Home games denoted in bold COLUMBUS, Ohio For the first time since the calendar flipped over to 2017, Ohio State (8-10-2, WCHA) will hit the ice for a pair of hockey games. It ll open up the second half of its schedule with a two-game set at Penn State (5-11-4, CHA) with games beginning at 6:00 on Friday and 2:00 on Saturday. LAST TIME OUT Ohio State s last time out on the ice was its weekend series with No. 1 Wisconsin. The Buckeyes lost both games against the Badgers, in the process closing out the season series between the two teams. Most notably, freshman goaltender Kaylee Remington made her first career start in the Saturday game, making 40 saves on the day, including 14 in the scoreless first period. She s now totaled almost 125 minutes in goal this season, every second of which has been spent facing a Top 3 opponent. BUCKEYE BITS - Ohio State s penalty kill sits at.915 right now, good for fifth in the country. They have killed 29 straight penalties dating back to the Oct. 15 game against Bemidji State, the longest active streak in the NCAA. - The Buckeyes enjoy playing non-conference games: they re 4-0 this season with a goal differential of Through 20 games this season, Ohio State has scored 33 goals: 11 in the first period, 11 in the second period, and 11 in the third period. - Maddy Field is tied for fifth among WCHA underclassmen in goals scored, and when it comes to getting shots on net, Field has been the best threat for Ohio State this season. She leads the team with 67 shots and 3.35 per game; no other Buckeye averages more than three per game, and just two (Dani Sadek and Lauren Boyle) average at least two. - She s excelled at blocking shots all season, and the numbers show it; Jincy Dunne leads all freshmen across the NCAA with 45, and that number puts her in the Top 10 nationally. Teammates Dani Sadek and Jessica Dunne also rank in the Top 15 nationally of that category. - Both Dunne and teammate Samantha Bouley are among the Top 10 scoring freshmen in the WCHA. Dunne has tallied nine points (2G, 7A) while Bouley has eight (4G, 4A). - Through the first half of the season Kassidy Sauve has been one of the best, and most tested, goaltenders in the country. She has faced 662 shots, far and away the most of any goalie, and she still owns a.946 save percentage, good OSU Record: (4-10-2) Goals/Game: 1.65 Goals Allowed/Game: 2.25 PSU Record: (4-3-1 CHA) Goals/Game: 2.55 Goals Allowed/Game: 2.90 for third-best in the NCAA. She's also one of six goalies to record at least four shutouts this year. - For her efforts, Sauve has been named WCHA Defensive Player of the Week three times this season. Her stats in weeks she's won the award: 3-2-1, 1.32 GAA,.968 Save %. - Perhaps even better are her numbers in Buckeye victories this season. In those eight games Sauve has allowed just four goals, good for a.50 GAA and a.985 Save %. - Boyle s hat trick against Lindenwood on Nov. 5 was the first by a defenseman this season in all of DI college hockey this season, men or women NATIONAL PRIDE Ohio State head coach Nadine Muzerall will be an assistant coach for Canada s U22 National Team at the 2017 Nations Cup. The tournament will run from January 4-7 and competition will be split between Telfs, Austria and Fussen, Germany. The tournament features two groups of four teams. Muzerall and Team Canada are in Group A along with the Czech Republic, Germany, and Sweden. Group B is comprised of Austria, Finland, Russia, and Switzerland. 2 Muzerall is no stranger to a Hockey Canada coaching staff. Earlier this year she was an assistant coach for a three-game series against the United States that took place in Calgary (during which Canada took two of the three games), and she has served as a camp coach at Canada s National Women s Under-18 Team selection camp. Back in July she was named to the coaching staff for Canada s National Women s Development Team. GOING CAMPING Ohio State defenseman Jincy Dunne was invited to USA Hockey s Women s Winter Training Camp back in December. A redshirt freshman from O Fallon, Mo., Dunne leads the Buckeyes with seven assists and is second on the team with nine points. Both of those totals put her in the Top 5 nationally among all freshmen defensemen. A total of 37 players were invited by USA Hockey including 11 current college hockey players. Dunne was one of seven WCHA players that received an invitation and she was the third-youngest player participating in the camp. COLLECTING VOTES Ohio State received votes in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll this week for the first time since the Oct. 25 iteration. Earlier this season after its weekend series with Bemidji State, Ohio State received votes in both major polls for the first time since February BRAND NEW BUCKEYES The NCAA s early signing period came and went, and head coach Nadine Muzerall and her staff had five future student-athletes ink National Letters of Intent. Lisa Bruno, Emma Maltais, Elizabeth Schepers, Tatum Skaggs, and McKenna Wesloh all signed NLI s to continue their academic and athletic careers at Ohio State, and all five have already experienced great success in their young hockey careers. Between the five of them they have won national championships, league championships, and put up some incredibly numbers on the ice. FLAG BEARERS Three former Ohio State women s hockey players competed at the 2016 Four Nations Cup, which began on Nov. 1 