16 SOUTHERN CONFERENCE SAMFORD RECORDS HISTORY REVIEW OPPONENTS PLAYERS COACHES OUTLOOK QUICK FACTS T he Southern Conference [SoCon], which began its 88th season of intercollegiate competition in 2008, is a national leader in emphasizing the development of student- athletes, building lifelong leaders and role models. SoCon has been on the forefront of innovation to develop creative solutions to address issues facing intercollegiate athletics. SoCon established the first conference basketball tour nament (1921), tackled the issue of freshmen eligibility (1922) and developed women s championships (1984). It was the first conference to institute the 3-point goal in basketball (1980). SoCon is the nation s fifth-oldest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association. Only the Big Ten (1896), Missouri Valley (1907), Pacific 10 (1915) and Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older. Academic excellence is a major part of SoCon s tradition. Hundreds of S SoCon student-athletes have been recognized on ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All- America and All-District teams. Nineteen Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected from conference institutions. SoCon consists of 12 members in five states throughout the Southeast, and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships. SoCon offices are located in Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. A textile mill that was in operation from 1880 until 1999, Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004, and offers the league first-class meeting areas and offices as well as a spacious library for SoCon s historical documents. MEMBERSHIP HISTORY On Feb. 25, 1921, representatives from 14 of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association s [SIAA] 30 members met at Atlanta s Piedmont Hotel to establish the Southern Intercollegiate Conference. At the inaugural meeting were officials from Alabama, Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn), Clemson, Georgia, Georgia School John Lamarino Commissioner of Technology (now Georgia Tech), Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi A&M (now Mississippi State), North Carolina, North Carolina State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Polytechnic Institute (now Virginia Tech) and Washington & Lee. Dr. S. V. Sanford of Georgia was chosen as acting chairman, and N. W. Dougherty of Tennessee was named secretary. The decision to form a new athletics conference was motivated by the desire to have a workable number of conference games for each league member. With 30 schools in the SIAA by the early 1920s, it was impossible to play every school at least once during the regular season, and many schools went several years between playing some conference members. In 1920, the SIAA voted down proposed rules that an athlete must be in a college a year before playing on its teams and refused to abolish a rule permitting athletes to play summer baseball for money. Play began in the fall of A year later, six more schools joined the fledgling league: Tulane (which had attended the inaugural meeting but had elected not to join), Florida, Louisiana (now LSU), Mississippi, South Carolina and Vanderbilt. VMI joined in 1925, and Duke was added in By the 1930s, membership in the SoCon had reached 23 schools. C. P. Sally Miles of Virginia Tech, president of SoCon, called the annual league meeting to order on Dec. 9, 1932, at the Farragut Hotel in Knoxville, Tenn. Sanford announced that 13 institutions west and south of the Appalachian Mountains were reorganizing as the Southeastern Conference. Members of that new league included Alabama, Alabama Polytechnic Institute, Florida, Georgia, Georgia School of Technology, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Mississippi A&M, University of the South, Tennessee, Tulane and Vanderbilt. Sanford stated that the division was made along geographical lines. Florida s Dr. J. J. Tigert, acting as spokesman for the withdrawing group, regretted the move but believed it was necessary as SoCon had grown too large. The resignations were Geoff Cabe Senior Associate Commissioner accepted, and the withdrawing schools formed the new league that began play in SoCon continued with membership of 10 institutions: Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina, Virginia, VMI, Virginia Tech and Washington & Lee. By 1952, SoCon included 17 colleges and universities. Another split occurred when seven schools Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest departed to form the Atlantic Coast Conference, which began play in The revamped SoCon included The Citadel, Davidson, Furman, George Washington, Richmond, VMI, Virginia Tech, Washington & Lee, West Virginia and William & Mary. Today, the league continues to thrive with a membership that includes 12 insti - tutions and a footprint that spans five states: Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama and Georgia. Current league members are Appalachian State, College of Charleston, Chattanooga, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern, Samford, UNC Greensboro, Western Carolina and Wofford. LEADERSHIP SoCon named its first commissioner in December Duke head football coach Wallace Wade made the transition from Blue Devil coach to athletics administration as the first person at the helm of the conference. Lloyd Jordan replaced Wade as the commissioner in 1960 and served a 14-year term until Ken Germann became the league head in Germann was commissioner for 13 years and orchestrated the league s expansion to include women s athletics. In 1987, he was succeeded by Dave Hart, who spearheaded the transfer of the league office from Charlotte, N.C. to Asheville, N.C. Wright Waters succeeded Hart upon his retirement in Under Waters leadership, SoCon expanded to 12 members, added three women s sports and posted record revenue from the basketball tournament. 