1 T & T CATTLE BULL & FEMALE SALE FEBRUARY 6, 2018 RIVERTON, WYOMING RED ANGUS, ANGUS, AND SIMANGUS TM

2 Welcome to our first bull and female sale. We have a lot to prove in a short amount of time, so let s get to it. First, we want to let you know that we are no different than you. We want productive and hardy cattle, cattle that don t need doctored, pampered, or any unnecessary attention. We have lives to live too, and don t want to be married to our cattle. To many young people today see the tedious hours spent, and want no part of agriculture. I can t say I blame them. With that perspective, we decided to take a different route. Now, different is not easy, in fact it s downright difficult. Think crabs in a bucket. However, we saw the results and stayed the course. Maybe we should back up and see how this all transpired. We had a plan to raise the type of cattle that we just discussed. We were fortunate to purchase a group of bred Red Angus grandma cows, ages 8 to 14, from Buffalo Creek before they dispersed. These were great cows with a proven record. Now we just needed a bull. We scoured all the bull stud catalogs looking for the next great sires. We found plenty and began AI ing right away. To make a long story short, the next 2-3 years were hell. The calves didn t look anything like the catalog pictures. Needless to say, these early calf crops were almost entirely scrapped. We even tried cross breeding, but couldn t find anything in the other breeds that were any better. The only calves that turned out, were the ones that were in-dam when we purchased the cows. We began a quest to find a sire to compliment our cows. All the looking and research paid off, and this catalog is full of the results. Now, this wasn t our first endeavor in cattle, or agriculture. We were born into it, and are the 4th generation to farm and ranch in Wyoming. We have one of the toughest environments in the country and thought we knew what we were doing. Why was it so tough? What happened to the hardy cattle that my grandparents raised? Where were these frail, pencil-gutted, poor footed, giraffenecked, elephant sized, hard-doing cattle coming from? More research and studying, and the results were astounding. A summary of our findings goes like this: the Packers wanted bigger cattle, the Feeders wanted cattle to stay on feed longer, the bull studs made these type of bulls look sexy, and the producer would foot the bill. We are not here to point fingers or place blame. Sometimes things just evolve, like the frog in the pot of water, slowly boiling. However, one thing is for sure, if the producer doesn t make any money, there will be no bull stud, no feedlot, and no packer. Unless they are going to import cheap, foreign cattle; but that s another story, and why COOL is important. Hopefully I ve proven the need for cattle producers to be profitable, so this whole system can function properly. How do we make this possible? Who can you trust? Change. It s a 4-letter word in most places, but it is absolutely necessary for our survival. The famous quote, If nothing changes, nothing changes, rings true. There is good change and bad change. Bad change is what got us into this situation. Good change is what will get us out. The phrase that helped us the most was, Is that for real? We ask ourselves this many times when we venture to look through a bull stud (or sale) catalog, and most often the answer is no. Most producers don t have, or can t afford the type of inputs that it takes to make cattle look like they do in the stud books. We don t either. Our cattle look like good, working cattle, and it s all done with littleto-no inputs or supplementation. The difference? Moderate cows with natural fleshing ability that are balanced in all traits. The result: low-maintenance cattle that are profitable and enjoyable. We are committed to helping you, but don t take our word for it, come see for yourself. We don t just want to sell you a bull, we want to help you improve your genetics. Sincerely, BOBBY THOMAN, T & T CATTLE