and ran through Nov. 5 in Vierumäki, Finland. Team Canada featured former Buckeye forward Natalie Spooner ( ), Team Sweden had defenseman Annie Svedin ( ), and the Team Finland brought former defenseman Minttu Tuominen ( ) to the ice. In four games, Spooner tallied one goal and two assists and was +2 during the tournament. Both Svedin and Tuominen appeared in all four games for their respective countries. Team USA claimed its seventh Four Nations Cup Championship with a 5-3 win over Canada. Held every year since 1996, the Four Nations Cup brings together the top four women s hockey countries in the world - Canada, Finland, Sweden and the United States - for an international tournament. GOOD FIRST IMPRESSIONS 10 new players and a new coaching staff made a spectacular debut against Rensselaer, winning 4-1 and 2-0. Eight of Ohio State s 15 points were registered by players who did not play last year, including three by Samantha Bouley. The freshman scored once and assisted on goals twice, most notably scoring the first goal of the Buckeyes season. A NEW ERA On September 10th in front of over 100,000 people at Ohio Stadium, Nadine Muzerall was introduced as the 4th head coach in Ohio State women s hockey history. She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the bench, having been a part of the coaching staff at Minnesota for four national championship-winning teams. Joining her is Jess Koizumi, most recently an assistant coach at Yale and a player in the NWHL. A former WCHA standout at Minnesota Duluth, Koizumi was given the role of associate head coach for the Buckeyes. Nick Laurila has also joined the staff as director of operations. Karel Popper has also joined the staff as an assistant coach. NEWCOMERS Ohio State welcomes 10 new student-athletes to its team this season, seven freshmen and three transfers: -#2 Elise Riemenschneider (Rocky River Ohio,) -#4 Jacyn Reeves (Holmen, Wisc.) -#7 Ariana DePinto (Carol Stream, Ill.) -#9 Liv Halvorson (Richfield, Minn.) -#14 Samantha Bouley (Stittsville, Ontario) -#16 Rebecca Freiburger (Rochester, Minn.) -#19 Olivia Soares (Hanover, Mass.) -#20 Katie Mikkelsen (Oshawa, Ontario) -#21 Crystal Sorem (Edina, Minn.) -#34 Kaylee Remington (Scandia, Minn.) WORLD TRAVELERS Former Buckeyes Julia McKinnon and Cara Zubko are currently over in Europe playing for EHV Sabres Vienna of the EWHL, one of the most successful teams in its respective league. It s no wonder that McKinnon and Zubko signed with such a successful team, seeing as they were two of the best players to come through the Ohio State women s hockey program. McKinnon finished her career with 33 goals and 39 assists, including a career-high 13 helpers this past season. Zubko, a 2016 BNY Mellon Wealth Management Hockey Humanitarian Award nominee, was a blue line mainstay during her career as a Buckeye. She saved her best offensive numbers for last, tallying five goals and 13 assists, both career highs. Nadine Muzerall has been named the fourth head coach in program history. Our journey to excellence in women s ice hockey begins, Diana Sabau, Ohio State senior associate athletics director, said. Nadine Muzerall has earned a reputation as one of the top coaches in the sport. She is uniquely qualified as the leader of our program. She has won four NCAA National Championships as a coach. She has more than 15 years of experience both nationally and internationally, played professionally in Europe and had a record-setting career as a student-athlete. Nadine is a teacher and an exact fit with the core values that we hold dearly at The Ohio State University. A two-time All-American at Minnesota, Muzerall spent five years behind the bench as an assistant coach with the Golden Gophers. The first women s hockey player to be inducted into her university s hall of fame, she helped guide her former team to four national championships and five-consecutive spots in the title game. A prolific player in her own right, she still sits atop the all-time goals scored list with 139 and graduated as the career points leader Prior to her return to Minneapolis, Muzerall made a couple significant career stops. She spent two seasons playing for Hockey Club Lugano in Switzerland, skating on the first line and leading her team in both points and goals. During her tenure, the team won a Swiss National Championship and advanced to the European Cup, where they won a bronze medal. She also was a teacher and hockey coach at Northfield Mount Hermon School in Mt. Hermon, Massachusetts, from 2002 to In addition to serving as the head women s hockey coach, Muzerall was a physical education teacher. She also has contributed as an instructor to several wellknown hockey camps, helping young hockey players across the country. I d like to thank the University of Minnesota for everything it has given me over my career, Muzerall said. To be able to coach at my alma mater means more than words can say, and to be a part of the group of players that helped build the program into what it is now is something I will always cherish. That being said I m ready to hit the ground running. We have the potential and the talent to make great things happen for this program. I m really looking forward to getting to know these young women, as well as the opportunity to serve as a mentor for them and not just make them better hockey players, but more importantly to prepare them as they enter the real world. 4
