Participation: DIOCESE OF CLEVELAND CYO GRADES 3-5 POINTS OF EMPHASIS A player on a CYO team may not participate on any other basketball team during the CYO season. For purposes of defining eligibility, a player may not be on another team from the published CYO roster due date to the completion of the team s final game. Participation is now modifiable due to accumulation of personal fouls in the first half. Example: When player #4 receives their third personal foul in their first segment of the game, the coach may now enter a substitute for #4. However, the player who substitutes in does not receive credit for their participation segment. They must still play the mandatory minimum participation segments as stated in the rules. Players may also be removed from the game during their segment, at the discretion of the game official, due to an injury or technical foul. All players are to meet the participation requirements contained in the division specific rules. At no time is free substitution permitted in the first half. Each player must sit out at least one segment in each half if a team has six or more players. During the second half of the game, once ALL players on a specific team have fulfilled the minimum participation requirement, that team will be permitted to make free substitutions for the remainder of the game and all extra periods. At no time is free substitution permitted in the first half. Guest Player: Guest Player Rule: If a team has less than 7 athletes at a game, a guest player may be moved from the member s other CYO basketball teams to fill the positions at the start of a game. Please see the rules for the restrictions. Once an individual is a guest player twice, they may not be invited by any other team for the remainder of the season by any other team for the remainder of the season. Guest players cannot be used for sanctioned events or CYO championship competitions. 15 Point Rule: The defense must set-up below the half-court division line in 5 th Grade and the 3 point Arc extending the width of the court in 4 th and 3 rd Grade. Allow the offense to progress the ball beyond the half-court division line/3 point Arc and the dribbler must establish front court status before pressure on the ball is permissible. Front court status is defined as that point when both feet and the ball of the player with the ball have made contact with the floor in the front court. The defense cannot position any players along the midcourt division line so as to impede or challenge the offense from crossing over the division line. Once the offense initially crosses the ball below half-court division line/3 point Arc, the defense is not restricted for the remainder of the possession from playing player to player or zone defense. Half Court pressing and trapping is strictly prohibited. The fifteen (15) point rule cannot be waived for sanctioned events. Once the participation requirements have been fulfilled, the clock will not stop for whistles or free throws during the fourth quarter when a team has a fifteen (15) point lead. When this rule is in effect, the clock will only stop for team timeouts and instances when specifically directed 5

by the game officials. Once the lead falls below fifteen (15) points, the clock will stop according to rules of the specific grade level. Sanctioned Events: No team or player is permitted to participate in more than the following number of sanctioned event tournaments, carnivals and competitions in a season. o 5 th, 4 th & 3 rd Grade Three (3) Inclement Weather: Inclement weather may deter games from being played as scheduled. The safety of our players, coaches and their families are our primary concern when games are canceled due to inclement weather. Announcements related to the status of competitions will be posted on the main page of the schedule website, telephone announcement lines, Twitter, Instagram (@CYOSportsDOC) and media as needed. Player to Player Defense: Trapping, double or triple teaming of a player outside of the paint is prohibited. Help side defense is permitted. If an offensive player beats his/her defender, a teammate may move into position to help until the original defender recovers. Once the defender recovers, the help player must drop back to his/her player. Teams are not permitted to play any type of zone defenses. Switching, helping out or picking up a loose player on a breakaway, when there is a clear threat to score is good player-to-player defense and is allowed. Players must be within a reasonable distance of their player at all times. Free Throw Lane: In Grades 3, 4 and 5 a 12 foot free throw line will be used. The shooter must remain behind the line until the ball comes in contact with the rim. The shooting team (in t below) will have 3 players along the lane. The defensive team (in circle below) will have 4 players along the lane. Please note that all of the players are above the block. On the shot, the players along the lane can enter the lane upon the release of the ball by the shooter. 6

The shooter and the other players outside the lane cannot enter the lane until the ball hits the rim. For all 3 rd Grade Divisions, the free thrower may cross the free throw line with no penalty after the release; in 4 th grade, the free thrower cannot cross the free throw line after the release. Full Court Pressure 3rd Grade: Cannot press at any time throughout the game. 4 th Grade: May press in the last 3.5 minutes of the 4 th quarter and overtimes. o Normal defense must be positioned below the 3-point arc, extended the width of the court, before pressure on the ball is permitted. o Once the offense initially crosses the ball below the 3 point arc extended, the defense is not restricted for the remainder of the possession. 7

