Bulldogs (1-1, 1-0 SEC) avoided their first 0-2 start since South Carolina (1-1, 0-1) was hurt by a blocked extra point after its final touchdown, which prevented the Gamecocks from going for a tying field goal at the end. Boykin set a school record with a 100-yard kickoff return and set up a score with an interception. South Carolina linebacker Eric Norwood returned an interception 35 yards for a TD. Spencer Lanning tied a Gamecocks record with five field goals, pulled off a fake punt but had that crucial extra point blocked. The Bulldogs took a safety when Ty Frix snapped the ball over the punter s head and through the end zone. Garcia completed 31 of 53 passes for 313 yards, with two TDs and an interception. Joe Cox, who heard reports during the week that he was suffering from a sore arm or shoulder and might not even start, threw for 201 yards and a pair of TDs, though he also gave up a score on the ill-advised throw to Norwood. This was a shootout right from the start. South Carolina raced to a 17-7 lead in the first quarter, but Georgia rallied for a edge at halftime. The Bulldogs looked to be pulling away as they took the second-half kickoff and drove for another score, Cox hitting Michael Moore with a 4-yard TD pass to make it But Lanning hit his fourth and fifth field goals, sandwiched around Frix s errant snap over Drew Butler s head to give the Gamecocks another two points. Then, South Carolina looked as though it had tied it up when Norwood reached up to grab Cox s pass, racing the other way for a touchdown that pulled the Gamecocks to with just under 13 minutes remaining. All that was needed was the extra point, a mere formality, right? Wrong. DeAngelo Tyson reached up to swat away Lanning s kick, keeping Georgia ahead. It was the only thing that went wrong for the South Carolina kicker, who connected on field goals of 21, 39, 22, 35 and 34 yards. When Georgia s Blair Walsh knocked through his second field goal, a 42-yarder with 6:20 remaining, South Carolina needed a touchdown to pull it out. Garcia led the Gamecocks down the field, converting three straight times on third down. But he couldn t complete the comeback. 20 2009 Game 3 South Carolina 38, Florida Atlantic 16 September 19, 2009 Williams-Brice Stadium Columbia, S.C. 72,017 COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) Brian Maddox scored three touchdowns and Jarvis Giles ran 11 times for 113 yards to help South Carolina to a win over Florida Atlantic on Saturday night. The Gamecocks (2-1) scored on three straight possessions in the second half to turn an uncomfortably close game at half into a rare blowout. While Giles averaged 10.3 yards a carry and got his first career touchdown, fellow freshman Kenny Miles looked just as impressive, running for 56 yards on five carries in one first quarter series before sitting out the rest of the game with a shoulder injury. Florida Atlantic quarterback Rusty Smith was 21-for-31 for 198 yards. Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier is 37-0 in his career against teams not currently in the Bowl Championship Series. South Carolina has just five days to get ready for No. 5 Mississippi. One thing Spurrier will likely address is kickoff coverage. The Gamecocks allowed an average of 26 yards on each return, a week after allowing 36 yards on kickoffs. The Owls (0-2) trailed just at halftime, but turned over the ball twice on their first three drives after halftime. Stephon Gilmore picked off Rusty Smith s pass, and Eric Norwood sacked Smith to force a fumble. The Gamecocks took advantage of the short field both times. Gilmore later recovered a fumble as South Carolina forced three turnovers in the second half and stopped Florida Atlantic on a fourth down at the Gamecocks 5. The game got out of hand after that. With more than 3 minutes to go, Spurrier put in his son Scotty. On his second play, the senior caught a 13-yard pass for his first career reception. South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia was 20-for-27 for 222 yards, throwing for one touchdown and running for another. The discovery of a running game meant the sophomore didn t have to match the 53 passes and 313 yards he had in a loss to No. 23 Georgia last week. Maddox gained just 23 yards on 10 carries and had just two catches for 8 yards, but managed three touchdowns. South Carolina receiver Tori Gurley had four catches for 100 yards. Moe Brown caught three passes for 20 yards, but had a 50-yard run on the Gamecocks first play. South Carolina took a 17-3 lead on Garcia s 15-yard run with 8:53 left in the first half, but the Owls scored twice before halftime. Smith s 3-yard touchdown pass to a wide open Jamari Grant with 16 seconds left in the second quarter made it just before halftime and raised hope Florida Atlantic might beat a BCS team for just the second time in the program s nine-year history. 