Over The Weekend The Falcons lost to Ohio State Friday night, falling to the Buckeyes by a score of 1-0. The Falcons were held scoreless for the first time this season, while freshman goaltender Tommy Burke (1-2-0) stopped a career high 27-of-28 shots in the loss. Both teams were held off the board with the man advantage, with the Falcons going 0-for-5, and Ohio State going 0-for-3. The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team tied Ohio State, 3-3, Saturday night, eventually defeating the Buckeyes in a CCHA shootout. Rusty Hafner, Mark Cooper and Brett Mohler scored in regulation, while freshman Tommy Burke stopped 21-of-24 shots. Similar to Friday s contest, both teams were held scoreless on the power play. The Buckeyes and Falcons were both 0-for-2 in the game. Shootout Win The Falcons shootout win Saturday night was the third shootout win against Ohio State in the last four meetings, all occurring at the BGSU Ice Arena. The Falcons and Buckeyes skated to a 2-2 and 1-1 tie last season, both resulting in shootout wins for BG. The Falcons have now failed to defeat Ohio State in regulation in 13-straight games, dating back to Feb. 1, First Time, Long Time Sophomore Rusty Hafner scored his first collegiate goal Saturday night against OSU, helping the Falcons to a CCHA shootout win. Hafner s tally marks his first point since Dec. 2, 2012, an assist against Michigan State in a 5-1 loss on the road. Junior Brett Mohler also scored for Bowling Green Saturday night, marking his first goal since Feb. 5, 2011, a 2-1 loss to Michigan State on the road. Mohler failed to record a goal last season, missing the majority of the year due to injury. Power Play Drought The Falcons were 0-for-2 with the man advantage Saturday, extending their power play scoring drought to four games, going 0-for-16 in that span. The drought comes after the Falcons scored with the man advantage for three straight games to open the season. Bowling Green has killed off 13 straight power plays in that span. The Falcons have killed off 20-of-25 power plays (80 percent) this season. Stepping Up In the absence of senior Andrew Hammond, freshman goaltender Tommy Burke has stepped in and filled the void between the pipes for the Orange and Brown. So far this season, Burke is 1-2-1, including a shootout win against Ohio State Saturday night. Burke set a career high Friday, stopping 27-of-28 shots in the 1-0 loss. Burke sports a 2.22 goals-against average, and a.913 save percentage. CCHA Rookie Of The Week Burke earned CCHA Rookie of the Week honors after last weekend, marking the first Falcon to earn the award since Ryan Carpenter, who won it on two different occasions last season (10/10/2011 and 2/6/12). Zero On The Board Bowling Green s 1-0 loss Friday marks the first time since Feb. 25, 2012 that the Falcons have been held scoreless, a 3-0 loss to Michigan at the BGSU Ice Arena last season. Bowling Green was shut out six times last season. Home Worries After Saturday night, Bowling Green is at home this season, including Union s sweep of the Falcons two weeks ago. Bowling Green s last regulation win at the BGSU Ice Arena came back on Feb. 24, a 4-3 win over Michigan. Unlikely Hero Freshman Mark Cooper, after scoring against Ohio State Saturday night, now leads the Orange and Brown with three goals on the year. Four other Falcons are right behind Cooper with two goals scored in , including Ryan Carpenter, Dajon Mingo, Cam Wojtala and Bobby Shea. Playmaker Dan DeSalvo recorded an assist in the Falcons game Saturday night, giving him a team-high five helpers on the season. DeSalvo has yet to score a goal this year, after leading the Orange and Brown with 14 goals in Chris Bergeron Head Coach Head coach Chris Bergeron completed his second season at the helm of the Orange and Brown in , leading the Falcons to a overall record, including a mark of in conference play. While the overall record may not be flashy, the program saw steady improvement throughout the season, culminating in four postseason wins and a record in the final 10 contests, with a victory over then-no. 3 Michigan. The team also recorded backto-back shootout victories over then-no. 2 Ohio State in the latter stages of the season. Bergeron was named the Falcons seventh head coach in program history on April 12, 2010 and has posted an overall record of in his first two years. Under Bergeron s leadership, Bowling Green completed two CCHA Tournament upsets on the road last year, defeating Northern Michigan and national runner-up Ferris State in best two-out-of-three series to become the first No. 11 seed to ever reach the CCHA semifinals. The Falcons appearance