SECOND EDITION Complete Wing-T Offensive Line Play Coaching the Skilled Athlete in the Wing-T Phil Willenbrock The material in Complete Wing-T Offensive Line Play has proven effective in helping develop offensive linemen in the wing-t, and can be used as a blueprint for success by the wing-t offensive line coach. Included in this one-of-akind book are in-depth outlines and detailed explanations of the following topics: Blocking progression Stance and footwork Individual and combination blocks Pass protection Alignment, communication, and rule-blocking interpretation Practice planning and organization Phil Willenbrock has been very detailed in this book. It should be a reference for all wing-t coaches, no matter how many years they ve been working with the offense. I know I ll use it. Barry Streeter Head Football Coach Gettysburg College In my opinion, Phil Willenbrock is one of the best wing-t offensive line coaches in the country. What he has offered with this book is a tremendously valuable tool for coaching offensive linemen. Everything a wing-t line coach needs, and more, is contained in this manual. Dennis Creehan Defensive Coordinator Calgary Stampeders Phil has provided a tremendous resource with this book. He has worked with our linemen each summer and is one of the premier wing-t offensive line coaches in the country. I will use Complete Wing-T Offensive Line Play as a guide for my line coaches year in and year out. 4 Dedication I would like to dedicate this book to my wife, Karen, and our three children, Kelsea, Jacob, and Kendal, who continue to provide the love, support, and encouragement that is so important in the life of a football coach. 3
Acknowledgments There are few original ideas in the coaching profession. The information I have offered in this book was learned while working with, or playing for, the following head coaches, whom I would like to thank for providing me an opportunity to learn under their direction. Also included in this list are other coaches who have been important to my development as a football coach: Paul Colgate, Dennis Creehan, Harold Hamilton, Blair Hrovat, Mike Kelly, Dick Mannini, Ron Nighswonger, Ron Pavlechko, Ron Rankin, Vic Rowen, Jerry Sandusky, Barry Streeter, and Dick Ulrich. The assistant coaches with whom I have had an opportunity to work have also provided significant value to my experience in the coaching profession. 4

Preface Little disagreement exists among those of us closely associated with the game of football that the play and performance of the offensive line is perhaps the most important ingredient in an efficient offense. This unique group of athletes must be the most cohesive unit on the team, and must recognize and rejoice in team accomplishments rather than in individual glory. In the wing-t offensive scheme, the offensive lineman needs to be the most intelligent and, truly, the most skilled member of the offensive unit. Many coaches have experienced success with the wing-t offense. The breadth of the offense is tremendous, with misdirection, power, counter, option, play-action, and dropback capabilities within the system. It is an offense that can easily be adapted to take advantage of the gifted players that each team may possess on a year-to-year basis. Regardless of where the gifted talent may lie, one area can never have a down season the offensive line. Linemen in the wing-t must be multitalented and develop a mastery of many aspects of successful offensive line play. Iso schemes, power schemes, the ability to zone block, mobility to pull and log or trap, and the ability to be an effective pass blocker, are among the skills that a lineman in the wing-t offense must develop. It has been stated and generally understood that the wing-t offense is a system of football. As coaches, we become comfortable and find confidence in systems that are effective. For many years, and at every level of football, the wing-t offensive system has allowed many teams to find offensive success. In similar fashion, the way that the lineman is taught within the wing-t system is also a clearly defined system of drills and progressions used in teaching line play. While the system of teaching wing-t offensive line techniques is very structured and systematic for the wing-t offense, I believe that the drills, skills, and coaching points taught are effective in any offensive scheme. The blocking techniques include sound principles of offensive line play, regardless of scheme, and can be used with the I, option, zone, or any other offensive philosophy. Having coached and played in the offense, and specifically the offensive line, for 20 years, I have chosen to write what hopefully you will find to be the most comprehensive book on wing-t offensive line play in print, and one that you and your staff will be able to use as a resource for your offense. It is my hope that the information in this book will allow your coaching staff to use this as a reference to assist in developing an efficient and effective way to teach offensive line play, or as a blueprint for a successful wing-t offensive line. 6
