SEPTEMBER NHL DRAFT PRE-SEASON TOP 30 NHL DRAFT TOP 30 In this issue we preview the 2012 NHL Draft with our pre-season top 30 player rankings. We added a few extra prospects who were close to cracking the top 30. It should prove to be another exciting race to the #1 overall position. [1] NHL RESEARCH CAMP Once again we were on hand at the 2011 NHL Research and Development Camp. We give you a summary of our impressions of a few of the players who took part in the camp.

AT THE TOP 1. Nail Yakupov - RW - Sarnia Sting (OHL) Yakupov has explosive speed, and generates power quickly to reach top speed. He plays on the wing and can explode down it. He also possesses the core strength to withstand a decent amount of physicality to get to the net. He s a very solid positional player in the offensive zone who thrives off the one-timer opportunities he receives due to positioning. For someone his size he has tremendous physical play. He s punished players. On a team that had a number of 6 3, 6 4 and bigger players, he was delivering the biggest hits over the course of many games. His style of play is that which closely resembles a smaller version of Alexander Ovechkin. He has an exceptional ability to shoot the puck, skate, and deliver hits on opposing players, however, he needs to pass the puck a little more to become a little less predictable. We would like to see him show more commitment in the defensive zone to round out his game. 2. Mikhail Grigorenko - LC Quebec Remparts (QMJHL) He is an excellent playmaker. Grigorenko reads and anticipates the play very well and reacts accordingly. Mikhail has a solid 6 2 frame, and is one of the smartest players in the draft. Grigorenko shows off a nice It s a Tight race It should be another tight race for the first overall pick in [2]

one-timer as often as he can. He shows great awareness and coverage in the defensive zone. His shot is good but not quite as high end as others in the draft. He does have soft hands though, and is silky smooth with some dekes. Mikhail has a chance to shine this season with the QMJHL s Quebec Remparts 3. Ryan Murray - LD - Everett Silvertips (WHL) Ryan Murray displays excellent composure and patience while maintaining strong defensive positioning. Murray has great skating ability and has proven he can stake backwards faster than some forwards can skate forward. Ryan has excellent vision and awareness in the offensive zone. He is an excellent passer and he finds teammates through traffic and makes highly difficult passes look easy. He is considered an offensive defenseman, but he has proven to make some strong plays defensively. He s not a physical player, but he doesn t shy away from the physical game either, throwing hits when necessary, and taking hits to make plays. 4. Alex Galchenyuk - LC - Sarnia Sting (OHL) Alex is a player who has the size you d like to see out of a developing power forward, but plays a very finesse game. Alex has been an excellent compliment to Nail in Sarnia due to his excellent passing ability. He handles the puck extremely well, and is able to create plays for both himself and others. He is most dangerous around the goal line, where he can hit open teammates with a pass. He also has excellent lateral movement, and will cut right across the crease using his size to help him. Alex is generally not an aggressive player, and rarely will he throw a hit. He has taken knocks for his skating ability, but he has outstanding top speed. However, he does need to work on the first few steps, and the development of his first few steps could go a long way in helping him improve his draft stock. He has been given a good reputation in the defensive zone, but we disagree with this. He was given a big boost in penalty kill time as a 16 year old during the coaching change in Sarnia. He wanders around a lot in the neutral zone, and a lot of the time shows absolutely zero interest in getting back into his own zone. This has been a constant frustration for our scouts. Alex shows some awareness once he gets back, but usually takes his time getting there. This needs to improve before we look at Alex moving any higher in our rankings. 5. Filip Forsberg - LW - Leksand (SWE) Forsberg has good size at 6 1 and has this dynamic unpredictability that keeps defensemen on edge. He has a very solid release on his shot, and is dangerous from all over the offensive zone in his ability to make both himself and his teammates better. He s a player who we d like to see add a little more muscle to his frame, as he can get pushed around a little at the Eliteserien. 6. Brendan Gaunce - LC - Belleville Bulls (OHL) Gaunce is a player who consistently impresses us and has improved at a high rate. Gaunce showed us last year his ability to play a limited role. Gaunce works hard in the corners, frustrating defensemen in front of the net, and playing a solid defensive game. Brendan was a devastating offensive player in minor midget, and recently, he has shown that touch on the international stage. He is evolving into an excellent player. In addition to his ability, you cannot undervalue Brendan s character. He shows leadership much like his older brother Cameron, the former two year captain of the Mississauga St. Michael s Majors. Brendan has the size, and the tools to be a great two-way center at the NHL [3]

