2 BOSTON UNIVERSITY MEN S ICE HOCKEY terriers and the olympics Terriers at the Olympic Games When hockey fans think of the Olympic Games and Boston University s involvement, their thoughts automatically turn to 1980 and Lake Placid, N.Y., where four former Terriers served as catalysts for the U.S. team that won the gold medal. The memory of Mike Eruzione, Jim Craig, Jack O Callahan and Dave Silk embracing each other after the gold medal game will forever be engraved in our memories. However, Terriers have been involved in Olympic hockey competition dating back to While Jesse Owens was drawing international attention on the track, two former Terriers were winning a bronze medal in hockey. Below is a list of former Terriers who were involved in Olympic competition, including those who participated for the Canadian, Japanese, Dutch and Italian Olympic Teams. Five former Boston University hockey players have earned one of the highest honors an athlete can receive an Olympic gold medal. The first Terrier who was on a U.S. Olympic gold medal-winning hockey team was Dick Rodenhiser. Rodenhiser, who won a silver medal in Cortina, Italy, in 1956, came back to win the gold in Squaw Valley, Calif., in Twenty years later, in 1980, in the Miracle on Ice, Mike Eruzione, Jim Craig, Jack O Callahan and Dave Silk were on the U.S. Olympic Team that won the gold in Lake Placid, N.Y. Former Terrier John Hynes served as head coach of Team USA at the 2008 World Junior Championship. Scott Young is one of just 16 players who have participated in three World Junior Championships. Ten Terriers have earned medals at the World Juniors. In 1986, Mike Kelfer, David Quinn and Scott Young were members of the first U.S. team to ever medal at the event, claiming the bronze. Rich Breenan, Scott Lachance, John Lilley, Mike Prendergast and Keith Tkachuk were on the 1992 team that won the bronze medal with a 5-2 record. Dan Lacouture and Tom Poti were on the 1997 team that won the silver medal with a mark. At the time, it was the best finish ever by a U.S. team that had won a medal just three times prior. In 2004, the U.S. earned its first World Junior title, posting a perfect 6-0 record. Scott Young was named to the Championship All-Tournament Team in 1987, while Scott Lachance earned the honor as part of the 1991 team. Five current BU players (Colby Cohen, Vinny Saponari, Kevin Shattenkirk, David Warsofsky, Colin Wilson) were invited to this past summer s Junior Evaluation Camp in Lake Placid. brian strait ( left) and colin wilson ( right) at the 2008 world junior championships terriers and the world junior championship 145

Sixty-eight of those were Terriers at the time they were drafted. The Terriers have had the third-largest number of draftees of any school, trailing only Minnesota and Michigan. The number drafted is the most of any Hockey East school. Nine Terriers have been drafted in the first round. Included in this list is Rick DiPietro, who played for the Terriers during the season. In the 2000 draft, DiPietro became the first goalie ever selected as the number one overall pick when the New York Islanders made him their top choice. In the 2008 Entry Draft, Colin Wilson was picked seventh overall by the Nashville Predators, and four incoming freshmen (Corey Trivino, Vinny Saponari, David Warsofsky, Grant Rollheiser) were also selected to give BU a league-high five picks. On the following pages is the list of Terrier players who have been drafted over the past 39 years.
