1 SENATORS REGULAR SEASON GAME SUMMARIES Oct. 7, 5-3 loss at Detroit: Ottawa received multi-point efforts from Michalek (two goals) and Spezza (two assists), but five different Red Wings (Bertuzzi, Lidstrom, Emmerton, Hudler, White) scored to lift Detroit to a two-goal win over the Senators at Joe Louis Arena. Paul MacLean made his NHL head coaching debut against his former team (as a player and as an assistant coach) in a game that also featured the NHL debut of Ottawa s Mika Zibanejad. He recorded his first professional point with an assist on Kuba s third period goal. Howard earned the win in goal making 29 saves for Detroit while Anderson turned away 34 shots in taking the loss for Ottawa. Oct. 8, 6-5 loss at Toronto: Trailing 4-0 to start the third period, the Senators mounted a furious rally courtesy of a career high-tying three assists by Karlsson, Da Costa s first NHL goal, two goals (one shorthanded) by Alfredsson and singles from Greening and Spezza, but could not tie the game and eventually fell 6-5 to the Maple Leafs at Air Canada Centre. The game also featured two Ottawa goals scored eight seconds apart (Spezza, Alfredsson s second), which set a new franchise mark. Kessel tallied three times to lead the home side while Grabovski, Lupul and Orr also scored. The teams set a new record for combined goals (11) in what was the 86th alltime meeting between the clubs. Reimer made 27 saves to earn the win for Toronto, while Auld took the loss for Ottawa in relief of Anderson who played the first two periods. Oct. 11, 4-3 SO win vs Minnesota: The Senators overcame a 3-1 third period deficit to defeat the Wild for a sixth consecutive time and help head coach Paul MacLean earn his first NHL victory in front of a sold out crowd at Scotiabank Place. After Brodziak and Setoguchi helped Minnesota to a 2-0 lead through 20 minutes, Foligno s first of the season cut the visitors lead in half at 8:17 of the middle stanza. Johnson helped restore the lead less than two minutes into the final frame before Neil then Greening helped tie the game. Michalek, Spezza and Alfredsson scored in the shootout for Ottawa, while only Cullen responded for the Wild. Anderson earned the win in goal in making 24 saves while Backstrom turned aside 41 shots in taking the loss for Minnesota. Oct. 13, 7-1 loss vs Colorado: Michalek notched his team leading third goal of the season to open the night s scoring, but the visitors responded with seven unanswered goals to defeat the Senators 7-1 at Scotiabank Place. Lindstrom scored twice while Hejduk, Landeskog, Duchene, Winnik and Jones added singles in the visitors win. Giguere turned aside 15 shots to earn his first victory with Colorado while Anderson made 32 saves in taking the loss against his former team. Oct. 15, 2-1 loss at Washington: Three first period goals proved all the night s scoring as the Capitals edged Ottawa 2-1 at Verizon Center. Backstrom scored the night s only power-play goal 8:47 into the contest, before Johansson s second of the season upped the home side s lead to two at 12:01. Rundblad earned his first NHL point with an assist on Regin s first goal of the campaign at 19:34, but the Senators would not come any closer. Vokoun made 33 saves to earn the win for Washington, while Auld turned aside 24 shots in his first start of the season and taking the loss for Ottawa. Oct. 18, 7-2 loss vs Philadelphia: Seven different Flyers scored as Philadelphia put an end to a seven-game losing streak at Scotiabank Place with a 7-2 win over the Senators. Read, Simmonds, Giroux and Talbot helped the visitors to a 4-0 lead through 20 minutes before Spezza helped pull Ottawa to within three at 18:59 of the middle frame. Van Riemsdyk then Couturier and Zolnierczyk s first NHL goals respectively helped Philadelphia increase its lead before Karlsson completed a two-point night with his first goal of the season at 19:40. Bobrovsky stopped 21 shots to earn the win in goal, while Auld made six saves on 10 shots in the first period to take the loss before giving way to Anderson who made 17 saves. Byfuglien opened the night s scoring with the only goal of the first period at 14:39, but the home side responded with two goals in the middle frame. Alfredsson s unassisted tally at 9:15 of the third period provided insurance before Michalek scored into an empty net with 40 seconds to play to round out the night s scoring. Anderson earned his 100th career victory by making 35 saves in the Ottawa goal, while Pavelec turned aside 26 shots in taking the loss for Winnipeg. Kuba opened the night s scoring on the power play 6:47 into the game, but Johnson then Russell provided the visitors with a 2-1 lead by the 16 second mark of the middle stanza. Smith tied the game for Ottawa with his first goal of the season at 11:30 of the second, but Nash restored Columbus lead at 9:20 of the third. Spezza (one goal, two assists) tied the game with a power play marker at 19:24 before Michalek (one goal, one assist) deflected a Gonchar (two assists) point shot to seal the win at 19:55. 