level and is also captain material. Gaunce is a pretty safe bet to play in the NHL, and plays a very similar game to that of Jordan Staal. Brendan has shown off playmaking ability and is able to score himself as well. 7. Jacob Trouba - RD - USNTDP (USHL) Jacob Trouba is highlighted by his great combination of size and skill. In a draft that doesn t contain a great deal of big, talented defensemen, Trouba has good size and throws some solid hits. He has excellent skating ability and intelligence. He finds himself in a position to be a top 10 pick. Although Trouba is still developing and makes his share of mistakes, he possesses a great two-way combination of skill where he has proven to be physical defensively, and make some strong 1 on 1 plays. He is also is capable of unloading a strong shot from the point, and moves the puck fairly well in the offensive zone. 8. Zemgus Girgensons - FW - Dubuque Fighting Saints (USHL) Girgensons has a great frame and is not afraid to play physical. He is very dangerous in the offensive zone, and seems to create a scoring chance every shift. Girgensons protects the puck very well and is willing to drive to the net. He has great awareness of the play around him and anticipates it very well. Girgensons is a decent skater for his size, and appears to take pride in his defensive game, rushing back into his own zone when the opposing team rushes the puck. Girgensons bring power forward size and skill to the table and really doesn t appear to have any major holes in his game. 9. Olli Maatta - LD - London Knights (OHL) Maatta is a defenseman who has great mobility, and is very effective in his own zone. He is tough to beat 1 on 1, and is effectively positioned in the defensive zone. North America will be a big adjustment to Maatta. He will need to use his size more, and gain more upper body strength. It will also test his ability to produce offensively, as this is an area which we haven t seen enough production out of Maatta to this point. There is no denying his high end upside which makes him a preseason top talent. 10. Mathew Dumba - RD - Red Deer Rebels (WHL) Dumba at times can be a tale of two defensemen. The majority of the time Mathew makes outstanding offensive plays, and has great mobility and is an excellent puck rusher. He s proven to have a strong shot from the point, and will use it at the appropriate times. He moves the puck very well, and likes to play physical. Dumba gets underrated for his defensive ability, and has made some great plays handling 1 on 1 situations. The concerns with Dumba are the major mental lapses, playing soft on the puck, wandering at times, and he has looked generally disinterested at times. The good certainly outweighs the bad, and we believe he will be able to work out these minor concerns. 11. Morgan Rielly - LD - Moose Jaw Warriors (WHL) Morgan is a smooth skating defender who has great tools and plays a smart game. Rielly has a knack for understanding situations within the game. Rielly has great vision and makes good decisions with the puck in all three zones. He is a poised player and has high NHL upside based on his overall solid game in both ends of the ice. It s a draft to select a high end prospect for your back end -Mark Edwards [4]

12. Jordan Schmaltz - RD - Sioux City Musketeers (USHL) Jordan is a very smart defenseman in all three zones. He can rush the puck on occasion, but always seems to make a solid first pass out of the zone. He handles players one on one, using his size and stick when necessary in this situation. We would like to see him engage more with the physical game to make better use of his size. He is smart in the offensive zone, distributing the puck effectively under pressure, and has a decent slap shot from the point as well. His hockey sense completes the package, and helps him gain consideration as a legitimate top 15 prospect. 13. Cody Ceci - RD - Ottawa 67s (OHL) Ceci is considered a dangerous defenseman on all areas of the ice. Cody is solid offensively, where he rushes the puck up the ice, and protects it well with his solid size. He displays a solid shot from the point, and intelligent puck moving decisions. He is also very reliable in his own zone maintaining solid positioning on oncoming forwards, and uses his size, and hockey sense to break down plays for the opposition. His positioning is solid, and combined with his strength, he doesn t lose many battles. Ceci is a very reliable defender who plays at a very consistent pace. 14. Griffin Reinhart - LD - Edmonton Oil Kings (WHL) Reinhart is a prototypical big, shutdown defenseman. He hasn t quite impressed on the big stage as of now, but he s fairly smart, and uses his size effectively to handle oncoming forwards of any size. What makes Reinhart an intriguing prospect is his ability to integrate some interesting offensive upside into his package. He has a solid shot from the point. He carries himself in such a way that he is effective whether he s in the defensive zone, or the offensive zone. Reinhart has some solid bloodlines supporting him as well. 15. Nick Ebert - RD - Windsor Spitfires (OHL) The strongest area of Ebert s game has got to be his skating. He is effective rushing the puck up the ice. He has a respectable shot, and is generally a player who is good overall, doesn t have a specific standout ability, or standout flaw. Ebert has shown he can be effective at both ends of the ice. He distributes the puck very well, but usually will be strong with his positional play in his own zone. He s not an overly physical player, but he will throw the body and has good upper body strength. 16. Henrik Samuelsson - RW - USNTDP (USHL) A huge kid who would easily be a top 10 talent if not for some skating issues which hold him back. He is a wizard at scoring in tight and a monster along the walls. Henrik is solid on both sides of the dots. If Henrik improves his feet this season he will shoot up the draft boards of may NHL teams. 17. Slater Koekkoek - LD - Peterborough Petes (OHL) Slater is a very mature defenseman who is very effective in both ends of the ice. He is considered stronger on the offensive side, and has a respectably good shot from the point. He moves the puck effectively as well, and shows tremendous poise under pressure when having to make quick decisions. He s not overly physical but will step up when needed. He quietly handles oncoming forwards well in 1 on 1 situations and maintains strong defensive positioning in his own zone. He makes intelligent moves out of the zone and chooses the rush vs. pass option very well. [5]

