21 Cradle of Coaches In collegiate athletics, each school has its own certain niche by which it is known throughout the country. However, no tradition is quite as unique as the Cradle of Coaches at Miami University. At last count, more than 100 Miami graduates were active in coaching or administrative work in the collegiate or professional ranks. The list of Miami graduates in the scholastic ranks totals more than 500. College football luminaries such as Woody Hayes, Bo Schembechler, Ara Parseghian and John Pont used Miami as a training ground, as did professional coaching greats like Weeb Ewbank, Paul Brown and Sid Gillman. In baseball, Miami s most successful graduate was Walter Smokey Alston, a former manager of the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers. Alston was a three-year letterman at Miami from He played shortstop and also lettered three years in basketball. Upon graduation, Alston signed a minor-league contract with the St. Louis Cardinals, where he hit 25 or more homers four times in his minor-league career. Alston was a player-coach in the Smokey Alston minors from The Dodgers hired him in 1954, and he maintained the helm for 23 years. During that time, he led the Dodgers to seven National League pennants and four World Series Championships. A native of nearby Darrtown, Ohio, Alston is a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y., and a charter member of the Miami Athletic Hall of Fame. He was also Miami s honorary baseball coach in Alston once said of his Miami experience, The most important part of my Miami experience has been my association and friendships with the coaches, trainers, teachers, students and others connected with the University. I m proud of Miami s tradition, growth and continued success. He once compared his Miami years to the second stage of a space rocket. The college experience provides the extra boost that enables one to be propelled toward a better life in orbit. Miami has two coaches currently active in the professional ranks. Bill Doran is a coach with the Cincinnati Reds and Scott Steinmann is a coach in the Seattle Mariners organization. Miami Hall of Famer John Shoemaker is involved in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization while Tim Naehring is an advanced scout for the New York Yankees. In the collegiate ranks, Danny Hall is the head coach at Georgia Tech and his assistant Tom Kinkelaar also played at Miami. Tracy Smith and Ty Neal are currently coaching at Indiana University, while Zach Schmidt is an assistant at Xavier and Jeremy Ison has returned to Miami and is in his fifth season as an assistant coach. Rick Rembielak was the head coach at Wake Forest for five years from The below list of former Miami baseball players are currently involved with baseball at the professional or collegiate level.