17 SOUTHERN CONFERENCE is currently the commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference, was followed by Alfred B. White in A veteran member of the NCAA office, White introduced the current con - ference logo and elevated SoCon s com - mitment to the marketing and development of corporate partners. Danny Morrison headed the conference from 2001 to 2005 and orchestrated SoCon s move from Asheville, N.C. to Spartanburg, S.C. Under his leadership, SoCon increased its marketing and pro motional efforts. John Iamarino was named commissioner of SoCon on Jan. 2, He has promoted the conference through an ambitious agenda that has improved competition, upgraded compliance-related matters, and increased the marketing and brand awareness of the con - ference and its member institutions. CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY The first Southern Conference Championship was the league basketball tournament held in Atlanta in The North Carolina Tar Heels won the tournament and became the first recognized league champion in any sport. The Southern Conference Tournament remains the oldest of its kind in college basketball. Commissioner Germann spearheaded SoCon s expansion to include women s athletics during the season. That year, league championships were held in volley ball, basketball and tennis. Cross- country joined the mix in 1985, and the league began holding indoor and outdoor track champion - ships in SoCon insti tuted golf and softball championships in the spring of 1994 and added soccer in the fall of The Germann Cup, named in honor of the former commissioner, annually recognizes the top women s athletics programs in the conference. From its humble beginnings, women s athletics have become an integral part of SoCon and its success. SoCon declares champions in 10 men s sports football, soccer, cross-country, basketball, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, wrestling, baseball, tennis and golf and nine women s sports soccer, volleyball, cross-country, basketball, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, tennis, golf and softball. FOOTBALL SoCon has excelled as the premier Football Championship Subdivision [FCS] conference. SoCon member Appalachian State has won the last three FCS titles, the first team to do so. The league boasts more than 250 players who have garnered All-America recognition and numerous national player and coach of the year awards. The conference has had at least one team in the top 10 of the final FCS poll for 23 consecutive years with at least two teams finishing in the top 20 in every season since SoCon has placed multiple representatives in the FCS Playoffs in 21 of 25 seasons, with 16 Championship Game appearances and eight national titles. SoCon has had at least one team reach the semifinals in nine of the last 10 years and in 15 of the last 17 seasons. In 2007, Appalachian State became the first FCS team to defeat a nationally ranked Football Bowl Subdivision [FBS] team. The Mountaineers defeated No. 5-ranked Michigan, 34-32, on Sept. 1 before a sellout crowd at Michigan Stadium. Prior to the conference s reclassification in 1981, SoCon football teams appeared in 34 bowl games, posting a record of There are nearly 40 former SoCon players in the College Football Hall of Fame. Former North Carolina running back Charlie Choo Choo Justice helped guide North Carolina to three bowl appearances. He was a first-team All-America selection in 1948 and In 1949, he earned first-team All-Conference honors for the fourth consecutive season, becoming the first player in league history to achieve that feat. Another of the league s football products who made it to the College Football Hall of Fame is Sam Huff of West Virginia. Huff was a three-year starter on both the offensive and defensive lines for the Mountaineers. In 1955, he earned first-team All-America honors on the field and was a first-team Academic All- America for his work in the classroom. He played 12 seasons in the National Football League for the New York Giants and the Washington Redskins. He was a five-time All-Pro defensive lineman and is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. SoCon has continued to produce outstanding student-athletes. In 1999, Georgia Southern s Adrian Peterson captured the Walter Payton Award presented annually to the FCS s most outstanding offensive player. Furman s Louis Ivory was awarded the honor in 2000, and Georgia Southern s Jayson Foster was presented with the 2007 trophy. Appalachian State s Dexter Coakley was a three-time All-Conference selection and consensus All-America in 1994, 1995 and 1996 before going on to stardom with the Dallas Cowboys. He won a pair of Buck Buchanan Awards, given to FCS s top defensive player each year. Terrell Owens went from catching passes at Chattanooga to a stellar NFL career. Western Carolina s David Patten and Appalachian State s Matt Stevens were members of the New England Patriots Super Bowl Champion team in Patten also earned Super Bowl rings with the Patriots in 2004 and QUICK FACTS OUTLOOK COACHES PLAYERS OPPONENTS REVIEW HISTORY RECORDS SAMFORD SAMFORDSPORTS.COM 81
