1 2016 Quotes Friday, April 1 Discus Section A Winner Steven Mozia (Unattached) On his performance at Texas Relays: I feel good. I m more of a shot-putter than a distance thrower. I haven t really gotten outside much yet, only two real practices. To come out and throw close to my PR, it s going to be a good year. Women s Javelin Winner Maggie Malone (Texas A&M) On the victory at Texas Relays: I was pretty surprised my only throw held up for the win today. It was nice to get one in since I tweaked my groin before that throw. So I was hoping I could get at least one throw in and move on from there. On your winning throw: I kind of treated my opening throw as my last throw, so let s make it count was my mindset. It was definitely nice to get one throw in and have it stand up for the victory. On dealing with the delays at The Relays: I was very surprised when I saw lightning, I thought that I was going to be able to get my second throw in. Then when we had the weather delay then I wasn t able to take my second throw. Women s Triple Jump Section A Champion, Asa Garcia (Texas) On her mindset coming into the weekend: I had a different mindset coming in. I definitely wanted to do well because I didn t have the best indoor season. And also, we re at home so I have classmates, I ve got family, people who are alumni, people who live in the area, everybody s watching. It was definitely pressure because they expect you to do good when you re at home.

2 On her sprinting correctly in order to jump meters: That s been a problem of mine forever. I run so bad, but my mechanics are getting better so I was very fast at the board and everything just went together. That s all I needed. On what she means by bad mechanics: Well they were bad, they re getting better. I just run with my legs, basically, behind me. My chest is more forward than it should be and my legs are in the back. On how that can affect her jump: It makes you slower for sure, and you re in a terrible position coming off the board. So once you fix that, you re coming off the board in a good position and everything goes just as planned, and you just go further. Men s Javelin Section A Champion, AIoannis Kyriazis (Texas A&M) On if he accomplished his goals for the day: This might be harsh, I m pretty excited, and I m kind of satisfied too. I feel like my throw could have been better. On throwing in this type of weather: I prefer warmer weather but it s fine, I can just put some more clothes on and it ll be fine. On how many times he has participated in the Texas Relays: I threw last year, but I didn t throw very well because I made some technical mistakes. So I didn t throw real well, I threw 69. On getting to number eight collegiately with the personal record he set today: I m pretty excited and satisfied because I ve been working hard with my coach and the rest of the coaches and the trainers the whole year. So yeah, I m just excited. Girls Long Jump Champion, Tara Davis (Agoura) On how this year s Relays were different from last year s for her: This year it s much colder. It was a little rainy this morning, I ran hurdles and I tripped over the hurdle. So I kind of ate it got a little bruised up, came back, did my best here at long jump, which I could have done better but different climate from California. It was a good meet.

3 On if she accomplished her goals for the long jump: There are still little things I m still working on that I didn t really accomplish today. On what she feels she still needs to work on: Trying to land correctly. I m not really landing the way that I should be. On my last jump I did but it was a foul so you can t really count it. But it s a good start. Boys Long Jump Champion, Michael Mitchell (Tesoro) On his performance and if he met all of his goals: I really didn t meet all of my goals. The only goal I met was I wanted my first jump to be a pretty big jump which actually ended up being my farthest jump was So that was the only goal I pretty much met. I was looking for high 24s because I m a mid-24s range right now, but if I come out with the win that s kind of what I came here for so I ll be good. On if he s been to the Texas Relays previously: No, I m actually from California so I m here for Tesoro High School. So this is kind of a voyage out here for me, so I really didn t want to come out here, and fly three hours to lose. I definitely wanted to show people from Texas what California is all about so I feel I did that. On Austin and the overall atmosphere of the Relays: I love it. Honestly we don t really have that many big meets in California. So I loved it, other than the big windy rain delay, because I was supposed to run the 100 [meter] but then all the wind and rain delay kind of messed it up so I just stuck to the long jump which I think was a pretty smart decision. But, other than that, I love it. On the weather he had to jump in today and if it makes a difference to him: Honestly, to me, it doesn t matter. As long as there s a runway and some sand at the end I ll pretty much jump in anything.

4 Men s Sprint Medley Champion, Texas A&M (Hector Hernandez) On his performance and how he felt running: I felt good. It was alright, just a little bit cold. On how it feels to be back at Relays: It feels good. I m from Texas, so this is home. But it s definitely good to get the win today. It feels good. Girls 1600 Sprint Medley Champion, Christina Ollison (McKinney Boyd) On the win tonight at Texas Relays: It was amazing. We don t really run this race so it was really interesting. We work hard for this every day at practice and put our all into this. We didn t really know where we were going to place, but we kind of hoped our hard work would pay off. Boys 1600 Sprint Medley Champion, Evan Chambers (DeSoto) On the win: I feel like it could be better. Overall, it was good. For lane two, we thought the staggering was the best. Women 1600 Sprint Medley Champion, Arkansas (Brooke Ireland) On the performance: This is just incredible. We knew we wanted to come out here and be back-to-back champs. We knew we had to go out there and give it our all and that s what we did. For our team, we had Taylor [Ellis] stay with the 800 girl, and she knew she had to push it. I m pretty sure she PR ed in her 800. We just went out there and did what we had to do. Boys 1600 Meters Champion, Parker Scott (Corpus Christi King) On his win at Texas Relays: It s definitely the biggest accomplishment. Being a senior, it s a little sobering being here under the lights for the last time. I m definitely excited to get here for state, and Texas Relays has treated me well. Women s 400 Meter Hurdles Champion, Ariel Jones (Texas) On her win: It was tough because we ended up running two hours late. I was ready to run at seven, so it messed me up mentally. I just kept warming up and stayed warm and race ready. I had my family out yesterday, I have more of my family out today, and even more of my family out tomorrow. They re just all coming out to see me run, so I think that s a big motivator.

