2 THE SAINSBURY S SCHOOL GAMES The School Games are designed to build on the magic of London 2012 to enable every school and child to participate in competitive sport, including meaningful opportunities for young people with a disability. Nationally and locally, the School Games is being delivered through partnerships. The national partnership is made up of: the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), which has overall policy leadership, supported by the Department for Education (DforE) and the Department of Health (DoH); Sport England, which is the Lottery distributor and who are supporting the engagement of Sports Governing Bodies and County Sports Partnerships; The Youth Sport Trust, the landscape lead organisation for school sport, which has been commissioned by Sport England to provide development support to schools, sports clubs and other local partners. Over 128m of Lottery and Government funding is being invested nationally, to support the School Games. This includes: up to 35.5m Lottery funding from Sport England ; 28.4m exchequer funding from the Department of Health and Sport England to fund 450 School Games Organisers (SGOs) and Change4Life Clubs; and 65m exchequer funding from the DOE to release a PE teacher for one day a week in all secondary schools. At a local level, the Sainsbury's School Games is being delivered by schools, clubs, National Governing Bodies (NGBs), county sports partnerships (CSPs) and other local partners. Local Organising Committees (LOCs) have set up, chaired by Head Teachers, to oversee the county festivals. County sports partnerships have an important role to play in helping to stage the festivals. The Games are made up of four levels of activity: competition in schools; between schools; at county/area level; and a national event for the most talented young people in the UK. Schools who may require more guidance with regard to risk assessing and planning for taking For more information on the National Sainsbury s School Games go to

The MKSSP School Games Calendar has developed into an extensive yearlong programme of high quality, inclusive sports competitions for all Primary and Special Schools with some sports leading to County qualification. This year there are even more opportunities for young people to compete for their school with additional sports competitions in the programme, higher numbers of teams able to qualify and a variety of events for all ages. To book for an event please view the booking form on the MKSSP website where you can assess specific dates and venues. The Local Organising Committee and School Games Organisers (details below) are passionate about providing accessible and appropriate competition for all, celebrating the highest level of sporting talent in Milton Keynes and we believe that this is reflected within the sports chosen. Please promote the various competitions around your school as some alternative sports may not be part of your school curriculum but could be a fantastic opportunity for some of your students. 5 THE CODE OF CONDUCT The MKSSP encourages athletes, event organisers, team managers, officials and spectators to follow the advice set out in this document. This Code of Conduct aims to ensure that young people (as athletes, officials or coaches) have the opportunity to develop, learn and enjoy their experience of competition within a positive and safe environment. Cluster events (Level 2) are focused on encouraging more schools and children to take part, this may result in some of the rules/activities being relaxed and adapted to ensure that all children have a positive experience. At all Partnership finals (Level 2) and Level 3 School Games events, the document below will be given to teams; it will be also available to print. Team Managers are expected to familiarise themselves with the Code of Conduct, sharing the ethos and spirit of the games with students and any spectators or staff that may be with the team. Team Managers should familiarise themselves with the rules for the event. In the interests of encouraging participation, it may be possible to participate with gender ratios or squad sizes that differ from the rules. However, although your team would be welcome to participate, to ensure fair play and parity across the competition, your squad will not be included in the final results. In some events it may be possible to enter a B or C team, where there is capacity, however only your A team would be eligible to qualify. In addition to this, the MKSSP competitions will embed the School Games Values into all of the events. This will be done in 3 ways; 1. The events welcome pack to include information on the code of conduct, highlighting the School Games Values; 2. School will be nominated by their peers for a team value award, these will go towards to the values awards presented at the Partnership Celebration evening. 3. Young volunteers and Sporting Champions will award Values Certificates to athletes who demonstrate and showcase the School Games Values during the competitions. School Games Values Thank you to the MKSSP schools who supported the design and content of the Code of Conduct

13 Year 3/4 Match Rules We are encouraging schools to have played some mini games prior to attending the festival. The Year 3/4 basketball festival now has a final which will be games based. The winners and runners up will represent MK at the School Games County Basketball Finals. The rules for the matches for the finals will reflect the School Games rules which are; Each team will consist of 10 players 5 girls and 5 boys Girls will play the first half of a game and Boys the second half. At the start of each half, players of both teams will be lined up in height order facing each other and this will determine the man to man marking for the half. One of these pairs will be selected as goal catchers and stand in their respective hoops (within the protective zone) facing their lined up team mates. Different goal catchers each match so that all play the position by end of festival. Clearly no subs but should injury dictate then sub will come on as goal catcher. The game is started with a low toss up and restarted when a goal is scored or awarded by lining up at the centre-court (in height order) and giving possession to the team who conceded the goal. On receiving the ball each player must always dribble the ball (at least two moving bounces) before passing. On change of possession a team must pass the ball at least three times before they can shoot for goal to their goal-catcher. Players can steal the ball but only from the person they are man to man marking. Chasing the ball and double teaming will result in a goal being awarded against the defending player/team. Note for safety in Y3/4 matches NO STEALING if ball is held above head height whilst pivoting. A goal is scored if the goal catcher catches the ball on the full with both feet stationary in the marked off area. Any invalid attempt to score or ball rolling into the zone results in an end-line in-bound possession (to the side of the zone) to be passed in by the defending team. The goal catcher is protected by the zone and a goal will be awarded against any other player (defender or attacker) should they step into the zone All other normal basketball rules apply i.e. no double dribble (dribble, then held ball followed by another dribble) or travelling (walking with the ball). All violations result in a side-line possession to opponents. Ball to be passed in. Violent or persistent fouling, Y3/4 stealing above head height or bad behaviour not permitted and may result in referee awarding a goal to opponents.

This is a team competition; individuals receive points for their team. Mini Tennis Orange is a great way for players to continue their progress from Mini Tennis Red The aim of the festival is to give players a fun and positive experience playing Tennis in a competitive environment against other schools. Courts are smaller than full-size tennis courts allowing players to develop a rounded game whilst learning a range of techniques and tactics. An orange ball is used which is 50% slower than a yellow ball, the net should be 80cm at the middle of the net. This gives players better control at this important stage of development.