21 2009 Game Recaps Game 4 South Carolina 16, #4 Ole Miss 10 September 24, 2009 Williams-Brice Stadium Columbia, S.C. 74,724 COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) Mississippi wasn t ready for the Top 5--or South Carolina s defense. Star passer Jevan Snead was hounded all game and the fourth-ranked Rebels never got in gear, losing to South Carolina Thursday night. South Carolina (3-1, 1-1 SEC) had been 1-31 all-time against Top 5 foes, but left Williams-Brice Stadium with the biggest win of coach Steve Spurrier s five seasons. Spencer Lanning kicked three field goals and fullback Patrick DiMarco a key 2-yard TD catch for the Gamecocks. Ole Miss (2-1, 0-1) had one last chance at a go-ahead TD that would ve extended its eight-game winning streak. But Snead was sacked by Cliff Matthews, then had a fourth-down pass knocked away by Darian Stewart. Snead missed six straight throws during one stretch and only once came through with a critical play. His 45-yard TD pass to Markeith Summers with under 10 minutes left in the game that cut it to South Carolina s defense had to come through after that because the offense, which controlled things for much of the first three quarters went three-and-out on its final four possessions. Snead s 11-yard pass to Pat Patterson brought Ole Miss to the Gamecock 32 with 2:55 to play. Then coach Houston Nutt tried to outfox South Carolina. A carry by Brandon Bolden out of the Wild Rebel package went for a yard. A double reverse to Dexter McCluster lost 4 yards. Matthews followed with his sack of Snead before Stewart preserved the win by batting down the final pass. Snead finished this game 7 of 21 for 107 yards. Right from the start, Snead and the Rebels looked tight. They had only four drives in the opening half, three that ended without a first down. Eric Norwood ended the Rebels first drive with his school-record 27th sack. Snead passed for just 30 yards as the Rebels were outgained by South Carolina in the first 30 minutes. Bolden appeared to get things going with a 59-yard touchdown run. A holding penalty, however, brought that back and the Rebels eventually settled for their only points of the half on Joshua Shene s 42-yard field goal. Mississippi came close to scoring just once more, but instead of another field goal, Nutt went with a fake. Holder Justin Sparks pass to Derrick Davis came up 2 yards shy of a first down. The Gamecocks had more plays and more yardage. They, too, though had trouble finding the end zone. Lanning converted a 20-yard field goal to put the Gamecocks ahead 6-3 at the break. 22 2009 Game 5 South Carolina 38, South Carolina St. 14 October 3, 2009 Williams-Brice Stadium Columbia, S.C. 77,066 COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) Stephen Garcia threw two touchdowns, rushed for another score and South Carolina matched its best start of Steve Spurrier s five seasons with a victory over South Carolina State on Saturday night. The Gamecocks improved to 4-1, tying their opening mark of But it took more time than Spurrier would ve liked to finally put away the Football Championship Subdivision opponent. South Carolina s head ball coach has groused about his team s stuck-inthe-mud offense for much of the season. And after a slow start against the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champion Bulldogs, Garcia and the Gamcocks finally got things going. Garcia s 1-yard TD right before halftime put South Carolina ahead In the second half, Garcia connected with Moe Brown on touchdowns of 40 and 9 yards to put things out of reach at Garcia finished 13 of 19 for 132 yards. Spurrier improved to 38-0 against opponents not in the six conferences with BCS bids. South Carolina State (3-1) fell to 0-5 against Football Bowl Subdivision. South Carolina linebacker Eric Norwood put on a show against his younger brother s Bulldogs with a blocked field goal and an