18. Charles Hudon - LC - Chicoutimi Saugeneens (QMJHL) What he lacks in size, he makes up in heart. Hudon really flies around and loves to crash and bang despite his size. He is also is very intelligent player in the offensive zone, and makes great plays both for himself and his teammates. In the recent Ivan Hlinka tournament he was easily the best Canadian forward on the powerplay. If Hudon can somehow grow this season he should rise up the draft boards of NHL teams. 19. Thomas Wilson - RW - Plymouth Whalers (OHL) Despite the brutal wrist injury Wilson suffered which ended his rookie season, he fought through wearing a cast to get through the U17 Championships back in December and January in winning a gold medal.. Wilson shows this kind of heart consistently throughout league and international play. Due to his injury, Thomas had been off some radars, but he showed he was back in top form at the Ivan Hlinka. He has an outstanding drive and determination to his game. He throws some massive hits whenever he gets the chance. He shows the same kind of drive in all three zones, and takes pride in being a tough player to deal with in his own zone. 20. Andreas Athanasiou - LC - London Knights (OHL) Athanasiou is an extremely fast skater, easily one of the most explosive skaters with the puck. He has good hands, and can create offense when given any opportunity. He plays with that extra level of desire you see in the most successful players, and shows tremendous drive every shift. Athanasiou continues to progress to playing against top competition at a rapid rate. He can be a little bit soft at times, but quite frankly, it s less noticeable due to the fact that nobody can catch him. 21. Pontus Aberg - RW - Djurgarden J20 (SWE) Aberg has great awareness in the offensive zone and positions himself well. His best asset is his mobile skating ability which allows him to beat defenders down the wing. He is much more of a goal scorer than a playmaker. 22. Sebastian Collberg - RW - Frolunda (SWE) Collberg is a skater who generates solid top speed, and loves to have the puck on his stick. He ll shoot from all angles, and due to a very strong release, he is effective. Despite his size, he doesn t appear intimidated by contact, and has a great drive to his game. 23. Ville Pokka - RD - Karpat (FIN) Pokka rushes the puck up the ice extremely effectively. He fights off the opposition well, but sometimes holds onto the puck a little bit longer than he should. He is generally a very composed player, who handles being pressured very well. He is a good quick decision maker with the puck. He will jump up in the offense but generally recovers very well defensively. Pokka completes a very high percentage of his passes from all over the ice. He is not much of a physical player, but will engage when necessary. Pokka has a solid point shot and release on his one-timer. 24. Michael Matheson - LD Dubuque Fighting Saints (USHL) Matheson is a defenseman who is hard to get a good read on sometimes. He s a smooth skater, who rushes the puck, makes a smart first pass, and likes the move the puck around in the offensive zone. He isn t overly strong or physical but is smart and he makes good reads all over the ice. He can help his stock with a strong showing as he makes the jump into the [6]

