RICHMOND - THE SERIES - Saturday's battle will be the 89th matchup between VMI and Richmond on the gridiron, with the Spiders leading the all-time series The series dates back to 1893, which was just VMI s third year fielding a team, but one of the better games between the teams came just four years ago. On Sept. 26, 2009, the Keydets faced then-#1 Richmond in a road matchup. The Keydets forced three turnovers and were within 10 points in the final quarter, but UR was able to run out the clock and preserve a narrow win. IT HAPPENED ON AUGUST 31 - VMI FOOTBALL - Dates of VMI football games are available going back to the 1950 season, and since then, the Keydets have played just three games in August, going 1-2 with a win on August 31, On that day, VMI beat Charleston Southern in N. Charleston, S.C., WORLD HISTORY - On August 31, 1803, U.S. Army Captain Meriweather Lewis left Pittsburgh, Pa. and headed for Louisville, Ky., where he would rendevous with William Clark to begin the Lewis and Clark expedition to the west. LUCAS NAMED PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE - Offensive lineman Will Lucas was named to the Big South s Preseason All-Conference Team, as announced by the league at its Head Coach Sparky Woods Sparky Woods (Carson-Newman '76), a veteran coach in the college ranks with over 30 years of experience, is in his sixth season in Lexington marks the fourth year of Woods pro-style offense following two years of the triple option. Woods, 59, was named the 30th head football coach in the Institute's 118-year history on February 12, That marked his return to the FCS (I-AA) ranks, where he produced a successful run as head coach of Appalachian State for five seasons, from 1984 through Woods guided the Mountaineers to a mark and two Southern Conference titles (1986, 1987) and two I-AA playoff appearances. Over the two-year span in '86-'87, Appalachian State posted a perfect 13-0 conference mark. The Southern Conference tabbed Woods as Coach of the Year for three consecutive years ( ) and he was named Kodak Region II Coach of the Year in As a head coach overall, Woods holds a mark. Woods was also head coach at South Carolina from , and later served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Memphis ( ), Virginia ( ), and Mississippi State. Presbyterian ROBBINS ADDED TO STAFF - Head Coach Sparky Woods added a new coach to his staff this past spring, as Brad Robbins joined the Keydet ranks. Robbins, a 2010 graduate of UVA-Wise, will serve as the cornerbacks coach one year after leaving Virginia, where he had spent the past two seasons as a defensive assistant. KEYDETS LOOKING TO GO OUT ON A HIGH NOTE will be VMI s final year in the Big South Conference, as the Keydets will leave the league for a return to the Southern Conference in time for the academic year. KORDENBROCK THROWS THREE SCORES IN FINAL SCRIMMAGE - VMI senior quarterback Eric Kordenbrock threw three touchdown passes two to sophomore receiver Sam Patterson to highlight VMI s second and final scrimmage of preseason camp August 22 at Foster Stadium. The 82-play workout was delayed 33 minutes because of lightning in the area, but the layout didn t affect Kordenbrock as he immediately fired a 31-yard strike to Patterson when the scrimmage resumed. Kordenbrock later teamed up with Patterson for scoring strikes of 12 and 29 yards before connecting with redshirt junior Doug Burton for a 35-yard touchdown pass near the end of the scrimmage. Kordenbrock on the day completed 8 of 14 passes for 131 yards and three touchdowns including four aerials to Patterson who led the receiving corps with 79 yards. The ground game was bolstered by junior running back Jabari Turner who led all rushers with 85 yards on 14 carries including a scrimmage-long 37-yard dash. Junior Deon Watts, recently moved back to running back after a stint at wide receiver, gained 78 yards on 11 carries and turned in a 28-yard carry. 5 Richmond Defeats VMI, 47-6 The Richmond Spiders opened the game by returning the opening kick for a touchdown, and went on to outgain the VMI Keydets in total yards en route to a 47-6 victory Saturday, Sept. 15 in Lexington, Va. Last Meeting with Richmond After Justin Grant brought the opening kick back 90 yards for a Richmond (2-1) touchdown, the Keydets (1-2) got back within four, 10-6, early in the second quarter on a one-yard run by Jabari Turner, just Turner's second career rushing touchdown. The Spiders would go on to score the next 37 points, including 28 in the third quarter, to account for the final margin. The Keydets were undone by three turnovers, including two interceptions in the second half, one of which was returned for a touchdown. The Spiders were led by Ben Edwards, who had 11 catches for 122 yards, and VMI saw linebacker Ty Garvin (12) and safety Adam Morgan (10) notch career-highs in tackles. The game got underway with a bang, as UR's Grant brought the kickoff back 90 yards for an opening touchdown. It was the fastest TD in a VMI football game since Sept. 20, 2008, a 74-yard touchdown pass on the first play from scrimmage. Leading 7-0, Richmond forced a VMI three and out, but Edwards fumbled the David Eberhardt kick and Patrick Sexton fell on the loose ball, giving the Keydets quality field position inside Spider territory. The Keydets could not take advantage, however, and after another Eberhardt punt, UR drove 91 yards in 16 plays for a Remington Hinshaw field goal. The 20-yard kick put the visitors up, 10-0, with 4:48 left in the first quarter. The Keydets took over with 1:42 left in the opening period and would get on the board early in the second. A 10-play, 62-yard drive that saw either Eric Kordenbrock or Turner touch the ball on every play ended with Turner's one-yard plunge, making it a 10-6 contest after a missed extra point. From there, the teams would trade relatively unproductive possessions for the remainder of the half. Richmond had two possessions inside the VMI 20, but had to settle for just one field goal until late, when UR quarterback John Laub orchestrated a two-minute drill that ended with a 37-yard Hinshaw kick, giving the visitors a 16-6 halftime lead. The Keydets took the ball first in the second half, but after picking up one first down, Kordenbrock was intercepted by UR's Cooper Taylor, giving the visitors possession at the VMI 41. Seven plays later, Laub connected with Kevin Finney for a four-yard touchdown pass, pushing the margin to The Spiders got the ball back after a Keydet punt and scored once more, as Laub had a hand in all 10 plays of a 10-play, 80-yard drive that ended with a strong 14-yard quarterback draw. Laub was met by a Keydet defender at the two-yard line, but was able to spring over the tackler for a touchdown and a 30-6 UR lead. UR's defense forced another Eberhardt punt and took possession once again at the 50-yard line with 2:32 left in the period. Jovan Smith took the handoff on the first play and ran around right tackle, reaching the sideline and getting through the Keydet defense for a touchdown and a 37-6 Richmond advantage. The visitors would cap their third quarter scoring when Taylor intercepted Kordenbrock for the second time and returned the pick for a 35-yard touchdown, making it a 44-6 contest. Richmond controlled the clock in the fourth quarter, running the ball 15 times and eating up 11:06. The only fourth quarter scoring came off the foot of Hinshaw, as he hit a 22-yard field goal with 7:50 to go to account for the final margin, Richmond concluded the day with a edge in plays run, as well as the total yard advantage.