2 Oct. 25, 3-2 SO win at Carolina: Spezza scored the only goal of the shootout as Ottawa withstood the Hurricanes late charge in an eventual 3-2 shootout win at RBC Center. The victory marked the Senators first in Raleigh since 12/12/07. Konopka opened the scoring with his first goal of the season at 6:30 of the middle stanza before Spezza increased the lead to 2-0 on the visitors lone power play opportunity at 18:36. Gonchar had an assist on both goals. Ruutu cut the lead in half at 15:08 of the third before Skinner s fourth of the season was the equalizer at 17:29. Anderson made 32 saves, then three in the shootout to earn his third consecutive win, while Ward turned aside 26 shots and two of three Senators shooters in a losing effort for Carolina. Oct. 27, 4-3 win vs Florida: Foligno broke a 3-3 tie as the Senators won their second consecutive home game in the waning seconds - - a 4-3 decision over Florida at Scotiabank Place. Ottawa overcame a 1-0 and 2-1 deficit courtesy of goals from Alfredsson and Da Costa before Greening provided the Senators with their first lead at 17:53 of the final frame. Garrison and Weiss scored the visitors first two goals before Versteeg tied the game at 3-3 at 19:12 of the third. Alfredsson and Rundblad earned assists on Foligno s gamewinning goal at 19:56. Anderson made 22 saves for his fourth consecutive victory, while Markstrom turned aside 34 shots in taking the loss for the Panthers. Rangers: Trailing 4-1 with less than 11 minutes to play, the Senators rebounded to tie the game before earning their fifth consecutive win (and fourth straight in New York) with a 5-4 shootout decision at Madison Square Garden. Neil opened the scoring with the only goal of the first before the Rangers responded with two power play goals (courtesy of Callahan then Richards) in the middle stanza. The home side increased its lead to three via third period markers by Gaborik and Richards second by 8:05. Ottawa s comeback began at 9:18 when Spezza tallied his first of two in just over three and a half minutes. Michalek notched the equalizer at 17:10 before scoring the only goal of the shootout. Kuba matched a career high with three assists in a game that saw Anderson make 24 saves (and stop three New York shooters) to earn the victory. Lundqvist made 36 saves (and one of two Ottawa shootout attempts) in taking the loss for the Rangers. The result marked Ottawa s sixth consecutive victory. Greening and Neil also scored for the Senators in a game that saw Karlsson record his NHL-leading 12th assist of the season. MacArthur scored both goals for the visitors, while Grabovski and Kulemin each had two assists. Lehner made 23 saves to earn his first career home win while Gustavsson turned aside 27 shots in a losing effort for Toronto. Cowen s first NHL goal at 5:04 of the third tied the game, but Boychuk s goal 91 seconds later proved to be the winner. Lucic also scored for Boston. Foligno set a new career high with three points while Neil s two assists matched a career best. Thomas made 23 saves to earn the win, while Anderson turned aside 36 shots in seeing his personal five-game winning streak come to a close. After a scoreless opening frame, Cole s third marker of the season 13:55 into the middle stanza provided the Canadiens with the lead before Kostitsyn s fourth at 16:55 increased the advantage to two. Smith helped the Senators to within one with the team s second shorthanded goal of the year at 1:07 of the third period with a goal which closed the night s scoring. Price made 33 saves to earn the win for Montreal while Anderson turned aside 24 shots for Ottawa. Nov. 5, 3-2 SO loss vs Buffalo: The Senators and Sabres saw a game decided by one goal for the 12th time in the last 13 meetings when Roy (the night s 12th shooter) scored the game-deciding goal to lift Buffalo to a 3-2 win at Scotiabank Place. Michalek opened the scoring with his team-leading ninth of the season at 15:41 of the first period, but the visitors took their first lead on goals by Roy then Leopold by 12:55 of the middle stanza. Condra s first of the season at 14:13 tied the game at 2-2. After a scoreless third and overtime, Michalek and Spezza scored on Ottawa s first two shootout attempts, but Vanek and Boyes replied for the Sabres before Roy s eventual winner. Rangers: Michalek moved to within one goal of the NHL lead when he opened the scoring with his 10th goal of the season 8:39 into the middle stanza, but the Rangers responded with three consecutive goals en route to a 3-2 win at Scotiabank Place. Gaborik scored twice while Stepan added a single marker in New York s fifth straight win in Ottawa. Foligno closed the night s scoring with the 50th goal of his NHL career at 9:48 of the third period in a game which also featured Spezza s 350th NHL assist. 3 Nov. 11, 5-1 loss at Buffalo: Five different Sabres tallied goals to lift the home side to a 5-1 win over the Senators at First Niagara Center. Roy and Ellis scored 16 seconds apart to help Buffalo to a 2-0 lead 2:25 into the contest before Gonchar cut the deficit in half with a power play goal at 4:38. Leopold restored the two-goal margin just over 10 minutes later before Adam then Leino rounded out the night s scoring with third period markers. Enroth earned his second win over the Senators in six days by making 36 saves, while Anderson made four saves on six shots in taking the loss for Ottawa. Auld made 12 saves in a relief effort. Butler s first of the season at 9:50 of the third proved to be the game-winner before his insurance marker at 16:12 closed the night s scoring. After a scoreless opening frame, Henrik Sedin s power play goal at 2:31 of the middle stanza gave Vancouver a lead it held through 40 minutes. Greening redirected a Spezza pass to tie the game 3:32 into the third, but Higgins deflection of Hamhuis shot from the point won the game for the home side in the extra session. Condra opened the night s scoring 7:07 into the first before Ott s deflection of a Petersen point shot at 9:38 tied the game. Cowen earned his first NHL assist on Condra s goal. Raycroft made 33 saves to earn the win in the teams only meeting for the second consecutive season, while Anderson turned aside 29 shots in taking the loss for Ottawa.