USHL this season. 25. Mathew Campagna - LC - Sudbury Wolves (OHL) Campagna is highlighted by his impressive work ethic. Mathew is very smart positional player in all 3 zones and knows where he needs to be on the ice. Campagna thrives under situations where he needs to be in the corners or along the boards. He has a never quit attitude, and really has that extra level of desire that makes him successful. He is very good defensively, and would likely be an effective penalty killer at the NHL level due to his compete level, and awareness around the defensive aspect of the game. He has not been a dominant offensive player in the OHL yet, but we ve certainly plenty his offensive creativity in minor hockey. We believe he will continue to evolve in that part of the game. One of the only things that drops Campagna down our ranks is his 5 10 frame. 26. Matia Marcantuoni - RC - Kitchener Rangers (OHL) Marcantuoni is easily one of flashiest players available for the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. He has explosive speed, and he makes excellent moves cutting from outside to inside in his path to the net. His combination of speed, puck handling ability and elusiveness makes him extremely difficult to contain. He possesses this great speed while tipping the scale at close to 200lbs. While he possesses the speed game, we d like to see him show more physicality, and urgency around the defensive game. He can often try to do too much himself, and not utilize his line mates enough. We look for Matia to evolve into a smarter forward to better his draft stock. Poor decisions and having feet that move faster than his head are his weak spots as we start the 2011 season. 27. Martin Frk - RW - Halifax Mooseheads (QMJHL) Frk came into last season surrounded by a great deal of hype. He is a fairly inconsistent player who possesses a really nasty shot and he has the ability to pass the puck. He is an average skater at best skater and it isn t considered an asset to his game right now. He will protect the puck well, and does contribute along the boards and in his own end. There s the potential of a very talented player within Frk, but he will need to show it more consistently if he wants to remain in the top 30 as the season progresses. Skating NHL DRAFT 12 Brendan Gaunce Much like his older brother, Brendan is a smart hockey player. He competes all over the ice and is a power forward with fantastic playmaking ability. We love him. Mark Edwards - HockeyProspect.com [7]

issues will not help his draft stock. 28. Scott Laughton - LC - Oshawa Generals (OHL) Laughton is a player who isn t very flashy, he doesn t jump out at you, but when you watch him, you really appreciate the intelligence he possesses. He is very solidly positioned throughout the three zones, and just always seems to be exactly where he should be on the ice. Defensively he s shown good solid contributions, and is reliable on the back check. He has some untapped upside that we believe he hasn t fully explored yet. He will be in a tough situation again on a very strong Oshawa team where he will need to battle for ice time. 29. Gianluca Curcuruto - LD - Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (OHL) Curcuruto is a very slick skating puck moving defenseman, who isn t afraid to rush the puck as well. He displays solid mobility, and is calm under pressure. He does get a bit risky with his offensive jumps, but doesn t do so to the point where it s detrimental to the team success. He likes to move the puck around on the power play, but also has the ability to create scoring chances with his shot. Curcuruto is effective defensively. It is an area we d like to see him improve in, but it certainly gets a passing grade at this point in his development. 30. Phillip Di Giuseppe - LW - U. of Michigan (CCHA) Di Giuseppe is a very smooth skater who is extremely tough to contain once he gets moving down the wing. He has solid puck protection abilities using quick feet and is deadly jumping out of corners and off the wall. Phil has a strong quick release on his shot and he is deadly accurate. He displays a relentless effort in his game, working extremely hard and he will go into the dirty areas of the rink. His hockey sense is strong, and he anticipates plays very well. Di Giuseppe shows great effort in helping his team in the defensive area of the game as well. [8]

MATT DUMBA - DEFENSE his defensive play will need to improve, he jumps out of position either for a high risk play, or to deliver a hit too many times. Dumba will need to try and control this a little in favour of remaining a steady presence in his own zone while continuing to improve MATT DUMBA His defensive play will need to improve, he jumps out of position to deliver a hit Matt Dumba was selected 4th Overall by the Red Deer Rebels in the 2009 WHL Bantam Draft. He landed close to home coming from the Calgary Bronks AAA program. Dumba joined Edge prep school, before getting a taste of what the WHL has to offer with 8 games, two being playoff match-up s as a 15 year old. In Dumba got full time ice with the Red Deer Rebels, and faired very well. Mathew also excelled at the World U17 Hockey Challenge, where he finished the tournament as the leading scorer, playing for team Pacific. Dumba put up more goals than assists this past season, not a very common feat by a defenseman. Dumba possesses great skating ability, the technique needs a little adjustment, but the overall package is very solid. He gets a quick jump, and is able to generate a good top speed, particularly when skating down the wings. He really looks like a forward when driving down the wing with the puck on his stick, and has a quick and accurate release on his wrist shot. Dumba also has a solid point shot, which he is able to release fairly quickly. He moves the puck with respectable ability, and appears to choose the right times to take his shot. One of the biggest standout features about Mathew Dumba s play is his MATT DUMBA PRE-SEASON # 9 physicality. He is a very punishing defenseman, who despite being listed at only 165lbs. Has thrown some huge hits on some bigger opponents. He is equally effective throwing hits in open ice and along the boards. However he will occasionally leave his feet, and regularly put himself out of defensive positioning in order to connect with some of these hits. To go along with his physical play, he has shown complete willingness to drop the gloves whenever necessary, and has shown very well against guys bigger and stronger than him. Dumba is already built solid, going into next season he will hopefully add to his frame, and get even stronger. Also his defensive play will need to improve, he jumps out of position either for a high risk play, or to deliver a hit too many times. Dumba will need to try and control this a little in favour of remaining a steady presence in his own zone while continuing to improve his offensive contributions. Expect to see Dumba s role with the team increase greatly, and to be a leader and key contributor from the blueline. Mathew is a potential top 10 pick in this year s NHL Entry Draft, and is a player we see a great deal of upside in. [9]

