3 Organizing A Team Is Easy You desperately want to run the RAT Relay, so go ahead and sign up, choose a team name, and then start asking your friends and family to join your team on RunSignUp.com. A Team can be as few as 2 runner and as many as 8 runners. You decide! PLEASE NOTE: Regardless of the number of runners on your team, your Team must be able to average at least a 13-minute mile pace in order to finish the course in the specified time allotted ~ 6:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. If for some reason your team does not make the Exchange cut offs, your Team will be pulled from the course and you (or your teammate(s) will have to make arrangements to have your Team member(s) returned to the Start/Finish Line at Brandi Fenton Park. Registration Great news! You DO NOT have to pay for your entire team up front and then hunt them down for payment. J Each team members signs up on RunSignUp.com by joining your team and pays their entry fee. If you want full control of who joins your team, we highly recommend you add a password to your team that you share with folks you invite to your team. Refund & Transfer Policy All entry fees are non-refundable; however, we understand that life happens, and conflicts arise. Therefore, it is possible to transfer a paid entry to a new team member. This MUST BE DONE ONLINE, and before January 4, Please contact RAT Relay staff at trioyl@me.com to arrange for the transfer. Race Start Time ALL TEAMS will start promptly at 6:00 a.m. It may be slightly dark, so your first runner may want to bring a headlamp or flashlight. 3
4 Prepare For Race Day Once you have your Team, the first order of business is to hold a meeting to exchange contact information ( s, phone numbers, emergency contact numbers, etc.) and to decide who is running which legs. (At this point, it is recommended that you appoint a Team Captain to manage your Team s information and to keep a binder with emergency contact information and Team Schedule.) Things you need to decide AS A TEAM ~ Who s running which leg(s) Will you use one vehicle to transport all runners on the course, or will you require your teammates to manage their own drop off and pick up? What types of food and drink to bring to Exchange Stations? What types of clothing and equipment everyone should bring? (Tucson weather can be very unpredictable; be prepared for hot and cold weather extremes as well as rainy weather.) HAVE AT LEAST ONE RACE BELT TO ATTACH THE BIB NUMBER, WHICH WILL BE HANDED OFF AT EACH EXCHANGE. The bib will have the timing chip on the back side. The race belt with bib number is your team baton. Team Check-In/Packet Pick-Up Packet Pick-Up will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, January 4, 2019, at The Running Shop, 3055 N. Campbell Ave, #153, Tucson, AZ WE STRONGLY URGER YOU TO PICK UP YOUR TEAM S PACKET AT THE RUNNING SHOP. TEAMMATES/FAMILY MEMBERS CAN PICK UP YOUR PACKET FOR YOU. If you cannot make it to The Running Shop, we will conduct packet pick-up at Brandi Fenton Park on race morning from 5:00 a.m. to 5:45 a.m. The Team Captain is responsible for checking in the Team on race morning between 5:00 a.m. and 5:45 a.m. This is when the Captain will receive the Team s bib number. The bib number (with timing chip) MUST BE worn by each 4
5 runner and handed off at the Exchanges. This is how our volunteers will distinguish you from the general public. Runners must SHOW the bib number to the Exchange check-in volunteers in order to receive their Exchange wristband. Rules Of The Loop While this is a RACE, The Loop is an OPEN COURSE. This means there will be other runners, cyclists, walkers, dogs, children, birdwatchers ~ you name it ~ on The Loop. Þ All Users MUST stay to the right and pass on the left. Þ Always look before changing positions on The Loop. Anticipate other Loop users around corners or in blind spots. Þ Never occupy space to the left of the centerline unless passing. Þ No motorized vehicles or devices allowed (ADA accessibility and official vehicles are exempt) Þ No alcohol!!! (This includes at the Start/Finish Line) Þ All users must stay on the designated course and EXIT AT THE DESIGNATED EXCHANGE POINTS. Þ Users should not stop on or block The Loop. Þ Be aware of people with disabilities and be respectful of their needs. All Loop users should yield to people with disabilities. Þ Maintain full awareness of your surroundings. The use of devices such as headphones that restrict your ability to maintain this awareness is strongly discouraged. Þ Carry out all litter, clean up and properly dispose of all waste. Þ Treat all Loop users with respect and courtesy regardless of their sport, speed, or skill level. Þ The Loop is open dawn to dusk, night time use is prohibited. Þ Obey all rules, regulations and guidelines as posted Þ You are participating in The RunAround Tucson Relay at your own risk. While there will be volunteer cyclists leading, sweeping and riding back and forth on the Loop, there will be no additional security personnel on the course. Teams are welcome to run in pairs, should they feel the need. 5
6 The Exchanges Dos and Don ts DO be on time for your runners to hand off the team number belt and bib number. DON T come speeding into the parking lot like a Fast and the Furious driver. DO check in with the Exchange volunteer. NO EXCEPTIONS! BOTH the runner starting and finishing MUST check in with the Exchange volunteers. The runner finishing will hand the number belt to the Exchange volunteer, who will check off that the Team has checked in. The volunteer will then hand the belt to the next runner on the Team and give the finishing runner a wristband. ULTRA RUNNERS (One Runner) ~ You only have to check in at Exchange Four. You are welcome to stop at all the Exchanges, but you MUST CHECK IN at Exchange Four. This is where we will have your drop bag. A spreadsheet will be at each Exchange for the volunteers to check off that Teams have checked in. In the unlikely event that the spreadsheet is missing a checkmark for your Team, the wristbands will act as proof that your runners were, in fact, at each Exchange. If a team cannot show that it received 7 wristbands, it will be marked DNF at the Finish Line. DON T be rude to your volunteers. Any team member (i.e., a runner, driver, support crew) caught using offensive/foul language or an abusive tone with the course volunteers will result in the entire team being disqualified and removed from the event. DO remember to have FUN and congratulate your fellow runners on finishing their leg. PLEASE NOTE: ALCOHOL IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED AT ANYTIME ON THE COURSE, AT EXCHANGES, AND AT THE START/FINISH LINE. 6
