First, the Falcons will play host to FSU on Thursday night inside the Ice Arena. On Saturday, BGSU travels to Big Rapids, Michigan to complete the two game series. Both contests will begin at 7:05 p.m. The Series With FSU Radio Play-By-Play The flagship station of Bowling Green State University hockey is WBGU-FM (88.1) in Bowling Green. Andy Evans is in his third season as the play-by-play voice for the Falcons. All games can be heard on the internet at and via Real One Audio ( Bowling Green owns an all-time series lead of over Ferris State. Last season BGSU took home three of the possible four points over the Bulldogs, skating to a 5-5 tie the first night, and coming back with a 4-2 victory the following night. Head coach Scott Paluch owns a career record versus the Bulldogs, with his lone victory coming last season in Big Rapids, Michigan. Falcons Snap 10-game Losing Streak To Buckeyes BGSU snapped a 10-game losing streak to the Ohio State Buckeyes last Friday, skating to a 2-2 tie in Columbus, Ohio. The tie was the first point the Falcons earned against the Buckeyes in the Paluch era. Horrell Named CCHA Goalie Of The Week In only his fifth start with the Falcons Jon Horrell stole the show last Friday night in Columbus, Ohio. The senior netminder stopped a career-high 41 of a possible 43 shot attempts from the Buckeyes, earning him the #1 Perani Cup Star. After allowing the second shot of the game in, he turned away 40 of the next 41 Buckeye shot attempts. On the season the Beckenham, England, native has a 3.77 gaa and a.885 save percentage. Spread The Wealth Already this season BGSU has had 14 different players record points. They are led by sophomore Jonathan Matsumoto (4-4 8), Alex Foster (1-5--6) and freshman Kevin Schmidt (1-2 3). Six other Falcons have two points in the first four games of the year. Matsumoto Has Fast Start To Young Season Jonathan Matsumoto recorded his first career hat trick last Saturday night (Oct. 15) versus Boston College, and has eight points (4g, 4a) in the first four games of the season. On his hat trick he recorded one goal in the first period and two power-play goals in the second. In his brief Falcon career Matsumoto has recorded 22 goals (13 power play), 18 assists and 40 points in 40 career games. He is also on a current eight game point streak, recording seven goals and five assists. Matsumoto ranks first in the CCHA, and second nationally with 2.00 points per game, He also ranks first in the country with 1.00 power-play goals per game, and fifth in the country with 1.00 goals per game. He leads the team in goals scored (4), power play goals (4), points (8) and shots (17) this season. He is second on the team with four assists and shooting percentage (.235). Matsumoto, Foster and Falk Form Formidable First Line In the opening four games of the season the line combination of sophomores Jonathan Matsumoto and Alex Foster, combined with senior Mike Falk have tallied a total of seven goals, nine assists and 16 points. This trio has accounted for 58% of the team s goals (7-12), 41% on the team s assists (9-22) and 47% of the team s total points (16-34).

