And, if you re able, to come to the ranch anytime to evaluate the sale cattle, cow herds and herd sires. Our Herefords have been line bred to ensure the cowherd consistently produces predictable, desirable traits and phenotype. The drought conditions we and most of you ve experienced recently makes this more important. Fertility is primary; and today s outcross genetics are delivering high performing, muscular bulls from our line-bred foundation cows with smaller birth weights, increased maternal traits and improved carcass traits. Additionally, our Herefords continue to have consistently low. Since the early 90 s, our Angus have been a closed herd in order to develop a line of three dimensional, thick Black Angus for high altitude use. We ve used low genetics and emphasized traits to match our Herefords. In order not to go too far with line breeding, in 2016, we bred our heifers to an outcross A.I. sire - Cole Creek Cedar Ridge 1V who is a proven low bull. We re well pleased with and a home raised son is continuing to add to our gene pool. Such a tightly line bred herd results in flat. Although their figures don t reflect an animal s potential, the cattle are thick, easy fleshing, and muscular with good scores. They also offer customers the benefit of highbred vigor within a breed. Dr. Tim Holt, DVM, of Colorado State University, completed our testing August 15th - confirming that our 2018 sale bulls have stable scores. scores are in the catalog and a supplemental sheet will be available on sale day with additional data. Their scores are included in the catalog. (Expected Progeny Differences) 9/20 Wt. are useful tools for evaluating cattle, but are impacted by management practices and environment. They should not be used as the sole criteria for selection as they don t always reflect the true potential of a pedigree. Therefore, we offer as many actual weights as possible. The following explains the you will find in this catalog: Calving Ease Direct (CED) indicates the sire s influence on calving ease in females calving at 2 years of age. They re detemined by calving ease scores and birth weights. Positive are desireable for this trait. Birth Weight (BW) EPD is an indicator of calving ease and birth weight. For instance the animal in chart #1 should have calves which weigh 2.9 pounds more than an animal with a BW EPD of 0.0. The Yearling Weight EPD of the Hereford and Angus YW scores means that their calves would be expected to be 26 and 18 pounds heavier, respectively, than the progeny from an animal with a Yearling Wt. EPD of +50 pounds. Maternal : Calving Ease Maternal (CEM) EPD indicates how easily a sire s daughters will calve at two years of age when compared to daughters of other sires. This figure isn t provided for the Herefords due to space limitations Milk EPD (M&G EPD = Milk & Growth for Hereford cattle). The Milk figure reflects the weaning weight potential due to milk production (expressed in pounds of calf weaned) of an animal's daughters. For the Hereford cattle "M&G" is the Milk figure plus the growth potential passed on to the calves through an animal's daughters. The "M&G" is a formula: 1/2 Wean Wt. EPD + Milk EPD. Scrotal EPD is the is the best estmimate of fertility associated with age at puberty. Carcass : Fat EPD reflects the differences in adjusted 365-day twelfth-rib fat thickness. Bulls with lower the figures(&minus) are expected to produce leaner progeny than those with higher fat figures. REA EPD shows the differences in adjusted 365-day ribeye area measurements. Relatively higher figures = better muscled and higher yielding carcasses. Marbling EPD shows differences in adjusted 365-day intramuscular fat (IMF) - an indicator of higher/lower quality grade and an important trait. It is based on ultrasound measurements of live yearling cattle. *** The Angus bulls were not scanned because they can t be weighed where they are wintered and we can t bring them home in time to be processed within the American Angus Association s age parameters., R & L: The Hereford cattle have been scored for eye pigment on each eye: 1= no pigment; 2= light pigment; 3 = significant pigment; 4 = fully pigmented around eye; 5 = full circle of pigment or goggle eye. BW and Calving Ease Scores: The actual birth weight is recorded for each sale animal. All deliveries were unassisted, except for backwards calves unless specifically noted by comment. Therefore, there are no calving ease scores listed. Adjusted Weaning Weight: Weaning weights have been adjusted to 205 days of age. REA & : Comparison of REA and Inter Muscular Fat(Marbling) scores within contemporaries. scores are factored into Breeding Soundness and Pelvic Data: All of the coming 2 year old bulls have passed a complete breeding soundness exam based on scrotal circumference, morphology (evaluation of the amount of sperm abnormalities) and sperm motility.
