Daily Clips 10/29/12 NHL lockout: No games? No pay? Just skate By Dave Molinari / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Today is the start of the work week for millions of people, including a few who aren't being paid for their labor. Some of whom are, in fact, paying for the right to practice their craft. Those would be the NHL players who have been locked out since mid-september but continue to rent ice time and conduct workouts to prepare for a season that might never happen. A group of Penguins, for example, have been skating at Southpointe almost every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday for the better part of two months. The sessions began, as they do most years, a few weeks before the scheduled opening of training camp, with the goal of preparing players for the preseason. Attendance at the Southpointe workouts crested in the mid-teens more than a month ago, and has fluctuated since. There's a core of a half-dozen or so guys who show up for virtually every session, but the turnout definitely has declined as autumn has progressed. "You see the number of guys who are still around, the crew is getting smaller and smaller every week," winger Pascal Dupuis, one of the regulars, said. "Guys are getting into camps, they're in and out of town." That group includes forwards Sidney Crosby, Chris Kunitz and James Neal, all of whom spent last week working out with other NHLers in Dallas but are expected to take part in the Southpointe sessions in coming days. If they show up, it could provide a spark for practices that, participants acknowledge, can get a bit tedious and stale on occasion. "Some days are better than others, but I'm sure that's like anybody going to work any day," said forward Craig Adams, the team's player representative. "You have good days and days when you're not quite as motivated."

Thursday, he added, was one of the latter. He characterized that on-ice workout, which featured seven Penguins and a number of local players recruited to make a full-ice scrimmage possible, as "just awful." It was, however, a coincidence that the next day's practice was called off, and a regular session is planned for this morning. Friday's cancellation aside, the Penguins have no immediate plans to discontinue their workouts, even though there's no indication the dispute that has prompted the league to cancel its schedule through Nov. 30 will be resolved anytime soon. "We don't have a time line, as far as when they're going to stop," center Joe Vitale said. "They're going to keep going, as long as we have enough guys here. We have enough guys with families and kids who will stick around, and who want to skate." Still, because participation in the Southpointe workouts is voluntary, there is no guarantee of how many guys will take part on a given day. That means those who do show up have to be prepared to adjust the on-ice agenda, based on turnout. "We've had some good days," Adams said. "You obviously have to tailor it to how many guys you have out there. I'm a big believer that whether you have two guys out there or 20, you can put in a good day's work and work on some things. "You just have to use your imagination and be smart about it and work hard and focus. Pretty much everything we didn't do [last Thursday]." That uncertainty about what participants can reasonably hope to accomplish going into a workout likely is a factor on those days when some are less enthused than usual about reporting to Southpointe. "You have to be honest, you have to be up front," Vitale said. "Some days are tougher, when you don't necessarily have a good game plan or you don't know how many guys are going to show up." Clearly, the Penguins who have been setting up their own workouts would prefer to be going through practices organized and overseen by coach Dan Bylsma and his staff, and to be preparing for games that were supposed to begin 2 1/2 weeks ago. That won't be the case, though, until the league and NHL Players' Association hammer out a new collective bargaining agreement. "I always tell people that what we're doing right now might be frustrating because we want to be playing," Adams said. "But we're still pretty lucky to be coming here every day and skating and going home and spending time with our families and stuff."