o Offensive players cannot use the area between mid-court and three point line extended as a haven to stall. Officials will count to 5 and if no attempt by the player with the ball to start the play by advancing the ball, the official will instruct the defense to Play ball. o When there is a 15 point lead, the winning team is prohibited from playing defense above the three point arc extended even if the ball is advanced below. 5 th Grade: A full-court press is not permitted in the first, second, third and the first 3.5 minutes of the fourth quarter on any dead ball inbounds pass in the backcourt. If the team is trailing by 15 points, they may use a full court press at any time. GRADES 3-5 CONFERENCING Teams in the 3 rd, 4 th, and 5 th grade divisions will be placed into conferences for scheduling based upon their geographic location. Team strength will not be considered. Reasonable efforts will be made by CYO administration to limit the need for teams from the same CYO member to play each other during the regular season. This effort may result in teams traveling further distances to play games. Regular season standings will not be kept and playoffs will not be held. Members may sponsor sanctioned events for these levels, provided that team strength and record are not utilized for placement or grouping for the games in the division of play. 8

CYO COACHES: THIRD AND FOURTH GRADE CYO BASKETBALL The CYO Official s Academy trains high school students to officiate third and fourth grade basketball games. Our academy was founded by Nick Crème, who is renown as a trainer of OHSAA and CYO Officials. Nick started the CYO Officials Academy twenty years ago and has trained hundreds of CYO Officials who have gone on to officiate at the highest levels of NCAA basketball and has a former academy official among the ranks of the NBA Officials. Nick has presented the CYO Official s Academy at the University of Notre Dame national Play Like A Champion Today Coaches Leadership Conference for use around the country. What does it mean if my team is in a game with CYO Academy Officials? Coaches behavior with Academy Officials is expected to be of the same high standards as at all CYO contests. Our Academy Officials are high school students, who are trained and supervised throughout the season. We ask that you do the following at every game: Greet your Academy Official in a friendly manner and thank them for serving CYO. Remember: 3 rd and 4 th graders don t know most basketball rules and violate the rules many times in a game. If officials called every violation, it would be no fun and children would not learn how to play. Officials will call violations based on their training. Judgment is required, and they are trained to know the rules and to make informed judgments. If you do have an issue with the quality of a CYO Academy Official, go to the CYO website and report it on the contact line link Do Not do these things as a CYO Coach at a game with CYO Academy Officials Do not yell at the officials EVER!!! Players Play; Coaches Teach; Officials Officiate; and Parents Support. It is not your role to officiate. Many CYO coaches do not know the basketball rules for their level. Focus on your responsibilities: know the rules; teach your kids skills & rules, and see games as learning experiences for players, coaches, and officials. CYO Coaches are responsible for the behavior of your players, parents and fans. If you demonstrate body language and spoken language that communicates anger and disrespect toward the academy officials, you are encouraging others to do the same. Aggressively challenge a CYO Academy Official. Not only does it violate the Christian role of being a CYO Coach, it is an adult acting in an abusive manner toward a high school student. Over 12,000 children play CYO games in over 90 gyms every weekend. There is a shortage of officials in youth basketball because of abusive behavior by coaches and parents. Our CYO Officials Academy develops our own officials who see CYO as a ministry that serves children to have fun, learn skills, and grow closer to God through CYO sports. Thank you for doing your part to make that happen. Have a great season living and modeling the mission and values of CYO. 9