4 Bull Development Every year our genetics improve as we stack exceptional sires and dams in pedigrees and cull genetics that are marginal. These bulls were born out in big pastures without calving barns or any assistance. Their dams are hardy cows that have never missed a calf. The bulls have been on pasture the majority of their lives with a mineral supplement. About a month before the sale, they will continue on pasture with the addition of some native hay, as necessary. Our bull development remains the same no grain, no concentrates, no silage, and no feed additives. We did pour them this fall, not because they needed it, but for insurance. Our bulls look like bulls should, not like overfed butcher steers. They are fleshy and ready to go to work. The bulls are natural and have not been shaved or had their feet trimmed. They don t need any special treatment, and should adapt quickly to your environment and management system. Sale Information The bulls are listed by calving order; the quality is consistent from the beginning to the end. All the bulls have passed a breeding soundness exam and are guaranteed breeders. We are retaining a 50% semen interest on all bulls. Sight unseen purchases are welcome. We are confident we can match you up with the right bull. All bull are virgin, with the following exceptions: We sampled 634C and D11 on our replacement heifers. C10, C18, C22, C25, C34, D23, & D25 were leased for use on virgin heifers, exclusively. No outside bulls were used in any of these sire groups. All the bulls have been Trich tested. Bull Data We strive to provide as much relevant data on our bulls as possible, without inundating you with meaningless information. That being said, we feel it necessary to provide information on the dams and their weaning efficiency. The weaning efficiency is a ratio of the adjusted weaning weight of the bull to the dam s weight. The dam s weight is adjusted to a BCS of 5, figuring 80 lbs per BCS point. Our goal is 50%+ for weaning efficiency. It would be incorrect to compare weaning efficiencies of twins with the other bulls, but we listed them anyway to show how well some of these cows did raising a twin. Actual birthweight is shown, while weaning and yearling weight are adjusted. We estimate mature frame score based on pedigree and hip height measurement. The majority of our bulls fit in the Medium range. (S): ; (S\M): 3-4; (M): ; (M\L): 4-5; (L): Stayability, heifer pregnancy, and calving ease maternal EPDs can be viewed on the Red Angus Association website. For the Simmental and Angus influenced bulls, these numbers are biased for lack of data, and don t mean much. I believe we put significant pressure on our cows for calving ease, fertility, and longevity. This is one area where I think our management system provides more information than the EPD values, but you can decide that for yourself. Weights and scrotal measurements were taken in November This information will be included in a supplemental sheet, posted on our website. 2

5 Cow Development Our cows are ran similar to our bulls, except they are exclusively raised on pasture their entire lives. We wean our calves later (Nov-Dec) to keep the cows from getting too fat. Yes, you read that right. If we weaned any earlier, our cows would balloon up like pigs. We are constantly finding ways to put pressure on our cows so we can see how they perform. We generally lose a Body Condition Score (BCS) or two through the winter. This has been our best protein supplement, and it doesn t involve any work on our part. These cows will not have been fed any hay up until about a week before the sale. We expect our cows to forage through the winter. If we have to feed hay, it is only as a supplement, and never a full feed. So, you will be seeing these cows in their worst body condition of the year. The cows calve in the spring in large pastures, along with the heifers. They are checked about once per day. Nature takes care of any calving problems. We trust our genetics this much. At calving, the cow is scored for udder quality, disposition, mothering ability, and fleshing ability. Any problems are noted and plans are made for their removal from the herd. In late May, we begin natural heat detecting for Artificial Insemination (AI). As they come into heat, they are sorted from the main heard for AI. We do not separate, or change feed for the AI bunch. They are all ran together. We AI about 25% of our cows most years. After a short, two week AI window, the cows are moved to summer pasture and sorted into bull groups. We take weaning weights in October, as well as cow weight, hip height, and BCS score. We calculate weaning efficiency for every cow. If their efficiency is low, either the cow is to big, the calf to small, or a combination of both. Culling decisions are made accordingly. For comparison, 40% is about industry average, 45% is good, 50%+ is our goal. For replacements, heifer calves must have adequate back fat and scan a ribeye area per 100-weight that is higher than Again, they must forage through the winter, and are rarely fed any hay until late spring. Bad footed and poor doing heifers don t make the cut. Sale Information Pregnancy results for the cows are shown from the fall testing. Cows will be pregnancy checked again just before the sale by Riverton Livestock. Any changes is status will be announced from the auction block. We had a bull break his tool during the middle of breeding season, which left some cows and heifers open. By the time we caught it, the breeding season was almost over. Rather than breed then for later calving, we decided to keep them open. Though no fault of their own, they don t meet our stringent requirement for producing a calf every year. Many of these are our top cows, that otherwise would not be for sale. Our loss, your gain. Cow Data The data for the cows is in the same format as the bulls, except ratios are provided on their calves. We adjusted our wean efficiency calculation 7 years ago to incorporate BCS. Cows with more than 7 calves will only show efficiencies for 7. Likewise, twins are not included in a cow s efficiency score. To get an indication on the mature size of the heifers, dam weights are provided. 3
