4 Purebred Shorthorns have been run continuously for five generations at Dunbeacon. From 1950 to the mid 1980s a range of bulls have been used from many herds such as Tareelaroi, Llandillo, Kelso and Weebollabolla, along with our own bull breeding program. Many bulls were bred and used from three top cows purchased at the Mandalong Dispersal Sale, which has given our herd its strong maternal base and longevity (Mandalong Fara 5th, Sydney Grand Champion Cow, died aged 24 years). Polled bulls have been used since In 1988 the Dunbeacon Poll Shorthorn Stud was established with the introduction of DUNBEACON ANITA T01 our very best commercial cows as base females. With these cows we have used only the very best selection of both Australian and North American sires concentrating on the commercial traits vital to a strong herd. In 1994 Dunbeacon was awarded a Certificate of Excellence in the NSW Section of the Seedstock Producer of the Year Competition for contributions to the Seed Stock Industry. DUNBEACON ZEUS We are dedicated to streamlining our production systems to create a quality saleable product as quickly as possible - steers to the feedlot and steers and heifers off crop and pasture. Another batch of steers were processed at Rockdale in Autumn giving more insight into the genetic merit of their sire and dam. More than 2900 steers have been recorded in this ongoing process. We continue to use large numbers of Dunbeacon-bred bulls to produce a more consistent line of cattle. These bulls include Newman, Leopold, Flagstaff and Zeus. DUNBEACON NEWMAN DUNBEACON LEOPOLD DUNBEACON FLAGSTAFF The cattle on the inside back cover are an example of the type we are striving to keep producing - thickbodied, moderate maturity fertile cattle with that little extra muscling. With cattle prices at record highs, it is time to produce as many kilograms of beef per hectare at the least cost. Dunbeacon s continued focus will still be to produce strong functional females that will survive in the extremes of Australia s climate. As production costs continually increase, our cattle need to be even more low maintenance, easy calving, long living, quiet and be able to raise a high growth rate calf every year. DUNBEACON ANDREA G085 This year we will be celebrating 28 years of continuous sire trials at Beef City and Rockdale Feedlots. This information continues to be imperative in selecting genetics that suits the Australian cattle market. All great herds are based on quality females Page 2 - Dunbeacon 20th Formula One Bull Sale 2016

His females have developed into great matrons with the thickness and do-ability that is demanded of a modern cow herd. Just before Christmas last year we took the opportunity to visit Tasmania and spent time looking at new farming systems for fodder production and grazing management. Producers were in the grip of an extended drought and were implementing many varied strategies to cope. It was very evident that the expansion of the irrigation schemes in recent years has enabled enterprise mixes to change and drought strategies to be implemented. We had a great day visting John and Nancy Bell s Sillwood Shorthorns and sheep property at Carrick, south west of Launceston. We were able to see the type of cattle that suit the environment and the markets that the Bells are supplying to. The cattle were performing well under such harsh conditions with fresh calves at foot. Our Tasmanian Tour Their environment demands medium framed cows with a good constitution, structural soundness and good feet. We were able to see Dunbeacon Balgo G111, the bull that the Bells purchased at our 2013 bull sale, and some of his first progeny, which is always exciting. They purchased Balgo, an Astor son, for his combination of low birth weight, growth, high fat cover and marbling genetics. His dam is now a 12 year old cow that is breeding many excellent progeny. Since our visit, John and Nancy have now had floods and an extended wet winter - receiving 400mm since the middle of April. We wish the Bell family a Goldilocks spring and success in their endeavours for many years to come. Thank you for a great day. Dunbeacon 20th Formula One Bull Sale Page 9

It is a good idea to have some of your own cattle in the yard when your new bull or bulls arrive. A handful of steers or some PTIC cows or even an old bull, just something to keep them company, whilst they survey their new surroundings. At Dunbeacon, we handle our cattle quietly and confidently. We always give our cattle respect, and our cattle respect us. We use a 4-wheel motorbike and a ute around the bulls. The bulls have occasionally been handled with a dog but have not had much exposure to horses. Handle your new bull or bulls quietly and with respect and he will settle into his new home well and will be easy to handle when the need arises. The bulls are in good joining condition at the point of sale, but it is important to ensure good nutrition for the bull during the joining period. You should check the bulls regularly to see how they are working, especially in the early stages of joining when the majority of problems occur. Early intervention can minimize the damage to the bull and to conception rates. When joining is complete, bulls should be drenched and placed on good pasture to get back into first grade health without being allowed to get too over fat or too poor in condition. 