1 WJSA Newsletter 2013 Dear Fellow Shorthorn Enthusiasts, As I reflect back on the year the Wisconsin Junior Shorthorn Association has had I am excited and encouraged. WJSA has come to be filled with many hardworking leaders that I know will carry what has been built as an association into the future. As my time as a junior soon comes to a close, I am reminded of the things I wish I had known when I first joined WJSA. So, I will leave you with these five tokens of advice. 1. Get Involved! Take the time to hold a junior board position or become the WSA Shorthorn Lassie Queen. You will learn so much about yourself as a leader and a member of a team that will carry with you far past your junior years. Inside This Issue: 2. Go Outside of Your Comfort Zone! Go talk to people you normally wouldn t talk to. Get to know other junior members from Wisconsin and from other state associations. The people you meet at cattle shows will become some of your life-long friends. 3. Be Grateful! When one show doesn t go your way, take the time to remember where you started from and recognize how far you have come. Continue to thank all of the people that have helped you along the way. 4. Give Back What You Have Learned! We have all had the opportunity to learn new tricks or tips from someone throughout our years in WJSA. It is the help from others that have brought us to where we are with our cattle. So, give back what you have learned. Take the time to teach new showmen what you have learned. Trust me, they will be forever grateful. 5. Forget the Little Things and Enjoy Yourself! Your time as a junior member will go by way too fast! So, let go of the one bad show or the one bad day and enjoy your time as a junior. 2 Meet Your Junior Board Hope Schlimgen --- President Four years ago I took an active part in working to establish a Junior Board for the WJSA. Since that time I have served the WJSA as Junior Board President, Show Chair, Membership Chair, Lassie Princess and Lassie Queen. I am currently in my third year at the University of Wisconsin Whitewater where I am majoring in Special Education. In the future I hope to open an early intervention and transition services facility to aid individuals with cognitive disabilities. I also look forward to continuing to grow my Shorthorn herd and be an active part of the WSA in years to come. Some of my proudest show ring accomplishments include breeding and showing the 2009 Champion Shorthorn Steer at the WI State Fair, having the Reserve Grand Champion Bred and Owned Bull at the 2013 National Junior Shorthorn Show, and winning Reserve Division II Champion Heifer at the 2013 N.A.I.L.E. Damian Hadorn-Papke --- Vice President I am from Eau Claire, WI and am a senior at Augusta High School. I plan to attend UW- Eau Claire for Pre-Med Biology, which will allow me to continue showing cattle at local fairs. My family started off in the cattle business with my Grandfather who had Angus, Hereford, and Crossbred cows. The color red took over when we bought our first Shorthorn 11 years ago. Since then we have grown to about 80 head of cattle including my Grandfather s cattle. My first national show was the Shorthorn Jr. Nationals in Iowa when I was 10. I have attended or participated in national competitions from then on because of the great experience I had there. I have also enjoyed my time at the WI Jr. Shorthorn Show for several years. This year my heifer had many successes in the show ring. Each year I feel that I have improved my cattle genetics with this past year s shows being my proudest. Although I have never served on the WI Jr. Board before I embraced it and was extremely happy that this opportunity was presented to me. It is a great experience and it helped me expand my knowledge of what was happening in our breed. 2

3 Morgan Denzer --- Secretary I am planning on attending Iowa State University next year to study Biological Systems Engineering. At a young age I was given the option of any breed to show. I chose Shorthorns for their color and haven t regretted the decision since. I am currently the Secretary of the WJSA. Last year I was the President and I have been the Secretary and Director-at-Large. I truly enjoyed seeing this organization start and seeing it grow as I have grown with it. My proudest Shorthorn accomplishment would be at this past year s Junior Nationals where my bred and owned heifer won her owned class. Samantha Straley --- Show Chairperson Hi, I m Samantha Straley from Elton, WI where I own a small herd of Shorthorn and ShorthornPlus cows. I am a freshman at UW-River Falls, studying Agricultural Marketing Communications. In the past I have served as the WI Lassie Queen and Membership Chairperson. I am really excited about being this year s Show Chairperson and I hope to see you all at the Wisconsin State Shorthorn Show! Meet Your Junior Board 3