interception. Erin Norwood is a sophomore defensive back at South Carolina State. Spurrier hopes the Gamecocks can carry this start further than they did two years ago. Back then, they reached No. 6 in the country as they opened 6-1. But they lost their final five games and didn t even make the postseason. Right before kickoff, Williams-Brice Stadium experienced a power outage that hampered ESPN Classic s planned broadcast and knocked out the video board midway through the second period. There wasn t much power displayed by either team in the opening half, either. South Carolina was outgained by its FCS opponent 159 yards to 149. The Gamecocks couldn t crack the end zone until Garcia s 1-yard run with 2:23 to go before halftime that made it South Carolina State responded with a nine-play, 75-yard drive that concluded with a milestone touchdown. Malcolm Long s 5-yard scoring run was the first time the FCS team had put up a touchdown in its five games against Football Bowl Subdivision opponents. The Bulldogs swarmed Long as if they had just earned another league title instead of simply cutting things to 10-7 at halftime. That was about all the celebrating South Carolina State would get to do. South Carolina struck for Kenny Miles 22-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter and the Bulldogs could not recover. The only drama at the end came when S.C. State broke through for a second touchdown, Long converting a 4th-and-goal from South Carolina s 1 with 4 seconds left. Game Recaps S.C. 23 2009 Game Recaps Game 6 #25 South Carolina 28, Kentucky 26 October 10, 2009 Williams-Brice Stadium Columbia, S.C. 68,278 COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) Stephen Garcia threw for three touchdowns and ran for another and No. 25 South Carolina stopped a potential tying two-point conversion in the fourth quarter to beat Kentucky on Saturday, keeping coach Steve Spurrier a perfect 17-0 against the Wildcats. The Gamecocks (5-1, 2-1 SEC) won their 10th straight over Kentucky (2-3, 0-3). Wildcats quarterback Mike Hartline left the game with a sprained left knee early in the third quarter after leading Kentucky to a halftime lead. Garcia had touchdown passes of 10, 28 and 22 yards to freshman Alshon Jeffery. Garcia added what proved to be the winning margin with his leap from the 1 with 8:22 remaining to give Carolina a lead. Kentucky had a chance to tie after Randall Cobb s 2-yard TD run with 4:34 left. But Will Fidler s pass was knocked down by defensive end Cliff Matthews. Facing third-and-4 moments later, Garcia gained 5 yards leaping over a Kentucky defender to keep South Carolina moving with 3:02 to go. Kentucky never got the ball back as South Carolina matched its best start in Spurrier s five seasons. South Carolina s defense, which came in third in the SEC, could not stop a Kentucky attack that had managed only 240 yards a game the past two weeks against the league s No. 1 and No. 2 defenses in Florida and Alabama. The Wildcats got nearly that much against the Gamecocks in the opening half with 213 yards built on scoring drives of 82, 59 and 54 yards. Things changed, though, when Hartline left the game. He had thrown a touchdown pass and was 9 of 14 for 139 yards. Kentucky, which had converted 6 of 11 third downs in the opening half, was only 2 of 8 over the final 30 minutes. The Wildcats had some untimely mistakes in this one. With Kentucky in sure field goal range in the third quarter, Cobb failed on a fake. Tight end T.C. Drake dropped a certain touchdown on the Wildcats next series. Kentucky s Derrick Locke picked up a first down on fourth-and-2 a drive later. But the play was called back because of a false start. South Carolina s Kenny Miles finished with 100 yards on 17 rushes. Jeffery had 138 yards on seven receptions. Hartline hit Gene McCaskill for a 31-yard completion to South Carolina s 11, then found Locke for a touchdown and a 10-7 lead. After the Gamecocks moved in front on Jeffery s second touchdown catch, Hartline connected on passes of 55 and 7 yards to Cobb to put the Wildcats ahead. 