C l l t A Li Of Calculate A Line Of Central Tendency If Appropriate

Central Tendency Tools The Mean is simply the arithmetic ti average of your values The Median is a number in a series where half the numbers in that series are greater than or equal to it, and half the numbers in that series are less than or equal to it The Mode is the value of X which occurs most frequently in a data set. The Midrange is the number exactly between the highest and lowest values in a data set. A Standard Deviation is the positive square root of the variance in a data set.

ER Arrival To Admit In Minutes Minutes Patient

The RULES are the reason why analysts use The RULES are the reason why analysts use Run/Control charts so extensively and why they are considered so valuable.

Rule #1 SHIFTS When 7 or more consecutive data points appear above or below the Line Of Central Tendency, this is called a shift, and should be scrutinized as important Variation!

Rule #2 TRENDS When 7 or more consecutive data points progress in ascending or descending fashion, each point higher than the previous point in ascending fashion, or each point lower than the previous point in descending fashion, this is a trend, and should be scrutinized as important Variation!

Rule #3 PATTERNS When 7 or more sets or subsets of data points repeat themselves, alternating above and below the Line of Central Tendency, this is called a pattern, and should be scrutinized as important Variation

CONTROL CHARTS 30 Rule #4 - OUTSIDE LIMITS When a single point falls outside upper or lower control limit on a control limited chart (based on Standard Deviations), look for important Causation surrounding that point UCL LCT 5 LCL SDV

CONTROL CHARTS Rule #5 - ONE SIGMA If at least 4 out of 5 consecutive points fall on the same side of the line of central tendency AND are more than one standard deviation from the line of central tendency, important Variation is indicated STDV LCT 8 6-1STDV

Control Charts have a general form UCL Variable LCT LCL

There are a lot of different types of Control Charts. Each one is designed to give you a different perspective on the data you are looking at.

p Chart

X-R Chart (X bar R)

Other Control Chart Types ~ X-R Called a Median Range Chart Uses the median instead of the subgroup mean for the LCT. Includes a Range Graph over time along with the Variables graph. X-S X bar S Control Chart - Uses standard deviation instead of range display in X bar R Chart

Detail/Individual Performance Paretos are getting a lot of attention lately! So what is a pareto?

A Pareto Chart is simply a Combination Bar/Line Graph, which h utilizes two Y axes. Related Measurements are then ranked in decreasing order of occurrence. This decreasing order of occurrence is reflected on a second Y axis as a percentage of the overall total ::::::::::::::from:::::::::::::::: Say 0% what!!!??? to 100% of the total

Maybe You ve Seen One! % % 80% 70% 60% 32 50% % 30% 20% 10% 0 After Midnight After Dinner Before Bkfst Between B&L Between LD 0%

The basic configuration of a Pareto tells you!!!!! Where to place your emphasis Where you will get the most bang for your buck

This special tool is attributed to -Vilfredo Pareto- Was an Italian economist studying Eastern European Poverty in the early 1900 s.

Vilfredo s Startling (???) The quality tools attributed to Observations Vilfredo, i.e. the Pareto Effect, Regarding the Pareto Principle and Pareto The Distribution Diagrams, Of Wealth In all stemmed from... Early 20th Century Europe!!!

His thesis Pareto s Principle, then, is a simple The restatement overall wealth of in his Europe discovery. at the That time... is concentrated t in the hands In the Universe there of only is a an few, unequal while poverty distribution pervasive of things. over the masses.

Joseph M. Juran (A Quality Analyst of the 1940 s) (Not to be confused with Duran Duran) Was a contemporary of Deming As a Quality Analyst he Was working on Quality Loss Distributions o Realized that there might be a connection to Pareto s work o Saw the light & Resurrected Pareto s Work on Poverty

In the blinding light of epiphany he connected Pareto s Principle to Process Improvement

The 80/20 rule was born! BINGO GO!

80% of the money in Europe is controlled by 20% of the population (Pareto s Thesis) Then, it could make sense that... 80% of identified problems relate to only 20% of problem sources!

His Principle demonstrates the fact that 80% of problems usually stem from only 20% of the causes!