27 SHORTHORN BREEDPLAN Understanding EBVs, Accuracy & Selection Indexes An animal s breeding value is its genetic merit, half of which will be passed on to its progeny. While we will never know the exact breeding value, for performance traits it is possible to make good estimates. These estimates are called Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs). In the calculation of EBVs, the performance of individual animals within a contemporary group is directly compared to the average of other animals in that group. A contemporary group consists of animals of the same sex and age class within a herd, run under the same management conditions and treated equally. Indirect comparisons are made between animals reared in different contemporary groups, through the use of pedigree links between the groups. EBVs are expressed in the units of measurement for each particular trait. They are shown as + ive or - ive differences between an individual animal s genetics difference and the genetic base to which the animal is compared. For example, a bull with an EBV of +50 kg for 600-Day Weight is estimated to have genetic merit 50 kg above the breed base of 0 kg. Since the breed base is set to an historical benchmark, the average EBVs of animals in each year drop has changed over time as a result of genetic progress within the breed. The absolute value of any EBV is not critical, but rather the differences in EBVs between animals. Particular animals should be viewed as being above or below breed average for a particular trait. Whilst EBVs provide the best basis for the comparison of the genetic merit of animals reared in different environments and management conditions, they can only be used to compare animals analysed within the same analysis. Consequently, Shorthorn BREEDPLAN EBVs cannot be validly compared with EBVs for any other breed. EBVs are published for a range of traits covering fertility, calving ease, milking ability, growth, and carcase merit. When using EBVs to assist in selection decisions it is important to achieve a balance between the different groups of traits and to place emphasis on those traits that are important to the particular herd, markets and environment. One of the advantages of having a comprehensive range of EBVs is that it is possible to avoid extremes in particular traits and select for animals with balanced overall performance. An animal s breeding value is its genetic merit, half of which will be passed on to its progeny. While we will never know the exact breeding value, for performance traits it is possible to make good estimates. These are called Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs). They are expressed as the difference between an individual animal s genetics and the genetic base to which the animal is compared. EBV EXPLANATION Gestation Length EBV (days) is an estimate of the time from conception to the birth of the calf and is based on AI records. Lower (negative) GL EBVs indicate shorter gestation length and therefore easier calving and increased growth after birth. Birth Weight EBV (kg) is based on the measured birth weight of progeny, adjusted for dam age. The lower the value the lighter the calf at birth and the lower the likelihood of a difficult birth. This is particularly important when selecting sires for use over heifers. 200-Day Growth EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 80 and 300 days of age. Values are adjusted to 200 days and for age of dam. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal s genetic merit for growth to early ages. 400-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 301 and 500 days of age, adjusted to 400 days and for age of dam. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal s genetic merit for yearling weight. 600-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 501 and 900 days of age, adjusted to 600 days and for age of dam. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal s genetic merit for growth beyond yearling age. Mature Cow Weight EBV (kg) is based on the cow weight when the calf is weighed for weaning, adjusted to 5 years of age. This EBV is an estimate of the genetic difference in cow weight at 5 years of age and is an indicator of growth at later ages and potential feed maintenance requirements of the females in the breeding herd. The Mature Cow Weight EBV may also be used by steer breeders wishing to grow animals out to a larger weight. Milk EBV (kg) is an estimate of an animal s milking ability. For sires, this EBV indicates the effect of the daughter s milking ability, inherited from the sire, on the 200 day weights of her calves. For dams, it indicates her own milking ability. Scrotal Size EBV (cm) is calculated from the circumference of the scrotum taken between 300 and 700 days of age and adjusted to 400 days of age. This EBV is an estimate of a animal s genetic merit for scrotal size. There is also a small negative correlation with age of puberty in female progeny and therefore selection for increased scrotal size will result in reduced age at calving of female progeny. Carcase Weight EBV (kg) is based on abattoir carcase records and is an indicator of the genetic differences in carcase weight at the standard age of 650 days. Dunbeacon 20th Formula One Bull Sale Page 25