24 2009 Game 7 #2/3 Alabama 20, #22 South Carolina 6 October 17, 2009 Bryant-Denny Stadium Tuscaloosa, Ala. 92,012 TUSCALOOSA, ALA. (AP) Mark Ingram rushed for a career-high 246 yards and a game-clinching touchdown, powering No. 2 Alabama to a 20-6 victory over No. 22 South Carolina on Saturday night. Ingram s tackle-breaking, defender-dragging runs and a punishing defense helped the Crimson Tide (7-0, 4-0 SEC) overcome four turnovers--doubling their season total. It also helped `Bama avoid the down-tothe-wire scares No. 1 Florida and No. 3 Texas had--or an upset defeat like No. 4 Virginia Tech endured. Steve Spurrier s Gamecocks (5-2, 2-2) had never beaten a team ranked higher than No. 3 and were hoping for their second win over a top-five team this season. Ingram didn t let it happen. He was practically a one-man show on the decisive drive. He took the direct snap for five consecutive runs--including a 24-yarder and 22-yarder--and then took a pitch in from 4 yards out with 4:54 left. Ingram covered all 68 yards on the drive. The game s only other touchdown fittingly came from the a defense that sacked Stephen Garcia five times and kept him firing blanks into the end zone at the end of promising drives. Safety Mark Barron stepped in front of Garcia s first pass attempt in the middle of the field and returned it 77 yards for a touchdown. Garcia wound up 20 of 46 for 214 yards after completing just 4 of 18 passes in the first half. South Carolina managed just 64 yards rushing. Alabama s Greg McElroy also was shaky against the nation s No. 6 pass defense. His first pass--and two of his initial four--were picked off after he had gone 135 straight passes without an interception. He wound up completing half of his 20 attempts for just 92 yards. Ingram made up for it on his 24 rushes and also caught two passes for 23 yards. Leigh Tiffin kicked field goals of 25 and 35 yards for the Tide, which had 10 penalties for 113 yards. South Carolina couldn t get points off two drives into Alabama territory late in the third quarter. The Gamecocks marched just across midfield on 12 plays before having to punt. Then Clifton Geathers stripped the ball from McElroy to give them back the ball. But the Alabama defense held again and Spencer Lanning s 50-yard field goal attempt was short. The Gamecocks scored on field goals of 22 and 31 yards by Lanning in the final 3:14 of the first half but missed chances for more points. Garcia had hit freshman Alshon Jeffery on a 52-yarder and leading receiver Moe Brown on an 8-yarder down to the 5. Brown lay on the field for several minutes before being strapped to a backboard and carted off the field with a concussion. Garcia set up the second kick, made as time expired, with runs of 21 and 12 yards on consecutive plays. 25 2009 Game Recaps Game 8 #23 South Carolina 14, Vanderbilt 10 October 24, 2009 Williams-Brice Stadium Columbia, S.C. 75,264 COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) Stephen Garcia threw two touchdown passes and No. 23 South Carolina ended Vanderbilt s two-game series win streak - barely - with a victory Saturday night. The Gamecocks (6-2, 3-2 Southeastern Conference) played as flat as they did the past two years against Vanderbilt (2-6, 0-5). Only thanks to Garcia and his young receivers, this time it didn t cost them the win. Garcia connected with freshman Alshon Jeffery on a 43-yard TD pass with 12:51 remaining for the winning score. Earlier, freshman D.L. Moore caught a 35-yard touchdown from Garcia. The Commodores got the ball one last time with 4 minutes left and drove to South Carolina s 25. However, quarterback Larry Smith was called for intentional grounding on 3rd down, then did not get close to the necessary yardage on fourth-and-32. Ryan Fowler s 21-yard field goal in the third quarter put the Commodores ahead 10-7 and for a while, it looked like a mix of stellar defense and special teams play would keep them out front. South Carolina had only one first down on its first three possessions of the third quarter. Vanderbilt punter Brett Upson kept the Gamecocks pinned with boots of 57 yards and 64 yards. Two of his punts were downed at the Gamecock 1. But after South Carolina s go-ahead touchdown, Vanderbilt s struggling offense could not rebound. Garcia completed 22 of 33 passes for 312 yards. Freshman runner Kenny Miles had 102 yards rushing on 18 carries. The school honored its 1969 Atlantic Coast Conference champions and its 1984 Black Magic team that was the only one in history to win 10 games. If not for a couple of wins on official reviews, the uninspired Gamecocks might have left the field at halftime trailing instead of tied 7-7. Tailback Kenny Miles appeared to fumble on South