We here at the ranch appreciate the time you spend studying this year s bull sale offering. As the bull sale catalogs pour into your mail box, if you take the time to sort through them, you will find we are the different ones in the group. Why? We run our cows as many of you do. They are turned out on large Forest Service and Tribal Ranges. Do they all come home? Not often, but by running our cows this way we insure that these cattle are functional in every aspect. The cows are AI d for days then bulls go in, just as yours do, and we are on pasture as we graze as long as possible, the same as you. These bulls are raised on grass and milk with zero creep feed. This insures we are able to sort out the cows that cannot raise a calf on the inputs that Mother Nature provides. We sort through these bulls heavily and only sell the top 50%. The rest are marketed as feeder cattle in January and February. So when we say pounds pay the bill, we know exactly how that works as we market over 500 head of feeder cattle each year. Just as previous years and well into the future, our focus has remained the same. Raise cattle that are easily born with real world calving ease (shape and structure) that get up and get going and grow into something you can get top dollar for and build your reputation on, as a top cattle producer. Buying the right bulls is a very important decision for your herd. It will shape the future generations of your cow herd through daughters and granddaughters. We provide actual weights as we believe it gives a more accurate information profile than the adjusted, especially at weaning and birth. I ask when comparing your next bull purchase you get all the information. You can rest assured that we take bull selection, yours and ours, very seriously as it will shape your cow herd for years into the future. Compare the phenotype, actual data and genomics. These bulls are ranked in the top of the Angus breed in many categories. They are out of a herd that has been sculpted for almost 60 years, beginning when Grandpa Lou started. For 3 generations we have worked to make this a herd of sound, functional females that have fertility, good udders, volume, growth, muscle and maternal instincts to reduce the inputs it takes to raise a calf in today s world. We have all seen cows that are too big or too small, but have never seen a cow that is too fertile. Fertility is not negotiable. It is one trait that you can t get too much of, cows that don t breed back can t produce a calf. Low Maintenance: An animal that is easy fleshing, moderate framed and thrifty will keep more money in your bank account. Most cattlemen will agree that the cost of feed dips into the profit more than anything else. Lovely Udders: Small and well-spaced teats, adequate milk and strong support are necessary for a trouble-free experience for a newborn calf. A newborn s first drink of colostrum is the most important drink that calf will have. An udder that is full of mud from hanging too low or has balloon teas will discourage them from nursing. Choosing the right herd sire for replacement females is a must. Longevity: Mother cows must continue doing everything right year after year. A cattleman cannot afford to turn his mother cows over every 3-4 years. That old cow that raised a calf for 10 years, even if it isn t the heaviest weaning, is more profitable than the cow that does not breed back and has to be replaced after a couple years. That factory is not efficient. Limit Inconsistency: By stacking generations of the same kind of balanced and predictable genetics, you have a pretty good idea what that cow will produce. The present EPD system, which is a valuable tool when used with other information, doesn t have the ability to create cattle that are uniform and consistent phenotypically.
