Alice Dalton Memorial Scholarship Fund The UNC Foundation has set up the Alice Dalton Memorial Scholarship Fund in honor of Alice Dalton, late wife of head coach O. Kay Dalton, who passed away on Aug. 29, Donations may be sent to the Foundation at the Judy Farr Center, Greeley, CO or by calling Recent Tradition of Excellence The Northern Colorado football program was certainly one of the elite programs at the NCAA Division II level since In that time, the Bears had a record of and had made six playoff appearances. UNC won national titles in 1996 and Bears on the Move to Division I-AA The University of Northern Colorado athletic department is in the midst of a four-year transition to NCAA Division I. The UNC football squad will compete as an Independent school at the NCAA Division I-AA level in the 2003 season. UNC is actively pursuing a conference and would like to either join or create a football-only league in the next two seasons. Bears Prep for I-AA Transition The Bears will begin the transition from Div. II to Div I-AA with five contests against squads at the I- AA level or transitioning to that level in The Bears will travel to Pocatello, Idaho, on Sept. 13 to take on the Idaho State Bengals. UNC will turn around the next Saturday (Sept. 20) and travel to Bozeman, Mont., to take on the Montana State Bobcats. UNC will then travel to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., to battle the Florida Atlantic Owls on Oct. 18 before heading to Cedar City, Utah, on Nov. 8 to tangle with the Southern Utah Thunderbirds. The Bears will close the season with the Reclassification Classic at UC-Davis in Davis, Calif. Dalton Has History Against Idaho State UNC head coach O. Kay Dalton has a brief coaching history against Saturday s opponent Idaho State. When Dalton was the head coach at Western State, he went 1-1 against Idaho State. He lost to the Bengals, 22-10, in Pocatello at the Spud Bowl in 1961 but his Mountaineers bounced back in 1962 and scored a victory over ISU. Bears vs. Bengals -- The Last Time These two squads last met in the 1989 season with UNC coming away with a victory. The win was later forfeited due to the use of an ineligible player. The game on Sept. 9, 1989, was the first game at UNC for then head coach Joe Glenn.

3 2003 UNC Football Release (September 7, 2003), PAGE THREE UNC vs. Idaho State to be Televised by College Sports TV on Sept. 13 The UNC Bears will get a taste of national television Sept. 13 when they travel to Idaho State to take on the Bengals. College Sports Television will broadcast the game. College Sports Television, the nation s first television network devoted exclusively to college sports, has announced that it has added Idaho State s game on Sept. 13 with Northern Colorado to its national schedule, giving the Bengals five televised games this season, including three national broadcasts. The game time will remain at 6:35 pm. CSTV can be accessed through DirectTV, on Channel 610. The channel, which debuted on April 7, 2003, is in 10 million homes across the country. The founders of CSTV, Brian Bedol and Chris Bevilacqua, started The Classic Sports Channel, which was sold for $185 million and is now known as ESPN Classic. Bears Offense Continues to Ignite the Scoreboard The University of Northern Colorado offense has been lighting up its Division II competition this season. The Bears are averaging 58.0 points per game and winning by an average of 55.0 points per game in its first two contests. UNC set a single-game touchdown record in the first game of the season with 11 TDs in the win over New Mexico Highlands. The Bears offense continued to play in a higher gear on Saturday as they rolled to a 44-3 win at Western State (Colo.). Jackson Leads Receiving Corps Junior wide receiver Vincent Jackson (Colorado Springs, Colo./Widefield HS) put together a sensational effort again on Saturday as he racked up six catches for 95 yards and a touchdown. He now has five receiving touchdowns this season and 10 in his career at UNC. Jackson has also returned two punts for touchdowns at UNC to give him 12 total touchdowns. Matthews Continues Rushing Assault Senior running back Adam Matthews (Northglenn, Colo./Northglenn HS) continued his assault on the all-time UNC rushing record as he rushed for 106 yards in Saturday s 44-3 win over Western State College. Matthews ranks No. 5 on the Bears all-time rushing list with 1,903 career rushing yards. Matthews now needs 908 yards to tie Gaynor Blackmon for the all-time rushing yardage lead at UNC. Blackmon gained 2,891 yards in his career ( ) at UNC. Matthews set the UNC single-season rushing record as a junior in 2002 with 1,372 yards. Matthews also set the UNC single-game rushing record with 253 yards in the Bears victory over Central Missouri State in the NCAA Div. II