2 Head Coach - Scott Paluch Scott Paluch is in his fourth season as head coach of the BGSU hockey team. The Chicago native played for the Falcons from , helping lead the team to four-consecutive winning seasons (.655 winning pct.). He earned All- America and All-CCHA first-team accolades as a senior defenseman during the season. Paluch signed a professional contract with the St. Louis Blues upon completing his days with the Falcons, playing two years with Peoria of the International Hockey League. In his two seasons, Paluch played in 160 games, recording 21 goals and 69 assists. Paluch served as associate head coach at Boston College for seven years and was an assistant for eight years overall with the Eagles, serving under former BGSU coach Jerry York. BGSU has scored 12 goals on the season, with nine of them coming on the power play in 40 attempts. The team is led by Matsumoto (4), while James Unger, Kevin Schmidt, Don Morrison, Mike Falk and Derek Whitmore have also score PP goals this season. In terms of points the Falcons have scored 24 of 34 points this season on the PP. Matsumoto (6) and Alex Foster (4) lead the team point wise on the PP. The Falcons ranked 10th nationally and fourth in the CCHA on the power play (22.5%). Falcon Penalty Kill While facing some of the toughest competition in the country early this season the Falcon penalty kill has played solid defense. On the year they have killed 23-of-28 opposing power-play opportunities, holding #4 Boston College 2-for-9 and #2/3 Ohio State 3-for-14 with the man advantage. They also held Merrimack 0-for-6 to open the season. They ranked 29th in the country and seventh in the CCHA on the PK (82.1%). Schmidt Has Strong Opening Weekend Freshman Kevin Schmidt did not take long to make himself welcome inside the Ice Arena. In his first career start he recorded his first collegiate goal versus Merrimack College. The following night he posted two helpers versus Boston College. On the season the freshman has three points (1g, 2 a). Young And The Restless The Falcons may return seven seniors to the squad, but 15 of 26 members on this season s team have played at most one year in the Orange and Brown. For this season the Falcons have nine forwards, five defensemen and one goalie that will be underclassman. Not to mention, seven of the top 13 returning scores from last season have only one year under their belt. New And Improved Falcons The Falcons are coming off their best season in nearly a decade. BGSU had a fifth-place finish and recorded 13 league victories in As a result, the Brown and Orange hosted a CCHA Playoff series for the first time since Morrison Named Team Captain Senior Don Morrison will wear the C for the Falcons this season, and will be the only Falcon captain for the season. Falcons Triple Threat Senior Jon Horrell recorded a career-high 41 saves vs. OSU last Friday. Alex Foster, Jonathan Matsumoto and Brett Pilkington formed the first trio in seven years to tally 30 or more points in a single-season last year. Matsumoto led the team with 32 points, followed by Foster with 31 and Pilkington with a career-high 30. The last trio to have 30-plus points in a season were Dan Price (53), Adam Edinger (48), and Ryan Murphy (33) in Freshman Duo Matches Two-Decade Record Jonathan Matsumoto, along with Alex Foster, became the first Falcon freshmen tandem with 30-ormore points in a season since Greg Parks (42) and Clarke Pineo (30) in Matsumoto had a team-high 32 points (18g, 14a) while Foster had 31 points (8g, 23 a). Matsumoto also became just the third Falcon to lead BGSU in scoring in his freshman season. Fifty-four media members and all 12-league coaches participated in the yearly poll. Last season the Falcons finished fifth in the CCHA, posting a record after being picked to finish 10th/11th in last year's preseason poll. MEDIA POLL 1. Liut s father is NHL All-Star and BGSU Hall of Famer Mike Liut ( ) while Dobek s father is U.S. Olympian and BGSU Hall of Famer Bob Dobek ( ). Last season Bryan Dobek changed his sweater number to #7, which his father wore in the mid 70 s. Falcon Offense Packs A Much Harder Punch Last season BGSU scored 117 goals, the most by the Falcons since when they tallied 126 goals. BGSU finished fourth in the CCHA and tied for 13 th in the country with a 3.25 gaa. In a related note, BGSU s 48 powerplay goals last season were the most since (55 PPGs). This season the Falcons have scored 12 goals in the first four games, averaging 3.00 goals per game BGSU Offense Continued... Twenty-five Falcons notched at least one point a year ago, one off the school record of 26 in the season. Of those 25, 18 are returning for Fifteen Falcons reached double-digit point totals in , equaling the total from the season. Of those 15 from a year ago, 12 are returning for Ten Falcon veterans equaled or improved their career-highs last season. Among the top improvers were James Unger (+15 pts., +9 goals), Brett Falcon Offensive Upgrade Year Goals Goals/game Pilkington (+9 pts., +14 assists), Don Morrison (+5 pts., +5 assists), and Rich Meloche (+3 goals). Additions to Coaching Staff Jamie Dumont and Spencer Schmitz will join the BGSU coaching staff this season. Dumont comes to Bowling Green after serving as an assistant coach at Bowdoin College the last four seasons. Dumont replaces Kevin Patrick who joined the Wisconsin staff in mid August. Schmitz will serve as the volunteer assistant for the upcoming season and will be in charge of scouting upcoming opponents as well as video for all events. He was a member of the BGSU baseball team from and is currently working towards a master s degree in sports administration.
