2 2010 NOTEBOOK SNYDERWINE FIRST TEAM ALL-AMERICA Redshirt junior kicker Will Snyderwine received fi rst team All-America honors from the American Football Coaches Association. He became the 17th player in school history to earn fi rst team All-America honors and fi rst since Chris Port and Clarkston Hines in In 2010, Snyderwine made 21-of-24 fi eld goals and all 32 of his PAT attempts for 95 total points. He set school single-season records for fi eld goals, consecutive fi eld goals made (18) and fi eld goal percentage (.875). SNYDERWINE WALTER CAMP ALL-AMERICA Snyderwine picked up second team All-America recognition from the Walter Camp Foundation. He is the fi rst kicker in school history to be named an All-America. He also received honorable mention accolades from SI.com. CFN FRESHMAN ALL-AMERICA TEAMS Three players received honorable mention on the College Football News Freshman All-America team, including right tackle Perry Simmons, cornerback Ross Cockrell and linebacker Kelby Brown. Simmons started all 12 games and helped rank second in the ACC in passing offense (271.3) while increasing its rushing average by 46.5 yards per game from Cockrell started all 12 games and led the team with three interceptions. He became only the second freshman in school history to solely lead the squad in interceptions. Brown led the NCAA with 0.44 fumble recoveries per game as he set a freshman record for fumble recoveries (4). Despite playing in only nine games with seven starts, his 63 tackles rank eighth most by a freshman in school history. FOUR RECEIVE ALL-ACC HONORS Members of the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association voted four players for All-ACC recognition. Snyderwine and sophomore wide receiver Conner Vernon were selected to the second team while redshirt senior linebacker Abraham Kromah and junior tight end Cooper Helfet received honorable mention. Snyderwine was named to the second team for the second straight season after leading the ACC with 1.75 fi eld goals per game and ranking fourth with an.875 fi eld goal percentage. Vernon picked up his fi rst career all-conference award. has had a wide receiver on the fi rst or second team in four straight seasons. In 2010, Vernon led the ACC with 6.08 receptions per game and was third with 81.1 receiving yards per game. Kromah had a fi ne fi nal season with 10.8 tackles per game to rank second in the ACC. His 129 total tackles stand as the 20th-most in school history and the 56th 100-tackle season by a player. Helfet fi nished the year with 34 grabs for 380 yards and two touchdowns. In the last fi ve games, he became one of sophomore quarterback Sean Renfree s top targets, catching 28 passes for 339 yards and one touchdown. 68 DUKE LANDS 13 ON ACADEMIC ALL-ACC TEAM Led by All-America placekicker Will Snyderwine, landed a league-high 13 selections on the 2010 Academic All-ACC Football team. Snyderwine was one of six repeat picks from, joining Lee Butler, Matt Daniels, Kyle Hill, Brian Moore and Chris Rwabukamba. Also representing the Blue Devils were Kelby Brown, Ross Cockrell, Dave Harding, Cooper Helfet, Sean Renfree, Perry Simmons and Donovan Varner. MORGAN NAMED TO GOOD WORKS TEAM Senior center Bryan Morgan was one of 11 FBS players named to the 2010 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. In order to meet the criteria set forth by Allstate and AFCA, each player must be actively involved and committed to working with a charitable organization, service group or community service while maintaining good academic standing. Morgan joined former Blue Devils Re quan Boyette (2007) and Zaid Abdul-Aleem (1994) as players who have been named to the Good Works Team. CAPTAINS s three permanent 2010 captains were Abraham Kromah, Bryan Morgan and Chris Rwabukamba. DUKE