4 Meet Your Junior Board Sarah Biesbier --- Membership Chairperson My name is Sarah Biesbier. I am the daughter of Eric and Debbi Biesbier and I live in Reedsburg, Wisconsin and am currently a junior in High School. My plans after High School are going to college for Ag Marketing Communications. I started showing cattle when I was 12 years old and when I was 14 my sister, Eryn, and I bought our first Shorthorn heifers and started building a herd. My greatest experience in WJSA was participating in Shorthorn Junior Nationals in Grand Island, Nebraska. 4

5 Shorthorn Fellowship at WSA State Show On July 15th and 16th Shorthorn breeders from across Wisconsin gathered in Lodi, WI for a weekend of showing and Shorthorn fellowship. The Wisconsin Shorthorn Association had yet another great turnout on Father s Day weekend with 41 head entered in the Junior Show and 42 head entered in the Open Show. The weekend included a picnic, an educational event and kickball competition for Junior members, a photography competition, a silent auction, and an educational talk from ASA s Field Representative, Patrick Wall. Members of the Wisconsin Shorthorn Association and Wisconsin Junior Shorthorn Association were excited to learn about genomics and look forward to networking more with the American Shorthorn Association in the future! 8 On June 24 th, nine Wisconsin youth headed to Des Monies, Iowa with 17 head of cattle for the National Junior Shorthorn Show and Youth Conference. While there these WJSA members took part in the opening ceremonies, exhibited high quality livestock, participated in youth sweepstakes, showed there Wisconsin hospitality by giving away Wisconsin cheese curds, and got a chance to meet other Shorthorn enthusiasts from across the country. 10 Mackenzie Cash American Junior Shorthorn Association Junior Board Member Meet Wisconsin s AJSA Junior Board Representative! What was your experience like running for the Junior Board? I knew that I wanted to run for the American Junior Shorthorn Association Board since the first Junior Nationals that I attended. I watched the junior board at the Junior Nationals keep the wheels turning for the whole event. Little did I know at that time, everything else they did throughout the year. As I got older and learned more about the position, I knew that it was something that I was going to apply and run for. I first ran for the position in 2012 and didn t end up getting elected to the board. I was really discouraged and I wasn t sure if I was going to run again. I ended up going to Louisville that fall and was approached by Hannah Winegardner, who was currently on the junior board, and she encouraged me to re-run for the position. That put everything in motion. In February I turned in my paper application. Following the paper application, you wait until Junior Nationals when the process with voting delegates and interviews begins. The election process included attending Youth Conferences, where I participated in the mentor/apprentice program, was introduced to state delegates, and participated in a round robin question and answer session. In addition to the Youth Conferences, I was interviewed by a panel of industry leaders and helped run many of the events and contests. While running for the board at Junior Nationals I wasn t able to spend a lot of time with my friends from Wisconsin, but as I look back on it, the time spent working was well worth the reward, experiences, friendships, and networks that I have built since then and can t wait to continue growing these during my two year term. What has been your favorite experience or event you have participated in as a AJSA board member? So far, I have attended KEY Conference, the Maternal Legends Leading a Legacy Sale, N.A.I.L..E, and the National Western Stock Show and will be attending Youth Beef Industry Congress, and Junior Nationals again. I would have to say so far that my favorite event has been the National Western Stock Show. The shows weren t quite so long so the junior board was able to do a lot of activities together. We went through the trade show (even racing toy ponies), walked through the display bulls, went out to eat, and had lessons in etiquette. What advice would you give future WJSA members interested in running for the AJSA Junior Board? After running twice, I have quite a bit of advice about what works and what doesn t work. I would say to not wait until last minute for anything. Then, prepare yourself on the history of AJSA and ASA (dates, etc.) know the names and states of current junior board and senior board members, know current events with ASA, and any other questions you might be asked. Also, be prepared to work hard at Junior Nationals, you might not get to spend as much time with your state association as in other years. In addition, BE OUTGOING! Go talk to others from other states! If you have any questions or concerns, or want to talk about running for the AJSA Junior Board, ask me! 13 WSA Pasture Walk September 14, 2013 The Schlimgen Family - Dreamy 280 Cattle Co. hosted the WSA Pasture Walk at their farm in Blue Mounds, WI. The day began with a pot-luck dinner followed by a pasture walk, farm facilities tour, and explanation of Dreamy 280 s cattle program. Professor Dan Schaefer from the UW-Madison Animal Science Department spoke about fall cattle management and Gene Schriefer the Iowa County UW Extension Ag Agent shared information about pasture grasses and rotational grazing. There was a scavenger hunt for the junior members. The weather was perfect and it was a wonderful day filled with Shorthorn camaraderie. 13