Upon further review, Bears down Pens Penguins lose for first time in three games as potential tying goal is disallowed. By TOM VENESKY HERSHEY The first goal review in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins history wiped out the gametying tally by Phil Dupuis during Sunday s matchup against the Hershey Bears. With the Penguins down 2-1 early in the third period, they appeared to tie it when the puck deflected through the crease where Dupuis was posted, and into the net. But after referee Darcy Burchell reviewed the play on video, he waved off the goal ruling that it was kicked in by Dupuis. Minutes later Hershey scored to go up 3-1 and eventually defeat the Penguins 3-2. While the call cost the Penguins a chance to tie things up, it didn t cost them the game. In this instance, the review process worked, according to Dupuis. I kicked it in with my skate, for sure. I tried to put it on my stick to put it in, but it ended up going straight off my skates, Dupuis said. That changed the game a little bit after that when they scored, but it was the right call. The loss was the only down note in an otherwise successful weekend for the Penguins, during which they won two out of three. Still, nothing would ve been better than to cap the weekend with a win against the rival Bears. It sucks, Dupuis said. It was the last game, it s against a rival team. We re going to have to spend the entire week thinking about this game. Dupuis said that the team lacked the zip it had on Saturday night when it beat the Crunch in Syracuse. That was evident in the first period when the Penguins managed eight shots but not many legitimate scoring chances. Hershey scored twice in the second period including a shorthanded tally after Zach Hamill stripped Brian Dumoulin of the puck inside the blueline and raced down to the other end for a goal. Adam Payerl made it 2-1 in the second period when he scored his first goal as a pro on a wrist shot from the top of the right faceoff circle.

The Penguins offense clicked a little better in the third period as it outshot Hershey 6-1, but a few disruptions got in the way. First, it was the disallowed goal followed by Hershey s third tally less than two minutes later. Both teams had to have a response at the end of that (disallowed goal), Penguins coach John Hynes said. They handled it better than we did. At the midway point, Trevor Smith was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct after he cross-checked Hershey defenseman Tomas Kundratek into the end boards. The Penguins prevented Hershey from scoring on the power play and answered with a manadvantage goal of their own by Eric Tangradi to make it 3-2, but that was all they could muster. We were hanging in there, getting opportunities to score and get ourselves going, Hynes said. We created enough opportunities to win the game, but we didn t finish. After winning two-of-three this weekend, the Penguins are now We had a fairly good weekend in the fact we were able to get some wins, Hynes said. We definitely got better as a team. Tonight was disappointing, not in the fact that we didn t get a win, but the opportunity was there for us and we didn t finish. Video review gives victory to Bears By Jonathan Bombulie (Staff Writer) Published: October 29, 2012 HERSHEY - Score one for the men in stripes. The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins had a goal waved off due to video review for the first time in team history Sunday night at the Giant Center and, by all accounts, it was the right call, helping the Hershey Bears to a 3-2 victory. With the Penguins trailing 2-1 about three minutes into the third period, Beau Bennett sent a centering pass from the right-wing corner to Phil Dupuis at the top of the crease. Dupuis kicked the puck toward the pads of Dany Sabourin, then tried to get a stick on it before it crossed the goal line, which would have made it a legal play.

On the ice, the officials tentatively signaled a good goal, then immediately went to the scorer's table to review the video. After about a minute of deliberation, referee Darcy Burchell waved the goal off. "I'm glad we have replay now," Sabourin said. The AHL is using instant replay on controversial goals for the first time in its history this season. After the game, Dupuis said the right call was made. "I kicked it with my skate, for sure," he said. "I tried to put it on my stick to put it in, but it ended up going in straight off my skate. I think it was the right call, but at the same time, if there's no goal review, that would have been good. â It sucks, but it was the right call." The opportunistic Bears needed less than two minutes after the waved-off goal to take a 3-1 lead. Matt Beaudoin gathered a puck behind the net and centered to Ryan Stoa for a goal at 4:39. "Both teams had to have a response," coach John Hynes said. "They handled it better than we did in that situation." The Penguins got back within a goal with 5:26 left in the game when Eric Tangradi shuffled in the rebound of a Benn Ferriero power-play shot off the end boards, but they never found the equalizer. "We were hanging in there," Hynes said. "We were hanging around. We were getting opportunities to score. We were trying to get ourselves going, which is a positive sign. The unfortunate thing is we didn't finish the chances that we had." The Penguins have given up the first goal in each of their last six games, and Sunday was no different. Mike Carman backhanded a rebound of his own shot on the first shift of the second period to give the Bears a 1-0 advantage. In their previous two outings, against Rochester on Friday and at Syracuse on Saturday, the Penguins tied the score 1-1 and went on to win the game. On Sunday, Hershey scored again to make it 2-0. With the Penguins on a power play in the middle of the second period, an Alex Grant pass kicked off Brian Dumoulin's skates at the left point and sent Zach Hamill streaking up the right wing. His shot found a corner at 13:29.

