12 softball amber jackson When Amber Jackson rewrote the Maryland record books in her lone season in the program in 2007 and moved on to a professional career with the Washington Glory, Terrapin fans wondered what she would do for an encore. After all, she had recorded the greatest offensive season in school history and cemented her status among the Terrapin legends with a pair of All-America selections by Easton and the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). Jackson, however, was just getting started. Playing professionally against the greatest softball talent in America, she proved that she has no equal. The former Maryland shortstop was named Player of the Year for the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) league after she dominated the league in the summer of 2007 after leaving College Park. Jackson led the league in several offensive categories, including home runs (15), RBIs (38) and slugging percentage (.814). She was also second in the league with a batting average of.372. Most important, she led the Glory to an NPF League Championship in the team s inaugural season. Jackson s performance might have shocked a league dominated by former and current Olympians, but it was a familiar site to Coach Laura Watten and Jackson s former Maryland teammates. As a both a player and a person, she is someone who is dedicated to being the best she can be, and she never settles for less than perfection, said Watten. In her lone season at Maryland after transferring from Bethune-Cookman College, Jackson compiled an impressive list of accolades following a standout senior season. She tied for acc softball History of the ACC The Atlantic Coast Conference was founded on May 8, 1953, at the Sedgefield Inn near Greensboro, N.C., with seven charter members - Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest - drawing up the conference bylaws. The withdrawal of seven schools from the Southern Conference came early on the morning of May 8, 1953, during the Southern Conference s annual spring meeting. On June 14, 1953, the seven members met in Raleigh, N.C., where a set of bylaws was adopted and the name officially became the Atlantic Coast Conference. Suggestions from fans for the name of the new conference appeared in the region s newspapers prior to the meeting in Raleigh. Some of the names suggested were: Dixie, Mid South, Mid Atlantic, East Coast, Seaboard, Colonial, Tobacco, Blue-Gray, Piedmont, Southern Seven and the Shoreline. Duke s Eddie Cameron recommended that the name of the conference be the Atlantic Coast Conference, and the motion was passed unanimously. The meeting concluded with each member institution assessed $200 to pay for conference expenses. On December 4, 1953, conference officials met again at Sedgefield and officially admitted the University of Virginia as the league s eighth member. The first, and only, withdrawal of a school from the ACC came on June 30, 1971, when the University of South Carolina tendered its resignation. The ACC operated with seven members until April 3, 1978, when the Georgia Institute of Technology was admitted. The Atlanta school had withdrawn from the Southeastern Conference in January of The ACC expanded to nine members on July 1, 1991, with the addition of Florida State University. On June 30, 2003, conference membership increased to 11 with the announcement that the University of Miami and Virginia Tech had accepted invitations to join the league beginning in the year. Boston College was officially welcomed to the league on Oct. 17, 2003 and entered for the year. the NCAA lead in home runs, blasting 24 homers in 58 contests, an average of 0.41 per game. In four seasons at the Division I level, she was an All-America selection every year. Jackson finished her career as the 12th player in NCAA history to record 300 hits, score 200 runs and steal 100 bases. Jackson led the Terrapins in 11 offensive categories, and her 2007 campaign set new Maryland single-season records with 24 home runs, 56 RBIs, and 55 walks. Her.408 batting average shattered the previous season high of.359, which teammate Jenny Belak set in Her home run total tied the ACC single season record. She also ranked third nationally in both walks per game (.95) and slugging percentage (.949), 10th with.67 stolen bases per game and 11th in runs per game with The shortstop led the ACC in six offensive categories, and was named to the All-ACC first team for her accomplishments. Jackson also proved to more than just a power hitter. She stole an incredible 39 bases in 2007, a number that remains good enough for third on the Maryland career list. She was also a defensive ace, who frequently made highlight-reel plays look routine. At the Palm Springs Classic, Jackson turned an incredible five unassisted double plays on the day, with two against UCLA and three against the Loyola Marymount. Jackson's professional softball career continued to progress during 2008, as she finished amount the league leaders in home runs yet again en route to leading the Glory to a berth in the 2008 NPF Championship Series.