28 Eye Muscle Area EBV (sq cm) is calculated from measurements from live animal ultrasound scans and from abattoir carcase data, adjusted to a standard 300 kg carcase. This EBV estimates genetic differences in eye muscle area at the 12/13th rib site of a 300 kg dressed carcase. More positive EBVs indicate better muscling on animals. Sires with relatively higher EMA EBVs are expected to produce better muscled and higher percentage yielding progeny at the same carcase weight than will sires with lower EMA EBVs. Rib Fat and Rump Fat EBVs (mm) are calculated from measurements of subcutaneous fat depth at the 12/13 rib site and the P8 rump site (from live animal ultrasound scans and from abattoir carcases) and are adjusted to a standard 300 kg carcase. These EBVs are indicators of the genetic differences in fat distribution on a standard 300 kg carcase. Sires with low, or negative, fat EBVs are expected to produce leaner progeny at any particular carcase weight than will sires with higher EBVs. Retail Beef Yield EBV (%) indicates genetic differences between animals for retail yield percentage in a standard 300 kg carcase. Sires with larger EBVs are expected to produce progeny with higher yielding carcases. Intramuscular Fat EBV (%) is an estimate of the genetic difference in the percentage of intramuscular fat at the 12/13th rib site in a 300 kg carcase. Depending on market targets, larger more positive values are generally more favourable. ACCURACY Accuracy (%) is based on the amount of performance information available on the animal and its close relatives - particularly the number of progeny analysed. Accuracy is also based on the heritability of the trait and the genetic correlations with other recorded traits. Hence accuracy indicates the confidence level of the EBV. The higher the accuracy value the lower the likelihood of change in the animal s EBV as more information is analysed for that animal or its relatives. Even though an EBV with a low accuracy may change in the future, it is still the best estimate of an animal s genetic merit for that trait. As more information becomes available, an EBV is just as likely to increase in value, as it is to decrease. As a rule, animals should be compared on EBVs regardless of accuracy. However, where two animals have similar EBVs the one with higher accuracy could be the safer choice, assuming other factors are equal. SELECTION INDICES Shorthorn selection indices are calculated for two market specifications, namely Heavy Domestic and Export. These Indices relate to typical Shorthorn herds in temperate Australia targeting these specifications. Index values are reported as EBVs, in units of relative earning capacity ($ s) for a given market. They reflect both the shortterm profit generated by a sire through the sale of his progeny, and the longer-term profit generated by his daughters in a self-replacing cow herd. A selection index combines the EBVs with economic information (costs and returns) for specific market and production systems to rank animals based on relative profit values. Note that different types of animals can give similar profit values, so consideration should be given to both the index and the component EBVs when selecting animals for a particular production system. More information is available on selecting animals using a selection index. The Index values are derived using BreedObject technology. More information is available from the BreedObject web site. Domestic Index ($) - Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined in an example commercial herd in a temperate environment (eg Shorthorn, Angus or Hereford cows) targeting pasture grown and finished steers for the domestic trade (eg. supermarket). Steers are marketed at 480 kg live weight (260 kg HSCW and 10 mm P8 fat depth) at 16 months of age. Daughters are retained in the industry for breeding. Export Index ($) - Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example commercial herd in a temperate environment (eg Shorthorn, Angus or Hereford cows) targeting steers for the Japanese B3 market. Steers are assumed to be pasture grown to feedlot entry then feedlot finished for 150 days. Steers are assumed to be marketed to the feedlot at 450 kg live weight, and then slaughtered after finishing at 675 kg live weight (370kg HSCW). Daughters are retained in the industry for breeding. Index ($) - Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined in an example commercial herd in northern Australia (eg Brahman, Droughtmaster or Santa Gertrudis cows) targeting the export trade. Steers are finished on grass and marketed at 600 kg live weight (320 kg HSCW and 10 mm P8fat depth) at 28 months of age. Daughters are retained in the industry for breeding. Note that $Index values for individual animals are sensitive to the assumptions used in the BreedObject analysis to calculate the selection index.