The Penguins quickly answered when Adam Payerl scored his first pro goal on a shot from the right half-wall less than two minutes later to make it 2-1, but in a lot of ways, the damage had already been done. The Penguins had to play the last 39 minutes of the game - except for the few moments before Dupuis' potential game-tying goal was waved off - from behind. "It's against a rival team and we want to win those games," Dupuis said. "It sucks we're going to have to spend a week thinking about this game." WHL: FRANKO HAS FOUR POINTS TO HELP ROCKETS BEAT HITMEN The Canadian Press Zach Franko had two goals and an assist Sunday as the Kelowna Rockets downed the Calgary Hitmen 4-1 in the Western Hockey League. The 19-year-old forward now has nine goals in 14 games, which has him in a three-way tie for the team lead with Colton Sissons and Myles Bell. Dylen McKinlay and Sissons also scored for the Rockets (8-6-2), who wrapped up their fourgame road trip though Alberta with a record. Brendan Hurley scored the lone goal for the Hitmen (8-4-3), who have lost three straight games and four of their past five. Kelowna goaltender Jordon Cooke made 21 saves to record the win, while Calgary's Mack Shields stopped 25 shots in defeat. Neither team recorded a power-play goal as the Rockets went 0-for-3 and the Hitmen went 0- for-6. Elsewhere in the WHL it was: Edmonton 5, Vancouver 1; Medicine Hat 3, Moose Jaw 2 (OT); Portland 6, Tri-City 0; and Kamloops 4, Seattle 3 (OT).

At Calgary, although they were outshot 8-3 in the opening period, the Hitmen led 1-0 on Hurley's first goal of the season. But Franko and McKinlay scored goals 62 seconds apart in the second period to give the Rockets a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes of play. Franko added an insurance goal in the third period and Sissons rounded out the scoring with an empty-net goal. Oil Kings 5, Giants 1 At Edmonton, T.J. Foster and Michael St. Croix each had a goal and an assist and Tristan Jarry made 29 saves as the Oil Kings (9-3-3) beat Vancouver (3-10-0) for their fourth straight victory. Tigers 3, Warriors 2 (OT) At Moose Jaw, Sask., Dylan Bredon scored at 1:13 of overtime as Medicine Hat (8-8-1) got past Moose Jaw (7-6-3). Winterhawks 6, Americans 0 At Portland, Ore., Mac Carruth made 15 saves for his second shutout in four games as the Winterhawks (9-3-1) downed Tri-City (9-6-2). Blazers 4, Thunderbirds 3 (OT) At Kent, Wash., Colin Smith scored 25 seconds into overtime as Kamloops (15-0-1) defeated Seattle (7-5-1). OHL: GALCHENYUK HAS THREE POINTS AS STING BEAT BATTALION

The Canadian Press Alexander Galchenyuk scored once and setup two more Sunday as the Sarnia Sting downed the host Brampton Battalion 4-1 in the Ontario Hockey League. The 18-year-old has produced four goals and 12 points in his last eight outings and now has eight goals and 21 points in 15 games, good for a tie for fifth in OHL scoring. Reid Boucher had a goal and an assist for the Sting (8-6-1), who have won three straight games, while Brett Hargrave and Nickolas Latta scored a goal apiece. Blake Clarke scored the lone goal for the Battalion (5-6-5), who have lost three in a row. Brodie Barrick made 30 saves for the win. Jake Smith stopped 11-of-14 shots in a losing cause. Sarnia went 1-for-3 on the power play while Brampton capitalized on one of four opportunities with the man advantage. The win was Sarnia's first in Brampton since the season. Elsewhere in the OHL, it was: Mississauga 3, Sudbury 2 (SO); Sault Ste. Marie 6, Guelph 2; Owen Sound 5, Windsor 2; Peterborough 3, Oshawa 2 (SO); and Kitchener 2, Plymouth 1. At Brampton, Ont., Latta opened the scoring 10:21 into the game, converting on a Nikolay Goldobin pass and firing a shot by Smith. Boucher made it 2-0 on the power play just over a minute later, firing a quick shot from the slot. Clarke cut the deficit to one on the power play with a little over six minutes remaining in the second period. But Galchenyuk made it 3-1 with eight minutes to play in the third, beating Smith blocker side, before Hargrave rounded out the scoring with an empty-net goal in the final minute. Steelheads 3, Wolves 2 (SO) At Mississauga, Ont., Dylan DeMelo scored in regulation and once more in the shootout as the Steelheads (9-4-1) edged Sudbury (7-8-1) for their third win in a row.

