LHSAA IMPORTANT DEFINITIONS AND INFORMATION The LHSAA would like to remind coaches of the following definitions and information that we feel will help coaches throughout the season: Forfeits can only be declared two ways: If a team does not show up to play and the officials declare the match a forfeit. This is the rule for both district and non-district matches. In DISTRICT PLAY: If a team chooses not to play a district match and the officials do not have the opportunity to declare a forfeit; (Example: A team calls ahead and says that they are not going to play the match.) THEN- the only way that the match is a forfeit is if the principals of the district vote to declare the match a forfeit. The principals have the authority to make the two teams play, declare a forfeit, or declare the game a no contest. NO SCHOOL SHALL DECLARE A FORFEIT WITHOUT THE ABOVE MENTIONED RULES BEING FOLLOWED.

LHSAA IMPORTANT DEFINITIONS AND INFORMATION CANCELLATIONS - A cancelled match is defined as a match that BOTH teams agree will not be played and will not be rescheduled. POSTPONEMENTS A postponed match is a match that both schools agree to reschedule and play at a later date. ALL DISTRICTS MATCHES SHALL BE PLAYED. Your district schedule serves as the contractual agreement for these matches. If a district match is postponed for any reason, it shall be rescheduled and played.

2011 LHSAA POLICY ON CONCUSSIONS POINTS OF EMPHASIS A CONCUSSION is defined as a traumatic brain injury that interferes with normal brain function. An athlete does NOT have to lose consciousness to have suffered a concussion. COMMON SYMPTOMS include the following: Headache, fogginess, difficulty concentrating, easily confused, slowed thought processes, difficulty with memory, nausea, lack of energy, dizziness or poor balance, blurred vision, sensitive to light and sounds, mood changes irritable, anxious, or tearful..

STATE LAW ACT 314 According to the recent passage of Act 314: 1. Your school system shall educate coaches, officials, volunteers, athletes, and parents about the risk of concussions and head injuries. 2. Each coach and official is required to complete an annual concussion recognition course 3. Each athlete and their parents/guardians shall sign a concussion and head injury information sheet which shall be designed by your local school system. 4. Due to the passage of Act 314, each official shall be required to view the NFHS Course titled: Concussions: What you need to know as well as sign the Officials Concussions Statement which shall be kept on file with your assignment secretary.

Recommended Concussion Management 1. The LHSAA highly recommends that all member schools have an appropriate health -care professional at all athletic events. 2. If an appropriate health- care professional is not present at an athletic contest and an athlete is removed for showing signs and symptoms of a head injury, after an appropriate examination, the head coach may re-enter the athlete into the contest. However, once re-entered, if the athlete continues to show signs and symptoms of a concussion and is removed a second time, he/she shall not be allowed to return to play that day and until the protocol for return to play has been followed. 3. In the absence of a health-care professional, the head coach shall be designated as the RESPONSIBLE individual to make the diagnosis whether his/her athlete has or does not have a concussion.

2012 LHSAA POLICY ON CONCUSSIONS POINTS OF EMPHASIS An appropriate Heath Care Professional is defined as an individual or individuals from the following professions. They are the ONLY individuals who are designated as the persons to DIAGNOSE whether an athlete has or does not have a concussion. 1. MD A medical doctor licensed to practice medicine in Louisiana 2. DO A doctor of osteopathic medicine licensed to practice medicine in Louisiana 3. PA Physicians Assistant licensed to practice in Louisiana 4. NP A registered nurse practitioner licensed to practice in Louisiana 5. PM A paramedic licensed to practice in Louisiana ( an EMT CAN NOT make this decision ) 6. AT An athletic trainer licensed nationally or by the state of Louisiana

2011 LHSAA POLICY ON CONCUSSIONS MANAGEMENT PROTOCOL The LHSAA has adopted the following policy with all sports for dealing with concussions. 1. NO athlete shall return to play or practice on the same day of a concussion. 2. ANY athlete suspected of having a concussion SHALL be evaluated by an appropriate health care professional that day. If there is not a health care professional available, the HEAD COACH shall make the determination. WHEN IN DOUBT, KEEP THE STUDENT-ATHLETE OUT!!!! 3. ANY athlete diagnosed with a concussion shall be medically cleared by a MEDICAL DOCTOR or DOCTOR OF OSTEOPATHIC medicine, each of which must be licensed to practice in Louisiana, prior to resuming participation in any practice or competition. 4. After medical clearance, RETURN TO PLAY, should follow a step-wise protocol with provisions as determined by a MEDICAL DOCTOR licensed in Louisiana for delayed RETURN TO PLAY based upon return of any signs or symptoms.

Suggested Concussion Management If there is no appropriate health-care professional available to evaluate the athlete, the athlete SHOULD NOT be permitted by the coach to return to play. Athletes with continued concussion symptoms are at significant risk for recurrent, cumulative and even catastrophic consequences of a second concussive injury.

Importance of Line Judges Rule 5-8 Importance of line judges to the match referees in today s fast pace and powerful play cannot be overemphasized Line judges are many times not registered referees and may be parents, other adults or players Burden of quality officiating in the line judge position rests with the schools Advanced and proper training of the line judges is paramount to the quality of the officiated match

Substitutes and Libero Entry onto Playing Court Rules 10-2 and 10-4 R2 must establish rapport and communication protocol with scorer, libero tracker and timer R2 needs to provide close attention to these positions early in the match to be certain their responsibilities are progressing smoothly Lack of focus in any of these positions can result in undetected error Discovery of an error later in play may cause confusion, delay and interrupt flow of the set Good training, communication between R2 and assistant officials and focus on responsibilities are keys for success
