7 UMass Lowell Hockey Game Notes 40-Point Plateau Riley Wetmore (39) and Scott Wilson (38) are both perched on the doorstep of the 40-point plateau. UMass Lowell hasn t had a 40-point scorer since , when Elias Godoy scored 18 goals and 23 assists during his 41 point sophomore season. And the Winner is... UMass Lowell won two of the three major awards presented by the Hockey East Association each season. First-year head coach Norm Bazin was named the Bob Kullen Coach of the Year and freshman forward Scott Wilson was tabbed as the Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Year. Bazin is the third coach in program history to each the leaguewide honor, joining Billy Riley (1988) and Bruce Crowder (1994, 1996). Riley coached Bazin as a freshman with the then-named Chiefs in , while Crowder coached Bazin for his final three seasons. Wilson is the fourth River Hawk to win the Hockey East Rookie of the Year award, joining the likes of Peter Vetri in 2005, Greg Koehler in 1997 and Greg Bullock in Four for 30 The trio of Riley Wetmore (39), Scott Wilson (38), Derek Arnold (34) and Matt Ferreira (31) have all eclipsed the 30-point barrier this season. The last time UMass Lowell featured four 30-point scorers in a single season was when Ed McGrane (37), Ron Hainsey (36), Laurent Meunier (34) and Brad Rooney (34) were lighting the lamp. That group of McGrane, Hainser, Meunier and Rooney reached the Hockey East Semifinals after defeating New Hampshire in three games in the Quarterfinals. The River Hawks lost game one (2-4) to the Wildcats, but won games two (2-1) and three (2-1). First Period Barometer In UMass Lowell s 24 wins, it has outscored opponents (+23) in the first period and are when leading after one. However, in their losses the River Hawks are being outscored 4-15 (-11) and when trailing after the first 20 minutes. Wilson s a Rookie? Freshman forward Scott Wilson has scored 38 points through 36 games of his rookie campaign, an unusually high pace for UMass Lowell freshmen in recent years. In the last two seasons, no River Hawk rookie has scored more than 15 points in his debut season. Current senior David Vallorani was the last to surpass that mark, scoring 27 points during his freshman campaign in Wilson recently cleared Laurent Meunier s 33-point (10g, 23a) rookie season in and Greg Koehler s 36-point (16g, 20a) freshman season in Wilson is still well behind the performance of freshman sensation Greg Bullock who scored 59 points (24g, 35a) as a rookie. Bullock is also the last freshman to lead the River Hawks in scoring. For the spectacular start to his collegiate career, Wilson has been named the Hockey East Rookie of the Year and the Rookie of the Week five times (Nov. 7, Nov. 14, Jan. 23, Feb. 6 and Feb. 20). Uncharted Territory First-year head coach Norm Bazin has guided the River Hawks to 19 more victories than last season. That margin of +19 is the largest turnaround by a first-year head coach in Division I hockey history. The previous record was held by Ric Schafer, who guided Notre Dame to 17 more wins that its previous season in Bazin also has the River Hawks as one of the three largest turnarounds in any season of Division I hockey. The River Hawks are tied with Notre Dame for the second spot, who had a +19 in Wisconsin set the all-time record with 25 more victories than the previous year in In Good Company River Hawk freshman Scott Wilson scored 12 goals in league play this season, tied with Boston College s rookie sensation Johnny Gaudreau. The duos 12 goals are the most by a freshman in Hockey East play since Nick Bonino in In the last five years, six Hockey East freshmen have scored 10 or more goals in league play: Bonino, Tyler McNeely, Wade MacLeod, Michael Pereira, Gaudreau and Wilson. Among that group, Wilson is the only player to win the Hockey East Rookie of the Year award. Home Is Where The Hawk Is... UMass Lowell has clinched home ice in the Hockey East playoffs for the first time since In , Blaise MacDonald s first season behind the bench, UMass Lowell finished with a record in league play. The River Hawks defeated Northeastern in the quarterfinals at the Tsongas Center, two games