at Joe Louis Arena marked their first trip to the CCHA semifinals in eleven years ( ). Bergeron also saw two of his players earn conference honors last season, including Player of the Week (Andrew Hammond) and Rookie of the Week (Ryan Carpenter) twice. Bergeron played at Miami from and was a two-year team captain, leading the team to its first CCHA Championship in program history as a senior. During that season, Bergeron scored a teamhigh 61 points on 21 goals and 40 assists. Along with his offensive achievements that year, the four-year letterwinner was named the CCHA s Best Defensive Forward as well as Miami s Most Outstanding Senior. He then spent seven years playing professionally before returning to Miami as an assistant coach. During that time, he played with the Adirondack Red Wings (AHL), the Birmingham Bulls (ECHL), the Toledo Storm (ECHL), the Cincinnati Cyclones (IHL) and the Columbus Cottonmouths (CHL), being named a league all-star four times. He also has coaching experience at the professional level, having served as a player/assistant coach with the Port Huron Bordercats of the United Hockey League for two seasons. Read more: Read more: Michigan State Last Season The Falcons were 0-2 against the Spartans last season, losing both games to MSU at Munn Arena. Michigan State Last Season (cont.) The Falcons lost 5-1 to Michigan State in game one. Ted Pletsch scored the lone Falcon goal, the first of his career. Five different players scored for the Spartans, while goaltender Andrew Hammond stopped 22 of 27 shots in the loss. Bowling Green dropped a 4-1 decision to Michigan State in game two, completing the Spartans weekend sweep. Michigan State registered three even-strength goals in the win, with one marker coming on the power play. Andrew Hammond stopped 29 of 33 shots in the loss, and Cam Sinclair scored the lone Falcon goal. It s Been A While The Falcons have not defeated Michigan State since the season, when Bowling Green shut out the Spartans at the BGSU Ice Arena 4-0 (Feb. 21, 2009). The Falcons have not defeated Michigan State on the road since Feb. 24, 2007, a 2-1 win at Munn Ice Arena. The Falcons on the current roster have struggled against the Spartans. Senior Andrew Hammond has never defeated MSU, going over his collegiate career. On the offensive side, not one Falcon on the current roster has scored more than one point against the Spartans. Sophomore Ted Pletsch scored his first collegiate goal against MSU last season. Sophomore Rusty Hafner also recorded his first career point (assist on Dec. 2) against the Spartans last year. Tale of Two Teams In seven games this season, the Falcons have only registered 64 penalty minutes, averaging 9.1 minutes a game. The Spartans are on the opposite end of the spectrum, having committed 103 minutes of penalties in just six games for an average of 17.2 per contest. The Spartans lead the CCHA in penalty minutes-per-game, while the Falcons rank 11th. Something Has To Give The Falcons have scored an average of two goals per game this season, ranking tenth in the conference, just ahead of Ohio State. Michigan State has allowed 3.67 goals per game this year, ranking last in the CCHA. Magic Number The Falcons have scored three goals in three different games this season, but have failed to reach four in The last time Bowling Green scored more than three goals was March 11, 2012, when the Falcons scored four against Ferris State in their second round series-clinching game of the CCHA Playoffs. 3

Marie. Tanner Sorenson and Anthony Hayes had the scores for the Spartans, who fall to on the season. Will Yanakeff made 26 saves for MSU. Michigan State rode a three-for-six performance on the power play to a 4-2 road victory at Lake Superior State on Saturday evening, earning a series split and their first conference win of the season. The Spartans got a goal and an assist from Tanner Sorenson, Matt Berry, and John Draeger, and freshman goalie Jake Hildebrand turned in an outstanding effort in his first collegiate start, making 27 saves. 13 Box Scores - Ohio State BGSU Hockey Notes The Falcons lost to Ohio State Friday night, falling to the Buckeyes by a score of 1-0. The Falcons were held scoreless for the first time this season, while freshman goaltender Tommy Burke (1-2-0) stopped a career high 27-of-28 shots in the loss. Bowling Green s 1-0 loss marked the first time since Feb. 25, 2012 that the Falcons have been held scoreless, a 3-0 loss to Michigan at the BGSU Ice Arena last season. The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team tied Ohio State, 3-3, Saturday night, eventually defeating the Buckeyes in a CCHA shootout.