Carolina s fourth snap with Vanderbilt s Patrick Benoist grabbing it deep in Gamecocks territory. But the officials in the replay booth said Miles was down before the ball got away and South Carolina s drive continued. The Gamecocks finally broke through on Garcia s touchdown pass to Moore, who juggled the ball and didn t look like he had full possession until his right foot stepped on the inbounds line. Another official review - and another call for the Gamecocks, who took a 7-0 lead. That didn t last long, however, as freshman Warren Norman went 99 yards for a touchdown on South Carolina s kickoff to tie things. There s no telling where Vanderbilt would ve been without Norman s run back. The team managed just 112 yards of offense in the opening half. Their best series came when they drove 65 yards to South Carolina s 8. But Fowler missed a 25-yard field goal try. 26 2009 Game 9 Tennessee 31, #21 South Carolina 13 October 31, 2009 Neyland Stadium Knoxville, Tenn. 96,623 KNOXVILLE, TENN. (AP) Decked out in black jerseys, Tennessee took three South Carolina fumbles and turned them into touchdowns as the Volunteers beat the No. 21 Gamecocks Saturday night. Jonathan Crompton threw two touchdowns, Montario Hardesty ran for two more and Rico Mc- Coy forced two fumbles as coach Lane Kiffin grabbed his first win over a ranked opponent. After warming up in their traditional orange home jerseys, the Vols (4-4, 2-3 Southeastern Conference) seemed to take the Gamecocks by surprise as they took the field in Halloween-inspired uniforms. South Carolina (6-3, 3-3) fumbled on its first two drives on a rainy night, having entered the game with only five for the season. Tennessee, hampered by turnovers early in the season, did not give the ball away for the first time this season. The Gamecocks began clicking on offense in the second half as the Vols sputtered. Stephen Garcia connected with Moe Brown on a 31-yard touchdown pass to cut the margin to with 2:05 left in the third quarter, but it was too little too late. South Carolina outgained Tennessee on offense 365 yards to 341 and had four more first downs. Garcia completed 25 of 50 for 300 yards and an interception. Justice Cunningham coughed up the first fumble on the third play of the game, and 42 seconds later Crompton hit Austin Johnson on a 38-yard touchdown toss. Crompton completed 12 of 24 for 142 yards. On the second play of the following drive, Kenny Miles lost the first fumble of his career, and Tennessee answered with a 14-yard run by Hardesty, who finished with 121 yards rushing. Even when they weren t fumbling, the Gamecocks couldn t find much offense in the first half. They first made it to Tennessee territory with 9:29 left in the second quarter but stalled at the Vols 47. An illegal block by D.J. Swearinger cost South Carolina a would-be 73-yard punt return for a touchdown by Stephon Gilmore. The Gamecocks drove 55 yards before halftime, but on third-and-3 at the Tennessee 25, Willie Bohannon dropped Miles for a 5-yard loss. Spencer Lanning kicked a career-long 47-yard field goal to cut the margin to 21-3 at the half. Tennessee s woes on special teams continued. With Daniel Lincoln sidelined by a quadriceps injury, Chad Cunningham took over field goal duties. Devin Taylor blocked Cunningham s first attempt, a 40-yarder in the first quarter. His second attempt, a 39-yarder with 4:23 left in the game, was good and drew a huge cheer from what was left of the Tennessee crowd. Up 14-0 early in the second quarter, Kiffin opted to go for it on fourth-and-goal at the 2-yard line rather than attempt a field goal. Crompton found Kevin Cooper, who stumbled into the corner of the end zone. 27 2009 Game Recaps Game 10 Arkansas 33, South Carolina 16 November 7, 2009 Reynolds Razorback Stadium Fayetteville, Ark. 68,865 FAYETTEVILLE, ARK. (AP) Ryan Mallett went 23 of 27 for 329 yards to lead Arkansas to a victory over South Carolina on Saturday. Mallett was 12 of 13 in the second half, and the Razorbacks scored 23 unanswered points to finish the game. Arkansas (5-4, 2-4 Southeastern Conference) needs only one more win to become bowl eligible. D.J. Williams caught seven passes for 137 yards for the Razorbacks, including a 69-yard reception near the end of the first half that set up an important field goal. Stephen Garcia passed for 327 yards with a touchdown and an interception for the Gamecocks (6-4, 3-4), who have lost three of four and are in danger of a third straight late-season fade. Mallett and Garcia entered the game ranked 1-2 in the SEC in passing. South Carolina scored on its first play of the second half when Garcia threw an 80-yard touchdown pass to Alshon Jeffery, but it was all downhill from there for the Gamecocks. First, they botched the extra point. Then, Arkansas took a lead on Mallett s 1-yard scoring run. Jerell Norton intercepted Garcia in the end zone on South Carolina s next possession, and Broderick Green put Arkansas ahead by eight with a 2-yard touchdown run. Less than 90 seconds later, the Razorbacks added a safety on a play that began at the South Carolina 32. A shotgun snap sailed past Garcia, and although the quarterback tried to fall on the ball near his own 5, it skipped into the end zone. South Carolina recovered, but the two points gave Arkansas a advantage. Green added a 3-yard touchdown run with 4:31 left in the fourth quarter. Williams, a tight end, caught a team-high 61 passes last season, but he had only 16 receptions this season entering Saturday. With the Razorbacks trailing 10-7 and 22 seconds remaining in the first half, Williams took a short pass, eluded a couple defenders and ran all the way to the South Carolina 7 for a 69-yard gain. Mallett nearly threw an interception on the next play, but Arkansas was able to tie it with a field goal on the half s final play. South Carolina is trying to avoid another difficult finish after starting 5-1. South Carolina was 7-3 before losing its final three games of last season, and dropped its final five games of 2007 to finish 6-6. The Gamecocks wasted an opportunity on their very first possession. On fourthand-1 from the Arkansas 6, they called two timeouts before Garcia finally ran for a first down. Moments later, South Carolina was ready to go for it again on fourth down from the 1, but a delay of game penalty forced the Gamecocks to settle for a field goal. Joe Adams put Arkansas ahead 7-3 with a touchdown on an 18-yard end-around. South Carolina took a 10-7 lead on Garcia s 1-yard touchdown run after the Gamecocks stopped a fake punt in Arkansas territory. 28 2009 Game 11 #1 Florida 24, South Carolina 14 November 14, 2009 Williams-Brice Stadium Columbia, S.C. 79,297 COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) Tim Tebow tied the SEC touchdown record and No. 1 Florida gained its first perfect league season in 13 years with a victory over South Carolina on Saturday. The Gators (10-0, 8-0) remained on track for a third national title in four years. They again called on their SEC-leading defense to save things against former coach Steve Spurrier, who looked like he d figured out a few cracks in Florida s front line. Down 17-14, South Carolina (6-5, 3-5) drove 48 yards to Florida s 22. But defensive lineman Justin Trattou intercepted Stephen Garcia and brought it back 53 yards. Tebow cashed in the touchdown four plays later, a 1-yard burst that was the 53rd of his SEC career to match LSU great Kevin Faulk. Ahead after Tebow s score, Florida s defense got after the Gamecocks. The Gators sacked Garcia four times in the fourth quarter. Joe Haden s interception with two minutes left sealed Florida s 20th straight victory - and fourth in a row over its former head ball coach. Tebow ended 14 of 25 for 199 passing, including a 68-yard touchdown throw to Riley Cooper. Florida s defense held South Carolina to 247 yards, the Gamecocks fewest in four games. Florida led a quick start scoring on their first three series. After Tebow s touchdown pass to Cooper, Caleb Sturgis had a 32-yard field goal and Emmanuel Moody broke two tackles during his 17-yard scoring run. That s usually more than enough for Florida s D, second in the country at just more than 10 points allowed a game. But Spurrier, back in full command of the offense, found a way to make Florida sweat. He called a fake punt on South Carolina s opening series, Spencer Lanning throwing a perfect pass to wide open D.J. Swearinger. An illegal shift penalty, though, negated the first down. The Gamecocks tied it at 7-all with a 14-play, 84-yard drive finished by Brian Maddox s 1-yard TD run. It was the junior s first score in eight games. Garcia went 5 of 5 on South Carolina s other first-half scoring drive, hitting Weslye Saunders with a 9-yard touchdown pass in the left corner of the end zone. Garcia gave a military salute to the South Carolina sidelines after that score, keeping with the theme of the day. The Gamecocks wore black camouflage jerseys with values such as Courage, Integrity, and Service on the back instead of names to honor veterans hurt defending the United States. The effort was sponsored by The Wounded Warrior Project and Under Armour. Garcia had seemingly put himself in line as one of South Carolina s alltime heroes when he sidestepped two Florida tacklers to pick up a first down on fourth-and-2. Two plays later, though, came Trattou s game-turning interception. 