MATT CAMPAGNA The Sudbury Wolves forward shows smarts all over the ice. Matthew Campagna came into his rookie season as a highly touted 16 year old after Sudbury selected the Mississauga native with the 5th overall selection in the 2010 OHL priority selection draft. But after an average start to the season, the pound center finished the season strong by getting better each and every game. Finishing the season with 25 points in 58 games, Campagna will look to increase his rookie point totals heading into the 2012 NHL entry draft, and keep the momentum he built in last spring s playoffs where he notched 5 points in 8 games. Campagna is a very skilled, highly creative forward who has above average skating and hockey IQ to go along with an impressive set of hands. The undersized forward can be considered a playmaking center that will more than likely use his teammates on the offensive attack. One of Campagna s season highlights occurred when he was selected to play for Team Ontario at the Under -17 Hockey Challenge last fall, where he won a gold medal. Campagna not only won a gold medal, but also became somewhat of a Youtube sensation after scoring an incredible penalty shot goal in the gold medal game against the United States. Campagna opened many eyes by showing incredible confidence, agility, and poise in such a high pressure situation. Fast forward to earlier this month where Campagna won his second gold medal in less than a year as part of Team Canada at the U-18 Ivan Hlinka Tournament. Campagna assisted on Team Canada s opening goal on their way to overtaking Sweden in the final game. Going into his draft year, Campagna will look to build off of his strong defensive game. Campagna was a monster when it came to points in his minor hockey days. In this, his draft season, he will need to post some point totals to remain a 1st round prospect. Another element Campagna can improve is shooting the puck more often when the opportunity arises. With only 7 goals last season, Campagna must learn to take advantage of his scoring opportunities when they arise instead of making that extra pass. All of these areas can be accomplished if Campagna keeps growing his confidence which has undoubtedly been aided by taking part in past events with Hockey Canada. By adding more strength, increasing his goal/point totals and taking on a greater role in Sudbury, Matthew Campagna should put himself in a position to be selected in the latter part of the first round of next June s NHL draft. [10]

Simon Larouche - HockeyProspect.com [11]

THE 2011 NHL RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CAMP RD - Cody Ceci - 6' lb. Ottawa (OHL) Ceci was consistently solid throughout the RDO Camp. Very physical, but timed it well, and didn't go over the top. Showed solid awareness in all three zones. Ceci had a huge one timer from the point. One member at the camp called him the toughest player to handle 1 on 1 defensively, and another called him the toughest player to handle 1 on 1 offensively, which shows the respect Ceci has gained among his peers. LW - Phillip DiGiuseppe - 5' lb. U. of Michigan (CCHA) Team white didn't have the amount of standout performances as team Black. However DiGuseppe likely had one of the best performances for Team White. A player that HP founder Mark Edwards knows well, having coached him 2 years ago, DiGiuseppe is a very smooth skater, and very tough to contain once he gets moving down the wing. He has solid puck protection abilities along the walls and uses his quick feet coming out of corners. Phil has a strong release on his shot. Phillip showed off relentless effort and was very effective in the corners and along the boards. DiGiuseppe appeared to see the ice very well and anticipated the play very well. It will be interesting to see how he progresses as a freshman at the University of Michigan. RW - Miles Koules - 5' lb. USA Under-18 (USHL) Really didn't stand out much, but his flashes of talent definitely came out in the offensive zone when he had the puck on his stick. Koules has an outstanding release on his shot and showed great accuracy. He did a nice job driving the net hard. RD - Mathew Dumba - 5' lb. Red Deer (WHL) Dumba didn't impress much in his first match-up, but in the second he became much more noticeable. Made solid plays 1 on 1 taking the body very effectively. He's very calm and composed with the puck under pressure. He also made an outstanding spin-o-rama move in the neutral zone, rush into the offensive zone, then set up a goal. When speaking with Dumba after the camp about his upcoming season in Red Deer, he told HockeyProspect I hope to continue to add some offensive flair, but also at the same time be in a position to help the penalty kill and contribute in defensive situations where I didn't really contribute much last year.