to one, and then fell to New Hampshire (L, 4-3) in the semifinals at the Fleet Center. In all, UMass Lowell has previously hosted a home playoff game in six seasons: (4th seed), (2nd seed), (2nd seed), (3rd seed), (4th seed) and (2nd seed). Consecutive Games Played Senior forward David Vallorani has played in 148 consecutive games, having never missed a game in his collegiate career. He is one of two active River Hawks with more than 100 games played. With his collegiate career coming to a close, Vallorani could play up to three more contests, which would put him in UMass Lowel s 150 club. Currently there are only three members of the River Hawks 150 games played club: Jon Morris (153), Jeff Daw (157) and Christian Sbrocca (158). The next closest streak is 110 games by junior Riley Wetmore, who has also played in every game of his collegiate career. 20-Win Seasons UMass Lowell has recorded its first 20-win season since , when the River Hawks reached the Hockey East Championship game. Since elevating the program to Division I, UMass Lowell has now recorded nine 20-win seasons. In those nine seasons, the River Hawks have reached the Hockey East Semifinals five times, the Hockey East Finals twice and the NCAA Tournament four times. In addition, UMass Lowell s head coach has been named the Hockey East Coach of the Year in three of the nine seasons. In all, UMass Lowell has win seasons in the history of its hockey program, dating back to the team s origins in Positive Impact Adjusting to the pace of play at the collegiate level can be difficult for rookies, but UMass Lowell currently has two freshmen with a plus-minus rating of +10 or better: Terrence Wallin (+15) and Scott Wilson (+13). In the last decade, only two River Hawk rookies have finished the season with a plus-minus rating of +10 or better: Kelly Sullivan in (+11) and Baptiste Amar in (+10). Walter Brown Award Doug Carr was named one of 21 semi-finalists for the 60th Walter Brown Award, presented by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston. Carr is one of four underclassmen to crack the list. As recently as , UMass Lowell s then-senior Kory Falite was named a semi-finalst as well, but no River Hawk has ever won the Walter Brown Award. Match Maker By the numbers, the Feb. 17 contest between #2 Boston University and #6 UMass Lowell (L, 7-4) was the best match-up in Tsongas Center history. Prior to that, the best match-up in the Tsongas Center (which opened in 1998) was a tie between #6 Boston University vs. #7 UMass Lowell on Dec. 1, 2001 (W, 3-2) and #4 Boston University vs. #9 UMass Lowell on Oct. 30, 2009 (L, 5-4).

March Edition Part II March Playing its last Division II game, ULowell beats Babson 5-3 in the consolation game of the NCAA Tournament at the Tully Forum to finish the year The Chiefs, coming off four ECAC Division II and three NCAA titles in a five-year period, move into Division I the next season. Senior center Mike Carr scores twice and wins his second ECAC Division II scoring crowd with 35 goals and 39 assists for 74 points and finishes his career as the school s all-time leading scorer with 134 goals and 145 assists for 279 points. Senior Steve Arnold finishes his career with a 19- game scoring streak, during which he amassed 21 goals and 22 assists for 43 points ULowell, making its first appearance in the NCAA Division I Tournament, is walloped 7-1 by host Wisconsin in the first game of a twogame, total-goals quarterfinal series in Madison, Wis. The Badgers knock the Chiefs out of the tournament 24 hours later Once-beaten and top-seeded Maine comes from behind to beat fourth-seeded UMass Lowell 7-5 in the Hockey East Tournament semifinals at Boston Garden. The Black Bears go on to win the Hockey East and NCAA Championships with a record Top-seeded Boston University edges second-seeded UMass Lowell 3-2 at Boston Garden to win the Hockey East Tournament s Lamoriello Trophy. River Hawks goalie Dwayne Roloson, the league s Player of the Year, is named the tournament s MVP. March ULowell explodes for six unanswered second-period goals and breezes past Plattsburgh State 6-1 in front of a sellout crowd at the Tully Forum and a national