5 Men s 400 Meter Hurdles Invitational Champion, Byron Robinson (Texas) On his performance at Texas Relays: It felt good. I was happy even though the meet almost got pushed back to midnight. It s kind of cold. I liked the performance given the conditions. Women s Distance Medley Champion, Clemson (Kaley Ciluffo) On the win: It s really cool. This is my first time being at this meet. The audience is really cool, and the track felt really fast. The push at the end really helped. I was really in tune. Women s 400 Meter Hurdles Invitational Champion, Ashley Spencer (Nike) On her victory: It was pretty good. I kind of got distracted with all the delays and the weather, but I m not tired and I know I can run faster. I m really looking forward to what outdoor season can bring for hurdles. I m really excited. I ve been working on hurdles for a while now. I know I can run a lot faster and the good thing is my race strategy was perfect. Looking forward, it s going to be fun. I can t wait. Girls High Jump Champion, Saana Barnes (NW Nelson) On her performance: I felt like I could have done better but I m happy with the results. All week, I ve had a pretty bad week so I was kind of worried coming out to see how I was going to do. It feels really good. It gives us a pretty good start coming out here. Boys Pole Vault Section A Champion, Armand Duplantis (Lafayette) On his win: I felt good. Everything felt like it was going well. It s a great place to jump. It s a hard sport. You can t PR everyday, even if things are going as good as you think. Girls 1600 Meter Champion, Madie Boreman (Lean Rouse) On thoughts through the race: We took out and I kind of just sat the whole time. Anna [Elkin] and Rafaella [Gibbons] led it the first couple of laps. Then Rylee [Bowen] took over with a lap to go and I just ran with her. She picked it up a little in the 300 meter mark, but with the last 100 I just kind of made my move. On your performance: I am happy with it. I wanted to go a little faster, but I am happy with a win because I have never won here. I am excited.

6 Girls 300 Hurdles Champion, Brandee Johnson (Nansemomd) On the feeling after the race: Great! The hundred hurdles is not new to me, but I am starting to get a lot more confidence this year. The 300 hurdles and 400 hurdles, I love since I have started hurdling. To come out here in a new environment, with an hour difference from where I am at, it was just great to be able to still perform and get a Personal Record. On thoughts through the race: I was at the starting line and was like ok the wind is not blowing as much as it was in the 100 hurdles, but I am going to play it safe and take off my tights. At first I was going to run in long tights, but I thought that we will just go short today. The first hurdle, I just wanted to attack it but I did not want to go too fast. Each hurdle I wanted to attack and in between I wanted to stay poise, stay tall. I didn t want to break my form, and that was the execution I needed to complete the race and run a 40 point. I did, and I am so excited. Men s 400 Meter Hurdles Champion, Larry Donald (Arkansas) On the feeling after the race: I feel pretty good. They had us just sitting for thirty to forty-five minutes so I didn t want to go out as fast as possible. I just trusted my coaching. On the performance: I just chilled and waited for people to pass me so I could see where I was. Then, I realized that I had a lot of energy left so then I just sped it up. Men s Distance Medley Champions, Alex Riba (Texas A&M) On the performance tonight: At the break at the final exchange where I got the baton, The Texas Tech team had a half step lead on me, but he slowed down intentionally to get behind me. I figured I am not going to burn myself so he can just latch on to me, so I just let the pace go easy. I was just as fresh as he was when it came to the end, which was the goal, to stay fresh and to run it more tactfully. Boys High Jump Champion, Brandon Bowen (NW Nelson) On his performance: Personally, horrible. It was a little under my mark. Just mentally, I wasn t thinking straight. On winning at the Texas Relays: It feels great. This is my first time here so it really boosted my adrenaline up. So it was good.

7 Girls Pole Vault Section A Champion, Rachel Baxter (Canyon (Anaheim)) On her performance: I feel awesome. Last week I didn t do too well, so I was hoping for some big bars today and I got some. But I m super happy. On winning at the Texas Relays: It s such an honor. This is the first time I ve been here so it was so cool having the experience in front of all of those people. Girls Discus Throw Champion, Elena Bruckner (Valley Christian) On her performance: This was my first Texas Relays. It was really windy and I was super nervous competing at my future home track, so I just tried to focus on the little things. I didn t have a coach so I just wrote down a couple cues to remember, and I think I got a 170 so I m just building the consistency. On winning at the Texas Relays: It means a lot, especially it being at Texas and coming here next year. Just being able to come from California and representing the state of California, my school Valley Christian, and just being able to showcase the talents I ve been given from God means a lot. Boys Discus Champion, Adrian Piperi (The Woodlands) On Texas Relays: This is my second year at the Texas Relays. I came in second last year in this event. Winning this year feels pretty nice. It s great. On his performance: Well I wasn t expecting it, that s for sure. I was just trying to PR and it was definitely a PR! I m very proud of myself. Boys Javelin Champion, William Petersson (Frisco Centennial) On his performance: I feel like I could have done a lot better. The cold really got to me today. On winning at the Texas Relays: It feels good to win, but I know I could ve done so much better than I did. I won javelin last year and I actually threw a lot better in that one.
