summer training programs INNOVATIVE Hockey s Total Skill Development (TSD) Camps provide the committed player the opportunity to improve his or her game throughout the year. Our 2010 Summer Training Programs menu is listed on the following pages: Pre Tryout TSD Camp April 6 10, hrs On Ice (5 1.5 hr. sessions) River Oaks Arena Oakville Prepare for upcoming selection camps in intense, game like situations Focus on superior skating techniques & puck handling skills Pre Season TSD Camp August 16 20, hrs On Ice / 5 hrs. Off Ice River Oaks Arena Oakville This camp features intense, high level, tactical development and individual high tempo skill training This program focuses on the individual skills of skating, shooting, passing and puck control. Morning & afternoon sessions include 2 hours on ice and 1 hour off ice training circuit to ensure each student is ready for the season ahead INNOVATIVE Hockey Tutoring 4
high performance academy May 5 June 24, weeks/12 sessions in total (alt. Weds./Tues. & Thurs.) River Oaks Arena Oakville The High Performance Academy is an intensive 8 week, 12 session program (alt. Weds./Tues. & Thurs.) focusing on the skill areas of the game and improving each player s mastery of these skills by training with quality repetitions under the watchful eye of professional instructors. Using the Hockey Canada Long Term Player Development (LTPD) model, the HP Academy will provide: Individual skills development that players simply do not have the opportunity to work on with their teams during season Focus on stride, explosiveness, edges, agility, balance, speed and quickness Creative puck control, including pulls, fakes, dekes, puck protection and evasive skating & puck handling techniques Enhanced small area games to provide 'game like' environment to re enforce practice skills and quick decision making INNOVATIVE Hockey Tutoring 5
specialty services Individual Player & Small Group Solutions INNOVATIVE Hockey Tutoring is available to work with players on an individual basis. We work with these players to develop the specific parts of the game that each individual player seeks to improve upon. We are also able to provide small group training. Working in groups of three to four players, we can provide customized training solutions and extensive individual attention and coaching. Team Sessions We offer team training sessions at the highest level, concentrating on individual skill development or on team concept game situations. Through Team Training sessions, we are able to address individual skill development needs designed for the age and level of the players. INNOVATIVE Hockey Tutoring 6
vgt model INNOVATIVE Hockey Tutoring also uses the VGT (Variable Goals Training) model created by Czech coaches Ludek Bukac Sr. and Ludek Bukac Jr. In VGT Training multiple hockey goals are placed in different positions within small areas of the ice in a way that challenges players technically while giving them the options and the freedom to make creative decisions. The goals act like imaginary opponents that the player has to beat. This is an innovative way to challenge young hockey players to stimulate their read and react skills and puck handling creativity under authentic game like conditions. Players love the opportunity to compete, to be creative and to improve their individual skills. The drills provide an environment where players will stretch beyond their comfort level. The drills are short of duration and high intensity which is very game like. INNOVATIVE Hockey Tutoring 7
player development guidelines Considerations for Development Following are some general observations of youth sports as stated in Hockey Canada s Long Term Player Development (LTPD) model: Young athletes under train, over compete; Low training to competition ratios in early years Training in early years focuses on outcomes (winning) rather than processes (optimal training) Poor training between 6 16 years of age cannot be fully corrected (athletes will never reach genetic potential) Basically it takes 10,000 hours or 10,000 repetitions to master a skill. This is the foundation for all INNOVATIVE Hockey programs INNOVATIVE Hockey Tutoring 8
chl coaches questionnaire In 2006, Hockey Canada asked Canadian Hockey League team personnel to complete a questionnaire on player development which included the following questions and responses: In order of importance, please list the top three skills that minor hockey coaches and their players should put emphasis on in order for players to advance into "higher" hockey categories. Most Common Answers: Skating Puck Handling.. 8 Passing.. 6 Skill. 5 Hockey Sense/Think Game/Game Knowledge on 1. 2 Shooting 2 Skills are the focus in all INNOVATIVE Hockey programs Here are a few responses in their assessment of which specific skill related deficiencies do bantam and midget players most exhibit? Passing skills, Puck skills, Skating and Hockey Sense 17 TEAMS STATED THESE 4 AREAS Hockey Sense They're too structured. Play too much like robots. Too much emphasis put on systems and winning and not enough on skills and creativity and learning about details that happen throughout the game. Puck skills: 1. passing, 2. shooting, 3. stick handling, 4. think at full speed. Overall skating (agility, quickness), puck handling, passing. INNOVATIVE Hockey Tutoring 9
long term player development Learning to Train Atom Program 9 10 year olds Peewee Program year olds Learn overall sports skills. One of the most important periods of motor development for children is between the ages of 9 and 12. This is a window of accelerated adaptation to motor coordination. At this stage, children are developmentally ready to acquire the general sports skills that are the cornerstones of all athletic development. Hockey Canada recommends that players in the Learning to Train stage continue to focus on the development and refinement of individual skills and individual tactics. Upwards of 70% of training should be dedicated to individual skills and tactics in this stage. Train to Train Bantam year olds Midget year olds Begin to consolidate the basic technical Skills of the Game Increased focus on hockey with a reduction in the number of other sports played to 1 2 Introduction and development of Advanced Group Tactics and Team Tactics Depending on player introduce other activities into physical preparation and being to develop a solid base for general physical preparation Develop basic psychological attributes: concentration, activation, visualization, relaxation, positive internal dialogue Develop training routines to complement the main part of the ice session: warm up, hydration, cool down, nutrition, etc. INNOVATIVE Hockey Tutoring 10