DREAMY 280 JOE RIDER 204 Sire: SS Joe Rider 358 Dam: Dreamy 280 Sables Delight Date of Birth: 1/1/12 Dreamy 280 Cattle Company is located in Blue Mounds, Wisconsin and has been actively raising Shorthorn and Angus cattle for the past 16 years. Hope began her journey in the Shorthorn breed when she started showing cattle in 4-H. Hope was drawn to how pretty Shorthorns were and her love for them has grown immeasurably. Dreamy 280 has continued to expand their herd and works to raise quality show and production cattle through marketing heifers, bred heifers, bulls, steers, as well as direct marketing beef. Dreamy 280 Joe Rider 204 is proof of Dreamy 280 s growth. His 2013 winnings include: Reserve Grand Champion Bred and Owned Bull at the National Junior Shorthorn Show, Grand Champion Shorthorn Bull at the Wisconsin State Fair, Reserve Champion Shorthorn Bull at the Wisconsin State Shorthorn Show and World Beef Expo, and Reserve Grand Champion Bull at the Black Hills Stock Show, SD. Dreamy 280 Joe Rider 204 was recently sold to the Cooksey Farms of Roggen, CO. Dreamy 280 Joe Rider 204 s success this past year at the National Junior Shorthorn Show is one of Hope s proudest show ring accomplishments. Hope looks forward to continually increasing her herd quality throughout the years and networking with fellow Shorthorn breeders within the industry. 14

15 2013 WI Shorthorn Association Female of the Year Congratulations Jeremie Siegler! HOOK MARGIEMARGIE 52Z Sire: Hi Views Ace of Diamonds Dam: HL Shannon Margie 05 Date of Birth: 9/2/12 Jeremie Siegler has been showing since he was 9 years old and this was his last year showing as a junior. Jeremie has enjoyed showing and helping others at shows. The Siegler family has a small herd of Shorthorn and Commercial cows that they have had a lot of success with. Hook MargieMargie 52Z has been a great addition to our Shorthorns. She was Supreme Champion in both the junior and open shows at the Wisconsin Shorthorn Show, Champion Shorthorn Heifer at Wisconsin State Fair in the junior show, and won her division at the Wisconsin State Fair in the open show and at World Beef Expo. Jeremie also took her to the 2013 NAILE. Jeremie works full time at PATS Services, Inc. where he is a driver and service tech. He hopes to add more cows to his herd and eventually get into raising and selling club calves. 15

