Defensive Trends Duke has made a name for itself with annual excellence on defense. Here are some of the trends that separate Duke from many other programs on the defensive front. Six Duke players Tommy Amaker (1987), Billy King (1988), Grant Hill (1993), Steve Wojciechowski(1998), Shane Battier (1999, 2000 and 2001) and Shelden Williams (2005) have won the National Defensive Player of the Year award. 5 Quartet of Captains Senior leadership should be plentiful for the Blue Devils in Sean Dockery, Lee Melchionni, J.J. Redick and Shelden Williams have each been named captains, marking the first time in school history Duke has had four captains in a season. Dockery, Redick and Williams were named team captains over the summer, while Melchionni was awarded captain status after the first week of practice. Melchionni s father, Gary, served as a team captain at Duke in 1972 and The foursome of Duke captains has combined played a total of 8,669 minutes in 228 games over the past three seasons. Covering Redick Guard J.J. Redick is back for his senior season and looking to become the second Duke player and only the eighth overall in college basketball history to repeat as National Player of the Year. Last season, Redick averaged an ACC-best 21.8 points per game while winning the Rupp Award as well as claiming ACC Player of the Year, ACC Tournament MVP and first team All-America accolades. Redick is the NCAA s all-time leader in free throw percentage (.938) and ranks 15th on the school scoring charts with 1,805 career points. He is also sixth on Duke s career chart and 23rd in ACC history with a.399 (318-of-796) three-point field goal percentage and second at Duke and sixth in ACC history with 318 threepoint field goals. Led the Blue Devils in scoring each of the past two seasons. Knocked down five-or-more three-point field goals 20 times. Played an ACC-high 37.3 minutes per game, while also leading the league in three-point field goals (3.7 pg) and free throw percentage (.938). Has 86 double-figure scoring games and 42 games with 20-or-more points. Been named ACC Player of the Week five times. More on No. 4 J.J. Redick was labeled by many as the best shooting prospect when he entered college and the 6-4 guard has not disappointed. The Roanoke, Va., native ranks second at Duke with 318 three-point field goals, needing just 25 treys to surpass Trajan Langdon. In addition, Redick needs 96 threepointers to overtake former Virginia standout Curtis Staples for the ACC and NCAA three-point record. Last season, Redick canned a career-high 121 triples, while also shooting a career-best 40.3 percent from the arc. Despite developing a nice midrange game off the dribble, Redick s bread-andbutter remains his outside stroke. He has made at least one three-point field goal in 98 games and at least three triples 65 times. Career Three-Point FGs (Duke) 1. Trajan Langdon J.J. Redick 318 Career Three-Point FGs (ACC) 1. That total was one shy of the school record established by Cherokee Parks vs. Clemson in Last season, Williams eclipsed his own Duke single-season record of 111 rejections with 122 blocked shots in 33 games. Williams is second on Duke s all-time blocked shots list with 285 in his career (Mike Gminski is the school s career leader with 345). Williams now ranks in 10th place among all-time ACC rejections leaders (immediately ahead is Clemson s Sharone Wright with 288) and his 2.77 career average is eighth in league history. He is one of only two Duke players in history to average more than two blocks per game in his career. Mike Gminski averaged 2.83 rejections per game. Dockery made 24 three-point field goals a year ago after entering the season with just seven career treys. Another off-season of diligent work on his shooting mechanics has Dockery

7 poised to take over the point guard spot for the Blue Devils. He netted a career-best 15 points vs. Davidson Nov. 22. He established his career best with six assists vs. Valparaiso on Dec. 4. Against No. 5 Wake Forest on Feb. 20, Dockery played 27 minutes coming off the bench and had nine points, three assists, one steal and one blocked shot. Dockery s 43 steals also ranked second on Duke (10th in the ACC) and his 61 assists were third on the squad. After suffering a torn MCL in his right knee, Dockery returned to action vs. Delaware State on March 18 and played 24 minutes. Melchionni Looking For Another Solid Season An unsung hero for the Blue Devils last season was Lee Melchionni. He emerged to become a consistent threat from the perimeter and developed a knack for hitting big shots. In the opening round of the ACC Tournament, he recorded 16 points, nine rebounds and two assists as Duke defeated Virginia, At No. 2 North Carolina on March 6, Melchionni scored 15 points all in the second half on five three-pointers. Against St. John s on Feb. 26, he matched his career high with a game-best 16 points and established a career best with nine rebounds. On a day when Duke shot.314 as a team, he was 5-of-13 overall and 4-of-9 from three-point range. Melchionni has scored at least six points in 15 of his last 21 contests, including a 15-point effort on 5-of-6 shooting (3- of-4 from three-point range) in Duke s win vs. No. 5 Wake Forest on Feb. 20. Connected on 57-of-144 (.396) three-point attempts last year. Averaged 8.9 points on.421 shooting overall (45-of-107) and.438 from 3-pt. range (35-of-80) in ACC action. Has knocked down 71 career trifectas, including 57 as a junior. Reached double-figure in scoring 11 times last season percent of his made field goals have been three-pointers. Nelson Ready For Big Year With the departure of Daniel Ewing to graduation, sophomore DeMarcus Nelson will see his role increase significantly this season. While playing under 20 minutes a game a year ago, he was Duke s sixth-leading scorer (6.2 ppg.) and second leading rebounder (4.5 rpg.). This year, Nelson will have to opportunity to use his versatility and athleticism to impact the game both offensively and defensively. A year ago, Nelson showed an ability to get to the rim, defend opposing point guards and rebound with anyone on the floor. An improved outside touch this season will allow the Elk Grove, Calif., native to take his game to new heights. Last season against No. 2 North Carolina on Feb. 9, Nelson had 16 points on 5-of-10 shooting, two rebounds, three assists and a career-best four steals in 29 minutes. He followed that game with his first career start at Maryland on Feb. 12, and had eight points and seven boards vs. the Terps. Finished second among ACC frosh with 4.6 rebounds per game. Selected to the ACC All-Freshman team a year ago. Named the ACC Rookie of the Week on Jan. 17. Freshman Class The Blue Devils also feature what most recruiting analysts labeled as the top freshman class in the country. Eric Boateng, Jamal Boykin, Josh McRoberts, Greg Paulus and Martynas Pocius form the class. Boateng, a 6-10, 255-pound center, was a McDonald s All-America and a fourth team Parade All-America following his senior season at St. Andrew s School. Originally from London, England, he averaged 21 points, 16 rebounds and five blocked shots as a senior.