1 The Wing-T Offensive Lineman The characteristics of a solid offensive lineman are consistent regardless of a team s offensive style. Explosion, balance, flexibility, and coordination are as important in the wing-t as in any other style. However, while an outstanding offensive lineman at any level will succeed in any offense, a below-average lineman can be a standout performer in the wing-t. As all offensive line coaches know, the players relegated to the offensive line are too slow to play defensive line and too nonathletic to play tight end. In brief, offensive line coaches often get not the best of the rest, but simply the rest. In most situations, they cannot recruit the best players, but are expected to mold together a cohesive and effective offensive line that will execute. The unique aspects of the wing-t offense provide a perfect opportunity for coaching a below-average player to perform at a high rate of effectiveness and efficiency. Four reasons exist why the wing-t lineman can get it done, even if he is a belowaverage player: Angle schemes Man schemes Offensive misdirection Multiplicity 7
Angle Schemes A basic philosophy of the wing-t offense is to have schemes that call for a block in at the hole, a block out at the hole, and a block through the hole. When a player angle blocks, the area of impact on the defender is on the side and at the hip. A smaller offensive player who knows the tools of the trade can move a larger body more easily when using the right technique (Figure 1-1). Figure 1-1. Example of angle schemes Man Schemes While plenty of zone blocking schemes are used in the wing-t offense, man schemes are utilized often as well. Most of these man schemes require lateral double-team blocks and a two-on-one situation with obvious benefits (Figure 1-2). Figure 1-2. Example of man schemes Offensive Misdirection Because of the misdirection involved in this offense, offensive linemen will have frequent opportunities to block a defender whose eyes are on the backfield. The wing- T is a series-oriented offense with plays that complement one another. When facing misdirection and complementary plays, a confused defender becomes easy to block (Figure 1-3). 8
Multiplicity Numerous offensive blocking schemes are used in the wing-t. It is a good idea to have approximately 10 run schemes in addition to your pass-protection schemes. The variety of schemes you use should depend on the experience level of your players. Remember, the important thing is not the number of schemes you have, but rather the number of schemes that your line can properly execute. Three Arguments in Defense of the Wing-T Lineman While running the wing-t offense has many advantages, the greatest advantage is that a team can have success with players who may not be as effective in other schemes. Three common arguments regarding wing-t offensive linemen are presented in this section, along with a defense of these players in each case. The Finesse Misnomer A wing-t lineman is not a finesse player, despite the common assumption. Of course, sometimes a defense is schemed and cannot find the ball, but for the most part, the misdirection of the offense simply adds to the effectiveness of the lineman. The wing- T offensive lineman should never be told that he is a finesse player in a finesse offense. When it comes down to fourth-and-short, the line had better be able to get movement off the line of scrimmage and your linemen need to know that. When the linemen have learned the correct progressions and techniques of being dominant players, and that skill is matched by the backfield actions of the offense, you have a very potent package. Intelligence Figure 1-3. Example of misdirection Most people involved in football know that the offensive line is consistently the group with the highest grade point average. The line coach needs to use this intelligence to his advantage. Coaches tend to underestimate the offensive line s capacity to learn. Load your linemen early with schemes and line calls, force them to understand that 9
they are the smartest bunch on the field, and never underestimate their mental capacity. When preparing the offensive linemen, stretch them to the limit to determine when you have reached their overload point, and then back off. Linemen don t have to be geniuses to be effective in the wing-t, but they must smarter than their counterparts on the defensive front. The Lineman as a Skilled Player An offense has no more skilled player than an effective offensive lineman. By definition, a skill is a learned or acquired trade. Many coaches talk in terms of their linemen becoming master craftsmen. The quarterbacks, receivers, and running backs are the gifted players whose talents have allowed them to be picked first since kindergarten. These kids were running, throwing, and catching for years before they started playing organized football. But how many times have you walked by a primary school playground and seen a kid duck-walking or pushing one of his classmates across the schoolyard with a flat back? Linemen are the most skilled players on the field; make sure they understand that fact. Your linemen come to you every day to sharpen their skills and learn their trade. The techniques and coaching points in the following chapters will help you teach your wing-t linemen to become the most skilled players on the field. 10