HONORS Redshirt sophomore quarterback Sean Renfree received the Carmen Falcone Most Valuable Player Award at s annual football banquet. Other honorees included Matt Daniels (Outstanding DB), Patrick Egboh (Outstanding DL), Kyle Hill (Iron Devil Award), Abraham Kromah (Captain Award & Outstanding LB), Bryan Morgan (Captain Award, Ace Parker Award & Outstanding OL), Chris Rwabukamba (Captain Award & Micah Harris Trinity Teammate Award), Desmond Scott (Outstanding Offensive Back), Perry Simmons (Mike Suglia Award), Will Snyderwine (Outstanding Special Teams Player) and Conner Vernon (Outstanding WR). DUKE SETS ATTENDANCE MARKS set a school record for the highest total attendance in a season with 201,248 total in seven games. It was just the second time in school history the Blue Devils have tallied over 200,000 fans in one season, breaking the previous record of 201,091 in The average attendance for the season was 28,750 the largest average since 1994 when the average attendance was 30,845. The Blue Devils reached capacity in Wallace Wade Stadium in each of the fi rst two home games with crowds of 33,941 (Elon) and 39,042 (Alabama). It was the fi rst time since 2001 reached capacity in Wallace Wade. The Alabama crowd was the largest since Nov. 19, 1994 when 40,103 fans showed up for the North Carolina game. HIGH SCORING GAMES This season, was involved in two of the three highest scoring conference games in ACC history. The Blue Devils win over Virginia ranks as the second highest scoring league contest while earlier in the year, lost to Wake Forest, 54-48, in the third-highest scoring conference game. The 55 points scored by the Blue Devils against Virginia marked the most by a team since 1990 when scored 57 at home against Wake Forest (57-20). It was the fi rst time since 1994 that the Blue Devils had 50 or more points in a game. has scored 50 or more points in a game 28 times in school history, including 13 games at home. In the last 55 years, there have only been six games where has tallied 50 or more points. DUKE OFFENSE BEST SINCE 1989 In 2010, averaged yards per game to rank seventh in the ACC. The yards per game is the highest by a Blue Devil squad since 1989 when averaged yards per contest. It ranks as the seventh-highest total since The Blue Devils posted 400 or more yards in fi ve games on the season with a season-high 542 yards against Elon. s passing yards per game marked the second-highest since Only the 2009 average of yards per game was higher in the last 17 seasons. It is the eighth-highest average in school history as the Blue Devils passed for over 300 yards in fi ve contests. The Blue Devils also averaged rushing yards per game, which was 46.5 more per contest than in 2009 and the most since 2005 when they averaged yards per game. FOURTH TO REACH 3,000 Renfree became just the fourth quarterback in school history to throw for over 3,000 yards in a single season, fi nishing with 3,131 yards in 12 games. The only other quarterbacks who have accomplished the feat are Anthony Dilweg in 1988, Thaddeus Lewis in 2009 and Ben Bennett in both 1982 and With 3,131 passing yards on the season, Renfree s total ranks third on s single season list. The 3,131 yards was the second-most by a quarterback in his fi rst season as a starter, trailing only Dilweg s total of 3,824 in Only six QBs have thrown for over 2,000 yards in their fi rst season as a starter. Renfree averaged yards per game to rank third in the ACC and 21st nationally. He had fi ve games with 300 or more yards to rank second in the league. Renfree fi nished the year ranked in the top 10 in several of s single-season passing categories. His 285 completions rank third while his 464 attempts are also third most. His completion percentage of.614 is the fi fth-highest.