29 2009 Game Recaps Game 12 South Carolina 34, #15 Clemson 17 November 28, 2009 Williams-Brice Stadium Columbia, S.C. 80,574 COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier still has a few of those Heisman Trophy moves. Gamecocks captain Moe Brown and fellow senior Garrett Anderson chased an elusive Spurrier, the 1966 Heisman winner at Florida, with a water bucket and eventually doused their coach after beating rival No. 15 Clemson Saturday. Spurrier s rule is save such showers for championships. Even the head ball coach had to smile when Brown pointed out the Gamecocks (7-5) won the Palmetto State title. And it came mostly because South Carolina s defense slowed a Tigers attack that had averaged more than 40 points and 415 yards during its six-game win streak. The Tigers (8-4) had few answers for South Carolina s rested and raring-to-go defenders. Clemson star C.J. Spiller had his NCAA record-setting seventh career kickoff return touchdown to start the game. He managed only 18 yards on the ground after that. Stephen Garcia threw three touchdown passes as South Carolina put a temporary halt to Clemson s series dominance. Clemson had just 260 yards of offense. Spiller finished with 18 yards rushing and 19 receiving. After Spiller struck for his 88-yard kickoff return just 20 seconds in--it was his fourth such score this season--the orange-clad fans among the 80,574 in the stands had little reason to doubt it d be another day to celebrate. But the Tigers had only 138 yards through three quarters. There were interceptions, fumbles and penalties galore that helped South Carolina score 17 points in the opening half, more than it had in any of its last five games. Jamie Harper s fumble turned into a 1-yard touchdown run by Brian Maddox to tie things. Kyle Parker s first interception in three games followed on Clemson s next drive, with freshman DeVonte Holloman returning it 54 yards to the Tigers 11. Garcia connected with tight end Weslye Saunders for the go-ahead score from 9 yards out. Ricky Sapp had a roughing penalty on a punt to keep another Gamecocks drive going. That one ended with Spencer Lanning clanging a 47-yard field goal off the right upright. Garcia clinched things in the third quarter with a 14-yard touchdown throw to a wide-open Tori Gurley. Spiller fumbled on the Tigers first possession of the second half, and Clemson got just one first down its next three series. Hollomon s game-changing interception was the first of his career. Defensive back Stephon Gilmore, Holloman s teammate at South Pointe High last fall, was used successfully in a wildcat look that set up Maddox s tying touchdown. 30 2009 Game 13 Connecticut 20, South Carolina 7 January 2, 2010 Legion Field Birmingham, Ala. 45,254 BIRMINGHAM, ALA. (AP) Andre Dixon rushed for 126 yards and a touchdown and resilient Connecticut (8-5) ended a trying season with a 20-7 victory over the South Carolina Gamecocks (7-6) in the Papajohns.com Bowl on Saturday. Dixon was the Most Valuable Player and joined teammate Jordan Todman as 1,000-yard rushers, the first time two UConn backs have surpassed that mark in the same season. Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia completed just 16 of 38 passes for 129 yards while gaining 56 yards on 15 carries. He lost a fumble, was intercepted once and didn t get much help. An emotional Garcia called the Gamecocks performance very disappointing. He said they never got it going, and it shows on the scoreboard. UConn had a pristine performance, with zero penalties. Linebacker Lawrence Wilson called it the most complete game we ve played all year. The Gamecocks avoided their first shutout in three seasons on Brian Maddox s 2-yard touchdown run with 3:24 left. Their only other possession ending in UConn territory resulted in a botched field goal attempt. The Gamecocks effort was marred by dropped passes, a missed interception and costly penalties that kept a mostly garnet-and-black clad crowd subdued -- and steadily shrinking by the fourth quarter. Leading receiver Alshon Jeffery was held to three catches for 28 yards, all in the first half. Tailback Kenny Miles had just six carries for 24 yards. Dixon s 10-yard touchdown with 13:12 left effectively put the game away. Jesse Simpson had set the Huskies up at the Gamecocks 29-yard line by forcing Garcia to fumble, knocking it away from behind at the end of a run. A South Carolina team that pounded Clemson with 58 runs in a win to finish the regular season finished with 26 rushes for 76 yards. UConn jumped ahead Kashif Moore snagged the ball one-handed down the right sideline for a 37-yard touchdown catch from Zach Frazer in the first quarter. Dave Teggard then hit field goals of 33 and 44 yards. The first kick was set up when Garcia was stopped on a sneak on fourth-and-1 from South Carolina s 32. South Carolina didn t even manage its initial first down until midway through the second quarter, and that took Garcia converting a third-and-16. South Carolina s sloppy play continued into the second half. Running into the kicker and roughing the passer calls helped UConn keep its first drive alive for more than seven minutes, though it ended with a fumble. Then, cornerback Akeem Auguste dropped an easy interception with nothing between him and the end zone. Game Recaps South Carolina Connecticut Scoring Summary 1st 6:37 UC K. 31 Wounded Warrior Project Under Armour black and desert camouflage uniforms featuring the Wounded Warrior Project logo were developed to honor the sacrifices made by those who have served and those that continue to serve in our nation s Armed Forces. The custom-made jerseys were worn by South Carolina and Maryland against Florida and Virginia Tech, respectively, on November 14, The gameday jerseys, which included the warrior character traits of Duty, Honor, Courage, Commitment, Integrity, Country and Service in place of the players last names, proved extremely popular as a total of 227 jerseys were auctioned off between the two schools to raise funds for the Wounded Warrior Project. The University of South Carolina football program s participation in the Wounded Warrior Project helped the organization net over $140,000. This was one of the best, if not the best, program we have supported in my time at South Carolina, said Athletics Director Eric Hyman. It was one of the largest single-day fund raiser the Wounded Warrior Project has ever had. Not only did we provide the Wounded Warriors with some much-needed dollars, but also generated a tremendous amount of positive publicity for the organization. The online auction of the gameday jerseys worn by South Carolina football players netted approximately $80,000, with the highest bid going for Eric Norwood s number 40 at $3,715. In addition, a dozen footballs signed by head coaches Steve Spurrier and Urban Meyer were auctioned off, and a portion of the proceeds from the sale of custom fan gear pushed South Carolina s contribution to the Wounded Warriors to over $92,000. Combined with the contributions from Under Armour and Gear For Sports, over $275,000 was invested into the promotion of the two games. We are extremely thankful to Under Armour and both universities for their support of this special initiative, said Steven Nardizzi, executive director of the Wounded Warrior Project. The success of the auction and overwhelming interest in these specially created uniforms speaks volumes about the unique ways we can give back to the men and women who have served and sacrificed so much. Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) is an apolitical nonprofit organization whose mission is to honor and empower wounded warriors. WWP serves to raise awareness and enlist the public s aid for the needs of severely injured service men and women, to help severely injured service members aid and assist each other and to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet their needs. General Bradley May addressed the Gamecock football team on the importance of the Wounded Warrior Project and presented Coach Spurrier with a Certificate of Appreciation for the Gamecocks assistance in promoting the non-profit organization. 106 Media Guide
