7 Nanooks miracle finish Staring at the prospect of an 0-2 start to the season at home against in-state rival Alaska Anchorage, the Nanooks responded in dramatic fashion on Oct. 11, scoring three goals in the final 28 seconds of play against the Seawolves, turning a 3-2 deficit into a 5-3 win. Ryan Campbell tied the game, putting home a rebound of a shot by Felipe Larranaga, for an extra-attacker goal with 28 seconds left in the game. With 18 seconds remaining the Nanooks took a 4-3 lead when Ryan Lang fed captain Cory Rask for a score and with one tick left on the clock Lang tipped in a centering pass to finish off the thrilling 5-3 victory for the Nanooks. Kelly Czuy and Cam Keith scored goals for UAF earlier in the contest. The Nanooks held 1-0 and 2-1 leads before Anchorage rallied to take a 3-2 lead. Rask, Sly named captains Jared Sylvestre, a redshirt junior, and Cory Rask, a senior, were named the co-captains of the University of Alaska Fairbanks hockey team. Rask has 20 goals and 22 assists in his first three years with the Nanooks. As a freshman he received the team s Don Jamieson Unsung Hero Award and last year he received the Ricky Pitta Most Dedicated Player and the Jamieson Unsung Hero awards. Sylvestre redshirted his first season at UAF while coming back from a summer knee injury. As a freshman he had nine goals and 12 assists and last year as a sophomore he had 11 goals and 17 assists. He is a +9 in his career. He has been CCHA All-Academic first team and All-Academic honorable mention the last two years with a 3.9 gpa in mechanical engineering. He received the Dirk Anderson Scholar-Athlete award as a freshman and the Keith Street Top Scorer award as a sophomore. Sylvestre broke his ankle in the first period of the Nanook s first game of the season against Alaska Anchorage and it out at least through the Christmas break. Playing to the nines After going unbeaten in their final nine regular-season games in , the nine seniors on the Nanook roster look to pick up where last year s team left off. The University of Alaska Fairbanks enters its ninth season as a member of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association and is hoping to put together a 20-win season for the ninth time in the modern era of UAF hockey. After starting in CCHA play last year the Nanooks finished and just two points out of fifth place. UAF was overall in and was last year, the first back-toback winning seasons by the team since The seniors on this year s team are defensemen David Keough and Felipe Larranaga; goaltender Preston McKay; and forwards Ryan Campbell, Cam Keith, Ryan Lang, Paul Austin, Tom Herman and Cory Rask. Nanooks Cheechakos The Nanooks have seven freshmen that bring a lot of size and skill to the lineup. UAF adds four forwards, two defenseman and a goaltender to the roster this season. Curtis Fraser is a 6-2, 188-pound center who led the British Columbia Hockey League in goals and was second in the league in total points ( ) while playing for the Victoria Salsa and Vernon Vipers last season. Jordan Emmerson is a 6-4, 220-pound left wing who had 32 goals and 53 assists for the Merrit Centennials of the BCHL and Lucas Burnett is a 6-2, 224-pound right wing who had 24 goals and 28 assists for the Trail Smoke Eaters of the BCHL. Andy Mumford is a Fairbanks native, who comes to the Nanooks after playing last year for the Fairbanks Ice Dogs. Joining the defensive corps for the Nanooks are a pair of blueliners from the AJHL. T.J. Pettersson is a 6-1, 192-pound defenseman who had four goals and 11 assists for the Olds Grizzlys. Nathan Fornataro is a 6-1, 195-pound blueliner from the Calgary Royals, who had five goals and 23 assists in 30 games. Goaltender Ryan Comeau played for the Canmore Eagles of the AJHL and the Dryden Ice Dogs of the Superior International Junior Hockey League last year. He was one of three AJHL players and the only goaltender rated as an A player in the NHL Central Scouting Bureau Oct Players to Watch listing recap The Nanooks had an up-and-down season on and off the ice, finishing overall and in the CCHA. Forward Aaron Voros battled a bone tumor, which thankfully turned out to be benign, but he had season-ending surgery in January. Voros expects to be back at full strength this season. Sophomore goaltender Keith Bartusch was one of the better stories in college hockey last season. After playing just over five minutes of mop-up duty as a freshman, the recruited walk-on took over the starting goaltending duties late last season and was during the regular season, before being the goaltender of record in the Nanooks opening playoff loss at Michigan State. The Nanooks finished with the team s second-highest point total in CCHA play, tied the team-record unbeaten streak at nine games, and won the Governor s Cup for the second straight season with a 3-1 games victory over Alaska Anchorage.
