1 EXETER LIVESTOCK CENTRE MARKET REPORT February 2018 Monday 5 th Prime Stock Market 70 PRIME CATTLE & BARREN COWS 10.45AM Auctioneer: Simon Alford Prime Cattle to 210ppk & 1372 Barren Cows to 178ppk & 1556 A further very respectable entry of finished and cull cattle on Monday saw some outstanding returns with best Prime Cattle rising to an impressive 210ppk ( 1294) for an terrific Angus heifer (21m) from Willian Knapman of Meeth followed by a shapely Limousin female (27m) from Brian Vallance, Bickington at 203ppk and Angus steers (20m) from Basil Cane, Plymouth sold readily to 195ppk with his South Devon bullock of a similar age totalling 1260, also a Blonde steer (29m) from Keith & Hilary Harvey, Bovey Tracey fetched 190ppk or 1269 and a Limousin steer (25m) saw 192ppk for RJ Macbean & Son of Plymstock. A well finished Charolais heifer (26m) from David & Andrew Mortimer of Sowton Village look a good price at 191ppk and Over Thirty Month prime cattle hit a high of 1285 (180ppk) for a cracking Charolais heifer (33m) from William Bromell of Chagford whilst an aged Galloway steer from Steve Palmer, Bovey Tracey grossed Barren cows a strong trade once again with a quite incredible Blonde from Keith & Hilary Harvey topping that section, drawing 170ppk and at a massive 918kg realised a market record breaking 1556! Next in line was a young, eye catching Limousin from Andrew Cleave, Moretonhampstead which eased to a creditable 178ppk and a Charolais from William Bromell which levelled out at a hefty 1367 (158ppk). Other cows worth a mention included a smart Stabiliser from Alan Derryman of Sidbury which drew 150ppk, other Limousin s at 144ppk for both Michael Vooght, Hennock and Nick Reed of Copplestone and Simmentals to 144ppk for Douglas Horton of Kingsbridge. Native bred barreners very much on the wanted list with Blue/Grey s to 139ppk for Steve Palmer, Herefords reaching 135ppk for Frank Davies of Crediton and South Devon cows to 133ppk for CE Caunter & Sons of Ipplepen. Although it was a shame to see him having to be culled, as good an example of a Devon bull you will see strained the scales at close on 1200kg and at 116ppk totalled a colossal 1379 for Geoffrey Hosegood, East Worlington. 2 785 SHEEP 9.30AM Auctioneers: Russell Steer & Ian Caunter Lambs to 99 & 226ppk Hoggs to & 207ppk Cull Ewes to 120 & Rams to PRIME HOGGS & 14 PRIME SPRING LAMBS A very short entry of Hoggs as replicated throughout the country over the past week to ten days helped drive the trade sky high for all weights and breeds. Best overweight hoggs sold to for Tony Pickard of South Molton, 100 for Martin Gillbard of Morchard Bishop and for T Petherick of New Buildings. Smart 52kg hoggs from H & N Saunders of Chawleigh topped the sale at (202ppk) followed by their 48kgs at 97 (also 202ppk) and very closely followed by Geoff Tripp of East Prawle with 51kgs at 103 (202ppk) and a second pen of 49kgs at kg hoggs to 95 (202ppk) for Arthur Palmer of West Alvington and 93 (198ppk) for Tony Pickard who also had pens of 45kg fed hoggs at 92 & 90 (204 & 200ppk) as well as a pen of 43kgs at 88 (205ppk). Other 45kgs at 88 for H & N Dunn of North Tawton and further pens of 43kgs at (203ppk) for both Stan Wreyford of Blackawton and Arthur Palmer who also had 41kgs at and 40kgs at (both 204ppk). Leo & Weight Average s Per P.P.K Head Jeanette Bradford of Iddesleigh sold 42kg hoggs at (204ppk) as well as 40kgs at (203ppk), a price matched by Mary Curtis of Cadeleigh. Lighter hoggs saw 39kgs to for LG Pincombe of Mariansleigh, 38kgs to for Chris & Katie Steer of Modbury who also had 34kgs at 67 and 37kg hoggs provided the top pence per kilo when they sold for or 207ppk. SQQ is up 12 pence to 199ppk. An entry of 14 Spring Lambs ahead of next week s opening sale sold well with a smashing pen of 42kg Charollais cross Dorset s from James Westcott & family of Cullompton selling at 95 or 226ppk. A single heavyweight pure Dorset from Uprising Properties of Dawlish rose to 99. Three Texel ewes from N & H Dunn of North Tawton topped the sale at 120, a crossbred whether from T Petherick made 113 and crossbred ewes made for Alan Weymouth of Salcombe, for James Westcott & family and 100 for Ray & Sylvia Toms of Cheriton Bishop. Twelve further pens from 95 to 99. Rams peaked at 117 for a pair of Texels from Alan Weymouth and also for a Dorset Horn from Ross & Helen May of Nextherexe with more Rams at for T Petherick and the majority of others were 70 to 95 to give an average of 85 on the rams. Mules sold to 78 for Ken, John & James Heard of Okehampton who also sold big Scotch ewes at Averages up 4 to just over 70, very pleasing considering the varied quality on offer.
