12 PASO KNEE The PASO Knee features an innovative autoadaptive pneumatic swing phase control which requires no valve adjustments. The knee will automatically respond to any change in cadence up to 7km/hr with no adjustments required from the prosthetist. The PASO Knee is suitable for a wide range of users due to its stability and responsiveness. Unique closing geometry creates an inherently more stable system during stance than a standard 4-bar design. It ensures optimal stance phase stability from loading response through terminal stance until weight is applied on the toe in conjunction with a hip flexion moment to release the knee. 13 PASO KNEE POWERFUL & PRECISE ADAPTATION The PASO Knee offers powerful, but precise movements for a range of activities. The joint adapts instantly to changing speeds (up to 7 km/h) to provide the user with freedom of movement and safety at the same time. The intelligent construction of the pneumatic system eliminates the need for time consuming adjustment of flexion and extension resistance during the dynamic trial fitting session. The PASO Knee s damping profile adapts to the user s walking speed. This is achieved by opening or closing the appropriate air ducts inside the pneumatic system. High flexion of the knee joint (up to 150 ) is possible, which is particularly advantageous when, for instance, kneeling, sitting, or getting into the car. HOW THE PNEUMATIC SYSTEM WORKS Airflow behaviour in the pneumatic system at 2 km/h: lower resistance due to the open side air duct. Airflow behaviour in the pneumatic system at 7 km/h: higher resistance due to the closed side air duct. Dampening knee flexion limits excessive heel rise, and assists in promoting knee extension. AUTOADAPTIVE FUNCTION OF THE PNEUMATIC SYSTEM The diagram shows clearly that the PASO Knee pneumatic unit adapts to varying requirements depending on the respective walking speed (up to 7 km/h). This way the knee joint always provides the damping that the user needs. This promotes a physiological, safe and efficient gait. Pressure SPEED Slow Medium Fast Piston stroke travel The pressure in the pneumatic system varies with the piston stroke travel depending on the walking speed. 23 CLOSING GEOMETRY SUPERIOR STABILITY Closing geometry provides a higher level of stability in stance than a standard 4-bar design by maintaining a stable and extended knee until toe load is applied in conjunction with a hip flexion moment. The level of safety created by the closing geometry is comparable to the geometric locking system of the Total Knee range. ICR Center of rotation / ICR INITIAL CONTACT AND LOADING RESPONSE The instantaneous center of rotation is in front and below the ground reaction force. The knee is fully extended and inherently stable even if the user creates a hip flexion moment. MIDSTANCE The front and rear bars move into parallel position. The instantaneous center of rotation moves proximal and posterior. The ground reaction force remains anterior to the knee and maintains stability until toe load and a hip flexion moment is initiated. PRE-SWING With toe load and hip flexion moment initiated, the ground reaction force moves posterior to the instantaneous center of rotation and the knee flexes and enters swing phase. For more active individuals or those with greater levels of voluntary control, stability can be adjusted to make the knee feel more lively and easier to release by using adjustment wedges.