FAQ S ABOUT SANCTIONED EVENTS Sanctioned Events are tournaments or competitions hosted by CYO members to provide additional opportunities for competition and to raise funds for their programs. Refer to information on the CYO website: Sanctioned Events tab. 1. When can I register for a sanctioned event? Whenever the event is listed on the CYO website. 2. Is it okay to register my team for a tournament under my assistant coach s name, since I will be out of town for most of the games? No, to register for a tournament, the official CYO Sports Pilot roster needs to be provided, which lists the head coach s name. However, an assistant coach can certainly be in charge at the games. 3. May I write a personal check for a Sanctioned Event entry? No - entry fees must be paid with an official check from the partner s account. 4. The Sanctioned Event Director asked me to provide an official CYO roster. Can I use an excel spreadsheet that lists all the athletes from my team? No - only the official CYO Sports Pilot Team Eligibility Roster that your Athletic Director registered with CYO can be submitted. Your Athletic Director should provide each coach with a copy of their roster at the beginning of the season. 5. My parish has three 6 th grade teams. Can we combine players from each team to enter a Sanctioned Event? No - athletes may only play and be rostered on one CYO team. 6. Can my team enter a community sponsored event if we use our nickname rather than the parish name? No - teams are eligible to participate in CYO sanctioned events only. Bylaw 4-3-1F 7. In how many sanctioned tournaments can my team play? Generally it is [4] for grades 6-8 [3] for grades 3-5. Please refer to CYO sport specific rules for clarification. 8. How many Guest Players may I use during Sanctioned Event Tournaments? ZERO! The Guest Player Ruler cannot be used in sanctioned events. Bylaw 5-3-2C7 9. If an athlete or coach is ejected from a sanctioned event, do they sit out the next scheduled CYO game or the next sanctioned event game? The athlete(s) or coach must sit out the next scheduled game whether it is a sanctioned event game or a CYO game. 10. The event director informed me my team s game starts at 8:15 pm. I thought we couldn t play after 8 pm. What should I do? Contact the Event Director and your Athletic Director immediately. Inform mhuber@ccdocle.org immediately. Please refer to Bylaw and sports specific rules for clarification/exception. 11. Most of our sanctioned event games were postponed due to bad weather. Can a sanctioned event be extended after the CYO season closes? No, events need to be concluded by the published CYO end of the season date for that sport. 12. Does CYO supply scoresheets for Sanctioned Events? No, unfortunately due to the high cost of printing, CYO is not able to provide Sanctioned Events with score sheets. It is recommended that sponsors buy a scorebook, along with other tournament supplies through Dick s, one of our partners. CYO inspires young people to know God, to love God, and to serve God through athletics. 10

5 WAYS COACHES OVERCOMPLICATE THINGS Posted by Coach Dave Stricklin As coaches, we often "blame" our players for the need to simplify everything but in reality is often us that make things more complicated than necessary. I think there are five reasons for this even though we don't always do these things intentionally. 1. We worry about things that will never happen. I'm all for being prepared; in fact I'm a big fan of being over prepared. However, my team does not practice three different jump ball plays and four different offenses to run against a triangle and two defense just in case we ever go into double overtime and see a junk defense! Instead, we concentrate on using the 80/20 rule - 80% of our practices are focused on the 20% of things that take place every game. (Sometimes it's more like 90/10 because we want to be very good at the things that happen most often.) Conversely 20% of our practices are focused on the other 80% of things that don't happen as frequently. 2. We have a strong desire to impress others. Most of us will say that we don't, but many coaches, especially younger ones, want to impress their peers, their players, their players' parents and their fans with their coaching ability. They mistakenly think that will happen if they run several complicated and intricate offenses. If that happens to be you keep in mind that Vince Lombardi's Packers ran only five plays and John Wooden's famous UCLA teams had only three offenses and he never used all three in the same season. If you want to be as impressive as Lombardi or Wooden don't overcomplicate things and instead create better leaders, help players improve and execute, and win more games! 3. We don't consider basketball IQ. Even though we talk about it all the time some coaches forget that their own basketball IQ and their ability to grasp and process detailed concepts is much greater than that of their players. Remember, it's not what a coach knows that is most important but rather what the players know and can execute. Look at it this way - the majority of students are average. A few will get mostly A's and B's and a few will get mostly' D's and F's but the vast majority are average in academic knowledge and/or execution. What makes you think your team would be any different? A few of your players will understand everything; a few will understand nothing, and the rest will be average. 4. We mentally get bored. Earlier I said that many younger coaches want to impress everyone but older coaches have their stumbling blocks too. Many eventually become mentally bored and so start looking for other challenges and other ways to stimulate their thinking. These coaches often begin studying other coaches and their systems and take detailed notes on every book, video, drill, and diagram they can get their hands on during the off season. When practice starts in the fall they are still excited about what they've learned and try to put in everything whether they completely understand how to teach it or not. Before long the players' heads are spinning and the same coaches are pulling their hair out. 11

5. We never throw anything away. Have you ever laughed at your parents or grandparents for never throwing anything away? Of course you have! Well coaches are the exact same way! A coach will put in a quick hitter for a particular game that involves using four post players and will win a game with it. Then every year after that he will put in the same quick hitter and will practice it regularly even if he doesn't have a single post player on his roster. Don't laugh because it happens all the time! Throw old drills, offenses, and defenses away or at least put them in storage. Your team doesn't need to have 10 offenses, 20 out of bounds plays, and 40 quick hitters - especially since your team is not going to learn/remember/use most of them. Before you blame your team for overcomplicating your program take a good look at yourself and see if any of these four things apply to you. It might not completely solve the problem but will certainly be a good start. LINK TO OTHER GREAT ARTICLES: CYO inspires young people to know God, to love God, and to serve God through athletics. 12