TV audience in a rematch for the NCAA Division II championship as the Chiefs capture the national title for the second straight year and third time in four years. Roger Christian scores two goals, and Mike Carr sets up three. Coach Bill Riley s Chiefs, who had beaten Plattsburgh 5-4 in the championship game the previous year, finish the season with a 31-4 record. Carr ends his career as the top scorer in school history with 134 goals, 145 assists, and 279 points in just 121 games. Junior right wing Ken Kaiser is the ECAC Division II scoring champion with 32 goals and 48 assists for 80 points. Senior John MacKenzie leads the division s goalies with a 2.56 GA average Senior center Bill Dohaney (Donnie) scores a goal and sets up the other three as ULowell battles Wisconsin to a 4-4 stalemate in the second game of their two-game, total-goals quarterfinal series in the NCAA Hockey Tournament. But the Badgers win on total goals 11-5 and advance to the NCAA semifinals. Center Jon Morris ends his career as the second-highest scorer in Lowell history with 97 goals and 134 assists for 231 points in 153 games Senior Dave Pensa records his second hat trick of the season, and Mike Murray scores the winning goal 4:03 into overtime as UMass Lowell beats New Hampshire 5-4 in the consolation game of the Hockey East Tournament at Boston Garden. Junior left wing Shane Henry picks up his 100th career point. The River Hawks finish the year with a record, their first winning season in five years Sophomore center Greg Koehler (Keeler) scores his 20th goal of the season, but sixth-seeded Maine upsets fifth-seeded UMass Lowell 6-2 in the semifinals of the Hockey East Tournament at the FleetCenter in Boston Sophomore Scott Campbell scores a power-play goal with the goalie pulled to tie the game with 19.9 seconds remaining in regulation, and junior Chris Auger nets the game-winner three minutes into suddendeath overtime as 19th-ranked UMass Lowell stuns fifth-ranked Northeastern 3-2 in the semifinals of the Hockey East Tournament at Boston Garden. It is the fifth time that season the River Hawks have scored with their goalie out of the nets. Campbell has two of the goals. March Junior goalie Nevin Hamilton makes 31 saves but 19th-ranked and fifth-seeded UMass Lowell loses 1-0 to second-ranked and topseeded Boston University in the championship game of the Hockey East Tournament at Boston Garden. March Senior defenseman Dave Barozzino turns the hat trick as UMass Lowell beats seventh-ranked Michigan State 6-2 in the first round of the West Regional of the NCAA Tournament in East Lansing, Michigan. Senior right wing Christian Sbrocca ties Shane Henry s Division I school record by passing out an assist for the 10th straight game. Sbrocca would break the record in the next game. March Colorado College, the nation s top-ranked team, beats UMass Lowell 5-3 in the second round of the West Regional of the NCAA Tournament at East Lansing, Mich. Senior right wing Christian Sbrocca passes out an assist for the 11th consecutive game, a record for Division I players at the school. He had 16 assists during the streak. He also ends his college career riding a 19-game scoring streak, during which he had 8 goals and 26 assists for 34 points. The River Hawks finish the year with a record, setting a Division I high for victories. March Seventh-ranked UMass Lowell kills off eight of nine Michigan State power plays and beats the ninth-ranked Spartans 4-3 on their home ice in the first round of the NCAA West Regional in East Lansing, Michigan. The weary River Hawks, however, lose to Minnesota 2-1 in double overtime the next day. UMass Lowell finishes with a record, the first time the program has won 25 games in its 11-year Division I history. March A weary UMass Lowell team, clinging to a 1-0 lead, is less than six minutes away from a berth in the Frozen Four when a well-rested Minnesota team ties the score and sends the game into overtime. The fifth-ranked Golden Gophers finally beat All-American goalie Dwayne Roloson 9:29 into the second overtime to win the game 2-1 in East Lansing, Mich. The 89:29 game is the longest in school history. Roloson made 45 saves.