playoffs. Matthews set the UNC record for consecutive 100+ rushing games in 2002 with six. He has rushed for 100+ yards in a game 10 times in his career at UNC, including both games so far in Wilson Keeping Pace Redshirt freshman Andre Wilson (Denver, Colo./George Washington HS) is looking to follow in Vincent Jackson s lead this season when it comes to scoring touchdowns. Wilson scored another touchdown on Saturday as he rambled 66 yards in the fourth quarter for his fifth touchdown of the season to tie Jackson for the team lead. Wilson has rushed for 213 yards in two games this season. He is averaging a team-best 8.5 yards per carry. Wilson had a debut game to remember in the Bears season opener against New Mexico Highlands. Wilson rushed for a game-high 135 yards and a school-record tying four touchdowns. UNC s Quarterback Competition Head coach O. Kay Dalton has a quarterback competition on his hands as the Bears head into week three of the season and rolling with a 2-0 record. Sophomore Tony Christensen (Littleton, Colo./ Mullen HS) has started both games and is 16-of-31 with three TDs and three INTs. Christensen has passed for 211 yards in the Bears two victories. Backup senior Josh Stewart (Piedmont, Okla./ Piedmont HS/Central Oklahoma) replaced Christensen in the third quarter of the Bears 44-3 win on Saturday after Christensen had thrown three interceptions in the game. Stewart came into the contest and passed for a game-high 151 yards on 6-of-10 passing. Stewart also completed the Bears longest pass play of the season when he hooked up junior Jamar Farbes (Aurora, Colo./Hinkley HS/ Dixie JC) for a 71-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter. Senior Steve Cutlip was suspended from the team on Thursday and will not rejoin the team until he completed his legal obligations stemming from his arrest on a parole violation on Aug. 31. NCAA Div. Jackson Bears Get Defensive Against Western State The UNC defense decided to take things into their own hands Saturday as they virtually shut down the Western State offense. The Bears limited the Mountaineers to 26 yards rushing on 31 attempts (0.8 yards per carry). The Bears also intercepted the Mountaineers on three occasions, recovered a fumble and blocked a punt for a touchdown. Zaitz made three-pointers from 39 yards, 19 yards and 30 yards. Zaitz has scored 20 points this season on 11 extra points and three field goals. Record-Breaking Win The Bears set the school record for touchdowns in a game on Saturday with 11 touchdowns. The previous mark of 10 had been been done four others times (most recently against Adams State, 1998). UNC s 72 points tied the school record set against Adams State in 1998 when the Bears notched a victory over the Grizzlies. The Bears margin of victory (59 points) was the most since the 1969 season when the Bears scored a 68-0 victory over Fort Lewis. Bears Thrash Western State, 44-3 GUNNISON, Colo. - Another week, a tougher opponent on the road but the same effort came from the University of Northern Colorado football team on Saturday, as the Bears demolished in-state rival Western State 44-3 to win by a decisive margin for the second straight week. UNC (2-0) obliterated New Mexico Highlands in its season opener and has now scored 116 points while giving up only 16 in its first two games of the season. As has become a weekly event, senior All-American running back rushed for over 100 yards, totalling 106 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries. He has broken the century mark in nine of his last 12 games dating back to last season. The Bears got on the board early thanks to a pair of first quarter field goals from sophomore kicker Justin Zaitz, the transfer from Colorado. UNC tallied its first touchdown of the day in the second quarter when starting quarterback Tony Christensen found junior wideout Vincent Jackson for a 15-yard touchdown. The reception was Jackson s fifth touchdown of the season. Matthews touchdown, early the third quarter, gave UNC 20-0 lead and Zaitz s third field goal of the day pushed that lead to seconds into the final quarter. On the day, Zaitz was 5-5 on extra points and nailed three field goals after missing four PAT s and a field goal in last week s rainy game in Greeley. Western State (0-2) added their lone score of the game later on the quarter on a 43-yard field goal from Travis Snyder. But the Bears would add three touchdowns in the final seven minutes of the game including a 71-yard strike from backup quarterback Josh Stewart to junior Jamar Farbes, a blocked punt that linebacker Thomas Smith returned for a touchdown and a 66-yard rushing score from freshman tailback Andre Wilson. UNC outrushed the Mountaineers 183 to 26 on the afternoon. The Bears have only allowed 74 net rushing yards in two games this season.