Greyhounds 6, Storm 2 At Guelph, Ont., Colin Miller had two goals and an assist as Sault Ste. Marie (9-7-0) crushed the Storm (10-4-1). Attack 5, Spitfires 2 At Owen Sound, Ont., Joseph Blandisi scored twice and set up one more and Jordan Binnington made 36 saves as the Attack (10-2-2) beat Windsor (7-6-3) to regain first in the Midwest Division. Petes 3, Generals 2 (SO) At Oshawa, Ont., Franic Menard scored once in regulation and added the shootout winner and Michael Giugovaz made 45 saves as Peterborough (4-7-3) slipped past the Generals (9-5-2). Rangers 2, Whalers 1 At Kitchener, Ont., John Gibson turned aside 37 shots and Justin Bailey's goal three minutes into the third period was the difference as the Rangers (8-4-2) edged Plymouth (7-4-3). QMJHL: STRAKA'S FOUR POINTS LEAD DRAKKAR PAST TIGRES The Canadian Press Petr Straka scored twice and assisted on two more as the Baie-Comeau Drakkar downed the visiting Victoriaville Tigres 4-1 on Sunday in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action.

The 20-year-old forward has scored eight times in his last six outings and he now has 11 total goals in 11 games, which puts him top 10 in QMJHL scoring. Felix Girard and Raphael Bussieres had a goal and two assists apiece for the Drakkar (9-4-2), who have earned at least one point in seven straight contests. Mathieu Ayotte scored the lone goal for the Tigres (7-6-3), who had their four-game winning streak halted. Baie-Comeau's Philippe Cadorette made 27 saves for the win while Victoriaville's Guillaume Decelles took the loss after allowing two goals on five shots in the first five minutes of the game. Brandon Whitney stopped 30-of-32 shots in 55 minutes of relief. The Drakkar went 1-for-7 on the power play while the Tigres failed to score on five chances with the man advantage. Elsewhere in the QMJHL, it was: Saint John 3, Chicoutimi 2 (OT); Halifax 7, P.E.I. 3; Quebec 2, Gatineau 1; and Rouyn-Noranda 8, Rimouski 3. At Baie-Comeau, Que., Straka opened the scoring at 3:15 of the first period. Bussieres make it 2-0 for the Drakkar with a power-play goal at 5:01, however Ayotte responded for Victoriaville at 6:35. Girard restored a two-goal lead for Baie-Comeau at 10:35. After a scoreless second period, Straka added one more goal for the Drakkar at 10:06 of the third period. Sea Dogs 3 Sagueneens 2 (OT) At Saint John, N.B., Marcus Cuomo scored with 10 seconds remaining in the third period to force overtime and Oliver Cooper scored the winning goal 1:56 into extra time as the Sea Dogs (8-7-0) slipped past Chicoutmi (6-8-3), which are losers of five straight matches. Mooseheads 7 Rocket 3

At Halifax, six Mooseheads' players recorded a multi-point game including Matthew Boudreau, who scored twice, as Halifax (15-1-0) won its 13th straight game by beating P.E.I. (10-5-1). Remparts 2 Olympiques 1 At Quebec City, Marc-Antoine Carrier scored the winning goal at 11:32 of the third period and Francois Brassard stopped 22 shots as the Remparts (12-3-0) edged Gatineau (5-9-1) for their third win in their last four outings. Huskies 8 Oceanic 3 At Rouyn-Noranda, Que., Cody Donaghey and Redgie Bois each scored twice as the Huskies (12-3-1) won their fourth game in a row by downing Rimouski (9-6-2).