3 CONNETTE S RECORD SETTING SEASON Freshman quarterback Brandon Connette recorded a rushing touchdown in seven of the 12 games this season and led the team with eight rushing touchdowns. Connette s eight rushing touchdowns rank as the second-most by a quarterback in school history and were a record for a freshmen. Against Virginia, Connette had two rushing touchdowns and a two-point conversion to set a school single-game freshman record with 14 points. SCOTT MOST YARDS SINCE 2003 The 530 rushing yards for sophomore Desmond Scott were the most by a player since Chris Douglas tallied 1,138 yards on 236 carries his senior year in In addition, Scott became just the 15th running back in school history to lead the team in rushing in backto-back seasons. RECEIVER DUO PILING UP STATS Wide receivers Donovan Varner and Conner Vernon combined for 133 catches in 2010 which marks the second-most receptions by two teammates in school history. Vernon is the only player in school history to catch 40 or more passes as a freshman and sophomore. Varner became just the third player with 60 or more in two seasons, joining Roger Boone and Clarkston Hines. Both Varner and Vernon recorded over 700 receiving yards, marking just the fi fth time in school history two or more players have topped the 700-yard mark in the same year. It is the second straight season both Varner and Vernon topped the 700-yard total. BROWN LEADS NCAA IN FUMBLE RECOVERIES Despite playing in only nine games, Kelby Brown led the NCAA with 0.44 fumble recoveries per game as a true freshman. He was one of only six players in the nation with four or more fumble recoveries this season. The four fumble recoveries for Brown were a freshman record, breaking the previous mark of three held by Fonda Williams in Brown s four fumble recoveries were the most by a Blue Devil since 2002 when Terrell Smith recovered four fumbles. DANIELS & TAKEAWAYS Junior safety Matt Daniels caused three fumbles for the second straight season to rank tied for second in the ACC. The three caused fumbles ranks tied for 10th most in a single-season in history. CAMPBELL S LONG RETURN The 95-yard fumble return for a touchdown by redshirt freshman August Campbell against Boston College was the longest in school history, breaking a 54-year old record. The previous long was 77 yards by Ed Rushton against Pittsburgh in Campbell s touchdown was the 13th fumble return for a score in school history and just the third of longer than 50 yards. COCKRELL LEADS TEAM IN INTERCEPTIONS Redshirt freshman cornerback Ross Cockrell led the team with three interceptions this season to become just the second freshman in school history to lead the team in interceptions by himself. The only player to accomplish the feat was Wyatt Smith, who had three interceptions in Cockrell recorded two interceptions against Virginia, becoming the fi rst player with two interceptions in a game since Leon Wright returned two interceptions for touchdowns in a win at Army last season. OVER 100 TACKLES FOR KROMAH With 129 tackles, redshirt senior linebacker Abraham Kromah posted the 56th 100-stop campaign in school history. A linebacker has led the team in tackles in each of the past seven seasons. Kromah had eight games with 10 or more tackles, including a career-high 20 against North Carolina. He also posted 15 tackles at Maryland and 13 against both Army and Georgia Tech. Kromah led the Blue Devils with 9.5 tackles for loss on the season. He recorded at least one stop behind the line of scrimmage in nine of the last 10 games. BROWN MADE IMMEDIATE IMPACT Rookie linebacker Kelby Brown played in nine games as a true freshman with seven starts. He ranked third on the team with 63 tackles while adding 5.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, fi ve quarterback hurries and four fumble recoveries. His 63 tackles rank eighth most by a freshman in school history while he was one tackle for loss shy of the top 10. Brown had two games with 10 or more tackles, becoming the fi rst true freshman since Michael Tauiliili in 2005 to post 10 or more tackles in a game. SEASON FIELD GOAL RECORDS With 21 fi eld goals this season, Will Snyderwine broke his own school record for made fi eld goals in a season. He passed last year s total of 17 with three fi eld goals against Boston College. His perentage of.875 was also a school single-season record. With 32 PATs this season, Snyderwine fi nished tied for sixth in school history for one year. He was 32-of-32 on the year and ranks 10th all-time at with 56 made PAT. SNYDERWINE AMONG FIELD GOAL LEADERS Snyderwine s 1.75 fi eld goals per game led the ACC and ranked seventh in the NCAA on the season. Snyderwine was fi fth in the conference and 13th nationally with a fi eld goal percentage of.875 (21-of-24). SNYDERWINE & SCORING RECORDS Snyderwine fi nished with 95 points this season to lead the team and rank fi fth in the ACC. His 95 points marked the second-highest total in a single season in school history behind Clarkston Hines (104 in 1989).