16 Lassie Chat 2013 WI Shorthorn Lassie Queen Samantha Straley As my time has ended as the Wisconsin Shorthorn Lassie Queen I would just like to thank the Wisconsin Shorthorn Association for the support and the privilege of allowing me to serve as your Wisconsin Shorthorn Lassie Princess and Queen. It was a real honor and I had a wonderful time promoting the great Shorthorn breed and the Wisconsin Association! The biggest highlight of my time as the Wisconsin Shorthorn Queen was representing the WSA at the 2013 Shorthorn Junior Nationals in Des Moines, Iowa last summer. But, of course, every time I served as the Wisconsin Shorthorn Lassie Queen it was a true highlight in my life and such a privilege. Due to the start of college, I made the decision to not vie for the National Shorthorn Lassie Queen title. It was a decision that wasn t easy to make but vying for the national crown has not escaped my mind in for in the future. Again, I would like to say thank you, very much. I will never forget the opportunity that the WSA has allowed me. At UW River Falls I am majoring in Agriculture Marketing and Communications so in my future I will always be able to promote the Shorthorn breed and cattle industry to the best of my abilities. 18 Wisconsin Shorthorn Association Scholarship Information 2013 WSA Scholarship Samantha Straley Samantha Straley is 18 years old and a graduate of White Lake High School. Samantha owns a small herd of Shorthorn and ShorthornPlus cattle in Elton, Wisconsin. She is currently attending the University of Wisconsin- River Falls, studying Agricultural Marketing Communications. Samantha has been actively involved in the Wisconsin Shorthorn Association serving as the WSA Lassie Queen and Princess, as well as Membership Chairperson and Show Chairperson on the WJSA Junior Board. Scholarships/s of $150 may be awarded to beginning or continuing students enrolled in a post-secondary program. Applications must be postmarked or electronically received by June 1 st. 19 WJSA FEATURED JUNIOR MEMBER The Wisconsin Junior Shorthorn Association is filled with hard working members who excel in and out of the show ring. Each year we highlight one of our junior members and their involvement within WJSA. This year we are pleased to feature Nicole Bakken who has demonstrated great interest and involvement with Shorthorns and the Wisconsin Junior Shorthorn Association. Hi! My name is Nicole Bakken. I am from Stoughton, WI and I am 15 years old. My mom worked at a Dairy Farm when I was in 3 rd grade and I wanted to show a steer. I got a dairy steer from that farm and ended up showing that steer and two Hereford heifers that year. That experience hooked me on showing cattle. Both of my brothers showed and I always liked helping them with their cattle. I had always wanted a Shorthorn heifer. I finally got my first one in 2009 at World Beef Expo. I just joined WJSA last year because I wanted to interact with other kids that are in the Shorthorn breed. I wanted to get involved with people that have the same breed that interests me. Everyone in the Wisconsin Shorthorn Association has welcomed me and I thank everyone. It s a good bunch of people. I had a really good time at the Shorthorn Junior Nationals in 2013 and I hope to participate in this show throughout my junior show career. Receiving the Champion Carcass steer at Nationals was just shocking and I was super excited about my steer. In 2013 I had a lot of proud moments in the show ring, it was the best show year that I ve had. I think one of my proudest moments was at the WI State Fair Open Show. My Shorthorn heifer was Reserve Champion Shorthorn Fall heifer. I was really happy with my heifer. If I had a second most proud moment it would be winning Reserve Champion Steer at the Dane County Fair. I absolutely love showing cattle. I couldn t think of a better thing to do over the summer and working with them in the winter. This is my sport and I love doing it. I would like to get up to about 15 Shorthorn cows and keep improving my genetics.

20 2013 Friend of WI Junior Shorthorn Lisa Schlimgen WJSA Advisor & Lassie Advisor I was truly honored to have been chosen to receive the first annual Friend of WJSA award! I began serving as the WJSA Advisor in Since that time I have had the privilege to work with talented WJSA members and watch them form the WJSA organization into one of which they can be very proud of. My involvement in my family s cattle operation includes; bookkeeping, advertising, cattle show and sale entries, chore and field work as needed, and helping to calve out our 65 Shorthorn and Angus cows. I also manage our direct market beef business, Dreamy 280 Farm Fresh Meats, LLC. Since January of 2013 I have greatly enjoyed working as the 4-H Youth Development Advisor for Iowa County which I will do until June of My favorite shows to attend are World Beef Expo and the National Junior Shorthorn Show. Some of our family s favorite memories include times during showcations. JUNIOR NEWS JUNIOR NEWS JUNIOR NEWS Youth may exhibit at Wisconsin State Fair through the Wisconsin Junior Shorthorn Association Criteria for showing at Wisconsin State Fair through WJSA Age eligibility: Must be between the ages of by January 1 of the current year. 1. Be a member of WJSA by March 1 of the exhibition year. 2. Attend an educational event. Proof of attendance must be sent to the WJSA advisor prior to exhibition at WSF. 3. Show at the State Shorthorn Show or the Junior National Shorthorn Show during the year in which you want to exhibit at WSF. 4. Show a Shorthorn or ShorthornPlus at the WSF Junior Show during the year in which you want to exhibit at WSF. At WSF you will stall with your county. WSF Junior exhibitors now submit all entry information and fees directly to Wisconsin State Fair either on-line or via the mail. Exhibitors wishing to show Junior market steers at the Wisconsin State Fair will need to self identify their animals with an official RFID identification tag and submit a DNA hair sample to WSF.
